Michael & Son’s is proud to offer professional jewelry appraisal services. Whether it’s the vintage pocket watch that was your grandfathers, or the stunning new diamond engagement ring you’ve just slipped on your finger, we have the experience and technology to correctly identify, document and place a value on your watches and fine jewelry.
Our fully equipped in-house gemological laboratory offers state of the art equipment designed to quickly and accurately evaluate your diamonds and gemstones. Of course, technology isn’t everything! Our Gemologist Appraiser has over a decade of experience in the jewelry industry and is an Alumni of GIA (Gemological Institute of America), and is Reno’s only JBAR (Jewelers Board of Appraisal Review) Appraiser.
For a complete list of qualifications, memberships and certifications, please feel free to call or visit the store. In addition to a staff Gemologist, we also have experts on staff to assist with specialty items like Native American jewelry & artifacts, sterling silver flatware, watches, American & Foreign coins & currency, and rough (uncut) gemstones.
Every appraisal includes a color photograph(s) and all diamonds over ½ carat include a stone plot (a map of your diamond’s unique clarity characteristics). We strive to supply as much detailed information as possible in our appraisals and our research tells us that we provide the most comprehensive and detailed reports available in northern Nevada. We also offer up-front flat rate pricing, as well as discounted hourly rates for five or more items.
These are the main types of appraisals & reports we offer:
Insurance Replacement: This is the most common type of appraisal and is used to document the unique characteristics of your jewelry and establish a current replacement value of the item so that it may be insured properly. Many insurance companies require a written appraisal.
Estate Liquidation: This type of appraisal is used to document the specifics of items included in a decedents estate and establish an approximate liquidation value.
Fair Market Value: This type of appraisal may be useful to those who have an article of jewelry they wish to sell. It documents the specifics of an item and establishes an approximate resale value so that the seller can have a realistic idea of what price to expect when selling an item to a private party. It also provides prospective buyers with an unbiased evaluation of your item.
Gemstone Identification: This report identifies and authenticates a gemstone or rough (uncut) gem and provides information as to the type of gem, quality, carat weight and other specifics.
Are you just curious about an item you have? Please feel free to stop in, we offer free 15 minute consultations and it’s always our pleasure to speak with you. We will be happy to objectively advise you if an appraisal is beneficial. Surprisingly, we advise against paying for an appraisal with more than half the items we examine.
