Excellent. Nigel and his crew were wonderful. Nigel came over to meet us and to see what we had in mind. He had some great ideas and walk us through them. There was a little bit of trust in this process. We are both engineers and are used to having things spelled out very clearly. Nigel is more of an artist and provided us with rough drawings and it made us a little nervous but my husband and I knew that we weren't artists so we trusted all the reviews that we had read. A month or so before the work started he met us to look at the hardscape options. We were doing xeriscaping. A week or so before he started he stopped by and reviewed the plans. Nigel's business plan is to only have one job that he and his team are working on, so they showed up everyday until it was complete. It was nice not having them jump all around to different jobs. His team is great. Max is the lead that is on-site pretty much the entire time. The time they spent and the detail that they included in design far exceeded my expectations. They put in a nice walkway with steps (we have quite the hill) and lights both in the steps and next to the steps on a sensor They used several different colors of rock and sizes. We also had a retaining wall they installed, the brick they used for the walkway and the wall complimented each other. the plants that he and I chose worked beautifully in his design. He even put some fragrant flowers next to a couple of windows. He was so detailed. The care that they put into laying rock was impressive. I would have just dumped it and raked it around. No, they were on their hands and knees place many of the rocks so they sat just right. It really made a difference. Oh, one other thing, we had left a hedge and a couple of bushes on the side of the house. I came home one day and they were all trimmed and looking better than they had in years! We are considering having them work on the patio in the backyard, but winter's coming so we might do that in the spring.

First of all, I am negligent at not posting this review sooner. But I cannot possibly sing enough praises for these guys. I wanted something different as far as the shape of a back patio - something curved and creative to complement the squareness of my house - but on a budget. After several failed attempts to receive any creative ideas from other companies, I called Nigel (after reading a review on AL). Best thing I could have done! He worked with me on developing a great design and never made me feel 'less' because I had a budget. Yes, initially the price for services seemed high, however these guys are true craftsmen and do not cut corners. After the job was complete, I now think I received a tremendous bargain. They take tremendous pride in their work and do not nickel and dime you for every change. They even took care of a few things on my property that were not part of the bid! They were punctual, extremely polite, very cognizant of my dogs and each day when they were done, the job site was very neat. I loved when the job was done, but was sorry to see them go. If you want a truly personalized, enjoyable, professional landscape experience, PLEASE call Nigel at Landmark.

Nigel and his crew were amazing to work with. They worked hard through the extreme heat and always cleaned up at the end of each day. They did a great job with every aspect of our design. We went from a back yard that was hot and never used to a beautiful and usable space. The workers were THE best and needed no input from me-but they let me ooh and aah every day!
Description of Work: Grass and sidewalks were removed. New paver patio, sidewalks, and a shade structure was built and irrigation was installed/repaired and planting was done. My whole garden, the new and the old, was mulched. The new garden was integrated with the old and the whole yard looks great.

This company was a PLEASURE to work with. The owner met with me and discussed what I was interested in. He discussed ideas. He was very helpful. But the crew, I can't say enough about them They were courteous, cleaned up everyday, asked if I was happy on a daily basis, and the craftsmanship was outstanding. I can't thank them enough for all the work they did. Thank you Nigel, Max and crew! I will not recommend any other landscaping company!!

Nigel the owner was absolutely the best to work with. Took our ideas and expounded on them into a beautiful landscaped backyard! His crew never and I mean never stopped working! Landmark Landscape was by far the most professional group of contractors we've ever worked with. The crew was on time and went above and beyond in doing the job we asked for. At the end of each day, we couldn't even tell they'd been there because everything was clean and put away so that our home life wasn't interrupted. This was a month-long project, so we really appreciated their consideration and attention. We asked Nigel Nowlin from Landmark to design and construct a patio that offered both an intimate setting, but also the expansiveness to entertain large groups of people. He did this in a seamless manner by designing an artistic and flowing patio surrounded by beautiful plants, trees and shrubs and splashes of colorful rock that complimented the pavers we picked out. One end of the patio offers a water feature that's both beautiful and peaceful. The other end offers a fire pit that provides both warmth and coziness to a large yard. Really, the finished product is a piece of art that touches on all the senses. We highly recommend Landmark Landscapes before you trust any one else with your home. The quality, professionalism and artistry is unrivaled.

