We've called Albany its home for close to 100 years! We know this town, its people and its homes. We are unique -an older community with specific needs when it comes to heating and cooling. We appreciate the tradition and history of Albany’s older homes. But just because our residences come from the era of the model T, doesn’t mean they have to run like one.
Over time, we have become the experts in making sure an older home is running at peak efficiency when it comes to energy consumption. In order to properly diagnose your home’s needs, Farrell Brothers needs to look at its infrastructure, its duct work and air flow, insulation, windows and doors. All these things come into play when heating and cooling an older home. The biggest and best piece of equipment doesn’t always serve an Albany residence in the same way it would a brand new home.

Purchased $200 of plumbing services for $99 via Angie's List. Made appointment to have diswasher installed. Asked the rep if the service would be covered under the Agnie's list purchase. Told "absoliutely." When tech showed up I was told that I would be charged another $250 because the price of appliance install was $450; the $200 purchased through would apply against that. I called the office to complain; was told by owner that I was a liar and trying to cheat HIM. Right. Would never, ever recommend this outfit.

I am not sure where the confusion was but there is no way that a customer service rep can tell anyone on the phone exactly how much a dishwasher installation would be but as far as applying the coupon that you purchased towards the installation that is absolutely acceptable. As far as me calling you a liar and trying to cheat me - that did not happen - you must have me confused with someone else. Thank you for your business . Randy Rowe President Farrell Brothers Inc.

Representative arrived around estimated time, installed faucet timely. Faucet working fine. Paperwork on payment due not accurate but corrected by call to office. Comment: Since Angies List has requested a review and since the only option to complete this review is to answer yes or no to whether or not I would use them again, rather than having the option to say 'maybe - if the price was acceptable I would; but if their price were more than what I paid with the Angies List discount...which I understand from the technician who installed the new faucet, it would be...than I would not.' I think this part of the review form is flawed. $300 to install a new faucet seems over priced to me.

Had bought a Angie's list coupon a while back and then had a few small jobs around the house. The guy that came was a bit of a talker and it took him more than 3 and 1/2 hours to complete 3 small jobs. He washed out the screen filter in my kitchen sprayer attachment (which took 5 minutes), replaced a leaking valve in my basement, and finished putting a new faucet in our bathroom (just the drain section - my husband had already hooked up the hot/cold faucets). He asked if I had a coupon and then charged me accordingly. I felt like he just made up the difference so it didn't seem like having the coupon saved me any money at all. After he left, I realized that the bathroom drain was leaking into my cabinet. Called the company and asked for another plumber to come fix it. They responded immediately. The second guy was quite nice and fixed it quickly and without incident.

The system was tied into the existing baseboard and domestic hot water plumbing system of the house and the three attached apartments, where are all heated by the same boiler. We were going to pay $16,000 or more this year for fuel oil alone, that's how expensive oil has gotten. Plus it leaked heat like crazy, was polluting and horribly inefficient: we're hoping to save at least $3000-4000 per year with the new, unbelievably compact propane burner that hangs on the wall (the fuel burner took up a whole room and was noisy as heck! Randy came out and estimated the job, helped us get partial financing through a private lender, and his crew showed up and started to work and 10 days later we had our new heating system installed. Norm did all the plumbing work, creating a new network of copper piping to tie into the existing system, and he did a beautiful job. Randy even had Norm and Tom dig the hole for the 1,000 propane tank buried in the yard for us, and they redistributed the dirt in some previously flooded areas. We're very happy with the new system, and Farrell Brothers even sent us an email saying if we had any problems with anything during the hurricane that just went through the Northeast, to call them and they'd be there. They'll also service the new unit every year, and I have the sense any time I have a question or problem, they'll do their best to help us out. I think this is a top notch professional company, thank you for the great job guys!
Description of Work: Farrell Brothers dismantled, removed and replaced our ancient fuel oil boiler and replaced it with a modern propane boiler and hot water storage tank.

The plumber was very polite and informative and nice. He appeared able and competent and completed his repairs in a timely fashion. So far repairs have been fine and without problems. The whole repair was completed with travel time to get parts within less than 3 hours. However, I thought the cost was not a good value for the work completed and the hours worked. I feel that I could have gotten the same work accomplished for half the Farrell cost or less by using another service provider. Farrell uses a book to determine how much to charge per job, no matter how long the job takes. In the future, I would try to get such work provided at a set hourly rate rather than by a plumber that uses a book rate. In the past I have found book rate to not be competitive and this recent work confirms that opinion. I only tried Farrel because Angie recommended them and gave an introductory deal of $99 for 2 hours of licensed plumbing. I would recommend Farrell, or at least the young plumber who serviced me, to those who can afford to pay more than they need to pay for good service. If cost does not matter, I can recommend Farrell based upon my one experience in using Farrell.
Description of Work: Installed a new kitchen faucet that had been purchased from Home Depot. Plumbing for cold water supply needed new shut off value which was also replaced. Needed to leave to pickup new shut off value. Repaired with kit one bathroom faucet, which plumber needed to leave to pickup. Inspected one shower faucet to see if it could be adjusted and checked shower drain and noted seepage. Repairs not done to either shower concern.

