Description of Work: The company fabricated and installed two security doors. The process was very efficient and I will use this company again. The owner came to measure and was very knowledgeable and patient with us throughout our asking dozens of questions. His wife then called us almost immediately to set up our installation date which was a month out due to fabrication. The installers came on the day and time specified!! The installation went very well and we were just so happy with everyone!!

Description of Work: Don Best from Barnett Aldon installed a security storm door in 2009 and it is still working great and looks good too. I thought it was pricey at the time but has since been worth it. The added security is a great feature.

Description of Work: Last April a robber broke into my daughter's home while she and my seven year old granddaughter were in the house. After taking the 40 inch HD TV out to his car, he walked down the hall, opened the door to the master bedroom, and found himself face to face with my granddaughter who was screaming in terror, whereupon he ran out of the house and drove off before the police arrived about an hour and a half later to record stolen item serial numbers and dust for finger prints, neither of which led to recovery of any stolen property or an arrest. | |During the next two weeks it became clear that my granddaughter was too traumatized to sleep alone in her bedroom. So my daughter and I decided that we needed to install an alarm system or window bars. A talk with my granddaughter made it clear that she didn't understand how a bell could keep anyone from entering the house and that she wanted bars on her bedroom window. So we obtained bids for basic wrought iron window bars from three ironworks companies. One of these three companies, Barnett Aldon Ironworks differed from the other two companies in that they offered a large variety of bar assembly designs which didn't look like basic bar assemblies and were pretty, even artistic. After reviewing the many choices we picked a design that had a rectangular outer edge and a simple lattice of interior bars that were butt welded together, which means that all of bars lie in the same plane. In addition we picked a light tan color for the bar assemblies and added security panel screens to the two bar assemblies for the front windows in my granddaughter's bedroom and playroom. | |Because of my granddaughter's fears, Don Best, the owner of Barnett Aldon Ironworks, moved our order up in his work queue which meant that after the window bar assembly measurements were completed and checked, the twelve assemblies were manufactured and installed in about one week. Finally, the finish of the installed assemblies looks good (the butt weld surfaces have been ground smooth, the paint has dried evenly, and all bracket attachments are anchored solidly into wall wood studs), and on the evening of the day when the assemblies were installed, my granddaughter happily climbed into her top bunk bed and slept peacefully through the night by herself. Mission accomplished. | |The above was written for Barnet-Aldon. It is an honest description. For the survey, no grade for price is given as I have no idea what other comanies might charge for the bars I purchased from Barnet-Aldon. | |Jeremy Sprung |

In general, they were pretty good. The product is very good and the field work and field crew was excellent. What sticks out to me is how the field crew got the job done and solved problems; they were more impressive than the sales and office. They were competitively priced and are good problem solvers.

Price is only for wrought iron portion. Don Best has been performing work in this area for many years. People who know or have heard of him, had only favorable things to say about him. They do really good work, however Don is very busy, so you'll need to factor that into your schedule. Lessons learned. We had our fence constructed with a glossy black color. We have had problems with leapord spotting, in which the gloss level varies. Really noticable when the sun is at a low angle and reflects off the fence, not noticeable when the sun is higher up. Don had his folks come out and spent several hours touching it up to even it out, but they were painting when the sun was higher up. The problem still exists, so Quality is currently a and quot;Band quot;. Spotting aside, the fence looks great. The final price was several thousand higher than the initial quote, but we added about 60' of fence. Also, the original quote was based on a level lot, so if you get an initial quote give them an idea of elevation changes. Don spent a lot of time dealing with the subcontractor (Aspen Construction LLC) and despite the subcontractor blunders, made sure everything was done correctly.
Description of Work: 400' custom wrought iron fence with a double gate and a pedestrian gate. Subcontracted concrete portion (mow strip and pilasters) out to Aspen Construction LLC, which is evaluated in a separate report.

Very Well
Description of Work: Installation of front and back wrought iron security doors. The work done was excellent. The quality of the product was excellent. They did a great job installing the doors and making sure that the fit was perfect. Color requested was a perfect match. The crew that installed were professional and efficient. They came highly recommended and we were not disappointed. It was a slow start, but well worth the wait to have the quality product we got. I will use them again.

As we discussed in email communications, notably 5/27/10, they tried to clean it up. It's better but still rusts. The ironwork itself will have to be removed again and sealed again where we can't reach. We haven't tried yet to find someone else to do this and so we're still living with it. It does seem secured in place.
Description of Work: I was able to get this company out to clean up rust damage on stucco from this job, seal the ironwork itself and secure it to the cutouts.

