Well, I have not been pleased with them at all. Delay, delay, delay. The guy explained, we are so busy and I have 2 vacations planned and you know. I called them Monday and said, you know what, forget it. He is the owner and he doesn't have anyone else to do the plans which doesn't make sense to me but okay. He had this long vacation scheduled for a week and he didn't get back to me to tell me he was going to be delayed another week. Then he called me like 2 weeks ago and said, well, I'm going to start on your project now. Well, start, I mean he's been out here I don't know, like 3 weeks before. Then he put together what he termed a bubble diagram and I don't know what that term means in landscape jargon but it was just a simple drawing of what it would look like. It took him a week to do that and then he was gone the next day for another week. I said, you know, forget that. I told him forget it, I'm not even interested in their proposal.
Description of Work: There was a company called Legends Landscaping that had some kind of a star with your company, so that was one of the companies to get a quote. I hadn't selected them to do the job just a quote.

Dear [removed member name], We’re sorry that we weren’t able to meet your needs on this project. Mike met with you initially and the two of you discussed how you planned to retire in this home and wanted to have a really special back yard to enjoy throughout your retirement. You discussed your budget and many of the ideas you had about things you’d like to be able to incorporate in the landscape project. The two of you began a discussion about which of these many things might work, and some that wouldn’t work as well and still stay within budget. Mike was very interested in your project and told you he’d like to personally design the space for you so it would be the “show case” you desired. He understood from you that this was a sizeable project and specifically customized to you which would take a little bit of time to design/develop, especially because you had so many things you wanted and were having a hard time choosing what all to include. He let you know right away that he had two family “destination” weddings that had been planned for more than a year that would take him out of town for two different weeks. Before he left for the first week that he was to be away, he had asked you to try to narrow down some of the ideas and styles you had for the project – to look online to see the styles and colors you specifically wanted to incorporate. On his return, you provided about 15 sheets of information and photos, and discussed those with Mike when you met with him again. You also added several more things that you’d like to have and discussed them with him at that time. Mike put together a conceptual drawing since you were still in the early stages of the design process. His conceptual drawing was something similar to a room plan that had the house and yard drawn to scale, with general ‘boxes” to identify areas for some of the features you’d requested. It was conceptual, and this type of drawing is often used to begin the process in a complex design such as yours. Mike had scheduled a meeting with you upon his return from the 2nd week away to firm up more of the design and specific features that you wanted, but unfortunately, you called to cancel saying you had gone with another company that could get to your project more quickly. We know that Mike would have created an exception outdoor environment for you, and he was looking forward to doing just that. We understand that you were excited to get the landscaping underway and that you didn’t want to wait because of Mike’s family demands on his time. Had you let him know that you didn’t like the idea of him being away for two weeks, he would have gladly assigned another designer to the project right away. Needless to say, we're upset to find out about your disappointment with a negative review rather than a phone call letting us know that you felt your project was being delayed and allowing us the opportunity to make it right for you. We hope you have a wonderful experience with the company you’ve chosen and that they give you a place you’ll love to spend time.

We called them in April to look at our irrigation system in our back yard. We recently purchased 4 Aspen Pines and we wanted to make sure they were being properly watered. We scheduled the service call and a tech came to the house. I cannot remember his name, he was young, very nice and seemed to know what he was doing. Maybe Zach? Anyway....he said he would put together what needed to be done, and have his manager look at it and provide an estimate. We called back approximately 5 times in the next 10 days, left messages with the tech and the manager, and no one returned our call. Then, we get a bill for $141.95 for the service call. I finally paid the bill. But DO NOT recommend this company at all.

