On May 7, 2012 I took my HP laptop to this company because I had been having problems with it not shutting down properly and was receiving error messages and BSD (blue screen of death) errors. I had also been having problems with excessively slow start ups. I was told it would be 5 to 10 days for the diagnostics and work. On May 15, 2012 I received a call that they wanted to talk about my computer more. I went to the store and spoke with the technician. He stated he could not replicate any shut down problems. He asked how I had the computer setup at home. I explained I had two external drives hooked up to the system. He told me to unplug the extra drives when I started up the computer to solve the start up problems. I found this odd because I had the drives hooked up for a long time and only recently had started have problems with the start up of the computer. The technician also discussed changing my Anti-Virus software from the Norton program I already had to a new program, Bit Defender. Iagreed to the change and their Tune-up package. On May 19, 2012 I called at about 3 PM ( an hour before closing) to check on my computer and was told that they had received several "Priority projects" and that my computer wouldn't be ready until May 21, 2012. I called May 21, 2012 at about 4 PM (an hour before closing) and spoke with the Service Manager. He stated that the computer was not ready. He further gave a lot of excuses about editing the registry line by line. He said it would be ready at 10 AM the nest morning. When I arrived to pick up my computer I was treated very coldly by the staff. I picked up the computer and left. The first thing I noted upon opening the laptop was numerous sticky/grimey fingerprints and smudges on the display screen. I looked at the documentation for the "repair" and noted that the technician had " Stressed system for two hours and system did not shut down." He obviously did not understand the problem was that when I wanted to shut down the computer it would not even though His notes indicated as the problem " System will not always shut down or boot correctly." When I returned home I found I still had startup problems, there was no change in performance (even with their "Tune- Up" ), and I still had the shut down problem. I was without my laptop for sixteen (16) days only to have the same problems. I would suggest going almost anywhere else for computer repair.

AWFUL!!! I have written GURU STU several eMails over this long elapsed time, HOWEVER, have HAD NO response to my querys. I will never even call them as requested below. They provided poor service at the time of Sale. I did not need further aggrevation or expense from them. I only returned for service in 2009 because the computer had failed---DID NOT WORK!!! Finally getting a working computer was finally done ONE MONTH from purchase. I would not buy the simplest of computer gear from Sandia Computers.
Description of Work: I was "SOLD" on buying a computer from Sandia in December of 2008 by GURU STU. I am writing this Review to clarify my original complaint. Sandia took ONE MONTH to deliver the computer to me fully operating. It took them ONE MONTH to correctly load my data on to the new computer. I did not have the "new" operating computer for one month from the date of purchase. I lost data from their transfer of my files. The "new" computer hard disk failed. I have NEVER had a hard disk fail in 30 years of PC ownership and use. The computer has ALWAYS been unstable, and prone to needing software fixes. Was this Sandia's problem or "build" of my computer? I don't know --- BUT, my mail order DELL, bought at the same time, has NEVER given me the problems the Sandia computer has. Other mail order, or BIG BOX computer purchases by me have NOT caused me the anguish, or expense, that the Sandia Computer has. Sandia Computers via GURU STU TV Ads acclaims fast friendly Mom & Pop service. My experience of the first few months of owning this computer was fully frustrating. ANY service requested was answered with a reques for a significant up-front charge. I never bit on this pitch again. I would NEVER buy anything from Sandia Computers again. A friend also related a similar experience with GURE STU.

Description of Work: My wife's laptop kept turning itself off. She brought it in and they looked at it and got it running . No charge. They advised that it may be temporary and we should bring it in for repair if it failed again. It failed again in about a week and a half and we brought it back. After about a week of work we were told that it was a motherboard failure and the computer was not worth fixing. We paid $80 for the diagnostic work. That seems fair. We consulted other folks who opined that the diagnosis was wrong--the symptom didn't match the diagnosis. We brought the unit back. The owner told us they would do more repair work and an OS upgrade to windows7. He quoted us a "discounted" price of $285 for this work He said this may or may not remedy the situation and that, if the unit failed again, we could take the cost off of a $1000 laptop he would sell us. We agreed to this, largely because the computer had great sentimental value to my wife. The " repair " was done and the unit failed the night we brought it home. We were charged $139 for the upgrade and $150 for the tune up. I do need to add that when the unit was returned to us after the diagnostic there was a loose screw and the screen was loose and dirty. When we got the unit back the final time the screen was fixed but there was a missing screw. It seems what happened was we were sold a "tune up" for their fee of $150. (I had taken a brochure describing their tune up and noticed that I would be capable of doing much of it myself.) We were also sold a Windows 7 upgrade although no knowledgeable people we consulted could understand the connection between the problem and the original OS Windows XP. The owner might have said something about OS incompatibility. Nonsense. The laptop was nearly 4 years old and worked perfectly with its original OS. We feel we were taken advantage of. The offer of a trade in felt like the work of a shady used car salesman. We felt we were sold a fix that was likely to fail. We were given a wrong diagnosis at first and the ultimate fix had no relationship to any reasonable diagnosis. This was a very painful frustrating and expensive experience and we would never consider stepping foot in Sandia Computers again.

a wasted trip of petro, even in a prius
Description of Work: I called this place because i had a laptop that was freezing up on me, same old problem, because I had never had a computer repaired before, I asked how much to check it out, and the guy said "oh bring it on by, we'll look at it for no charge".I drove from RR to Wyoming. These 2 young dudes said it was actually $75 to look at a laptop. Then looked at me like I was stupid (or middle aged which equates to stupid). When I told them someone told me it was no charge, they just continued looking at me like I was stupid. Oh well, it drove me to start thinking of getting an apple instead of buying a new computer every year anyway. Only this store won't be working, selling or showing me ANYTHING.

I think we were overcharged. Their advertisement claims that they are a "mom and pop, hand holding" type business, but they sure didn't hold our hands after they got out money. The guy I talked to on the phone while trying to access our old information didn't give me much detail on how to retrieve it. Needless to say, I've lost everything we had on file.
Description of Work: Our computer kept kicking us off and even after rebooting we could not do anything. It turned out to be a virus. They removed the virus and cleaned everything up. They took the old data and moved all to a folder on the desktop. The problem is, we ended up loosing everything we had because we don't know how to access the old information. We called them and asked them how to get it back and their answer was to click on the old folder and then copy and paste everything to a new folder. Well, I started off with pictures and it copied all kinds of clip art that I had never even seen. So, we pretty much lost everything we had up to that point and had to start fresh.

Normal service turnaround at this time was 13 days, but they worked with me to get this done quickly. After the manufacturer (FINALLY) delivered the hard drive, they had everything completely restored within a couple of hours. I was charged for two hours of labor, which I didn't mind at all.
Description of Work: My hard drive was going bad, and was to be replaced by the manufacturer. Sandia Computers bent over backwards to image my hard drive so that I would have a backup.
