they were here when they said they would be, and stayed until the job was done. They made us feel they were as concerned about our problem as we were. Called to follow up, too.

Just to make sure all is understood: Job was looked at by Jim's handyman Service...Price was quoted via email to customer...No response or questions were received by JHS from the potential customer in regards to the estimate or the price ..It is really unfair at this point to do letter grades and say u wouldnt hire based on a piece of paper.,,,

There's nothing negative I have to say about him. He came with his wife and they were very friendly. I think he gave a reasonable estimate. It was very pleasant. I can't say anything bad about it. I still am considering him.

They were very responsive when we called and came a day or so later to see what needed to be done. Very nice professional etc. That is where it ended. This was mid October. It was a chase thereafter. A couple of phone calls to get the contract. Get the contract send it back. They claim something was not completed on the contract which was b******t. Back and forth. We included a 50% deposit. More phone calls to get the paperwork back. Then nothing for several weeks. We make a couple of phone calls. Oh our truck was vandalized and we are working with insurance companies to get it resolved have to replace tools etc. Ok we get it. Now it is probably early December. Nothing for more weeks. We have to continually call. They call and say we are going to set up an appt no worries Finally mid December they call ok we are definitely coming on a Friday at 9AM absolutely sorry sorry. They call two days later can we come on Saturday Friday job is going to run long. Ok we say (understanding this whole time). Saturday comes supposed to be here at 9. At 10AM still not here. My husband calls oh we are at Home Depot getting supplies. My husband says no phone call nothing that you will be late? Gets an attitude back. Hangs up and says this is ridiculous. Calls back and says forget it this is crazy we do not want you to do the work (mind you it is two and a half months later) need to leave at noon no phone call etc etc. They say ok and then proceed to send a nasty email exchange saying it is our fault they never would have had time to do the inside job and we did not let them know we had to leave. It was crazy. My husband said send back the check cancel the contract. We have yet to see either but the check was not cashed. Do not use these people they are terrible business people.

After I did the estimate for them it was awhile before they responded for a contract...Once the estimate was accepted , the contract was sent out right away...It took awhile to receive it back with a deposit...My procedure and it is written with the email/letter is for the customer to sign 2 originals and return with the deposit..This did not happen as i only received one orig. and a note was sent back stating that and that I would use a copy of the 1st orig contract as the 2nd contract ..In bet ween the receipt of the contract and November, I had a truck break in and other contracts that got pushed behind due to that. In November , I contacted them by email and phone as i had several openings around Thanksgiving...No response received...In Dec I received a response, I believe they were away and they apologized for no response... Yes, I had to change an appt in late Dec with them to a Saturday at 9am but did not know they had to leave by 11- 1130 a.m. If i had known that I would not have scheduled the job as more than 2 hrs was needed to do the job.....Also , the weather was more conducive in Nov to outside work as it got cold here quick. I explained to them when they called that i was running late and had to go Home Depot as the caulk had frozen and could not use it..Noone was rude to them on the phone...They were text because afterwards to explain a 2 hr window wasnt going to work for this job. The check was cashed 2 days before the start of the job which is in the contract (3 business days to be exact)....When things were not agreeable to the [member name removed]'s and they wanted to cancel the contract I sent a note cancelling the contract and an explanation further about the time frame in which the job was...more than 2 hours...along with a business check for $265.00 reimbursement...To this date the business check has not been cashed nor has the envelope been returned by the post office.I retain copies of the cancellation of the contract , my business check etc.

I have used him twice. One time was for the painting and the other time was for a few little repairs. Both times he was excellent. He was on time and came when he was supposed to come. He did the work he was supposed to do in a wonderful manner. The only thing I have to say is they were a little sloppy; there was some paint on the carpets. That is a point against him.

Needed to replace rails on my basement stairway, which is very steep. On railing had come completely off after about 30 years. Asked Jim's Handyman Service to not only replace the original rails that were broken, but to install new wooden banister railings on each side; so that I now have two wood rails, one on each side. Result: 1) Jim's Handyman Service (JHS) installed new hardware on ALL the basement railings (the new ones and existing one) that is far superiot to the original hardware for holding the wood rails. 2) Jim hand crafted and sanded smooth new, extra side wood bannister railings that ofter twice the gripping surface as verus the original ones from 30 Years ago. 3) Bottom Line: Awesome job. Very happy with materials and work. Will definitely use again. Very reasonably priced and very courteous, easy to work with.