Response from Legends Landscaping
Dear [member name removed], You initially contacted our office on 4/15/14 regarding your irrigation system. You had concerns about recently planted Aspen trees getting sufficient water from your drip irrigation. You indicated that the person who extended your dripline had crossed some wires and the zones were “messed up” – and there were issues with the pressure of both the lawn and the drip irrigation. At the time of your call, I discussed our hourly billing rates with you and you authorized us to send the irrigation tech out to your home to make the necessary inspection and repairs. It was discussed that this type of irrigation repair is done on a time and materials basis, rather than a specific bid, because we cannot know what type of issues we’ll run into until we start uncovering the lines – it may be a simple repair, it may be an extensive repair depending on the cause of the problem. Our Tech met with your husband on 4/18/14. The inspection of the system took some time because the system had been poorly installed and it was difficult to identify which valves controlled which zones. The drip line that was located in the area of the Aspen trees had no water pressure – so no water was coming out of the line even when the zone was fired. The line had to be followed back some distance to a point that it actually had water – which meant unburying it quite some ways. Once the line was identified, several things were discovered: There were missing emitters/plugs – these were replaced as they can cause pressure shortages in the line. The primary issue though, was that the line was way too long and the pressure was insufficient to move water to the tree line and beyond. The tech discussed with your husband, the best option of installing a new valve which he didn’t have an exact price but would probably be in the range of about $300. The final price would depend on how much longer the drip line was (because he hadn’t yet followed the line beyond the trees) and what might be necessary to discover that and then create a new zone. Your husband indicated that he didn’t want to spend that kind of money, so the Tech said he would check to see if there were other options. Our Tech called your husband a short while later and told him there were three options: Install a new valve. Tap into the lawn line and adapt it to add in drip to the area – this would entail coming under a walkway which may run into some expense depending on how difficult it was to install a sleeve under the cement. Extend the existing long drip line all the way back to the start of the line, completing the circle. This option may or may not create enough additional pressure to resolve the issue. It would also involve tracking the line to the end and then extending it to reconnect to the beginning of the line. The Tech received a call from you on his cell phone a day or two later and you discussed these options and ball-park estimates of costs. At that time you asked the Tech to do the work on the side. The Tech said he wasn’t able to do that and suggested you contact the office if you wanted to schedule further work. You did call the Tech’s cell phone again on two occasions and he did not return your calls because he was so uncomfortable with your request to circumvent the company. The bill for the time spent on your property was sent out to you the beginning of May and clearly indicated “PLEASE CONTACT THE LEGENDS OFFICE IF YOU’D LIKE TO UPDATE YOUR SYSTEM”. No call came into our office after your initial call in April. A statement was sent out to you at the end of May which you returned with payment and a statement that “the charges were a joke.” I personally called you on 6/20/14 and left a message to please call to discuss the issues you had with the billing – no return call was received. We do have to apologize for the fact that the Tech didn’t let the office know that you continued to call his cell phone. Had he done so, I would have contacted you to schedule additional work or to discuss your questions and concerns. We did drop the ball in that respect, and again we do apologize. However we do commend our Tech for not accepting work outside of the business, which is against company policy, and directing you to contact the office as you had done in the beginning. We feel your F grade is very unfair considering the circumstances. We make every effort to work with our customers and give them the very best information with regard to repairs and possible costs. We also make every effort to provide the absolute best customer service possible. We would greatly appreciate your re-assessment of the grade you’ve given. Thank you!

I had previous work done by Quality Curb so when I decided to have work done in the yard I decided to work with the same company, since he owns both. I asked Mike for different ideas for the back yard, to replace the dead grass with bark or rubber mulch for my granddaughter, he gave some ideas, wrote some things down and left. I thought he was going to get back to me on the estimates. I had asked for several estimates instead of one big job so I could pay off one then move on to another one. I didn't hear back for a week so I called the company on April 29th, 2014 and was told that she would see if he had the estimates on him and they would email me what he had. Today is May 3rd and I've yet to hear anything from the Company. I don't understand why they haven't given me any estimates. Mike was very nice when he came out, and he was on time but I don't feel he was very professional in not getting back to me. If he had no interest in doing any work in my yard, why didn't he just say so. Updated 5/9/14 I got a phone call from Legends with estimates for front and back yard, it was explained that due to this time of year and being busy that sometimes it takes a few weeks for them to provide estimates. They will be emailing the estimates to me next week.

Thank you for your review. At our initial consultation we let our clients know that it generally takes about 7-10 business days to put together a proposal. Additionally, the materials you discussed were no longer available locally and took a considerable amount of research only to find that what you specifically requested was extremely expensive and an alternate was proposed to you within about 12 days of our meeting. We want to thank you for the opportunity to provide a proposal for you. As per your last email, you and your granddaughter are enjoying the weather and you're in no hurry to get the work done. We will be here when you're ready. Until then, enjoy your granddaughter - she's only young for awhile!

