Mike Lopez Roofing did our new foam roof a few years ago, and they did excellent work. It lowered our energy bill substantially and added to the resale value of our house now that we’re selling it. They’ve been responsive with us ever since — even now, Sean Lopez is helping us with a last-minute request to make sure our sale goes through — thanks Sean!

We are extremely pleased with our full re-roof performed Mike Lopez Roofing. Our priorities were - a long wearing roof that with annual maintenance will last decades; a fire retardant substance; a water resistant substance; reroofing performed by a reputable company that we can count on for years to come; a job that should we move we can count on to enhance the value of our home with easy guarantees transference . Mike Lopez Roofing uses a foam product. They wrapped all of the cars in a three house vicinity whether high wind or not. Clean-up and the come and go of crew was seamless. The crew were extremely professional and easy to communicate with. We spoke directly with the foam manufacturer to answer additional material questions. The Mfg. Rep confirmed that Mike Lopez Roofing blows one of the finest finished products in the Santa Fe community. We worked directly with Sean Lopez, son of the owner. Sean is responsive, kind, and most importantly interested in providing the best service and product. We are thrilled. Thank you, Sean, and out best to your crew. Michael and Anita

DO NOT HIRE this company unless you're willing to get cancer or suffer property damage and cause the same to all your neighbors! This company is a health hazard to the entire county and they destroy your property with apparent immunity. Companies like this exist only because people that suffer at their hands stay quiet. Well, I’m not intimidated by Mike Lopez and not only will I expose him but I will be reporting him to every health organization possible and have all of his licenses revoked. Mr. Lopez is apparently all about making money and he doesn’t care if he does it at the expense of your health, your pets’ health, damage to your property, poisoning your food, and even ordering you off your own property! I didn’t hire this guy and I never would. My neighbor did. And what a mistake he made. First and foremost, the foam this guy sprays is made up of isocyanate and polyol resin. Isocyanates include compounds classified as carcinogens and have been shown to cause cancer in animals and humans alike. Exposure to isocyanates enflame existing asthma and also cause it as well as other lung problems, the least of these are irritation of the eyes, nose, throat, and skin. Does he go around the neighbors and explain what’s his company is about to do? NO! Does he take precautions in order to not poison everyone around? NO! Does he show care and protect your property from damage? NO! Does he show any care about your pets? NO! My neighbor got a new foam roof but here’s what I got living right next door to him: A damaged expensive Mercedes; $300-$400 to fix! A backyard full of his foam parts and foam dust and my dogs can no longer go outside. 4 days and nights of headaches, irritated sinuses, and poison to breathe. A vegetable garden full of his poisonous foam dust and it will have to be dug up and new soil put in. A house loaded with his poisonous foam dust caked in everything from the window screens to all over my BBQ. Large chunks of foam for decoration. God knows what kind of cancer which will show up years from now. Oh and the icing on the cake: when I finally talked to Mr. Lopez or someone pretending to be him (I would hide too if I were him) he tells me that I’m “in a construction zone” and to move my car; from my own driveway! And accuses me of impeding his crews from “doing work” when I chase them away from my car because they were trying to cover it after the fact. Mike Lopez Roofing, spreading poison and damaging your property soon! And being rude because you're one of the little people he can yell at and step on because you can't "impede" him!

I wrote a very different review for another job that this company did for me a few years ago but I did hire them again since they owed me a refund on some insulation they did not install the last time on the other roof and their estimate was again reasonable. This time they put all the insulation down that they quoted on and did a very good job installing the membrane roofing over it. They also gave me a very good warranty that is even transferable in case the house gets sold. I can't figure out how to delete the old review I wrote but here is my new one. This time the experience was much much better. The crew also did a great job cleaning up after themselves at the end of each day.

Told us we needed to replace our 11-year-old home's original roof. Three other roofers said all we needed was the usual pre-winter patching. One of them did the patching and all is well. If we run into trouble during the winter, I'll let you know the first man was right after all. Stay turned.

