BENJAMIN FRANKLIN PLUMBING

Plumbing, Heating and Air Conditioning, Water Heaters,

About us

We've called Albany its home for close to 100 years! We know this town, its people and its homes. We are unique -an older community with specific needs when it comes to heating and cooling. We appreciate the tradition and history of Albany’s older homes. But just because our residences come from the era of the model T, doesn’t mean they have to run like one. Over time, we have become the experts in making sure an older home is running at peak efficiency when it comes to energy consumption. In order to properly diagnose your home’s needs, Farrell Brothers needs to look at its infrastructure, its duct work and air flow, insulation, windows and doors. All these things come into play when heating and cooling an older home. The biggest and best piece of equipment doesn’t always serve an Albany residence in the same way it would a brand new home.

Nice, detailed guy came out for the quote, explained what needed to be done, made some recommendations, discussed quality of materials. He gave me a spot on price quote and when I called to schedule were able to be flexible in when they would come. The gentleman who did the work was a nice guy, used his phone a lot during it for what sounded like a personal call and caused the appt to run long, which is why I gave a B rating there, but was a nice guy and I can certainly understand personal stuff coming up. Job was thorough, fairly priced, and I would certainly use them again.

No work. Purchased the service call and payed for it. I never received any contact. I can't judge the work or fairly comment on the company but as a business owner I can judge the lack of follow up! I can comment on the fact that deal listing was extended. I wonder what that means to others who purchase. The downside of your "deal" system is once the bill is payed in advance the purchaser is at the discretion of the vendor. " Angie' where is your follow up past a sale to make sure that the payed for contact is started or completed. Think that through! I speak from years of customer service and the first step is acknowledgement to the customer and then a negotiating a timeline of service delivery. No scheduling excuse for no follow up. I still haven’t received a call l and managed to find a vendor on Thumbtack who came in and performed the service. Angie, you owe me the payment for service not rendered. Alex Brown

I agree that you should be refunded which I am sure Angies List will do if you contact them. I have no control of refunding your money it is all done through Angies List but I do see that you purchased a service call and the notes in my data base say that we left a message on 6/[Member Information Removed]/17 but have not received a return call so I am not sure what happened here but I am glad that you got your problem taken care of and in the future you can give us a call directly and we will schedule a visit on the phone or shoot us an email - whichever is more convenient ! I would also like to recommend to all members that we try to contact any members that purchase one of our deals immediately but sometimes we do not receive complete information or sometimes its not accurate contact information so if you do not hear from us right away please feel free to reach out to our main number at 518-462-5454 or email me directly at [Email Removed] and I will respond within 24 hours . Thank you [Member Name Removed] for your review and pointing out the flaws in the system and hopefully they will get corrected and please contact Angies List for your refund I will let them know that we did not perform a service call for you and you are entitled to a refund. They refused to come out due to the age of our water heater (7 years old). Someone else was happy to come over so I won't bother with Farrell Bros. again
Description of Work: Called them to come replace a part on our water heater.

I have no record of this customer in my database so I am not sure what they are referring to but I do know that we do not just send out technicians to change parts that the homeowner tells us needs to be changed first we would come out and diagnose the problem and our trained technician would determine what part or parts needs to be replaced and provide pricing to do so . I am just guessing but I can only assume that something like that may have happened ! Thank you for reading my reply - Randy

There was a zone heater that went bad and they pointed to it. They said which one was wrong. I know that plumbing is expensive; it is $50 to just walk in the door. But I thought they should have offered a plan to do more - to change it out. They said it was easy to change out a zone heater. That's one thing that they pointed to and it's still giving me problems. I changed it out myself because they said I could. They could give more detailed offerings after the inspection.
Description of Work: They just did an inspection. They inspected a boiler that had a pipe leaking.