I mistakenly called Jim's Handyman service last Thursday because I had confused him with an electrician I had also found and bookmarked in Angie's List. I was expecting the electrician at 8:00 and he hadn't arrived at 8:30. Left a message for Jim. I got a call back quite quickly asking me if I had called the wrong service - which I had. But I wouldn't have known it if not for the follow up call. I am so pleased that they took the time to make sure I was aware of my mistake. They are on the top of my list when I need the next round of tasks I need done around the house.

I did not hire Jim because he is listed as an electrician which he is not. He told me how would bring in an electrician which would be additional. His estimate seemed very high, it included installing a doorbell and switching out 3 small bathroom exhaust fans. He told me he would also quote changing my switches for the fans instead of installing new ones, this was not included in the quote. He also did not provide the quote when promised, and it took 3 days for him to respond to my voice mail. Jim may be a good handy man, but I searched for and need an electrician, what a waste of time! I think he should be removed form the electrician list.

jim's handyman service is not listed as an electrician on angies list.. He is listed and licensed as a home improvement contract...The company has an electrician that is used and (removed member name) was told that when there are box and wiring issues involved....Jim's handyman service can change fixtures , hang ceiling fans and change outlets. She asked Jim's Handyman Service to review her condo inspection report which showed potential issues such as in the box and alumninum wiring...She gave JHS a copy of the report and permission to give to the electrician to review...the quote for $915 included the PURCHASE and install of the 3 bathroom fans which range up to almost 150 each for the bathroom fan alone(approx 450 in mat'l) ...also wanted separate switches but the labor price could not be included in estimate until wiring is pullled due to the aluminum wiring....it was explained in the estimate. The dining room ceiling fan that she wanted in a bedroom that had no electric in the ceiling had to have electric pulled but again because of the alum wiring this becomes an issue..The estimate stated that an electrician needed to be brought in for that assessment also...Additionally this woman never called when she received the estimate for further clarification ...JHS called her as the electrician was willing to come in an assess the inspection report/alum wiring///hooking up of additional fixtures with her and he was going to work with JHS. Additionally customer visit was on aug 23... A tentative date was given for her to receive estimate. .prices needed to be gotten and JHS had to talk to the electrician who was away...In fact she was told this via phone...within 1 1/2 days of her phone call why there was a delay...Additionally had to mail the est. via u.s. mail as email address was not correct...left a voice mail in regards to this and she never responded so sent in US Mail. Fixtures cannot be hooked up to aluminum wiring especially if there is no box in the ceiling...copper would need to be pullled after an assessment of her 5 pages of electrical inspection report with issues. Hmmm a " C" for punctuality....actually called her as was ahead of schedule.... Interesting..... Get condemned for going the extra mile with an electrician reviewing yhour paperwork....people do go away and you were told he was unavail....He was willing to come out to do a free estimate and coordination of efforts...and u gave JHS a "D" for responsiveness. JHS is not going to hang a fixture or change switches for fans if the situation is questionalble Again, Jim's Handyman Service, LLC is not listed as a electrician ...listed as licensed home improvement contractor...The licensed electricians and licensed plumbers are brought in at my suggestion and she was told that her situation warranted and agreed for me to take the inspection paper to the electrician. An "F" for pricing ....hmmm ...did u call and question anything or ask for a break down....no u did not...JHS called you and your answer was making other arrangements. ..... "C" for professioalism.....I listened to your needs and responsed honestly...... Best to you

When our microwave broke down we bought a new one and looked for a handyman to install it for us. We picked Jim's company off of Angie's List since he had such good reviews. He was very busy when we first called but told us he would squeeze us in on the following Saturday after his other jobs were done. We were so relieved that he could help us. You don't think that you are going to miss your microwave until you don't have one anymore! Jim arrived around 5 pm and went right to work. Although the microwave was supposed to be the replacement for the old one, the installation was different. Jim took his time, was very neat and did a great job. We would definitely call him back again for other projects.

