Rapid MVD

I went to Rapid MVD at the Paseo del Norte/San Pedro location to get my new motorcycle titled and licensed. This process at Rapid MVD was done easily and quickly and I have no complaints with how the service was rendered. My complaint is with how the company seems to "scam" customers into paying an additional 2% on their service fees. This is how the scam operates: Once all the transactions are finished and the bill is totaled it becomes time to pay for the service, title process, and license. The gentleman behind the counter told me that he could take a debit card or a credit card for the services, but not a personal check. I am also told at that time if I use my CREDIT CARD, I will be charged an additional 2% service fee to cover the cost of the transaction with the credit card company. Naturally, I do not want to pay an additional fee on my transaction so I gave the guy my debit card. He swipes it and immediately tells me that it was refused. So, I told him to run my debit card as a CREDIT CARD (it is backed by VISA) and the same results are given. This is impossible because I have plenty of money in my account to cover the cost of the fees and transactions. I asked my wife to use her debit card which is from a different financial institution and wouldn't you know it, it is also refused. Ditto on asking to run it as a credit card. Four swipes, four refusals. Finally I gave the gent my VISA card and it is accepted after a delay of about 30 seconds along with an additional 2% fee. Here is what I feel is happening during the debit card swipe-I noticed that immediately after running the card thru the machine the guy pushes a button and immediately announces that the card is refused, however, he does NOT push that button when the VISA card is swiped. I truly believe that customers are being scammed out of an additional fee just by the slight of hand! I mention this because in March of 2011, I stopped at the second location for Rapid MVD (Alameda Ave & Hwy 528) to register and license a Jeep vehicle and the EXACT SAME THING happened as I have described above! Both our debit cards were refused regardless of how they were swiped (credit or debit.) To make this and even more obvious scam; my wife and I both witnessed a man in front of us at the Alameda office get his debit card refused-the only difference being that he walked away in anger from the counter refusing to pay an additional 2% fee on his transaction. Something very, very fishy is going on with this company and their practices!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I may also report this incident to the Department of Motor Vehicles for New Mexico and the Attorney General's office. I think they would like to look into this a bit.