Initially their estimate was reasonable, not the lowest but also not the highest. I would have been fine paying what they estimated but not after what happened during installation. They removed all the old roofing, and even after examining the existing roof before they made the estimate, there were core samples taken, they told me they had to charge over $2,000 extra because there were more layers than they thought. I had to agree to that because of a clause in the contract. Then they proceeded to install the new roofing which per contract was supposed to have a layer of styro-foam that would create a positive pitch in all 4 directions for drainage, and 4 inches of rigid polyurethane insulation to provide a total of R36 insulation. They put down the styro-foam panels and the started to install the membrane. By the time I noticed that they did not add the other polyurethane panels for installation they were already halfway into the membrane installation. I told them to put also the other insulation panels down and Mike Lopez argued that the styro-foam they used to provide the pitch is some kind of high value insulation material. This was a complete lie, there is no such thing. Only after me sending him R-values for the different material did he agree to install the polyurethane panels. But again they cheated by only installing 2 inches of that. I did not know this until the roof was done and I installed the inside of a skylight, when I could see the insulation and realized it was only two instead of four inches! After lots of phone calls and emails, during which Mike Lopez always said his father has to make the decision on what to do, I did not get anywhere. They refused to redo it or give me a discount for the lesser insulation. Finally Mike Lopez agreed to give me a credit of a little over $2,000 for a future roofing job, which I obviously will never be able to use since I do not plan to ever hire them again. The contract also prevents me from going to court because it stipulates arbitration. I would never ever hire them again because they are cheating with the materials. Do not fall for Mike Lopez's friendly demeanor. He is not to be trusted at all!

Sean Lopez came out to look at a leak that I felt might be covered under a five year warranty that we were given two years ago for work performed around air conditioning vents on the roof. He stated that he had come out to the home the prior Thursday and looked at the issue and that we needed a complete roof replacement. He said he left a card the door, but we found no card on the door. He stated that we never called his office, but we have cell phone records that show our first contact to him was July 8th after the company repeatedly disregarded and did not return phone calls to our general contractor. He was not willing to even attempt to fix the leaks around the vents that he performed work on. He then told my general contractor that I refused to let him access the roof, but our security cameras show that I granted him access to the property on three different occasions. I personally refused to climb the 30 feet onto the roof because he had already told me that he is not responsible for the water leaking around the two vents in the house. He was unprofessional, rude, and threatening. He was late and did not bring a ladder earlier that morning so we had to reschedule a meeting for later that afternoon where the above took place. His last words to me were that I could send the Warranty that he did not give me to his attorney. I would attach a photo of it here, if I could. Don't use this company. The lack of communication and arrogance is reason enough. This is my first and hopefully last bad review to ever put on Angies List.
Description of Work: Tried to reach the company for over two weeks regarding a leak in two areas of my home, of which they did the primary work in 2013.

Response from Mike Lopez Roofing LLC
These claims are erroneous. Mike Lopez Roofing, LLC never received calls, emails or a letter by US-mail corresponding that their was a leak(s) in her roof system. It was brought to my attention last Tuesday July 7, 2015 at approximately 1:45 pm by Mr.{name removed}of {company name removed}. he stated that there is a leak(s) that need repair at {address removed}. I went to the said address on July 9, 2015 in the afternoon to meet with the homeowners and to examine the roof issues. No one was available at this residence, I left my business card on a door near the garage. I placed my roof ladder and climb on top of the roof to perform an inspection. I discovered that the majority of the Spray Polyurethane Foam Roof System on this residence was failing rapidly because of advanced water infiltration. Please be advised this SPF roof system was not installed by Mike Lopez Roofing. It was installed by another spray foam roofing company {company name removed} who is no longer in business. We were hired by {company name removed} to seal HVAC duct-work penetration installed by {Company name removed}. Our (5) Five year warranty only covers these HVAC penetrations on the existing roof system. Mike Lopez Roofing is not liable for the old roof placed by another company, we will continue to honor our warranty for these HVAC penetrations. Please note that Mike Lopez Roofing, LLC has been serving business in our community and in the State of New Mexico since 1975. Our mission is the core of our culture. Our customers always come first and we strive to provide them with quality roofing products that best suit their needs. Building trust and fostering loyal, long lasting relationships are the essence f who we are and fundamental part of our company values.

Having to re-roof an 8 year old home, and realizing how the original contractor and sub-contractor had scammed us, created definite sticker shock. Having our suspicions confirmed, and having endured multiple repairs of leaks, solidified the necessity of having the complete roof redone. As with any roofing job you are dependent upon the weather, and completion of jobs scheduled before yours. Consequently our job did get postponed for approximately a month, but the wait was worth it. This company knows their business, and excels in customer service. Every one of their employees works diligently, is pleasant, and will answer any and all of your numerous questions. Sean Lopez was immediately responsive to our every concern. Even though we were dealing with foam roofing and sporadic rain, the site was cleaned up every day, and the section of roof they worked on was completed and sealed before they left, so there were never any water issues. (This was a ten day job.) We were beyond happy with this company, and would definitely recommend them.