All I can say is WOW! My backyard looks like a Model Home! I am so pleased. Landmark not only produced an excellent finished product but made it a painless process. They were polite and considerate, never blocked in my vehicles with theirs or with stocked materials. Each day they completely cleaned up and not only their work but they went above and beyond. They raked up any fallen leaves and swept my porch clean. Every thing they did, they did a little bit extra. Awesome job Landmark!!
Description of Work: Backyard. Installation of drip system and patio
True Craftsmen! Nigel Nowlin and his two foremen had superb ideas and showed great depth in knowledge + installation skill. Our 18 X 28 ft patio of pavers looks fabulous along with the pathway and paved edging to it. They also designed and installed a great drainage system to make sure there is no backyard flooding (we have a sloping lawn which meets the patio, and together could flood the backdoor without proper drainage). To top it off, they put in many extras without charge or fuss. For example, I came home from work to find that they used the paver leftovers to give me a concrete-set 4 X 6 ft. pad on which to park the garbage and recycle bins! Also, to pick the right tree, Nigel met us at the nursery for a walk around to discuss tree options/traits and hand pick the exact tree that would appear the next day in our front yard. And they did the entire job in 16 consecutive days without hardly taking time to catch their breath. These are the guys to have when you want the job done creatively, and right.

We were sick of our back yard and didn't have a clue what to do with it. Our first thought was to extend our patio, since we love to entertain. I called Landmark Landscapes and the owner, Nigel, answered. I told him we want to extend our patio and his response was an immediate, "We can do that!" We set up an appointment. Nigel showed us his vision. What we loved about his idea was the patio wouldn't be straight across in a square or rectangle, but had many curves and levels, giving it much character. The design complimented the three levels we already had. Nigel drew the design on a sheet of paper and didn't charge us for it. Most contractors do charge for their design. The day we expected the landscapers it snowed, but it didn't stop them from working. They started prepping, by removing the grass and other objects i.e. rocks etc. which would be in the way. The next day they leveled, laid the under layers of gravel and sand then came the pavers and there were a lot of them. They measured them with a level. What I loved about this company is they worked straight through from start to finish. It took them a week. Landmark Landscapes employees work during the winter months and that also fit in with our plan, having it ready for Spring. We were more than happy with the four man crew. We never seen them take a break. They buzzed around like robots and were very particular in making sure everything was done to perfection. Max, the foreman, didn't need to tell the other men what to do next. They automatically saw what needed to be done and did it. All the men were polite and friendly. We enjoyed getting to know such a dedicated group of people who do quality work. We'd certainly use them again. Try them you'll love them!

They were on the job, on time, every day. The worksite was so clean at the end of the day that it looked better than when they started each morning. When the project was completed the crew had everything so clean, and furniture replaced so nicel,y we could have entertained that night. There were some great detail touches put on the trim around an existing walkways that required pretty precise cuts and really helped pull it all together. They even patched a small driveway area I was concerned about. Nigel is very artistic and I feel he could design and execute almost anything you could think of. Max and the crew were organized, professional and QUIET. I am really happy we found them and plan to call them again for future projects.

He did a good job but I just wouldn't hire him again. The work went well and the planning was nice but he wouldn't replace because he said I didn't water enough and the reason I didn't water enough is because we have long restriction here in the Mexico. We can't water. I was disappointed. Water is expensive and you just can't go around, pour it out all the time.