I am not sure what else we could have done - I am sure that we offered to perform the services for this homeowner and he must have declined ? I am sure that some companies would have tried to sell him a new system and not given him the advise that he could change the zone valve himself but hopefully everything works out in the end!! Thank you for your business and the review! Randy

From the initial contact to review of the job, to price to contracting and completion of the job, Farrell was among the best, most courteous and professional plumbing profession I have ever dealt with. The job was review, a price was established and a start date was agreed to. As promised, the plumber called before arrival, completed the job with the utmost respect to my house and property, completed within the time frame promised, and required paperwork was completed. There contact info will remain by our phone should we need additional work. Look no further, Farrell permits clear evaluation of your problem and effective work to complete the job. Thank you guys.

In the house that I live in, I had a dumpster toilet. I came around the corner and went in the bathroom and I had water all over the floor of the bathroom. I'm not a plumber but I assumed it was the wax ring leaked or had broke. The first guy they sent was clearly a junior. He didn't know what he was doing, mis-assessed the situation. He spent over 2 hours trying to get the toilet back on. Once he did, he went down to actually test where the connection was in the basement. He realized it was leaking down there so he had miss-assessed it initially. They still ended up charging me for all that work. That work came to $320 and it still didn't work when they were done. They then came back and charged me again, another $588. They sent out someone who knew what they were doing at that point. I couldn't get anybody to call me back. The first guy when he left said the main office would call me to set up a follow up appointment. I went a day or 2 days, never heard back from them so I called them and they said Oh we don't know what you're talking about. I said ok. The woman in the front office is very nice there but overall the company I have issues with. I actually called and complained to them, I had to call them multiple times. I kept getting excuses as to why no one was calling me back. Finally, he sent me a $100 check and a gift card. I thought to myself why and how would I ever use a gift card for your services again. So thanks for nothing. I had asked for a refund of the original visit, they refused to give it to me. Instead they gave me a $100 rebate because they charge $99 just to show up for a special situation. They refunded me that. I explained to them the first $320 worth of work that was done was completely useless and worthless.

It was a late Saturday afternoon. While at first they were not able to locate an oncall plumber that was available, they did get a hold of someone and called me back. We were grateful for their timely response and professionalism. Thank you for helping us out in our "emergency."

Instead of checking 2nd floor for source of leak plumber advised us to "open up the 1st fllor ceiling in order to see source...advised that to save money we should cut ceiling open and he would come back to inspect. One week later he returned ...went to second floor and advised that source of leak was water spilling out of tub and seeping under the floor. There was no need to "open up 1st floor ceiling". Still charged for his "service". Guess he was just lazy on the first visit...well paid for creating a problem not repairing one.

I have no record of this customers name or address in my database so I am not sure how to respond or to explain what really happened! With that being said in defense of whoever was at this customers house I am not sure why you would need a plumber to tell you that water is spilling out of the tub on to the floor causing the leak sounds like that would be obvious to anyone using the tub?

Plumber was punctual and pleasant to work with. However he spent two hours diagnosing the problem and attempting to fix the problem, but ultimately left with the problem unchanged and me with a $320 bill ($99 service call and 2 hours of labor). I would have been fine with this if the problem had been fixed. I am left with the same problem and don't know what to do.

I looked at the paperwork and the notes say that we believe the problem is the first floor kitchen faucet which we will replace for you at a discounted price if you want to have that done. Unfortunately having a 100 years experience does not allow us to see inside walls or inside pipes and sometimes it is a process of elimination to resolve a problem of this nature.

I'm really happy with the work - they did a great job! I highly recommend them, and I will continue to use them for my plumbing needs.
Description of Work: I had Farrell Brothers out for two different items over the course of a couple of days. First service was to look at our sump pump. It was running but wasn't pumping water out. The technician was quick to identify the problem and was able to fix it within 30 minutes. While he was there I asked him for a quote on replacing our hot water heaters. The home we live in was a 2 family at one point and converted to a single family. The water heaters were still set up as a 2 family where 1 water heater serviced one side, and two water heaters serviced the other. Since all three water heaters were about 8 years old I decided to replace them. The technician scoped out the work and I decided to remove all three and replace them with 1 larger hot water heater. The quote was reasonable so I scheduled the work - fortunately they had time available the next day. The next day three techs showed up ontime and removed all three water heaters, repiped what needed to be to link to 1 hot water heater and installed the 50 gallon water heater. It took them about 6 hours total (which was a little less time than they estimated).