Dear Member, I was taken by surprise when I saw your posting on Angie's list. When I originally met you and Tom to discuss the ironwork, you both had selected the rust finish. I thought that you both understood that the rust finish is exactly that, a natural rust patina, and I apologize if I didn't make that very clear. Tom soon after installation called me to express his concerns about the rust finish and explained to me that it was staining the wall. I responded telling him that it was doing exactly what I said it would but I would be happy to remove the rails, paint, and install them, which would solve the problem. I received no response but I was sent a letter by Angie's List stating your concerns. We then contacted you and I came out and looked at the job. I then contacted my paint sales rep to see if there was any solution. He told me he sold a product that might work to seal the rust finish. I then contacted you to explain that I thought I had a solution to the problem but I personally never had any experience with using this product and could not honestly assure you that it was going to work. When we came to reinstall the rails we did our best to remove the rust with the cleaner that you purchased. We also used another rust remover that, I thought, did a good job cleaning the rust stains from the stucco. I appreciate your feedback on my company and I sincerely apologize that we weren't able to provide you 100% satisfaction. I am more than willing to resolve the problem, and I would be happy to meet you to discuss the options available to resolve your concerns. Please give me a call. Best Regards, Don Best

After someone set my car on fire, I called to get estimates from Barnett Aldon for a driveway gate and window bars. They said they'd send someone at 2 on Wednesday and that's when he arrived, but TWO WEEKS after the Wednesday we scheduled. I came home unexpectedly and found a guy in my yard taking measurements. I hired them anyway because the quality of their wrought iron work seemed higher than that of other companies. I thought about it a lot because their prices are a lot higher, too. They installed a driveway gate and some window bars, but if I'd not happened to come home for lunch when the guy who came out to take measurements and note specs for the job arrived, it would have been a disaster. He was planning to make the gate to open the wrong way (which would have left me with a gate I couldn't close once I'd pulled the car in!). Also, their initial bid included an additional fee to pour concrete and put in metal gate posts. The man who came out to install the gate posts didn't seem to want to do the work. He said the existing gate wooden posts were very solid and would work fine. However, when I spoke to the salesman about it, he would not lower the cost to reflect the change. The salesman, who I think was named Paul, was exasperated and implied the job was too small to lower the price any further. At that point, I should have just cancelled all together, but I really wanted to get my car behind a gate and had already waited so long, that I went on. All in all, the driveway gate and one set of window bars they put in are very nice, but the whole experience left me with a bad taste in my mouth and I wouldn't hire them again. I have to say, they did extensive wrought iron window and door work for my sister's family and the quality of service my sister got was radically different, perhaps because it was the owner who came out to get measurements and give an estimate. Still, although they have been pleased with the quality of the wrought iron overall, the special (higher priced) non-slamming front door they were advised to install now takes a big push or two to get shut at all, making it very easy to accidentally leave it unlocked, which sort of defeats the purpose. All the Albuquerque wrought iron companies I called to get bids from either showed up late, didn't come at all, and/or had hidden charges they didn't disclose in the initial bid, so I think this is just an area where you want to be very careful. This was, of course, before I joined Angie's List, so I just called from the phone book.

Dear Member, I am truly sorry to hear of your experience with my company. I was never made aware of the problems you have had with the work we have done for you. I'm sorry that you were not left completely satisfied with our business. I cannot tell you what happened with us not coming out two weeks after the scheduled estimate time. We work from an Outlook calendar so the only thing I can think as to what happened is that the person who set the estimate time mistakenly put it on the wrong week. Generally when I come out to look at a project, I leave with you a written estimate. I have never charged more than the estimate unless we did more work. To my knowledge, in your case we did less than the estimate, but if you feel that is not the case I would be happy to refund you for anything you paid for and did not receive. Had I known of this incident I would have gotten it resolved right away. I do take every customer's concerns seriously and would have come out and met with you to find out what went wrong so I could personally make things right and leave you 100% satisfied. Every small business owner struggles to personally oversee everything going on in his or her business. When I hear of a problem I do my best to resolve it promptly. I am the owner of Barnett Aldon Ironworks and have been in business for 34 years. I have personally sold and overseen the successful completion of over 30,000 homeowner's ornamental iron projects. Over 70% of my business comes from satisfied previous customers or referrals from them. I am sorry that your experience with us was not what we strive to make it be. We do appreciate every customer's business and it is not our policy to upsell anyone, only to do exactly what they want done. We work hard to give our customers the most value for their hard earned money. I want to make this right with you and if you would please call me at 345-1878 to schedule a time to meet with you and resolve this. Best Regards, Don Best