Work is progressing according plan, 6-7 days for our 2600 sq. ft. home and 2 car garage. I will post more details when I return to Santa Fe and see the completion of the roof. 8/1/13 Beautiful roof, if a roof can be said to be beautiful : ) Sean kept me informed during the process. We had 4 rotten canales and alot of rotted decking underneath the old roof. Mike Lopez Roofing repaired everything. They worked on the roof in sections so that each section was weather sealed by the end of that day. Gabino and his crew were neat and professional. There were concerns over some bubbling on the top coat. I called Sean, left a msg and within 20 minutes he called me back...from my roof! The bubbling is cosmetic and will be taken care of when the crew returns to replace skylights and fine tune any details needing attention. I had a crew come right behind Mike Lopez Roofing to begin to re-stucco the house. Sean spoke with the crew and the contractor about the bubbling and let them know that it was OK to walk on. There were 2 occasions of heavy rain after the roof was complete, and we had leaks in 2 different places. Once again when I called Sean, he returned my call immediately and send Gabino to take a look. The old stucco had some cracks that were causing the leaks. The stucco crew did some patching that helped. As soon as the stucco work is done, Mike Lopez Roofing will go over the entire roof and take care of any problems. Thanks Sean!
Description of Work: I was referred to Mike Lopez Roofing by a local contractor. Our 26 year old home in Santa Fe still had it's original roof. We purchased this home September 2012 knowing that we would need to replace the roof ASAP. We are from Texas and had no experience with the types of roofing systems used in New Mexico. We contacted 4 other roofers, 3 used the BRAI system, 1 used tar and gravel or BRAI, Mike Lopez Roofing was the only company who used the Spray foam insulation (SPF). When I contacted Sean Lopez he spent some time on the phone with me describing the 3 systems and listing the pros and cons of each type. The price was going to be about the same for each type of roof as the old roofing had to be removed due to New Mexico's laws concerning the materials used 25 years ago. The SPF just made sense to us. Sean completed an inspection and prepared a bid for us while we were in Texas. He then hand delivered the bid to me the next time I was in Santa Fe and followed up with a phone call. I scheduled an appointment for Sean to talk with my husband while he was in Santa Fe. Sean is very friendly, professional, knowledgeable and takes pride in his (and his father's) company. We decided to go with SPF and Mike Lopez Roofing. Sean brought a sample section of the roofing system for us to provide to our HOA for approval. Work began July 1 and as of today, the roof is not complete but I expect it to be done in the next couple of days. Sean has kept in contact with me by phone and sent photos of some damage that they uncovered in the decking and the canales.

I have a large 4500 square foot house built in 2005 with an additional guest house, The people who I bought the house from apparently went with a low bid roofer who was a scam artist. He later went into bankruptcy and skipped the state after doing several hundred roofs in the Santa Fe area. After my roof began leaking in a number of places, I got 5 different roof quotes from people in the area. Most said they did not need a building permit (wrong) and would just throw another roof over the existing rooof. Sean at Mike Lopez Roofing was by far the most professional of the people I spoke with. He gave me a number of references and I called them, All were very happy and complimentary with the work they had done. I had a polyurethane roof put on and they did an excellent job. They completely removed the old roof a section at a time. I have gas radiant heat in the floors. I compared my bills over two winters and the gas bills went down in January and February 57% from the year before. The electric bills went down 44%. It took approximately 3-4 week to do the job and they used a crew of 5-6 men. They continually cleaned up and removed the debris and were very neat. I highly recommend Mike Lopez Roofing.