Dear Client- thank you for your business. However- we cannot be held responsible for plant life if they are not watered. I don't think it is fair to expect that a business would replace plants that are not watered. Also, please check the restrictions- to my knowledge there are no restrictions on hand watering thirsty plants that need a drink. Kind regards- Nigel

I got bids from three different landscapers . I told all of them that my budget was $20k and the first two came in at >$30k. Nigel's gave me a bid around $20k and an additional bid $24k for additional work. The other contractors came to my house, talked with me and then gave me a design about a week later. Nigel doesn't work like that. He came to my house, talked with me and then spent about 30-45 minutes coming up with a hand sketched design. Which he then reviewed with me. I immediately liked the design but needed some time to think about. Nigel sent me some addresses of other properties that he had worked on, so I visited them. I wasn't that impressed. We later got together and he took me to some additional projects he had worked on and I really liked what he did. I accepted Nigel's bid. I expected that Nigel would create a new more detailed design but he doesn't work like that. He prefers to get a design 90% correct and then work out the details as we go. This got alarm bells going off in my head since I have heard of contractors underbidding projects and then making up the difference as progressed. Making you overpay for each change. Nigel assured me that he doesn't do that and I felt good about how things worked out. About a week before the project started Nigel came out and drew lines with paint in my yard to give me an idea of how things would look. This gave me a chance to better imagine how things would go and I appreciated it. Once the work started we would meet each morning (sometimes with his crew, sometimes without) to review what they did the day before, talk about what they were going to do and what was coming up. Several times Nigel's crew (which is awesome btw) would stage things for me so that I could see what things would look like and make changes before they were cemented in place. In two particular cases, I made changes that I think improved the landscape and the crew took things in stride. No complaints and no additional fees. The crew worked for about 2 1/2 weeks and it was great. They clean up at the end of each day and they work hard throughout the day. I love how things turned out. Nigel was great listening to me, implementing my (and his) ideas, and making good suggestions when I didn't know how I wanted to proceed. I would totally recommend him to others. Two tips: 1) Nigel loves to use paint to draw the lines and give you an idea of how things are going to work. Be careful about those lines, his crew is super efficient and if there is a bulge or a dip, make sure that you tell them your opinion of it. Some of the places I visited had a few weird bumps in lines and I think the crew just followed the paint because they weren't told otherwise. I made sure that they knew that I wanted smooth lines and I had no problem. 2) Before I started the project, I asked Nigel how we resolved differences since we didn't have a official design for the project, just a hand sketched outline. He said that as long as the work wasn't substantially different from the design, he usually just did the work. For the most part, I found that this was true. But there was a couple of things that I asked them to do (not big things) that ended up costing more than Nigel expected. This came up when we were settling the bill and he added a couple of hundred dollars for it. It wasn't exorbitant and I think I certainly got my money's worth but I wished he had pointed out what was going things were going to cost me extra. BTW they did lots of additional things that they didn't charge me for. I think I came out ahead.
Description of Work: Removed landscaping attempt from previous owner, worked with me to design landscape, leveled yard, added hardscape (retaining walls, patio, rock), added irrigation, added plants.

