We've called Albany its home for close to 100 years! We know this town, its people and its homes. We are unique -an older community with specific needs when it comes to heating and cooling. We appreciate the tradition and history of Albany’s older homes. But just because our residences come from the era of the model T, doesn’t mean they have to run like one.
Over time, we have become the experts in making sure an older home is running at peak efficiency when it comes to energy consumption. In order to properly diagnose your home’s needs, Farrell Brothers needs to look at its infrastructure, its duct work and air flow, insulation, windows and doors. All these things come into play when heating and cooling an older home. The biggest and best piece of equipment doesn’t always serve an Albany residence in the same way it would a brand new home.

While working on the toilet, he noticed that the handle was broken and in need of replacement. He bought the part, returned and replaced it. Some other companies would have made me schedule a further visit.

Plumber first attempted to clear the plugged disposal from the sink itself. Because the drain was clogged with lobster shells, it was necessary to snake it from the basement. He persevered and eventually was able to clear the clog.

.Serviice provider called to set up appointment, arrived on time, and presented himself well. He then removed one toilet and snaked to the cellar. No apparent cause of the weak flush was found. He then offered to install new low-flow toilets in the house for $199 each, where I would purchase the toilets and Farrell would install them. He then departed. Problem was not solved.

I had made an appointment for Farrell Bros. to come to our house on Monday 12/24/12 for a routine service call due to a large part of the heat run in our house not heating. Most likely a circulating pump had gone. We woke up on Sunday 12/23/12 to a cold house so we placed a emergency call to the call center. About 10 minutes later we received a phone call from Jake Carp who was the on call for Farrell bros that day. He was at our house about 30 minutes later. He looked at the furnace, a mid 1990s model that was in the house when we bought it, and let us know everything that would need to be fixed. Once he got into the furnace there were a few other things that needed to be fixed also and he let us know about his before fixing it. Even though this was an emergency service call and there was a $150 charge tacked onto the service call it was overall a good experience. Jake was really clear on everything and we would recommend Farrell Bros to anyone who needs HVAC service or installation done. He did not try to sell us a new furnace and let us know that we can probably get about 10 more years out of the one we currently have.
Description of Work: Replaced several parts of our furnace including part of the heat exchange and a circulating pump. This was a emergency house call on a Sunday.

,I was very pleased in the professionalism of the workers. They had great knowledge of their tasks.
Description of Work: The workers had to find an access area to get to the hot water heater. However, because of its inaccessibility, a hole was cut into the garage/living room wall in the wrong place. A decision was made to cut another hole in the living room/kitchen wall. A carpenter was called to assist in this project. he did a very fine job of patching, sanding and framing the wall. The workers went into great detail in explanation as to what they were doing and why. They cleaned up all their messes, afterward. The workers were very pleasant and knowledgeable in their duties.

My water heater, which I had gotten installed by Home Depot 6 years ago started leaking and stopped working. Although it was under an extended warranty Home Depot refused to live up to the guarantee. I needed a water heater so I checked Angie's List and saw that Farrel had a special offer of a new 40 gallon gas water heater and chimney vent pipe for $799 plus installation. I called to get more details and ended up buying the deal. They were able to schedule it for early the next day. I got a new 40 gallon natural gas American brand water heater, a new larger vent pipe installed, and removal of all the old stuff for a total of $999.00. The young man who did the installation was on time and very polite and did his job in a professional manner. I was pleased with the whole process and think the price was reasonable for the equipment received although I have not been able to find any documentation anywhere that backs up the claim that I was getting a $1500 package for half price. I think what I got was about what I paid for but the ease of the whole process made it worth doing it.

I thought Farrell Brothers Inc was high priced. The review of the system and the tank flush was good, they did it quickly. But then I asked him to do a small thing. He did a good job but that little extra thing I asked him to do was expensive. We had water leak in one of the toilets and he said he had to replace the flap. A flap cost like $14, but the whole thing cost me $114. He was on it about 15 minutes. I know plumbers rates and it shouldn't have cost that. The price for the home review was good, the deal for the coupon was good. Any other work was expensive.

We had A few estimates on an oil to gas conversion and we chose Farrell Bros. because their price on A Triangle Tube boiler (furnace) was reasonable and they have a good reputation. Plus, there are quite a few steps to the process and you need to feel comfortable with who you are working with. There was a leak in a weld that showed up after the job was complete and it was repaired without hesitation. I liked them a lot and do not hesitate to recommend their services.
Description of Work: We converted our oil furnace to gas. We had to first get a gas line, put in a new gas boiler, and lastly remove the old furnace and oil tank. The project started in February to get National Grid on board and plan for the gas lined to be installed. Randy at Farrell Bros. was easy to work with either by email or phone. It is so important that the communication is good because there is a good deal of coordinating with National Grid. The job was done in stages and it went smoothly.

The tech was punctual and professional. All components were checked as expected and issues were explained. Required parts were in the truck and necessary repairs performed immediately. I have used Farrell Brothers for many years. They have replaced both the gas furnace (CO leak) and the central air conditioning system both over twenty five years old. My experience with this company has always been exceptional.