I was pleasantly surprised when they arrived on the date Sean Lopez, managing partner, said they would. Contractor's crew immediately installed visqueen curtains around the house and landscaping to protect same from debris and windblown foam. Then, each morning they removed small sections of existing roof, and that afternoon, in order to protect my house from afternoon rain squalls sprayed new foam on the exposed roof decking. The crew was very friendly and pleasant! The foreman (Gabion) willing to discuss and explain everything they were doing - in summary, they were absolutely wonderful to work with! After completion of the foam and the subsequent application of acrylic coating I became concerned when some bubble blisters developed in the acrylic. I left a message for Sean voicing my concerns, and on the same day, he had his foreman back to my roof to remedy same. This positive response on his part was exceptionally impressive! Sean also assured me that with an energy efficient foam roof we would notice some difference in our energy bills. Its to early to tell on the utility bills but one thing became very obvious the moment the foam was complete, our inside ambient high temperature each day dropped by a significant 6 degrees! It isn't always easy to give a small subcontractor a glowing review. I can say this with some authority because for close to 30 years, I made my living in General Engineering Construction as a project manager, estimator and Owner. I oversaw the bidding and construction of highways, large pipelines, logging roads, airports and hydro electric facilities in Oregon, California and Nevada. In all of those projects and those years I dealt with a wide variety of specialized subcontractors, a huge percentage of which were a major headache to deal with! Sean Lopez of Mike Lopez Roofing is an exception! He is a man of his word and his crew a rare assemblage of men who take exceptional pride in their work. I would recommend Mike Lopez Roofing highly to anyone who needs a new roof.

see above. Oh, and also, got to love dealing with one guy then them sending out other people who don't speak English to do the work.
Description of Work: The house was re-roofed previous to my purchase. I had a transferable warranty, but the customer service i received when i called Mike Lopez roofing was horrendous. I had to argue with whoever answered the phone to get my roof serviced. For as long as I've lived here, I've never had a non leaking roof. I call them every time it rains. they send someone to "fix" it, again, with much difficulty, but the leaks are never fixed. I had them replace the roof on a house i used to own as a rental, and that never worked either. I was told Mike Lopez roofing was the best roofer in town. If that's the case, then I'm calling a roofer from Arizona to fix my leaking roof. Oh, i have water damage in EVERY room in my house.

With the repairs and the weather starting this job took some time. Upon actual start it was super fast. The workers were very nice and cleaned up everyday and took very special care to guard the houses and property of everyone on the block. We could not have asked for a more complete job. I enjoyed seeing how they did 'this and that' as the work took shape. This is a very nice sort of roof and appears to be well worth investing in. I can look around the other houses and see that Our roof is the best!

I contacted Mike Lopez Roofing for a bid on a new roof. Mike's son, I think his name was Sean, was very personable and informative re: roofing options over the phone and so I was quite positive about meeting with him. When he came to our home to give me a bid he informed me that the city had enacted new rules as of July 1st, 2011 that required that there only be one layer of roof on a home and so we would have to tear off the existing roof regardless of the condition of the roof decking and replace it. This of course would naturally increase the costs. I was secptical of this information and so asked other roofers who were giving me bids about this new city requirement and none of them had heard of this "new" regulation. In another conversation when I mentioned this to Sean he stated that he was sure this was a regulation and that other companies must not be keeping up with the regulations. To clarify this for myself I called the Santa Fe building department to ask if there was a new regulation that mandated only one layer of roof. I had two people from the city return my call both stating that this was not a regulation and that you could have two layers of roof. Sean contacted me again to tell me that he would be sending me my requested bid that day. I told him that I'd contacted the city building department and learned that there was no such regulation. He gave a vague response about checking into it and ended the conversation. He never did send me the bid he said he was sending. Roofers in this town have rather negative reputations and it is experiences like this that make me understand how they have earned them. I would never do business with Mike Lopez Roofing based on this experience. Fran

Response from Mike Lopez Roofing LLC
Thank you for your feedback. To clarify any misconceptions, our company operates under the rules and regulations of the State of New Mexico which overpowers any regulations of municipalities of New Mexico (such as Santa Fe). In other words, we follow state regulations, not city regulations. The law, as stated in the New Mexico Administration Code in Section R907.3, section 4: New roof covering shall not be installed without first removing existing roof coverings where any of the following conditions occur.... (4) Where pumice or other granular fill are present. Existing roofing and granular fill must be removed prior to re-roofing. In this situation the member's roof was made of a pumice fill, meaning that we are required by code to tear off the existing roof prior to a re-roof. We are very sorry for any misunderstanding.

I was so impressed with Sean's professionalism, courteousness, punctuality, communication, and thoroughness. Sean explained the process to me, gave me estimate and did not go over that, did additional work and included it in the cost of the roof replacement. I can't really rate the quality as the job is new and we've not had much rain since the roof was replaced but I completely expect that the quality of the team's work is A+ like all the other qualities that matter to me when someone is working on my home and I'm spending a lot of money! The cost is what it is. I asked around (no others looking at roof) and believe that the cost to replace my roof is in line. Another thing I love is that the crew was careful of my property and cleaned up after themselves! I'm so happy with the quality service Mike Lopez Roofing provided. Sometimes it's not just excellent work product but the small things that make the difference. Yes, I'd hire this company again!