Nowlin Landscaping isn't cheap. If you're looking for the low bid, and are OK with a cookie cutter approach, this probably isn't the company for you. If you pick Nowlin, what do you get for your money? From my experience, you get terrific, personalized customer service; a pleasing combination of artistic flair and functionality; conscientious, diligent, and meticulous workers who've been with the company for at least a few years; and a product that you should enjoy for a long time. We like our home but our patio courtyard suffered from neglect. We also realized after a few epic downpours in the past decade that the drainage in and around the courtyard area was less than ideal. It was time to embark on a home improvement mission. Nigel Nowlin, the owner, came by for an initial appointment. He carefully listened to our concerns and general impressions of what we wanted. He took this information and outlined some ideas. The ideas made sense and fit the situation. I was particularly concerned about the drainage. Nigel outlined a plan to use a shallow trench lined with cobbles to divert water away from the house and into a small retention pond. We ended up with an aesthetically pleasing design that was also quite practical and functional. Once we decided what we wanted, Nigel brought his foremen, Max and Mark, over to do a walkthrough of the project. This helped get all of us on the same page. The crew of four men arrived on time every day. I was impressed how they attended to the little details. For example, they were very careful to make sure the installed pavers sloped correctly to carry water off the patio. The drainage swale was similarly constructed with great attention paid to ensuring a continuous slope and drainage across its length. As noted by other reviewers, Nigel throws in some extras at no charge. For example, Max and the crew tidied up the existing landscaping in the front yard, saving me several hours of work. Nigel took a couple hours out of his schedule to help me pick out a tree that would help serve as a windbreak for the courtyard. Every day, the crew left the work area clean and free of typical construction "junk". Max was great at explaining the progress of the project, and made every effort to accommodate "tweaks" to the project. Nigel periodically came by to check on the work and made sure everything was going as planned. I could go on, but I think you get the idea. My family and I are thrilled with our new courtyard! Great contractor, highly recommended.
Description of Work: The major items included: cleared weeds and unwanted vegetation from courtyard; prepped and compacted soil; dug drainage trench in courtyard, tunneled under courtyard wall and dug small stormwater retention pond on other side of wall; installed Belgard pavers over existing patio concrete and extended patio several feet on open sides; custom fit pavers to accommodate courtyard gate; replaced existing metal landscape edging with Belgard pavers; installed landscape fabric; placed cobbles in trench/retention pond drainage structure; placed gravel in middle part of courtyard; placed pecan shell mulch around existing courtyard landscaping; planted Chinese Pistache for windbreak outside courtyard wall; replaced rosemary plant that needed to be removed for drainage structure; and installed large flagstones as bridges over drainage structure and as stepping stones from patio to rest of back yard.

Max and crew were always on time. They completed the job 2 days early while offering additional minor work on the fly because "it will look better". They were very friendly, always cleaned up (in fact they cleaned messes they didn't make!). They were so committed to a quality job that a few days they even stayed longer because it would get them to a better stopping point for the day. I have had lots of work done over the years, and this is the best crew I've ever worked with. I wish I could upgrade my rating to A+.
Description of Work: Nigel bid the job and designed the landscaping. Max and his crew did the work. We had the full property regraded, new liner, new gravel, a wall system for the vines to grow on, an irrigation system with timer, and 2 patches of pavers by the curb.

Dear Client, Thank you for your review. I enjoyed our meetings and really like how the project came out. Job was professional from start to finish. All pavers were installed with base course and base sand. Edges were mortared in place and job site was kept extremely clean and organized. End of workday cleanup was amazing. Access was maintained for deliveries and to client's business office. Where new construction abutted existing areas great care was taken in matching, cleaning and going the extra step to make it look good. The crew's attention to detail was amazing. Their willingness to listen and provide suggestions was constant and greatly appreciated. We never felt we were interfering in any way but were on the same team. They were respectful to both people and property. Their demeanor while working on our property was superior to any company we have had doing work on our house. Nigel and Max went above and beyond to make us happy. The end result exceeded our hopes and expectations. We have no qualms working with them again and hope to work with them again. We would highly recommend Nowlin Superior Landscapes.

We had large junipers and evergreen trees that had become too large (and dead inside) to prune, so we had them removed and started out fresh. We did want to keep the grass that had not died off due to the drought, and maintain the health of our 60 + year old mulberry tree. I had a landscape architect draw up a plan, but it had all square corners. Nigel came in April and immediately sat down and sketched out just what I wanted. He wasn't able to start the work until the end of July, but he assured me it would be worth the wait. It was. He also told me upfront that he wasn't cheap, and it wasn't, but the appearance of the yard exceeds our expectations. Neighbors and strangers stop to look at it and compliment the work. His crew, especially his foreman Max, are perfectionists. We've had some issues with the irrigation system, but he and his workers return to fix them.

