A boutique firm that was started by one woman, operated by one woman, employees from 4-6 laborers and sub-contractors for technical work and administrative personnel. Our designs, pebble mosaics and installations are billed with 50% upon signing agreement and 50% upon completion. I visited customer after receiving her phonecall requesting a price to dig a trench. When I gave the customer the price, I also said we would not use the trenching machine. It is not safe to use a trenching machine on a steep slope. The men who are working that machine run a risk of the machine turning over on top of them, the machine getting stuck in the sand and so forth. I reviewed the possible risks. My company has been taking concrete steps to ensure safety on our jobsites. I relayed the safety issues I saw to the customer and offered to do the project using a chipping hammer and shovels. The customer said she thought those were not 'real tools' and felt this job could not be done without the use of what she feels are real tools. Out of respect for her opinion and our differences, I gave her a price to do the work in what I think is a safe way to dig an 18"+ deep and more than 50' long trench; $700.00. After looking into this further, I felt the client would not be happy with my way of making the trench since she was very insistent on using trenching equipment that was both unsafe and not intended for use on a slope. We seek to provide safety and satisfaction for myself, my crew and my clients need to be part of each of our projects as well as making a profit.
