The last review for Hilltop on Angi's is from June 2020. Maybe they have no crews in 2021, but they sell themselves as a huge company with lots of trucks and workers. It's been almost 3 months and they aren't even 1/4 done with the work. They send one person, sometimes 2, to look like there is progress. They don't always have the tools. We've paid them almost the full amount and we have little to show for it. If you are considering them, get a Completion Date in writing. We were stupid and didn't. They go fast on those jobs that have high traffic and visibility, but for the rest of us....We're tucked away in a neighborhood. It will take them a year at this rate. We are incredibly frustrated and disappointed in this company. We liked talking and setting up the contract with Jim, but it was all words. We actually thought we'd have a dependable landscaper who would help us through the years, planting and maintaining the landscape. We can't handle working with them at this point. Jim should have said that they couldn't get it done within a reasonable timetable and not agree to take the job. That would have been the honest thing to do. We would have respected that. We don't respect the 'stringing along the client for months' approach.

About a year ago, the President of Hilltop Landscape Architects looked at our front yard, discussed our desired outcome, offered suggestions, and indicated his intent to provide a design and proposal for the project. Another Hilltop representative stopped by our house a few days later, discussed the project with us, took detailed measurements, and stated he would provide a design within a week. After a few months and no further response from Hilltop, we posted a request for a response through Hilltop's website. Still no response. A very disappointing example of a complete absence of professionalism.

I hate to give a poor rating but after the initial meet at our house on April 4th we have not heard back from them. They said that this is their busy season which I understand and that it would be a couple of weeks before they would have a plan ready. After about 3 weeks I called and left a message asking how the plan was going. I never received a response to my call. Another week went by and I sent them an email asking for an update. I never received a response to the email either. We called them about a week ago and left a message. Again we got no response. So I don't know what the quality and prices of their work. I also don't know if we will be a customer of theirs.

In October of last year (2016) we contracted with Hilltop to landscape an area that was all weeds due to septic system replacement. Jim, the owner of Hilltop, was extremely responsive and receptive to our needs and our extensive input to the project. Without charge, he created the first design and then modified it with our input prior to any contract being signed. Although their website concentrates on hardscaping, they did a great job with our project which consisted of removing the old weeds, sifting and reusing the dirt, placing ground cloth, and placing large rocks and plants. They installed irrigation pipes to the new plants and connected it to the existing system. They also cut back the larger plants that we wanted to keep and reused decorative stones whenever possible. Jim's recommendations for xeric plants were excellent and all the plants are doing well one year later. All the work was completed in a very professional manner and within budget. I would definitely hire them again.

Hilltop sent out two very skilled individuals who dug many holes to locate tubing, determine flow direction and find the source of the flow and likely location of the blockage. After several hours, the problem area was located and the tubing was replaced. We now have irrigation restored to our plants. The blockage was caused by tree roots.

The whole landscaping job took about 7 days to complete with 4-6 installers. Their work was meticulous and did an excellent job laying down the moss rock retaining walls and planters. They did not rush through the job and did an excellent clean up afterwards. A few months later, some plants died and they came out right away to replace them under warranty.
Description of Work: I selected Hilltop to landscape both the front and backyard after a new house construction. The effort included building a moss rock retaining wall, two large moss rock planters, laying flagstone paver walking paths, installing a dual zone irrigation system, and planting more than 40 plants.

My experience with Hilltop is pretty mixed to be honest. They did a fantastic job removing a large tree in the front of my home which took several days to complete. The remained of my contracted service, I am sad to say, was far less great. After removal of the tree, I was told that to remove the stump there would be an additional charge of $200 which I thought was included in the full removal of the tree on the initial quote. They trimmed the remainder of the trees as requested though near the end of the job I reminded them to trim a large branch overhanging the home. I suspect that they were in a hurry to be done and heard a large bang as this branch was carelessly dropped on roof. I now have to call a roofer to repair the damage to the roof. Honestly, I'd look elsewhere before having Hilltop take care of your property.

In the past we had used Hilltop to trim our large cottonwood trees (a big job!) and other trees in our yard. They did a great job. The company showed that it is exceptional, however, when we had a gigantic cottonwood limb fall on our house late one Friday afternoon. Fred, their arborist, called his team as they were going home and a number of them agreed to come early Saturday morning to remove the limb from our roof, which was in an extremely precarious and dangerous position. Hilltop employees are skilled at their jobs, and they take great care of their customers. Our family sleeps safe tonight!

Jim Forrester was friendly, knowledgable, professional, and detail-oriented in his plan and estimate. He provided a plan including computer generated landscape drawings with his estimate. Hilltop came up with some ideas we had not thought of to improve our landscape. The workers showed up on time, worked hard and executed the plan diligently. They were responsible and flexible and were able to solve some unexpected issues that came up during the project. All this was done on-time and without extra costs. The workers and foreman were friendly and knowledgeable. Jim and his team took pride in their work. We would highly recommend Hilltop.

Jim came out on 3/13/15 to look at our property. He said he would get back to us in a week to ten days with an estimate and design ideas. On 3/26 when we hadn't heard from him we called and left a voice mail for him asking him to call us. He did not. We called again on 3/31. I spoke with Molly who said she'd find out what was going on and call me back that afternoon. She did not. I called again 4/1 and asked for either Molly or Jim to call us back. Today is 4/6 and we still haven't received the courtesy of a 30 second phone call. Very disappointing.