Thank you for your kind review. I really enjoyed watching your back yard transform from barren to amazing. I loved the choice of wall color and pavers. I hope you enjoy your new yard for years to come. -Nigel
It was an absolute delight. Every day the clean up looked like nobody had been there, but every day some beautiful new feature emerged. My home looks inviting from the front, back and sides now. I have a big smile every time I enter my driveway because I see the welcoming planting, seating and lighting, and appreciate the watersaving plants. I was taken by surprise when I saw additional touches like extra plantings peeking up from the multicolored gravel, extra decorative bump-outs from the meditation path and the extra attention paid to my street-side view....all of this was done at no extra fee. I am surprised and delighted and thrilled with how my yard looks. Thank you Nigel and crew!
Description of Work: Remove grass, xeriscape large 1/2 acre back yard, create path, remove weeds, relocate and rebuild herb garden, remove dead honeysuckle along fence and replace with climbing roses, create service yard and access for service vehicles, xeriscape large front yard, remove rocks and dead plants, add fountain, build front courtyard seating, create design elements around evergreens, replace dead tree

Nowlin was paid $300 to do landscape design and drawings for submittal to ABQ Landmarks architect. Nowlin was unable to do appropriate drawings to scale for submission. Owner had to take design and translate into scaled drawing for submittal. Nowlin refused to rebate any of the cost paid for the incomplete drawings. Nowlin did not bring in appropriate equipment to do grade work in a timely manner. Construction of retaining wall was not straight or level. Nowlin was unable to professionally measurements and guage grading and drainage. Because the work needed to be coordinated with the construction of a new porch, Nowlin needed to do soil removal and preliminary grading before contractor could build porch. Contractor had to do additional grading that Nowlin would not do to build porch. Nowlin was paid in full for work at completion of preliminary grade work and before retaining wall was completed. At this time the quality of the work on the wall and the issue of drainage was raised, but Nowlin did not address either issues. Owner should have held back a % of the fee at this time. Upon conpletion of porch Nowlin was asked to finish work he was paid in full for. He failed to return to the job and stated that he had completed all the work he was contracted for and would not address any of the issues - stating he put in more time on the job than he had esatimated it would take. I'm sorry if he under estimated the job. He was fired and a different contractor was brought on. The new contractor raised many of the issues stated including that the automatic valve that was installed was in violation of City code. Nowlin neverpulled a permit nor got an inspection. I am now having to pay to have Nowlins mistakes and incomplete work corrected.
Description of Work: Landscape design and drawings. Removal of concrete walkway; area preparation and removal of soil/gradework and drainage; construction of retaining wall; installation of automatic valve for watering system.

It is always sad to have a customer be dissatisfied. For over 10 years I have built landscapes for happy customers who want 1-on-1 service and who trust my design skills. What this client expected was a Landscape Architect quality drawing for the price of a design. He wanted me to build a "rush" job overseen by two project managers while he was out-of-the country. I should have said "no" to these conditions, but I was too eager to please. Project was completed and paid in full on November 13th, 2012. Two months passed without communication from the client. I felt confident that the job was completed to his satisfaction. Then, to my surprise I was re-contacted by the customer. He wanted me to do additional work with no additional compensation. His memory (not my bid) told him that I was to come back and finish some" to-be- determined" items. To remedy this situation, I met with the Project Manager who oversaw my part of the project on-site. We reviewed the work done as compared to the project bid I submitted. We concluded that the job was built to the specifications of my bid. She relayed this to the customer. I was asked to sign and return several legal and tax documents. Again, as I understood it, my job was complete. Now, I find this unhappy review on Angie's List. So for a third time, I called the customer. We both calmly communicated our understanding of the situation. After all this time, we certainly remember what happened differently. I offered monetary compensation. It wasn't enough for him. In the end we both agreed that I could not make this right in his eyes. In closing, what I have learned from this process is priceless. Clear communication and contracts are paramount. I am encouraged to understand and serve my clients better always. Sincerely, Nigel Nowlin- Owner

I opted not to have the work done because it was too expensive at the time. He was good. He definitely knew what he was talking about. If I had the budget I would use him in the future.
Description of Work: I contacted Nowlin Superior Landscape. I received an estimate over the phone a couple of weeks ago. He was going to finish a driveway with paver stones.