Description of Work: 1. Dug a drain from a low spot in driveway approximately 70' to exit at low spot on other side of front lawn with good drainage. Installed perforated pipe to drain low spots in yard as well. 2. Removed planted garden in front of house to expand usable space for patio. Added approximately 165 sq. ft. of new pavers, installed starburst design in center and worked to wall edges. Work was started the day after contact with a crew if 5 at 12 noon, with all materials delivered, and finished completely by 10AM on Thursday. Low voltage lighting reutilized to front of house and installed, additional electrical outlet installed under center paver in patio. Excellent work, crew was super and congenial. Lawn dug up for drain that was installed and grass replaced the first day. The artwork with the pavers was excellent!

Appointment was scheduled for Monday morning between 8:30-10:30 so I took the morning off. At 10:45 no one had showed so I called to reschedule. I received a call from the tech around 11 said he would be there by noon. I said no, I have to go to work and we need to reschedule for Wednesday when my wife is home. Wednesday came , no show, finally showed on Thursday. The tech messed with the valves a bit then told my wife that 2 valves were stuck and he would get parts and return Friday. No show, no call on Friday, nothing over the weekend, showed up on Monday. When he was done, he didn't tell my wife anything, never tried to operate the system from the timer, just left me a voice mail saying it was repaired. I got home turned on the system, and the second valve stuck. My gardener looked at what had been done and said he normally doesn't work on irrigation but would do it for me since the lawn was in need of water. He replaced all 5 valves in about 3 hours. I just received my invoice from Legends and could not believe they are trying to charge me $338.42 of which 6 hours is labor at $277. Trying to bill me for a tech and a crewman like they were digging trenches or something when in reality the only digging done was with a hand shovel and maybe enough dirt to fill a 5 gallon bucket. Update 4/30/14 On 4/24 I contacted Legends to dispute the bill. The lady in the office said she would have a supervisor call me to explain. I have yet to hear from a supervisor. I also confirmed with my gardener that Legends did not replace the valves, only the parts in 2 valves, which didn't require any digging at all, just removing 4 screws from the top of the valve. I would also like to add that I was never quoted a price or given an estimate before any work was done. Update 5/13/2014 Mike the owner of Legends called to hear my side of the story. He was very understanding and willing to work with me. I believe there was some misunderstanding as far as a scheduled time and a lack of communication when the work was completed that kept me from being a satisfied customer. Mike made it right and I changed my grades based upon his professionalism and response.

Thank you, we appreciate the change in your review. Your initial call came in at the peak of the irrigation start up season and we did receive an especially large volume of calls for repairs this year. We tried very hard to cater to our client's schedules by trying to give a small window of time for appointments. This time it worked to a disadvantage for both of us, and unfortunately discovered that it made matters. worse. We weren't able to predict the extent of the repairs that needed to be done at each appointment until we were on site. Some repairs went quickly, some were more involved and took more time than allotted. The delays caused missed appointments and unhappy clients. It was a very valuable lesson for us and we've changed some procedures because of it. Our goal has always been to provide the very best customer service possible. Thank you for your honest review.

