Curt Hemphill

Description of Work: I have worked with Mr. Hemphill for YEARS! I have read the other report here on Angies List and am extremely SHOCKED and SPEECHLESS!! Not only is he extremely professional but he is very fair on his price to the point where Mr. Hemphill would rather make his customers happy than even get paid a lot of the time. I refer him to anyone and everyone I know who needs a contractor and they ALL feel he is amazing at what he does. I will be letting EVERYONE know to get on Angies List to make thier reports as well as everyone will see how amazing this man is!

Description of Work: Mr. Hemphill represents himself as an expert in all things construction - including plumbing, framing, wiring, sheetrock, roofing, finish work and general carpentry. He is capable of good work, but he will trick you into trusting him until you assume he's honest and then you'll end up paying to correct his horrific and sometimes hidden work. When he agreed to help us with a fixer upper house, he gave us a bid on plumbing, framing, wiring, demo, all new windows, all new roof, basement framing and sheetrock, plaster and sheetrock repair and finish trim work. We agreed to his verbal bid. By mistake and mislaid trust, we paid him more than half of his bid before he ever began work. He didn't show up on the job as promised and ARBITRARILY hired "subs" to do the work for him. These subs began 2 months after our first payment to Curt - and he began weekly demands of more and more money to "cover his payroll". These demands became increasingly threatening and verbally abusive. In early June we realized the project was nowhere near complete, but we had already paid more than the original bid. We confronted Curt about this and he became very very angry and verbally abusive, calling me a "f****** liar" when I told him what monies he'd already received. When I provided him with the check numbers and copies, he began throwing large and heavy tools in my direction. None hit me but I was very afraid that if I stayed in his range I would suffer physical harm. I then went to the City to investigate the status of the building permit Curt had said was in place - and found none was ever issued. We terminated our arrangement with him shortly thereafter. Unfortunately, we trusted him too long. None of the projects he began met current building codes. The plumbing all had to be ripped out and started from scratch. The windows arrived in the wrong sizes and styles which Curt blamed on the vendor. We went to the vendor and found that Curt had measured and ordered all the windows - including 5 extras. It turned out that these "extras" were because Curt's measurements were wrong. The interesting part is that he realized his "mistake" BEFORE the windows had been shipped! Once the windows arrived, they were still the wrong sizes. To add insult to injury, Curt then stole 3 of the "extras" and refused to return them, leaving me to assume that this was no mistake. He must have measured windows at another job and added them to our order - then absconding with them when they arrived. In the end, our window investment will be almost double what we had budgeted for. Another project he did which had to be torn down & started again was a bay window addition. The framing was so undersized and inadequate that our new contractor said he'd never seen anything so bad. The framing materials Curt used, and then hid, were used, damaged & warped 2 x 4s. The list goes on and on and on. It seems every day we find another thing Curt screwed up that we have to do again, buy again, order again, and pay double for. DO NOT allow Mr. Curt Hemphill or his crew into your home. They are unsavory, unprofessional and dangerous. Mr. Curt Hemphill may well be involved in questionable or illegal outside activities which require the large sums of cash he demands. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
