I was not too alarmed at this because the work was not that complicated. I did become concerned when the older son asked me if I had a power drill because they "forgot to bring" theirs. They also forgot their contractor's license to get a discount on the toilet and other parts we needed from Home Depot. The younger one started work on the gate and sawed off enough of the bottom that a good sized cougar could have slipped thru there. I had to explain to him about the stray cats and he put a plank over it and half-fixed the gate latch. At Home Depot I had already selected a toilet and the vinyl and they gave me an additional $10 on the toilet because we got no discount w/o the contractor's license. The older son took out the old toilet and put in the new one but it wasn't until they left that I checked it and realized it was not sitting level on the floor - it actually rocked a bit - which, over time, would have broken the wax seal. They put in the new vinyl first but refused to caulk along the walls which I requested since the plumbing here is very bad. Because they had few power tools with them and probably a lack of experience - certainly a lack of interest - they were here about 5-6 hours and didn't tell me they were leaving until they had their stuff back in the truck and were ready to go. After they left, I discovered some of the problems and called the cell # on the biz card and left a voice mail message. I got no response. Whenever I could reach Con, he would always say he was just about to call me but had to go and would call me the next day - which never happened. I probably left a dozen messages and never got a call back. ALL of their many ads state "WE GUARANTEE OUR WORK!!!" but when you have only 2 cell phone numbers and no address, it is VERY easy for them to ignore you completely. I think the sons felt their father had underbid this job and became more and more frustrated as the day wore on. He had said they had a long ride back home to the Belen area (south of here) but the person I spoke to at the Quik Quarter - and another ad I found for them in an online directory - showed them to be in the Moriarity area east of here. I actually drove out there to confirm the address but the street had no buildings on it - very rural area - and the locals in a nearby bar had never heard of them or any such contracting business in the area. I would strongly recommend anyone having any contracting or even repair work done to pay at most only half up front and make sure you have enough contact info, including a valid address (now I ask to see their biz license and copy the address) so that you willl have some recourse if things go badly as they did for me. With no address, I can't even file a complaint with the BBB or anyone else regarding this fiasco. Eventually, I had to hire someone else to seat the toilet properly and do some caulking and fix the gate - he was very sympathetic to my situation and gave me a very reasonable price and he really knew what he was doing. Spanish was his first language but he understood what needed to be done. Now I am very careful about selecting contractors for anything and I always get contact info from an official document. I hope nothing like this happens to anyone out there - a big waste of time and money.
Description of Work: RE: Sure Value Construction, Sure Value Painting, Sure Value Roofing, Sure Value Mobile Home Repairs - BEWARE!! Phone numbers: 505 459-1477 and 505 489-4233 - no other contact information is given or available. The owner, Con Jackson, who operates many contracting/repair businesses under the Sure Value name in the Albuquerque, NM area, came by to give me an estimate. I saw one of his many ads in our local Quik Quarter magazine but after the fiasco, they refused to give me any contact info on him so I could take action. He looked at the work I needed done - nothing advanced, new toilet, vinyl put down in BA RM, fix latch on gate to keep stray cats out, and he would pay $90 toward the cost of the new toilet. He insisted that I look at a binder he had in his truck with photos of many of the larger projects he had done. We agreed on the price and he said he would be back that Saturday morning at 9am. He did show up on Saturday morning - almost 2 hours late and dropped off his two not-very-skilled sons (about 19 and 22) who would be doing the work since he had to give someone else an estimate on a larger job. I foolishly paid him in advance and he gave me a full page receipt with the tasks listed but no company name or contact info on it. He had given me his biz card but all that had was two cell phone numbers and no address. I think this is becoming an easy way to avoid customer complaints.