Sean Lopez is the main contact for this company. He tries very hard to convey a very serious professional image and has his work crew do the same. Our original roof was old and had not been laid correctly. Sean was patient in explaining what the situation was, what the options were, and what it would cost to replace the roof. His estimate was not the lowest but was nowhere near the highest. The work was done promptly and professionally and came with an 8-year warranty. The only problem was on the last day. Sean was out of town and the crew left a bit of a mess behind. I called him when he returned to town. He was very apologetic and finished the clean up. I got the impression that he was going to deliver some stern words to the crew when he saw them. This small clean-up problem is the reason for the only "B" above. When the warranty was in its last year, we had some leakage around two canales after severe winter weather. The crew came out promptly to repair the problem under warranty with no mention of any expense to us. Again, while the warranty was in its last year, we had unusual wind damage to the roof - wind damage is excluded under the warranty. Sean came out to estimate the expense for the damage, decided to do some additional work under the warranty (no charge), and suggested some non-warrantied maintenance (with a charge), after which he would extended the current warranty for another 10 years. We agreed to all three, knowing that he has always honored the warranty. The crew arrived within a few days and all the work was completed in 2 days. The crew was very careful with clean-up, catching tar drips, etc. This is a busy company and the lead time can be fairly long. Sean can seem a bit formal and serious but he's just trying to run his company professionally. The expense listed above includes both the complete re-roof done in 2003 (approx. 2500 sq ft.) and the repairs done in 2011.
Description of Work: In 2003, Mike Lopez LLC replaced our flat built-up roof with a new one. In the winter, 2011, they performed repairs under warranty. In the summer, 2011, they performed repairs that were not under warranty, repairs that were under warranty, and some general roof maintenance. The non-warrantied repairs were from damage was done by a freak high wind event.

(Note that ratings above are an average for two jobs. The first job had some problems, but the second job went very well.) The major re-roofing job went pretty well with a few small problems. While attempting to remove the tar-and-gravel roof, one worker chopped a hole through the roof of our carport. The job supervisor asked how we would want to repair it - with a sheet of plywood over the hole or to replace the decking boards. Since it was just a carport, we said that the plywood would be OK. The entire job took about five days. My husband and I were able to stay at home the first two days of the job. As it seemed to be going well, we went back to our own jobs after that. When talked with Sean Lopez after the third day, he reported that they had found rotting roofing (plywood) over one corner of the house after removing the built-up roof. They had replaced several sheets of plywood. When the job was done, Sean asked for additional money, beyond the bid price, to pay for the extra dump costs for removing the old roof. He said that the dumping fees were higher as there was more roofing that anticipated. I told him that this was not our agreement, but that I was willing to pay for the plywood that had to be replaced, as we did agree. He then sent me a bill for about $1,000, which was about twice the amount that it should have been for two or three sheets. Rather than quibble, we paid the additional cost. However, that certainly put a damper on an otherwise fine job. When we had a small roofing job three years later to extend a closet (56 sq ft), we felt that we needed to stick with the same company so as not to void our roof warranty. Sean came out to see the project and we agreed on a price. While at our home, he also inspected the rest of the roof, noted some areas that needed minor attention, and included that in his price. He was able to send a couple of guys on a Saturday, which really helped with our schedule. They took care of the job quickly and professionally. We plan to do more work on our home in 2009, and we will certainly hire Mike Lopez Roofing again for the job!
Description of Work: Mike Lopez Roofing replaced our built-up (i.e. tar-and-gravel) roof with a polyurethane spray foam roof in 2004. This job entailed removing two built-up roofs and hauling away the roofing material, replacing damaged plywood roofing, spraying the entire roof with polyurethane foam roofing to a depth that added R40 insulation, sealing the parapet and around all exhaust pipes and fans, etc., and covering the foam with gravel for protection. The total roof coverage, including garage, was about 4,000 sq. ft. The bid price accepted was for everything except for replacing plywood roofing. That has a separate (per sq. ft) price. In 2007, they returned to foam a small addition (less than 100 sq. ft.) and tie it into the existing foam roofing.