Office staff is very friendly, tech was very good. My only complaint is the cost - the tech spent less than an hour total installing both the faucet and the disposal, and the charge was $698.76. They charge $99 service call (would have been $150 on the weekend), $299 to install the faucet, $249 to install the disposal, and then tax. I won't use them again.

I called on March 30 to schedule the appointment and got a callback the same day. The service was scheduled for April 5. I was told I would be the first appointment of the day and that the technician would call me when he was on his way. He called in the morning and said he would be there in 30 min, which he was. He was pleasant and did a fine job of servicing the furnace. I will call Farrell Brothers again the next time my furnace needs to cleaned.

First and foremost, I am very satisfied with the quality of work. The fix was properly done. Unfortunately, that's where my good experience ends. I had a leaking pipe above my hvac ducts. An employee came to my house and was there for an hour and 15 minutes. He assessed the situation and said it was impossible to tell where the leak was coming from until he removed the hvac duct. He said the job could take anywhere from 3-8 hours depending on how much of the duct work had to be removed. I asked for an estimate on the worst case scenario (an all day job) and he said that if it took all day, the job would cost 1000 dollars. He said he would come at 830 the next day to start working. My wife took the day off to be home while the work is done. The next day comes and he shows up at 9:45. Being that late was not a great start. After an hour of work, he asks my wife if she wants coffee and leaves the house. Presumably he went to get a part for the job, but he should have gotten coffee on his time. He was gone for nearly an hour. He comes back and finishes the job. It's now 12:40. My wife texts me he's done and goes to work. I get home and the leak is gone, and the hvac ducts are back where they should be. As I said, I am very happy with the work done. Then 3 weeks go by and I get my invoice. They billed me 45 dollars for the part and 950 dollars in labor (9.5 hours at 100 bucks an hour). I'm confused. Between the two days, he was at my house for 3 hours and 15 minutes and getting coffee and parts the other hour. There has to be a mistake. I call the company to ask about this. The person I spoke to became rude in about 30 seconds. He wanted to add the time up with me. He starts on day one and says his employee was dispatched to my hourse at 1:45 and was off the clock at 4:30. I told him that the guy left my house at 3:15. I didn't understand why I was expected to pay for his remaining hour and 15 minutes. That's when the guy on the phone started yelling at me. He told me that any other company would have charged me $2000 for the same job and I should be happy to only pay $1000. He then asked me what I thought a fair price would be. I told him that I was more than happy to pay for the hours he was actually working, which by my calculations was about 4.5 hours (I even included the time he went to get coffee. I don't know that he got a part. I would like to think a plumber would come to a leaking pipe job with a copper supply pipe. But who knows). He started yelling more and said he wouldn't bicker with me over hours. He literally said, "so you want to pay 500 dollars? Is that what you want? Is that really what you want?" I thought that was fair so I agreed (even though I know he was being sarcastic. I felt like he was trying to bully me into paying the full 1000 dollars) I ended up paying 540 dollars. 4.5 hours of labor at 100 dollars an hour, 45 for the part, and tax.. My entire phone conversation lasted 4 minutes. (I checked the call log before writing this so I could put the exact number). It literally took me 4 minutes to lower my bill by 500 dollars. They knew they were over billing me. If they thought for one second that the bill was correct, the call would have lasted a h*** of a lot longer than four minutes. But, despite being wrong, he was rude and yelled at me anyway. This is the second bad review I've ever written (the first was a restaurant on Yelp), but feel it is warranted. It's a shame too because the work was done well. However, because they had the stones to write an invoice that showed 9.5 hours of work when only 4.5 was done, yelled at me when I asked them to explain the bill, conceded that I was right within 4 minutes, and billed me for coffee runs, I will not be using this company again under any circumstances.
