I have used Maddox plumbing for 10 years. They have always been very reliable and courteous. However, when things do not go perfectly that is when you can tell the true quality of service. I recently had an evaporative cooler installed. The technician did not install a new roof jack and stand for the new cooler. When I notified Maddox, they responded the next day and said that they would take care of this. They had a new stand and jack built and delivered it to be installed at no additional charge. I highly recommend them.

Strike 1: Maybe I just got the really bad employees, but after a disposal was installed by Maddox, we thought we just had bad drain pipes in this old home, because it just didn't work well. Suddenly, neither did our new dishwasher. Finally, a year later - another plumber with Speedy Plumbing found the issue. Maddox had installed the disposal incorrectly, wrong hoses hooked up to wrong inlet/outlet lines and none of the plugs were removed from the disposal which is required for installation, so of course in addition to the disposal not working correctly, the dishwasher couldn't either because the air gap hose from the dishwasher was incorrectly attached to the disposal and the plug which allows the air gap to work was not removed from the disposal. Maddox is nice on the phone and does send a plumber quickly, but what is that worth if they charge you for a job poorly done, when you have to get another plumber to fix their work and charge you again? Strike 2: During this same time period, before we knew the disposal was installed incorrectly, we also needed our sewer cap clean outs raised above ground. Yep, called Maddox. Two guys came. They "installed" risers /cleanout caps, put soil back around the caps & left. Three days later, thanks to our dogs running around the yard and kicking the top-out caps which fell over immediately, we discovered the caps were simply set on top of the existing open hole in sewer pipes. Not screwed in, not glued, not attached in any way. So when we saw the risers/caps laying sideways on the ground we inspected. Sure enough, sewer line now full of dirt because the caps were just set on top of the old sewer line and buried in 6 inches of dirt. Great Job. We paid $365 for these plumbers to dig 6", take the old WORKING SEALED caps off, and simply lay $20 of plastic risers/caps on top and bury in 6" of dirt. I called and told Maddox what had been done. They sent 2 more to fix it. Charged another $365 for the job that wasn't done the first time. Astounding. Strike 3: Just before we discovered the disposal issue, we needed a hot water heater removed from the house during floor renovations. I specifically said I wanted the water heater flushed upon removal, then flushed again before re-install because it would sit outside for at least a couple of weeks in the hot weather. The same two who had lazily done the original sewer pipe risers came. When I watched them take the water heater outside and drain it, then leave it outside I asked, did you flush it? The lead plumber said "No. We only need to flush it before we put it back." I said I had asked for it to be flushed both when removed, AND before re-installing. He again said "No. We only need to flush it before putting it back. He also said since I had the old metal hoses they would need to install new ones because after the old ones had been bent in several directions to remove the water heater, those old hoses would leak if not replaced. Then they left. Weeks later upon needing it re-installed, same two plumbers came. I watched them stick the dolly under the water heater and cart it inside and begin re-install. There was mud and dried dirt clumped all over the bottom of the water heater. They didn't even try to clean it off. They dropped it onto the new flooring and began twisting and scooting it around the floor, grinding mud and dirt into the new flooring. They also left it sitting lop-sided and tried to put it into place. I stopped them. I told them it is rocking because there are clumps of dirt all over the bottom of the water heater. Of course they knew this because the helper had my dust pan and a rag and was trying to scoop up dirt from the floor before I could catch them. I was understandably upset. I had to make them clean the bottom of the water heater before they scratched & ruined the new flooring. They did not like this! Then, they were hooking it up to the old hoses that they said would leak if re-used. I stopped them. Made them put new hoses on. Then, after having watched the entire process, I asked "Did you flush the water heater before you brought it in the house?" The lead plumber said "No. We flushed it when we took it out." I reminded him that they had NOT flushed it on removal because I watched the entire process and reminded him that HE specifically told me they had NOT flushed it upon removal and that he had stated they only needed to flush it before re-installing it. He again said "No. We flushed it when we took it out". This conversation went three rounds before I gave up because it was clear they had no intention of doing the job correctly. We were charged a hefty fee for this experience. We dealt with black hot water, chunky water, and settlings from the hot water heater for a couple of weeks. We flushed it. When I explained to the person on the other end of the phone at Maddox this horrible experience, I was met with excuses. They were kind enough to give me a $100 discount off a $600+ bill. Gee.

