The finished product looks nice. The initial bid was quite low, about half of the final cost. I think the contractor did not realize how complicated the job actually was. He estimated it would take two or three days; it took closer to three weeks of actual work. (I was out of town some of the time so the beginning to the end was more than a month.) The vinyl and the very thick coat of mastic under it had to be ground off, which generated a colossal amount of very fine dust. Despite the plastic hung over the adjoining doors, the entire house was covered with it. It got into the lock of the outside door, which will have to be replaced. The cleanup at the end of each day and at the end of the project was minimal. The contractor did not show up for the initial consultation and had to be rescheduled. He never arrived when he said he would, usually two or three hours later. Twice he never came at all and did not let me know he wasn't going to be there. However, I am satisfied with the finished product. He did a good job of replacing one section of the floor that had been damaged by water, matching the existing wood very well. He also refinished a small dining table at no extra charge. The final cost was very reasonable, considering the number of hours involved.
