Abel Gandara responded to my request for an estimate. He spent quite a bit of time looking at everything, measuring and I thought that the company was going to be as good as the reviews here were. He wanted a $3,000 down payment, which I gave him. They were booked 3-4 weeks into the future already. I called last week to ensure that they were on schedule and he said they were, but he would call me if anything changed. The trouble started yesterday morning when the "roofing crew" didn't show up as scheduled. It took me several hours and lots of phone calls to get ahold of Abel. I was nervous both because of the reputation roofing companies have and also because I had taken time off from work to get this done. I have four dogs and I didn't want anything untoward to happen. So the "new" crew arrived this morning at 5:45 am. They didn't break or destroy anything .... until they got on the roof. Then, "someone" did something to the swamp cooler and it stopped working. When I said something to Abel, "someone" apparently told him it was probably an "old motor." No, it's a new motor. So next the "carpenter" Jaime, said it was probably the switch inside my house. So I let him in and he looked at the switch. He said there was nothing wrong inside and he said he would fix whatever his guys broke outside. Then, we had an issue with the overhang over the back door. I needed to have it rebuilt... because once we got the roofing off, it was easy to see that it had been poorly constructed. I was suspicious when "Jaime," the "carpenter," said he couldn't start the repair until they had agreed on money. He kept rubbing his thumb against his fingers to indicate "cash." So now, it's only a few hours into the job and I have a swamp cooler that isn't working and an overhang that needs to be rebuilt so they can start shingling the back part of the roof tomorrow. I say this because now they have left and the overhang is nowhere near complete. Only the 2x4s have been installed. But that's not the biggest part of the story. About an hour and a half ago, someone went Through the Roof and through my kitchen ceiling. When I went to talk with Jaime, he didn't even seem to know that someone had gone through the roof. He said it was "my fault" because the "roof was old" and didn't have the right thickness of plywood. Earlier that day, we were all on the roof and we had a conversation about how the roof was tender in places but when Abel first came, we agreed to replace all the bad sheets. So now Jaime's crew has left, and they left the overhang undone, AND although they put something on the roof to cover the outside hole, there is ceiling debris and insulation all over my kitchen. They made no effort whatsoever to do anything about it. He kept saying it was "an accident." I said, No, if they did this for a living, then they should have known and taken steps. That was when I realized that he didn't repair the bad piece because they hadn't brought enough plywood. It's now 2:46 pm. I haven't been able to post the pictures for some reason. I do not have air conditioning; my Boxer boys have finally calmed down after being terrorized from the ceiling cashing through. I have not heard one single peep from the owner, Bob, although I have left two messages. I have called a lawyer because I don't know what else to do.
Description of Work: I needed my roof replaced. My home was built in 1962.

The owner Bob seemed personable enough and acted as though he truly cared about our roof being done properly. He said when we get the new roof we'll notice a huge difference in our electric bill - which is what we need since we have a child on life support. During the interview, not once did he mention that the FIRST hailstorm will destroy the entire roof. He never mentioned hail damaging it all. On the contrary when I asked how long it would last he stated "a lifetime! You'll just need a simple re-coat every 10 years." He insisted on a deposit up-front and began work a few weeks later. After a long wait, and begging him to come out and start the project during the expensive summer heat, he parked his huge truck in our front yard. It stayed there a week - advertising his company, but no workmen. Our HOA does not allow that, so we asked him when will he start? He finally had to move the truck to "use for another job" and then came back a few weeks later. Horrible wait, but he had our money and made sure we signed the contract-we were legally bound. Long story short, we paid $10,000 for the roof and when the hail damaged it on the first storm, he told us to call our insurance to file a claim. One storm and already we file a claim?! He also wanted to be present because he said he could "get them to pay more and I won't even charge you your deductible.. just watch." Well, that already sounded fishy and I told my insurance company when I called what he told us. I explained up-front his intent. We scheduled the date and then on the day he said he had to reschedule (can he ever show up on time?!) and he wants us to reschedule with the insurance. We did not reschedule. They came out and saw the shotty lower level work and offered $8,000 to fix it. They brought a roofer with them who guaranteed his foam cover would be stronger through the hail storms since it's a good coat. We've had several contractors, and our insurance (which should NOT be involved since this was a faulty install) come and look at the roof. The upper portion, which seems to have been coated properly, does not have damage - it is equally open to the elements, contrary to Mr. Underhill's claims that "it's protected by trees" it is not. However, the lower portion where he skimped on materials has severe damage. When he was asked why it was already damaged on the 1st small hailstorm, he replied, "I underbid this project." So I guess he makes up for it by scamming insurance companies and homeowners once the first hail storm hits. Had he of told me, "hail will destroy this roof", I never ever would have had it installed. The insurance quoted $8,000 to fix it - that's what they'll pay HIM. Well, that wasn't enough for him. He said he could "get more" out of them. After much prompting he finally sent us a bid for repairs.. $19,000. He's all about the money and not quality, it's very obvious now. EDIT: After seeing my negative review, the warranty holder corporation who guarantees the warranties on roofs done by Amerus, contacted me and said they would like to see the roof. He offered to come look at my roof and take a sample; stating it?s possible the materials were factory defective. Luckily, yes, they were and my brand new roof with hail damage was repaired without the need of my insurance company. So although I would not give a gleaming review, I will say that the warranty company did repair my brand new foam roof promptly on behalf of Amerus.

Description of Work: We called for an estimate for replacing or repairing our roof (9/11/14). They were fairly quick to return our first call. Set up an appointment for a hands-on estimate. They were fairly punctual in arriving at our house (9/12/14). However, they never got back to us with a quote. We called to remind them and they did not return our call and still have not provided a quote. Since our early communications with them, we have had torrential rains and leaking in our house ~ which will result in more expense in having our ceiling repaired and painted.

Response from Amerus Roofing & Coatings
First off, the Bonds were never and are not currently a Customer of Amerus Roofing. Unfortunately, we were not able to get an estimate to the Bonds for about 3 weeks due to a family emergency. However, we did send them 2 estimates; one to repair their roof and one to replace their roof. And after sending them the estimates we followed up with them through the end of 2014 and at that time, according to them, they still had not fixed their roof. In no way, shape or form is Amerus Roofing responsible for any leaks, interior damage, or hail damage they incurred as Amerus Roofing NEVER did any work for them. We simply walked their roof for damage and provided estimates.

Our TPO roof had never leaked but a recent house inspection indicated we may have problems. I had some area roofers look at the roof and give their opinion. The roofers all wanted to re-install the entire roof at considerable expense. I searched for a TPO specialist and found Amerus roofing. I told them my story. In less than 1 week they inspected the roof, briefed me and showed me lots of things about the roof and said how well it was installed. They said that since the house was built there have been some new manufacturer recommendations about requiring TPO pipe jacks. That was the only issue. They sent me a proposal which I immediately accepted. On the day they scheduled they arrived on time. They asked me to get on the roof and observe what they were doing. It was very apparent that they were incredibly skilled at their jobs. I now feel very sure that my roof is in excellent condition.
Description of Work: Roof Inspection and installation of TPO pipe jacks. Probe all welds on pipes and seams. I was very impressed with the service, how knowledgeable the workers were. I would highly recommend this roofing company to anyone.

Description of Work: Replaced the roof on my house. They knew how to work with the insurance company so that everything went smooth. I was given advice as to the best type of roof for the best ventilation for our hot summers. They covered the ground to protect plants and used a magnet when finished to pick up any nails. We have already had some hard wind and everything is in good shape. I highly recommend Amerus Roofing.