It took way too long, they didn't come when they said they would on several occasions and failed to call the city to check once they'd done their part. This delayed the progress of everything including closing on the house for at least a week and caused my Inspector to have to return twice while we waited, thinking it was due to the city's slowness. Finally I called the city and found that Maddox hadn't even requested that the city perform the check. However, one of their employees was experienced and generous, and I'd hire him again, but of course, that's impossible. As for the company, I'll never call them again. They never apologized for the delays they caused, nor applied the discount that was offered and requested up front, and for this reason, I've been slow in paying. I actually hope they read this, as they need to know how dissatisfied I am, yet when I spoke with them on the phone, there was no simple apology or admission that they'd done anything wrong. They blamed the city. I did call the city back, to make sure, and they checked their records. They keep a detailed log of inspections called in, and they hadn't received one from Maddox. Very frustrating to work with.

Sent to two plumbers to install the faucet and make other connections, which we were charged for both of their time. This was not agreed upon beforehand. They struggled to install the faucet and seemed inexperienced with PEX piping. When completed the reverse osmosis faucet has far less pressure than it used to have. They came back to check it, but then only blamed the unit (which worked perfectly fine before it was disconnected).

We purchased a new refrigerator to be delivered next Thursday. We were told that we would need to be able to turn off the water valve that ran to the refrigerator. Well, after looking in places where one would ordinarily find it, we could not locate it. So we called Maddox Plumbing. We were told that they would try and send someone out once a job was completed. Well, less than an hour after I made the call, the Maddox plumbers arrived. They were courteous and very knowledgeable. It turned out that the valve was inside the wall, behind the refrigerator! What a stupid place to put a shut-off valve!!! Anyway, after they gave us an estimate, we told them to proceed. They went into the wall, removed the valve from behind the wall, and installed a plate with an easy-access shut-off valve right behind the refrigerator. The job was done quickly, efficiently, and under-estimate. I highly recommend Maddox Plumbing, and would not hesitate to use them again if another plumbing need arose.

I called Maddox and asked for Kevin who installed my new furnace last year. He found a bad fuse as well as some wiring from the thermostat that need repair. He had it up and running in no time. I remember calling Snell's Air Conditioning & Heating last year about my furnace and got poor communication from them so I remembered Maddox and called them. Kevin came out and evaluated my old, old furnace and explained how a new furnace could save me money. Lesson learned---when you talk on the phone listen to hear if they really care about your problem--Snell didn't care and Maddox did.

