You do not need to switch to the new refrigerant. According to the EPA, existing systems that use R-22 can still be serviced, used, and maintained. In 2020 R-22 will no longer be produced however your system can still be used as long as the refrigerant is recycled or reclaimed. The EPA has been phasing out the use of R-22 for several year now. In 2010 no new equipment made uses R-22. Angie's List frowns upon including weblinks in these reviews. However, i feel that it is important in this case. More info: http://www.epa.gov/ozone/title6/phaseout/22phaseout.html More info: http://epa.gov/ozone/title6/downloads/EPA.homeowners.9-06-06.pdf My parents contacted a reputable company who serviced the blower motor on the furnace. The heat was back up and running in less than an hour and cost them under $100.00.
Description of Work: Tried to sell my retired parents a whole new HVAC system for over $10,000 when all they needed was routine service on the blower motor of their furnace. The salesperson tried to scare my parents by falsely claiming that the EPA would fine them for not changing their a/c system to a new one that uses the new refrigerant, R-410A. This is all BS to scare retirees out of their money. The EPA will not come and fine you for having a HVAC system that uses R-22.

I called Hi-Tech for a service call, because the blower motor was acting odd,by shutting off, when AC was running.A sevice rep named Joe,showed up about 45 minutes later.Hooked his gauges up to the AC unit, and told me to turn the unit on.When I came back outside,Joe stated that I needed a New AC unit, because the compressor in mine was going bad.I asked how he knew this, and he pointed at the compressor side gauge, that was moving back and forth a little. Then Joe said he could get me a NEW AC unit for 6000.00. I told Joe,that I would think about it,knowing all along that he was full of BS.Anyone with some HVAC experiance knows that the compressor will show a little pressure variation, when a AC unit first starts up,but it will balance out after the head pressure stabilizes which takes from 5 to 8 minutes of run time.As for the 6000.00 AC unit,I could buy a much better one with a lifetime compressor warranty and 10 year all other parts for 1800.00 and have it delivered free to my front door.So my main concern is that people in the Las Vegas area, especially retirees, are getting scammed by this Hi-Tech company here. The problem with my AC,was a weak blower motor capacitor,on the furnace.
Description of Work: The service Rep was more interested in selling a New AC unit, than fixing the problem, that was a weak Blower motor capacitor. In fact he never looked at that,or ask me what the problem was.