Being from out of town, I interviewed several landscape companies. Friends had recommended Hilltop because they had been around a long time and were reliable and understood my HOA landscaping rules and regulations (which are very strict)/ Another company wanted $67,000. to do the work. I have to say that Hilltop was excellent-they really met and even exceeded my expectations. The owner himself came out and discussed what I needed and he continued to stay in touch with me throughout the entire process often stopping by to check on things. He provided me with a Project manager and a supervisor who was always on the job. The three of them talked constantly about things that needed to be changed as the project went along. They were very detail oriented and paid attention to my requests and changes without batting an eye. When the work was done, the project manager told me to call him anytime for problems that can occur and assured me that they would make it right. At the end of the project, the owner himself came to go over things with me and made sure that I was happy. I really don't feel that I could have found a better company to do my landscape work. I just always knew they were on top of things and had my best interest at heart. Since I am a single gal, I have to be careful with who I hire and after doing a lot of homework, I know I made a good decision. I never had "bad vibes" about the personnel or the work, which is a wonderful thing. I felt the price was very fair after getting bids from other landscape companies. I did not want to hire someone who I could not trust or depend on even tho it may have been a bit cheaper. I wanted a reliable stable company who I knew would be in business for the long term and could work with me in the future should things need fixing. Lastly, they even provided a port a potty for their crew so that no one ever came into my house. Just one of those nice little touches that make things easier for the homeowner.
Description of Work: I built a new home in Placitas and needed my one acre lot landscaped and set up for the monsoon water runoffs that happen here. Hilltop did all the work, including the drawings, plans, providing the plants, draining systems, drip systems rock, concrete pads, etc.

OK... this was a MASSIVE project. We live on significant slope and how the foundation of our house was 'shored up' when it was built in1989 has not stood the test of a modest period of time. Animals digging under the rocks, weather, and maybe not the best design to begin with made it necessary to get serious about solving the problem. (I can't even put words to how poorly the original deck was built... ) We did a lot of research here on Angie's List for landscape companies that could provide engineering services along with making things look pretty. We settled on two, and received bids from both. Hilltop also provided a stunning architectural-type drawing of how the finished project would look, with the suggested plants identified, types of stones identified, and everything. Since we have no landscaping background the drawing was simply fantastic to help us imagine what their finished 'look' would be. The bid from Hilltop was notably lower, resolved all of our concerns, and was far more creative so we took the plunge (we have never hired work done before because we, generally speaking, can build/do/fix pretty much whatever we need... but this was way beyond d.i.y.). The biggest compliment I can give is that when this project was finished they created something that LOOKED LIKE US. The owner, Jim Forrester, met with us on our initial consultation. What a gem of a person. He walked around the problem area, listened to us and could pick up from our conversation with him 'who we are'. He didn't just focus on solving the problems, he and his team somehow included two of us in the design. Even after such extraordinary changes, our home looks like us, not like somebody had some great ideas about xeriscaping and then came in and landscaped our place with their look. Our project was huge - they may say it was a 'normal size project' but it sure seemed huge to us. It took just over two months. Having folks (technically strangers to begin with) all over the place, every day, with so many different things going on is a strange experience. The employees - every single one of them - were respectful and pleasant (even when the work was physically extremely demanding and likely tedious). The foreman was excellent, patient and didn't miss a beat. The supervisor was helpful and also never missed a beat - between the two of them every question got answered and they kept things moving all the time. Jim came up to check the progress on a regular basis which was really special, it made us feel well cared for. This company does extremely large-scale projects so to have personal attention on what would be a small project, comparatively, surprised us in a very good way. When the gravel driveway got a bit chewed up due to really heavy rain, they brought in gravel and made everything as good as new. When the decorative gravel was spread at the very end of the project they were very generous with it which made the place look gorgeous. Our deck, like many decks, has a few fussy spots where special cuts/cutouts need to be made - these were done with tremendous skill and simply vanish - beautifully. No detail was overlooked or considered unimportant, no skimping or corner-cutting - this company is THE BEST. There is a reason they have been around so long... we will hire them for our next landscaping project without hesitation.

Everything went fine until the job was finished. The retaining walls and rocks are wonderful. Hilltop were meant to plant 150 plants - they may have but the majority did not survive more than one week. When we tried to get them to remedy this they said they would but then would not return phone calls or emails. This is not what we expected from what is considered to be a reputable company.

The reason we went with them is when they did the planning, they brought four colored architect plans. I don't know the size of the paper was but it took off the whole kitchen table and that was a real plus because the order of the company actually did it with my wife started the day one and said "okay, what about if I move the plants over here and we put this lawn there" and so we changed it, and so we can visualize it all. So, that was pretty cool. The reason why I went with them is just because of what ability was used. The thing about Hilltop was because of my.. I've been working at a several building and I was familiar that they did a most of the big several government multimillion dollar project on court house and some stuff like that and I happened to know that in order to do that you have to have $7million in liability insurance. The government verifies it. So, when you're a homeowner you like the ultimate general contractor for yourself. So, if this is some kind of contractor or somebody on your property and they cut their finger off, the guys insurance wasn't paid, guess who's gonna have to pay? It's the homeowner. The other thing I like about Hilltop is we've looked at a couple of other contractors who were smaller and in fact one of them ended up on new because he was a bad guy but one of his subs was ripping people off and is now in jail. But the thing about Hilltop was they had their own dump truck and tractors they used in landscaping. I would use this provider again in the future.

This landscaper is unresponsive to my call trying to contact him concerning a broken irrigation controller. It was made known to us that we were to call Hilltop directly for an emergency and in hot weather, this is an emergency. We had to go through the developer which is Pulte homes and they need a lead time of a week to get Hilltop to come out. This landscaper has a big contract with the developer to handle all their landscaping and in my opinion, their work is very, very substandard. It reflects on both the landscaping company and the developer. I have had other landscape contractors tell me that their irrigation work is poor and must be corrected while doing subsequent work.