We bought a home with a beautiful view of Reno but a non-existent one of our yard for the simple reason that there was no yard. Debris, lava rocks (yes, lava), a large backyard slope full of large uncontained rocks and dirt, weeds, and dead shrubs. We needed someone with the aesthetic vision to design to client's taste/likes and who also had a professional crew to tackle a hard excavation/install. We spoke to several contractors, (one leading contractor didn't want to tackle the backyard and gave us a ridiculously high bid), but there was clearly one who fitted our needs: Legends Landscaping. Mike Schumacher, owner, came out and spent a long time telling us what the project entailed, and after listening to us, gave examples of how he envisioned the landscape. He was also forthright in telling us what he could do for $x. He did not low ball and add on $ during the project. We knew right away he was the one for us. Mike is a great guy. Personable, professional, and patient. I did not know specific plants, etc. being from the east coast, but I knew the look I wanted and he worked with me. The crew, led by Shane, worked non-stop. Very few breaks, no chatter. I was very impressed at the amount of work that was done in a day, and the quality of the work. The excavation took 2 weeks including restacking of stone walls and creating river beds, irrigation system one week, topsoil/sod and planting two weeks. Everything done with thoroughness and diligence. Respectful crew. Shane responded quickly to questions and helped us understand the process. Jose kept his crew working. We now have a beautiful front and back yard and have plenty of rooms with a view. A gorgeous lawn, rock garden, flower beds, trees, evergreens, and flowering shrubs. We could not be happier. The neighbors love it as well and have complimented us on it. When I see the result and realize the quality of the work and difficulty of the overall project, I think the bid, relative to the outcome, was very fair. Legends did an excellent job for us and I would definitely use them again.
Description of Work: Entire yard makeover including a steeply sloped back yard. Complete removal/excavation of existing shrubs, weeds, rocks for landscaping project. New irrigation system installed including Rainbird material, pop-up heads, drip lines, ADS pipe. Landscape: Creation of riverbeds, clean-up and re-stacking of existing rock walls, installing a rock stairway from front to back yard on a steep slope. Landscape design included topsoil installed, raked, & rolled for installation of 3,400 square feet of grass mix sod in front & back yards and extensive planting of trees, shrubs, and plants.

When I originally contacted Legends, I made it clear that I expected the company to handle the submission, for approval, to the Sierra Canyon architectural review committee (ARC). I was told that Legends would do so. (If I had been told anything else, I would have moved on to a different company.) As we refined the design and it became time to make the submission, the person we worked with showed little enthusiasm for preparing the necessary proposal for review. What he sent us (by mail, no less) to submit to the ARC was completely unsatisfactory. Except for the plant list (which was required to develop a quote), it appeared to be about three minutes work, dashed off carelessly. Among the many defects were: - There is no way to tell if the plant list meets the requirements of the ARC, because plants are not clearly marked as either deciduous or evergreen. - The plant list seems to imply that vines are included, which are strictly prohibited in the design guidelines. - The design shows a tree right in front of the dining room window, blocking the view. When we objected to that, the representative told us to "...ignore the locations on the sketch." If the locations on the sketch are to be ignored, what exactly is its purpose? - Although we asked several times if the design met the Sierra Canyon Design Guidelines, we never could get a straight answer, and there is no way to tell by looking at the submission. For example, there is supposed to be thirty-five shrubs. The plant list seems to imply that there are only twenty-seven (and some of the twenty-seven are called "grasses"). - The measured square footage of the patio was off by almost 100%. I'm not a landscaper, so I am not in a position to judge the design. It appeared to be adequate. The price seemed to be in line with other landscape companies.