I had been searching for someone to design a patio and yard. After numerous people gave me quotes etc, I met Nigel. From the first moment he stepped into my yard, I knew I had found the right person. I told him what I was thinking about, Nigel quickly took out paper and gave me a better idea. We started off just having him put in a patio, which then spread to the entire yard, front walk-way and top of the driveway. We are have an acre of property that was completely out of control. Nigel gave me an estimate broken down by sections, making it easy for us to decided what we wanted now or what could wait. He kept in contact, meeting with us a few times before we made the final decision on exactly what we wanted. The crew Nigel has working for him were professional and extremely easy to work with. As they were working, I kept adding "something" else, and these guys were patient in working with me and making sure I got exactly what I wanted. They showed up early in the morning and worked all day, 5 days a week, until the job was complete. The patio and walk-ways they put in are beyond beautiful! Not only is the workmanship top quality, but these men are a pleasure to work with! If they saw something that needed to be done, they took it upon themselves to do it even though it was beyond the scope of what they were hired to do. With recent rains, I had no pooling of water which was a major problem before. They are returning to do my daughters yard next and we are planning on having them back to do the front of our property soon! I highly recommend Nowlin Superior Landscapes. Design, workmanship, professionalism, cost were all incredible!
Description of Work: Belgard patio (1000 sq ft) and walk-ways in yard, driveway, front walk-way, drip system, clean-up and regrading.

I can't emphasize enough how satisfied we are with the work done as well as the crew's attitude and work ethic. They showed up each morning at the time they said they would be here, they made sure our driveway wasn't blocked for our cars, they cleaned up each day before they left. There was minimal interuption of our usual daily routine. Both the project manager and the owner were in regular communication with us, making sure that what was being done was correct, and having us approve work done before they went on to the next step. We made some changes in the original plans as we went along, and it got larger than we anticipated and planned, It was not a problem for these guys! They adjusted plans, actually had to obtain more materials, all with a pleasant attitude. When it came time to do the pathways and the gazebo floor, their artistic talent shined through! I had given them a general idea of what I wanted, and it always exceeded my expectations. The gazebo is square, the flooring done as a quarter sun with sun rays. It is stunning! The fountain was designed and situated for optimal acoustic effect as well as beauty. We now have a huge patio for entertaining which is designed in a half circle and the pattern done with the pavers is great. One thing which I should mention, a problem we had was that the access to our yard was not wide enough for the forklift to bring our boulders in. The crew did not have to go the gym that week! They got those boulders in and set. To sum up, the owner/designer (Nigel) gave us the design with an estimate. He kept us posted as to when his crew would start. There were no hidden costs or unexpected expenses. The crew was professional, neat (as neat as someone working with dirt could be, anyway) cleaned up after themselves at the end of each day, and worked hard at what they did. The cost was what was presented upfront. Not only did they know the hands on "how to's" of the work, they displayed artistic talent and an eye for beauty as well as being practical. Areas were designed wtih their use in mind as well as what they looked like. In all, the company was easy to work with. I certainly would reccommend them.
Description of Work: A complete yard landscape, starting pretty much from scratch. The old concrete patio as well as a small section of pavers was removed and hauled away. Weeds removed, and yard was graded. The landscaping included belgard pavers for a patio and curved walking path around the whole yard. Retainer walls and floor for a gazebo done with same pavers as well as a fountain, large boulders and gravel. total of 8 plants, 5 agave and 3 ocotillo cacti. Painted back wall of yard for an accent wall as well as remove and replace old gravel from an area in the front of our house, by front entrance and along the sides of our house.