Maddox sent one plumber and he flushed the water heater (I had just done it 6 months previously) and put a bigger "faucet" on it to flush it faster next time (still no hot water on both ends of the house). Then he said I needed new elements in the electric water heater. Maybe so, so I let him replace the elements (still no hot water on both ends of the house). Then he put a flexible red hose and a mini tank on top of the water heater. I don't know what any of that was suppose to do and still don't (but still no hot water on both ends of the house). Then he checked my holding tank (I have a well) and the pressure switch and said the diaphragm in the tank wasn't working right and this would cost some money to replace the tank and switch. I believed him (although I knew this "fix" would not bring me hot water to both ends of the house). It might give me better water pressure, but not more hot water and certainly not hot water on both ends of the house. So off he goes to find a tank. A few hours later he and a technician came back and replaced the tank and switch (still no hot water on both ends of the house). Then he told me, if I replaced all my electronic faucets, I'd get more pressure. I like my electronic faucets and...what does that have to do with getting hot water on both ends of my house? I asked for the costs thus far and I started asking the company online for a bill; I was told by the guys it would be around $1800. I should have quit while I was ahead??? Anyway, a week or so later, Maddox sent a different plumber and a technician. (The first group was out of ideas...I said it was a puzzle and to send someone who could solve a puzzle...I guess they didn't believe me.) This plumber told me he'd have to cut holes in the walls on the north end to see what had been done when the house was built and to test the system. The first hole...wrong wall/no pipes. The second and third holes gained them access to the shower pipes and to one sink in one bedroom. They tested the system and told me the line was kinked and that they'd have to cut holes in the ceilings in five rooms to install a new line. My ceilings are 11-15 feet tall and each room is painted/accented with several different colors and I could just envision having to repaint these rooms to match texture/paint/accents, so I declined. Anyway, that was going to run another $2000 (plus the cost to repair all the holes/texture/paint/accent/etc.) and the bill was already at somewhere around $1800 before these two guys came. They looked at re-routing the line outside, but my property is solid rock/concrete/patios/ponds/etc., so that wasn't going to work. How about change out the faucets to regular ones and you'll get more pressure? I told them that before I did that I'd contact Delta and have them send me new electronic ones since I have a lifetime warranty. I asked about re-routing the line (although the risk of it freezing is very real where I live) over the roof. I was told that wasn't a good idea and they left. They did give me the number of a guy who could fix the holes in my walls. I called that guy, set up an appointment, but the guy never showed. Then I called Delta, the only good thing that happened during this exercise; they sent me five new electronic faucets! I love Delta and I love my new touch electronic faucets, and yes, I have more pressure...but still no hot water on both ends of the house! I did not hire Maddox to replace my faucets. I hired a handyman I found through another service (not Angie's) to take out the old faucets and to install the new and to fix my walls. That was only $475; I'd hire him again. Then someone called me from Maddox (I think it was the owner) and asked me if the problem had been fixed. NO. Then he asked me if I'd been keeping track of the hours, and I should have known better, I told him, "no". Right after I told him no, I knew I was in for a big surprise on the bill. Then he told me they could run a line over the roof and it'd be about $1800, maybe more, maybe less. I told him I was told by his guys that that was a dumb idea. I told him I was looking at installing under-the-sink heaters and he told me that was a dumb idea (he really said it wasn't a good idea...these units require too much maintenance). And that's where we left it. The bill was finally sent to me by e-mail after this conversation...$2862.25! I paid it and went in to shock. Since this time, whenever the holding tank fills, I turn off a faucet, flush the toilet, etc., the pipes bang in my walls. I would have called Maddox to fix it, which they should have done under warranty, but bottom line, I don't want them tinkering with my plumbing. I've also hired another plumber to check out my pump/holding tank in my wastewater treatment system (separate issue). When he comes back to install new faucets on the outside of my house for my irrigation system, I'll have him adjust the pressure switch on the holding tank; that is probably all that is needed to stop the pipes from banging. I just don't want Maddox to do it; I can't afford Maddox! And then, I may have him suggest a solution to my hot water problem. I also want him to tell me what Maddox did, to include the red tubing and the up-side-down tank on my water heater. I also want to be sure my passive solar system is still hooked up to the water heater. I think it was unhooked for the up-side-down tank??? The guys Maddox sent were friendly, nice guys and I believe they are decent plumbers. So, in a way, I hate having to submit this review, but the truth is, I got charged a heck of a lot of money for stuff I may or may not have needed, and most importantly, my problem, no hot water on both sides of the house, is still not fixed.
Description of Work: I chose Maddox based on the reviews on Angie's List. When I built my home 10 years ago, I fired the first plumber because he didn't do anything we'd discussed concerning my water/wastewater systems. So I wasn't going to use that plumber again, and yes, they're still around. Then I hired another plumber to pick up the pieces and I used that plumber up until that company went out of business (the owner died). Since then, I've had plumbers/handymen look at my system, and to date, to include this time, no one's fixed it. Bottom line, I don't have hot water on both ends of the house. Supposedly, the first plumber I had kinked the re-circulating line in the slab (now you know part of the reason I fired that company and I still think the kink was on purpose), so it's either hot water on the north end or south end, but not both. When I contacted Maddox, I told them I needed somebody who really knew his/her plumbing. This was not an easy problem to fix, and that so far, all the plumbers/handymen I've hired have failed. Send someone who knows what they're doing and can figure out a puzzle...

Response from Maddox Plumbing Inc.
It was unfortunate that Maddox Plumbing did not solve the original issue of not getting hot water to both ends of the house at once. The best solution to the problem would have been to run a new water line outside, however the landscaping and area surrounding the house would have had to be disturbed and this was not a desired option for the member. The other possible solution of running a new line above would have caused damage to the member’s custom ceilings. This option was also declined. The improvements, repairs, and services the technicians provided were efforts to solve the original hot water issue through methods other than running a new line. The attempts to improve the water pressure and water heating system were intended to help hot water reach both ends of the house using only the existing lines. We apologize if there was any misunderstanding, miscommunication, or unfairness in pricing and would most certainly like to look into, and discuss the charges to make everything fair!

Maddox Plumbing was recommended to me. Lee and John were on time and were excellent in their service. My fireplace wouldn't start and it was not electrical since that was checked. The guys did call another co-worker who has worked with this brand fireplace and within minutes it was working. This to me was very impressive that they didn't try to fix something without asking for another opinion. I also, asked about when my tankless water heater needed cleaning and they told me in a year or two since I use a water softer. Lee and John didn't try to upsell me any service that I didn't need now. I have already call two of my neighbors to let them know about Maddox Plumbing.