Response from Legends Landscaping
[removed member name], your very negative review has taken us totally by surprise. Throughout the past four months we were working with you, you had been quite happy with the ideas that had been proposed, the designs that had been done, and had actually requested a specific project start date. You first contacted Legends in October of 2013, via email from your home in Hawaii, and you have been in contact with our designer since that time, even through our “off season” when he was not in the office regularly, but came in specifically to work on your project. He met with you and your wife in mid-November when you were in town - your Reno home was just in the framing stage of construction - and he discussed your landscape ideas and made some additional suggestions for the back yard, front and side yards. He voiced concerns about your requests for synthetic turf and stucco structures being approved by the home owners association. A sketch for the backyard and changes to the front and side yard was emailed to you in early December, and your reply in mid January was quite cordial indicating that you really liked all of the ideas and scheduled another onsite meeting just prior to your close of escrow. You also said that you had been in contact with the HOA and that they would probably reject the synthetic turf area. You met with our designer onsite when the home was completed, discussed the sketch and requested some changes. The following day, you emailed some specific plant requests and also asked for a sample of the synthetic turf to be sent to your Hawaii address. Our designer also picked up 2 copies of the HOA submittal, filled them out providing a revised sketch, spec sheets, color photos and all requested information, and mailed them to you in Hawaii for your signature along with the sample of the synthetic turf. About a week later in early February, you emailed a request for some specific wording changes to the HOA submittal regarding the synthetic turf, and some additional changes to the design. Our designer revised the submittal, completed a third sketch and sent these changes to you via email. Also in that email, you requested a project start date the 3rd week in May when you and your wife would be back in town. We were happy to accommodate that timing, and requested that you sign the proposal and submit it with your deposit so that we could put the project into the schedule and secure that specific timing for you as more projects were being added to our work queue. The following week, you emailed a request for yet another sketch and proposal indicating that we would not block any windows, and that all plants would meet the HOA requirements. The response from our designer indicated that the sketch was conceptual only and was for the purpose of passing the HOA review guidelines, and to show the homeowner our ideas to be sure we are on track with your goals – all of which was discussed with you at your very first meeting. Plant placement can and will be adjusted to provide the most esthetically pleasing affect for the design and the homeowner – and any requests from the HOA once they have reviewed the design. Our designer also indicated that on the off chance the HOA should request a larger drawing; it would be completed upon your acceptance our proposal. Legends has installed many landscapes in the Somersett/Del Webb communities and we are very aware of the restrictions and have only had two designs rejected out more than 60 designs submitted. These designs were rejected because they included specific homeowner requests (such as shed or backyard structure, synthetic turf, and fewer plants, all of which are either prohibited or required by the HOA) that would not have normally been part of our design. Our expertise in design and in working with the HOA is a part of what makes Legends a quality company to work with – and all of these things were discussed with you during the more than four months you were working with our designer. During these four months, numerous emails were answered, two personal on site meetings were held, three different sketches were completed, three separate proposals were provided, a full HOA submittal package with specs and photos was completed and revised per your request, and a synthetic turf sample was sent, all without a signed commitment from you. Our designer was enthusiastic about your project, and spent a considerable amount of time working with you as evidenced by all of the items noted above. It’s always a little more difficult when you live out of town, but as with all of our clients, we made every effort to respond quickly to your requests and accommodate your schedule. Even without your signed contract, we provided everything that was required for the HOA submittal except your signature, which was not in our power to do. Had you signed and submitted the packet, any HOA objections would have been dealt with easily and efficiently. The submittal packet was indeed mailed to you along with the turf sample – unfortunately a way to send the turf sample via email hasn’t yet been invented so US mail was the only alternative. Customer service is a very high priority with us, and our designer made an exceptional effort to provide everything necessary for a successful project with you. We’re certain that, had you committed to the project at any time during the four months he worked with you, you would have been thoroughly pleased with all phases of the project, its outcome, and the exceptional service we provide. Again, we’re very surprised by your negative review, and with your sudden decision not to see the project through with Legends. We hope the landscape company you’ve chosen to take over the project offers a successful and pleasing outcome for you.

I gave them a B rating because of some slow response times and lack of follow through. I believe the slow response time was due to their success and being slammed with work. When I originally spoke with the estimator, we agreed that we would go over the exact type of plants to use. This did not happen and I hope I will like what was planted. Hard to tell since the work was completed in November. We'll see how it looks in spring. I also had to remind them of the Angie's list coupon but once I did, they were very accommodating. I think the price is a tad high therefore the B in that category. The work involved clean up of overgrown landscaping and installing new plants, redoing lighting and drip system.

It's So Nice Not To Have To Bird-dog a Contractor I have not often seen a crew who work together like these guys. When a truck showed up, the drivers went right to work with the digging crew. No effort went unused. The work proceeded exactly according to the drawings. My only interaction with the crew was saying, hello and showing one of the workmen a drawing I had shown Bart. It was a Japanese guide to placing garden stones. He said, We do a lot of Japanese style. The end result is perfect. The cleanup was excellent. Some neighbors commented on how clean it was. They admitted they were worried when they saw the dump truck and Bobcat and dirt and trees and rocks all over the street. The street was left clean. All in all... Good Show! Well recommended

It was a great experience working with the Legends Landscaping team. Their estimate was actually very competitive and I chose them because they do a lot of paver installs so they had the focus I needed. Communication was a bit delayed at times but they did follow-through and deliver on the date that they gave me. The pavers look great, install was very fast (1-2 days). We will use them for our backyard project in 2014

Response from Legends Landscaping
Dear (removed member name), I'm sorry that I didn't see this review sooner. I'm not certain to whom you spoke, but we definitely do estimates for landscape design and installation. The only time we wouldn't do an estimate might be for an general irrigation repair - the reason being that when repairing an existing irrigation system, we don't know what we might run into underground. We always explain our rates for such a service, however, and our irrigation techs are very knowledgeable and efficient. Your review doesn't indicate the reason for your contact, but I'm sorry if you feel we didn't provide you with proper information. We do take customer service very seriously.

