John comes from an exceptionally musical family (he is the youngest son of the legendary Rudolf Serkin), where, as he once confessed to me, "everyone played the piano from the earliest possible age -- it is just what we did." He was trained as a classical hornist and succeeded as a musician, playing with notable ensembles but found performance anxiety debilitating, so he stopped performing and turned instead to the craft of coaxing pianos to make exquisite sound. Before retiring to Santa Fe, John Serkin spent much of his career in New York City, tuning pianos for the most illustrious pianists to perform concerts in that city. His skill and intimate knowledge of how pianos are constructed won him considerable renown. He is featured on a video devoted to the art of of piano maintenance. It is easy to recommend him, for there is no one who is better.
Description of Work: I have my baby grand piano serviced several times each year. This includes tuning, of course, but John also makes sure everything else is in top working order, "voicing," for example when necessary.