The plumber walked around the outside and inside of my house where I pointed out the problems. He gave me the answers as he understood the problems. The shape of the bathroom sink faucets hold water between the valve and the aerator. When the water level drains through the aerator it will drip until the level drops to the valve; then it stops. He told me they were lifetime guaranteed by their manufacturer Kohler; if the do fail at any time I should contact Kohler for replacement. The mildew stain is from water condensation on the interior of the toilets collecting at the contact surface of the floor tiles/grout. If the toilet wax sealer was loose or cracket, the pressure of the water flushing out of the toilet would flood the floor. It is a room temperature/humidity problem not plumbing. There is a pressure release screw on the inside control valve which should be opened to release and drain any outside pipe water. He showed me how to arrange the outside faucet open with the inside valve closed to prevent residual outside pipe water from freezing. He told me the replacement cost for both outside screw valve faucets to lever valve faucets and said that if they were not leaking to leave them alone.
Description of Work: Requested plumbing service information requiring house call service charge for plumber of $99 to answer the following questions. Is the dripping from bathroom sink faucets normal? Is the mildew stain on the tile grout around the toilet normal? How do I prevent the outside faucet water pipe from cracking when frozen? Can you replace the outside screw valve faucets with lever valve faucets?

I walked downstairs one day after a shower to find my kitchen counter and floor covered with water. A leak had come through the ceiling from my bathtub in the bathroom above. When I talked to the office, they advised that someone be there between 10-2. To my surprise, Pete was there at 9 am, took a look at the problem, advised what the issue was and what he would have to do to repair it. Unfortunately, I live in an old house and there wasn't easy access to what needed to be repaired from upstairs, so he did tell me that a relatively large section of my kitchen ceiling would have to be taken down to access the pipes and do the repair. An estimate of $800 was given. I called the office later that day to arrange to have the work completed. When Pete came back a few days later, he was right on time and thankfully, only had to end up cutting a 6 inch hole in the ceiling to get access to what he needed. He explained everything to me, showed me the old pieces he was replacing and the new pieces he was installing. He cleaned up everything once he was done and the cost was what was estimated. I appreciated the quick response I received from the office in setting up the initial visit as well as the follow up visit to complete the work. Pete also let me know that he was able to cut a smaller access hole than originally anticipated which I was very appreciative of. I would definitely call Farrell Brothers for work in the future.
Description of Work: There was a leak in my upstairs bathtub that was leaking through the floor and down through the ceiling of my kitchen below it. The waste and overflow on the tub was rotted. A hole had to be cut in the ceiling of the kitchen to get to the drum trap and pipes. The trap was removed and a new waste and overflow were installed with new pvc trap and a section of piping.

I wish we had had Peter install the unit to begin with. It is very difficult to reach areas which require changing of rings and filters. We were able to have the unit serviced and be confident in the job done. We will probably continue to have Farrell Brothers service this unit and may even go with them for servicing the heating and cooling system. Knowledgeable and professional!
Description of Work: We have a Pelican water filter and treatment system which was installed just over a year ago. We recently tried to change the filter, but couldn't add chlorine to the holding tank. After much confusion (and cursing) we decided to call a plumber. I called Farrell Brothers based on Angie's List reviews and our own past experiences. When Peter arrived and looked at the unit and the replacement part he immediately knew what was going on. He also suggested that he should review the entire installation to verify that it was correct. He reviewed and told us that it was basically correct and working except for the part to be replaced. I put him on the phone with company so that he could verify the path and confirmed that he would install the replacement. Which he did.

Sorry you didn't feel the value was there but sometimes in older homes it is difficult to access drain lines because the original plumber did not put cleanouts where they are needed. I did notice that we removed roots from your main drain line so it was probably a wise decision to have the line checked because it you let roots go for too long it will cause the main sewer line to clog and eventually compromise the pipe so I would recommend having the line maintained on a regular basis. Thank you for your business - Randy

Quick to respond. Easy to set up an appointment. The sink was unplugged though I thought this $99 deal for $200 worth of service was a good deal. The service itself was not worth $200. I don't think I got a good deal out of the offer from Angie's list. The plumber just snaked the pipes which shouldn't cost $200. Overall satisfied since the problem was fixed.
