Recently I was in need of finding a leather furniture repair company. My puppy had chewed off 2 corners of a custom made leather sectional from Bassett Furniture purchased in 2006. After searching on the internet, I found a company called MK Furniture Repair that came up in the 2nd place of the search. I called and spoke to the owner, Bobby, that assured me he had over 40 years of experience repairing leather furniture in Las Vegas and Los Angeles. I asked him to come out to give me a bid for the repair. He came to my home a few days later and after seeing the damage was very sure that he could repair it. I had 3 leather swatches attached to the sectional which I cut out and removed for his use to match the leather. He told me he would be probably getting the leather matched from his contact in Newport Beach CA., but either way it would cost $650.00 to do the job. Since the sectional was over $8,000 and I had purchased it for long term use, I told him to go ahead with the expensive repair. The following week, on August 11th, he showed up with a helper to take the sectional. He asked for a $250 deposit payable to Montgomery and not MK Custom Furniture. I thought this was suspicious, but I gave him the check. He and his helper dragged the furniture out to a dirty and cluttered old van which made me nervous. He shoved the pieces in and I was very uncomfortable with this procedure and I told him I wasn't happy. He left with 2/3 of my sectional as I had a sinking feeling in my gut. The deposit was cashed right away. That was the last time I ever spoke to Bobby. The next week, I received a call from his brother. I asked him about the leather match from Newport Beach. He had no clue what I was talking about. He told me that his workers were having a lot of trouble repairing my sectional due to the large amount of staples in the sectional. I knew in my gut that this was a scam and the next thing would be to charge me more. I told him to return the sectional if he couldn't perform the job. He was extremely defensive and said that he didn't say he couldn't repair it, but since there were so many staples that he needed more time than the 10 days initially promised. I told him his brother arranged for the 10 day time frame but if he needed a little more time that was ok. After that, I didn't hear from him and I started to worry again. I called him and asked him to return the sectional. He told me it was gone now and had been sent out to be sewn since he was having trouble. I told him I never agreed to have the property removed and sent somewhere else. I wanted my sectional back NOW! Since that time, I have left many messages with no return call. I called the police a few days ago and they located their business address in a residential area. Now I'm thinking there is no business license either. The police told me that they could provide an escort to recover the property, but since it had been removed I had no idea where it is now. I am stuck with 1/3 of a sectional and no idea how to recover the property! This is consumer fraud and something must be done!
