+ -1 moreI normally get my Infiniti serviced at the dealership but they recently suggested almost $3K in repairs. Talk about sticker shock! Being new to Vegas I used Angie's and found Family. With car repairs you sometimes just cross your fingers but at least Family had a lot of very god reviews. I called them and he offered the same services for about 40 percent of the price. Took it in. Fred showed me everything he was doing, I felt very comfortable with their competence and quality, and the price seemed fair. He also offered a one-year warranty, which is great because who can know the workmanship after only a couple of days. Take the coupon on here it saved me $50. I would DEFINITELY go back.
Description of Work: Repair left axle, new rear brakes (and rotors thanks to living in Canada), new rear shock absorbers

+ -1 moreI brought the car in to replace the front-end on appointment made the week before. This is a day-long job for a lot of reasons and didn't have a ride back to my home, so Fred, the owner, took me himself after filling out the paperwork for the repairs. (It was originally going to be less than the price stated below, but the front-bearing assemblies had to be replaced also, which I OKed over the phone; Fred deleted costs on some extra fasteners/parts because the bearings weren't in the original estimate.) Toward the end of day, Fred called and said some of the parts delivered were the wrong ones, and he had to re-order, but it meant the repairs wouldn't be completed the next day; this wasn't a problem as I expected it might happen, and OKed this also. The next day, Fred called and said the car was ready and he would come pick me up. I didn't expect him to bring my own car; he handed me the keys and said drive it on the way back to the shop and make sure I was satisfied with the repair-work and handling. Repair-shop should offer to do this more often.) Completely satisfied with the way the car was driving, he showed me all the old parts back at the shop that had been removed to make sure I understood what was done. Paid-in-full with a years-warranty on parts/labor. I have not had any reoccurance of the problems with the car since then.
Description of Work: Front-end replacement. (Struts, etc.) I do a lot of repairs and maintenance for my cars, but this needed to be done in a repair-shop.

Description of Work: First visit determined the work that needed to be done and the end result was a radiator was installed and there was no problem with that. However the follow-up visit that was to determine the next step started to unravel things. The diagnostic part determined that a couple of parts needed to be ordered and I never, thankfully, heard back. As it turns out, I took my vehicle to the dealer for another issue and while it was there they found and fixed the problems I was having - by replacing a fuse.

The mechanic carefully explained what was making the noises and what was broken and told us what needed to be fixed to make the car safe to drive. The atmosphere of the shop was efficient and professional and everyone seemed to be enjoying their work. They did all the necessary repairs and made detailed recommendations for other things that need attention. It is so reassuring to find a mechanic who is honest and treats me with respect when my car is in need of expert eyes. We were very pleased and will definitely use this shop again.

+ -1 moreThe owner, Fred, was polite and professional. Since I am a female who knows very little about cars, I am always apprehensive when I need to have my car worked on. I got a "good vibe" from him. His mechanic performed the service, and, although they specialize in European cars, I was assured that they would work on my 1996 Toyota. The transaction took about two hours. I was surprised that the bill was less than I expected to pay. I was impressed that they just fixed the problem without telling me other things that needed to be done on my car. At other auto shops in the past, people have told me so many things that needed to be repaired, and scared me into fixing things that probably didn't really need to be fixed! After the mechanic had done the repair work, he showed me the broken part that had been on my car. It probably would have broken down soon. Fred also offered me a cold bottle of water! I have a new favorite place for car repair.
Description of Work: My car had a belt that was squealing, and there was loud knocking when the air conditioner was on. They said it was a harmonic carrier (not sure if that is the correct term) that had separated, causing belts to slip. It was replaced.

+ -1 moreI have a 2008 Smartcar Passion and have always been limited to the dealership (first Towbin, then Mercedes Dealerships) for my maintenance work. Being a specialty type vehicle not too many auto care businesses have knowledge or training in this type of European vehicle other than the dealership. Only problem was they would charge an arm and a leg for basic maintenance. Being retired, with limited income, I found the dealerships prices to be outrageous for regular maintenance. Being an Angies List member, I decided to contact a company that worked on european type vehicles. The first business I contacted was Family Auto Care located at 5001 West Charleston. Blvd. I spoke with Fred, the owner, who advised that they have a mechanic who works on Smartcars. I set up an appointment for an oil change and regular maintenace. Upon my arrival I met with Fred who advised that it would take approximately 2 hours to complete. I returned 2 hours later and the vehicle was done. When I received the invoice, I was pleasantly surprised to see it was for $73,00. I have never left the dealership before for under $300. Fred advised that oil he uses is the same quality oil that the Mercedes dealership uses in their vehicles. I was very pleased with the service that I had received and especially the savings. I am looking forward to my next service.

+ -1 moreWhen we called Family Auto Care, our questions were answered by a friendly, knowledgeable person named Fred. He was patient and took the time to answer all our questions, and we had a lot of questions.. Our 1998 Dodge Durango had leaks, side door that wouldn't open, windows that didn't work, a/c that didn't work, and was in desperate need of tune up, oil change and TLC. We weren't sure if there was hope for our Durango, but Fred reassured us he could take care of all the issues. When we picked up our Durango, Fred had all the old parts and explained all the work he did for us. Not only did he take care of all our problems, but Fred followed up with a telephone call a few days after we picked up our car to be sure our car was running well and we were happy with his work. We would not hesitate to take our car there in the future and would recommend him to anyone wanting an honest, knowledgeable auto repair place. Thanks Fred for a great job!!