This job went very well - according to schedule, price estimate and quality expected. First, the folks I spoke with from Farrell Brothers were very courteous and helpful. When I called to get a quote, the receptionist was very polite and when I asked a couple of questions she was unsure of, she did not hesitate to put me on the phone with the owner, Randy, who answered all my questions patiently. Secondly, they were able to get me on the schedule for the next day which I appreciated very much - my hot water heater was only days away from bottoming out. Third, Peter, the service technician that handled this work, showed up when scheduled, performed the work in the time estimated, and did an excellent job. He took added steps to make sure the old hot water heater did not leak on my carpet and the dolly wheels did not leave tracks on the carpet. Peter did an outstanding job installing the new hot water heater and performing the maintenance on my boiler. Peter took the time to explain the condition of my boiler, what work he performed on the boiler and let me know a few things that I should be aware of moving forward with my boiler that is now 27 years old (as was my hot water heater that was replaced). Even when my old hot water heater's drain valve broke off when he was trying to drain it, Peter did not complain. Because of his professionalism, I was more than happy to grab my shop vac and help him out. Peter, thank you for your polite and professional service!

I called Farell because I used them before for water heater issues. I find them to be responsive and professional. I was able to get an appointment quickly, the technician came out at the arranged time, he determined why we weren't getting heat in certain rooms, gave me an estimate and did the work of part replacement on the furnace and bled each radiator in the house to ensure that heat worked well in every room. He then snaked the tub drain of our tenant and her tub has been working fine. They did a great job and I will use them again in the future.

They gave me a window of 4 hours and the plumber came right at the beginning of the time which was very nice. He tackled the few different jobs I had and got them done nicely. The last project came up (recaulking a spare tub) and he said it wouldn't be feasible for him to do it (take too long) and we could do it ourselves. I thought since I bought a three hour work certificate that he would at least start it but I guess he didn't think that was a good idea.
Description of Work: Had a few things done. The plumber they sent (he has been over since) was very nice and professional. He worked on everything I needed done efficiently.

My tub was slow to drain. The plumber claimed to have fixed it by removing some hair from the drain, but the problem isn't much better (I took his word for it that it was fixed and didn't discover until later that the drain still drains slowly). $99 service charge to not fix this problem. In another bathroom, there was a loud banging noise after the toilet flushed and finished refilling. He told me the problem was maybe related to one of two things (refill valve or one of the drainage pipes (?)), and it would cost $149 PER ITEM to fix - but that he could give me a "deal" of $99 for the second item. I opted for the $149 charge to replace the refill valve (which is a part that should cost about $15 or so), since it was the more likely of the two things to fix the issue (it did). A few months ago I had purchased an Angie's List special of $200 of plumbing (parts and labor) for $99, which was set to expire a couple days ago, so figured I'd try to get these fairly minor things fixed, which, I assumed, would be well under the $200 coupon value. Little did I realize at the time that I'd end up paying another $50 out of pocket for the service. I got the impression that the plumber was just trying to drive up the costs for what was relatively minor work. I did speak with the owner today, who explained how they charge, which is NOT based on actual part and labor costs like the majority of contractors do. You have to pay $99 regardless of what work is done, then another $149 minimum to actually do any work. So my gripes are primarily that the prices are very inflated and that there's little transparency about the charges. I plan to use only my local (one-man shop) plumber from now on - he charges for parts and labor, not $99 per service call PLUS $149 per repair once here, like Farrell Bros. does.
Description of Work: Fix slow-draining tub and toilet with loud refill noise.

Thank you for your review and I am sorry that you don't feel that you got enough plumbing service for your money but keep in mind you did not spend $250.00 as you posted you spent $150.00 for 2 plumbing repairs which I think is quite reasonable. As far as the service charge of $99.00 I forgot to mention to you yesterday if the work that is being performed is more than $400.00 then that charge is waived just to clarify for my other Angie List customers - it did not pertain to your service so I did not feel it was necassary to mention on the phone. As far as transparency that is the reason that we have flat rate pricing so the customer knows what they are going to be charged before the work begins. The problem with hiring contractors that work on a time and materials basis is the slower they work the more money they charge and that is why we stopped doing that about 10 years ago and 99% of my customers are happier with flat rate pricing. Hopefully this explanation helps and enjoy the holidays. Randy Rowe President

I had decided on a specific toilet at a local home improvement store. However, I was unable to transport it home and install it. A Farrell Brothers plumber picked it up at the store, brought it to my house, and installed it. He took the old toilet away. It went well and I decided to have them do the same with the toilet in my upstairs bathroom. That went well, too. If I had shopped around and gotten quotes, I might have been able to get a lower price. However, the quality of the work performed was good. The amount I paid was for the labor. I paid the home improvement store for the toilet.

Thank you for your business and I am sorry that you were not happy with the pricing that we provided for the valve replacement but that is why we always quote pricing up front so there are no surprises at the end. Replacing tub or shower valves is a little more involved than most people realize and that is why it is more expensive than replacing kitchen sink or lav faucets. I am glad that we were able to repair 2 outside faucets for you so you could use the $99.00 coupon that you had purchased which did save you some money !! Happy Holiday's Randy

Overall, I would use them again. They were professional and responsive.
Description of Work: I had a clogged bathtub drain, a leaking kitchen sink pipe and a toilet that was not flushing right. They went out of their way to fit me in as soon as possible and get me the earliest appointment. The gentleman was friendly and professional. I didn't realize how much it cost to have someone put a snake down your tub drain and pull up a bunch of hair. I assume the prices are comparable to other companies. The kitchen sink pipe leak only required a tightening of the connector, something I can do in the future and will save me about $80. The toilet was not flushing right and would not stop running. It needed a new flapper suction per the plumber. Since the fit wasn't just right it caused the tank to keep running. He replaced it but I had to call him back because this did not solve the problem. He came back and replaced it with a different flapper. It is better but still appears to trickle a bit. I had a coupon which helped with the cost.