After searching for several months for a contractor to do the work, Legends Landscaping responded quickly for an initial estimate. The owner, Mike, was pleasant and professional in every regard. While the price was high, it was not out of line with the few contractors that had provided partial estimates previously. It was nearly three months before our job came up in the schedule, but once the work commenced, the foreman, Shane, and his crew were prompt and worked ceaselessly each day of the job which took over a week. We were kept informed of the intended progress. Sub-contractors for electrical and plumbing caused some delay but we were kept informed about that as well. The end result was exactly as we hoped. The new trees are perfect for their spaces and the lawn is progressing well. I'd use this company again and recommend them highly to anyone who has a complex project.
Description of Work: Legends Landscaping designed and built an outdoor kitchen/BBQ island, removed an old inadequate BBQ island, removed and replaced troublesome trees and patched bare places in the lawn.

I chose Legends for my landscaping based on the positive Angies List reviews. I was not disappointed, Legends did a wonderful job. The work was expected to take three days and they finished in two. The yard turned out beautifully, excatly what I wanted. The crew was professional and worked hard without complaint. Final payment was not due until after a later walk through to make sure the plants and lawn were thriving.

My Lawn "rebuild plan" included water saving technologies which are sometimes used in large-scale Commercial Development, such as Athletic Fields. But these features are almost never used in this location for residential lawns. My Key features are: * Homeowner-installed irrigation pipe and (traditional) pop-up system. * At depth of 4" from grass surface, Underground Watering (Using Rainbird XFS Drip tubing). * Homeowner-installed drip tube layout (adjusting for known "wet" and "dry spots" from the previous pop-up system). * Underground Soil Moisture Sensor prevents watering unless truly needed. * Water-Sense (tm) Certified grass, which grows roots up to 10" deep. I spoke and met with with several area Lawn Contractors. Most were unfamiliar with modern underground watering technologies. Most were also unwilling to work a multi-week project schedule: First excavate. Then, wait for homeowner to install PVC pop-up pipe system. Then, bring in soil and fill to 4" below surface grade. Then, wait for homeowner to install underground lawn drip tubing system. Then, bring in additional soil to bring grade up to surface grade (minus thickness of sod). Then fertilize, roll, install sod, water, and re-roll. Of those few that bid, Legends had the largest and most professional operation. Not the cheapest bid, but the work and customer care was outstanding. If you need only a low-tech "makeover", then you can consider many other Lawn Installation Services as well. But for my complicated project, this is the Contractor which looked best, and their performance was outstanding. It seems likely, to me, that their pricing is very competitive for "simple lawn makeover" work, and lawn + patio and/or concrete work as well. But my job was not typical, and I don't know exactly how their pricing would compare on such "typical" contracts. I am thrilled by the work of Legends Landscaping. HIGHEST recommendation.
Description of Work: Excavation and topsoil installation (approx 40 tons each). Soil installation in two layers. Sod acquisition and installation. In addition, resolved manifold leak in homeowner-performed irrigation work.

I decided to accept another proposal. I want to take the time to encourage others to consider Legend's Landscaping for their landscaping needs. Even though I did not follow through in accepting their bid for services, I saw enough where I wanted to give them as much of a positive review as possible on Angie's List!

We recently moved to North Valleys, Antelope Valley to be exact. We have 9.5 acres all tiered. We wanted to have a dog friendly, easy maintance, and to add some color to our new home. I called 3 landscaping companies. One never called back. Another I am still waiting on a drawing/estimate. Legends was AWESOME! They listened to my wish list and brought up things to help make our yard manageable and DOG friendly. It has been 3 months and is still beautiful and easy to care for. We had a couple plants that did not make it in the transition and a little errosion damage due to the crazy weather we just had. Legends is coming out next week to replace plants and fix the small errosion problem. Great communication, awesome work crews (who show up on time and work), great after service care and help you maintain your investment! HIGHLY Recommended!