+ -1 moreAs I said above everything was done just exactly as I had requested no problems. Family Auto Care is an excellent place to have your vehicle taken care of by the experts. All work was completed and done. The car was in and out in one day.
Description of Work: I called Fred in advance to talk to him about what I needed done to my Honda accord. We went over all the details and he was very professional and very polite. I had the timing belt changed and the water pump... I wanted to use a Honda water pump, so he said he would get one for me, and he did. I had the drive belt replaced, power steering and AC belt drive replaced, also the timing belt tensioner replaced. There was a broken engine mount that needed to be replace. I had no idea there was a broken engine mount. Had my oil changed, they did a 40 point check on the entire vehicle, topped off all the fluids, checked the brakes, checked the tires. And other things too numerous to mention. Fred told me the timeframe for when I needed to get my tires replaced and how long they would last, also explained to me when I would need the brakes checked again. I also wanted to see all the parts that were taken out of the vehicle and the packaging for the Honda water pump. Fred had everything there and ready for me to see. He did not know in advance that I was going to ask for all these items. I thought the price was pretty good seeing how I had all that work done. I am new to the area and I did not know where to take my car to be serviced. I checked Angie's list and saw Family Auto Care had very good reviews. Fred is an honest capable and very knowledgeable mechanic on everything that needs to be done to keep your car running smoothly. In the future if I need any more service done on my vehicle. I will bring my vehicle to Family Auto Care.

You couldn't of asked for a better place to take your vehicle to get everything done that needs to be done. + -1 moreI almost drove past the garage as it's located in a building that looks like it used to be a gas station. Glad I didn't miss it! The service itself was hundreds less than a local garage that I used to go to and I authorized Fred, the owner, to charge me up to 2 hours labor to try and find the computer and/or wiring problem that was causing the heated seats and garage door opener not to function. It was also preventing the mechanic from re-setting the "Service Due" message on the dash display. They performed the service per Porsche requirements flawlessly of course but I was stunned when after they spent the 2 hours I authorized them to charge me for troubleshooting the more complicated computer/wiring problem, Fred declined to bill for the time I had agreed to pay. They did find the problem but it required a proprietary Porsche download to the computer that they do not release to independent garages. Apparently when we had a battery change out a while back (not at Family Auto Care) they interrupted the power supply briefly instead of connecting a constant source of 12v power and it lost the programing code. Although no independent garage has the program code, Fred introduced me to a local Porsche Service Manager he knew personally and since the problem was already identified it reduced the time needed to resolve. Family Auto Care and Fred are now our regular garage for both our cars. He's very knowledgeable, definitely honest and a genuinely nice guy. Thanks again Fred! Rod & Suzette Brubeck Las Vegas, NV.

Description of Work: First visit with my new (used) customized 2004 Thunderbird. I switched to synthetic oil and asked Fred (owner) and his beautiful Katrina (BIG parrot) to give it the once over to see if there was anything I should be concerned about. I know cars and I thought I'd caught everything that needed attention, but Fred found a leaking rear strut. Nothing immediate, but whoever installed it simply overtightened it, causing a slow leak. We talked cars for awhile and this guy really knows what he's doing! Quality, professionalism, reasonable prices, and he goes the extra mile. I went there because of Angie's List recommendations and was not disappointed. Now, Fred is my car guy! I won't let anyone else touch it. My wife and I decided to commit to this car, it's a great car that has been moderately customized and technologically updated to today's standards. We will pass it along to our children, my "Blackbird" is a member of our family now, and so is Family Auto Care.

+ -1 moreI was told on the phone there was no charge to find problem on vehicle. Then I was told by the mechanic there was an $85 diagnostic text charge. He also wanted to sell me an alternator for $320. I said I had one of my own I could bring in, but he didn't want to use the one I had because there is no guarantee that it was in good condition although it had been tested at AutoZone. I had the bad one on my vehicle tested and he found there was a wire not operating properly and the alternator was no longer working. What I wanted him to do was take the bad one off and put the other one on, but he didn't want to. I had to purchase another new one for the mechanic to put on so that he wouldn't have to take it off again and charge me more money. He wasn't expecting a 10% off coming from the customer, but I presented him with my Angie's List member ID and told him I found his services through an ad in the magazine. First, he quoted me at $136, then I mentioned I was a member and he said $130, but I pointed out 10% would have been $124, which he honored. I am very grateful for Angie's List for being there for me though.

+ -1 moreMy personal mechanic replaced the water pump on my car (HUGE job on a Lexus) but we still had a leak so he referred me to Fred, the owner of Family Auto Care. He quoted me a price for a diagnosis ($65) and a price if the water pump needed to be reinstalled ($400). He called me the same day to report he had found the leak in the thermostat housing. He removed it , changed the O-ring and applied a sealant. He said it needed to dry and he would pressure test it again tomorrow. Called me next day to say all was well and bill = $158.00 !!! Took the time to answer my questions and showed me on the car where the work was done. His explanations were thorough, sensible and he talks to you in a respectful manner. He provided a detailed and itemized list of work and charges. Will definitely use his services again.

+ 0 moreHe was able to repair all 3 and all 3 issues were resolved. I took the car home that day and noticed that there was a small leak. Took it back that day and he fixed the leak. His warranty is 12 months or 12,000 miles.
