Ortega Tile

The experience was very difficult because both Juan Ortega and his son were unprofessional. Juan came out to give a quote and gave a price to do "everything" that we wanted. Once we asked for the quote in writing, the story changed. Only once we threatened to work with someone else, did he honor the original in person quote. They started the work on the day they said but were late showing up every single day. The son was way too casual and talked way too much. The shower pan, prep, and tile work were well done but the son made some shortcuts that the father had to correct. By the end of the experience they were rude to us and when we asked for the tile scraps they refused to give them to us and insulted us. Because the work was well done and the price good we considered them for the downstairs tub shower. This second experience however was very negative. We agreed on a time to meet at my house for a firm quote that was convenient for Juan but not necessarily convenient for me. After he was a half-hour late I texted him and he said he would come 1.5 hours late. He still didn't show and when I contacted him again angry because he was so late, he told me to find someone who worked on my schedule. I'll be better off taking my business elsewhere or doing it myself. Both Juan and his son are very difficult to work with.

The 3 tilers of the Ortega Tile team arrived promptly and helped me with moving the furniture out the work area. They did a great job of covering other furniture to prevent dust collection. They quickly removed the old carpet, old tile, and the base boards. They hauled away the old carpet, tile and associated debris. Next, they cleaned and prepared the concrete floor and laid out the tile pattern to ensure it was what we wanted. It took a about 3 days to complete the tile installation. After the installation, I checked the tile and found some tiles that were not sufficiently flush and therefore had up lifted edges. I contacted Mr. Juan Ortega, owner, and he came back and fixed the problem tiles. Several weeks later, I noticed that, in the kitchen, the wall texture had been removed in the vicinity of the base boards -- it is unclear why they had to scrape/remove the wall. In any case, the removal of the wall texture left the sheet rock exposed in a couple of spots. In addition, I found a couple of tiles along the base boards that should have been cut wider so that the edge would have been under the base board. Bottom-line -- Ortega Tile did a good job, although some of the workmanship could have been better. In retrospect, I should have: (1) been more explicit on what I considered important and (2) done a closer inspection of the work before I accepted it.