the work for [member name removed] was done in Bloomfield, NJ not Newark, NJ. Jim's Handyman Service was hired to do the following: remove carpets in several rooms on the first floor and paint several first floor rooms....liv rroom, bathroom walls, bedroom , kitchen , backsplash, cabinet modifications,etc...[member name removed] was given an estimate which stated what exactly was being painted, etc to be done along with a contract which she signed agreeing to the price... While the project was being done [member name removed]wanted more work done as for example : When paint for a railing was left for me, which was not in an estimate, she was given an addendum with an add'l cost. When she wanted the hallway to the second floor painted (walls and ceiling) an addendum was issued with extra costs. She added the outside of her front door. The gas line needed to be changed because of a stove she bought an addendum was issued with extra costs.these addendums are change orders...This went on and on...She approved each addendum and its cost. She was happy with all the work all along and approved each add'l item that SHE added to the orig est and pricing...Contractors cannot "do the while you are here items" without charging. Her contract stated the estimate price and stated add'l items would be charged for and were in writing . I did not remove her kitchen entirely....I removed a wall oven and made cabinetry in that spot out of cabinets removed from the ceiling...When she had to leave the country for weeks I gave her a punch list of what was left and a listing at all times of costs associated with the work she added. .....I was complete until the point of her getting a countertop and when she got back I had to wait till she ordered and had it installed..Due to the problems with her countertop install, I went back and had to make modifications and then finished the balance of my work.. That included the sink (correcting the plumbing of a friend of hers that had worked on it also) and a backsplash....had also explained to her in the way beginning that a glass bksplsh was more labor than ceramic and that my price was based on ceramic and she bought glass. .....we had a good relationship from beg to end .Problem we had is we had to work around a friend that did the electric changes and granite install that had issues along with the customer getting the wrong type stove for that countertop/old cabinets..In fact I was the one that told her to about the new broken stove even though it was really the wrong stove for her granite setup ...never had a problem with pricing.I had a key to the house to work there at any time and was thanked for advice..[member name removed] needs to understand the meaning of the word estimate and when things are added on they have to be charged for (all were with her approval). They were in writing and were not done till she approved it and was given itemized updates on the project. I put everything in writing and it was approved....obviously pricing isn't a :D. You were happy with the work all along ....I saved you from buying new cabinets bkz u couldn't afford them and modified them for more cabinet spacing for you...Certainly doesn't qualify me for an :F. Professionalism for a D when everything was out in the open and written up at all times and had access to calling me. You trusted me with a key to yur home and I worked with you when you had to leave the country for almost 4 weeks and then came back to your job when you had the next phase ready to go.

I called and left a message stating I had a list of jobs and I needed an estimate. I received a call back the next day but I was on the other line so I called right back. I asked if they charged hourly or if it was based on individual jobs. She said it depends, if it's a big project, they charge per project but if it's small they charge per hour. So she said she needed a list of the jobs. Her tone of voice came across as if this was annoying for her but whatever. So I was like okay well first, do you do electrical work? (Because some of my jobs involve electrical work and I didn't want to list it if they didn't do electrical) She answered and again said (in a very agitated tone) I need a list of the jobs. If that's how it is from the beginning, I don't want to deal with them. Maybe she was having a bad day, maybe they are really busy but either way, not my fault. I said nevermind, thanks and hung up. I then received a text back saying we were disconnected and they don't service NY. For one, I'm not in NY and two, if she thought we were disconnected, why not call back? I did text back to say that her tone came across as agitated and that I didn't want to bother. And she did text back that it wasn't intended. But there are too many other companies out there. I just thought it was unprofessional. But this review has nothing to do with the work which might be great so maybe you'll catch her on a good day.

Hired them based on the glowing reviews on Angie?s list. They arrived promptly to give me an estimate and I was very impressed: they were professional, gave me a fair price and even made suggestions as to what I could do to save money. Told me what materials I needed to purchase and that the job could be completed in a day?they would call to schedule as soon as the special order window was ready. Signed the contract on May 26th. Didn't hear from them about the window, which was ok since there was a delay in the door delivery. Emailed them on 6/18 to let them know the doors were ready-- could we schedule a date? Called two days later and was told they never received the email, but the window was ready and that I would be hearing from them soon. Nothing. Six days later, a leak developed in the upstairs kitchen sink where they were going to replace the faucet. I emailed them because now it had become more of an urgent problem. Also, we were getting close to the end of the return period for some of the materials I had purchased when we signed the contract. They responded that their truck was broken, to shut off the water supply valve, and they would call me that night to schedule. Their email never addressed the issue about the returns at all, and the promised call never came. Another four days passed, the water continued to come down and now we had damage a foot long in our plaster ceiling. I contacted them again, stressing that if they couldn?t take care of it, to let me know so I could hire someone else to fix it. Didn't want to just call someone else as we already had a contract with these people. I got an email telling me to shut off the valve, again. We already had. And that Jim would definitely be scheduling the following night. The next day I received an email telling me to call them tomorrow; they would try to fit me in. I emailed and called twice. No answer. I was finally able to get through when I called from a work number, told Caren that I needed a response about the leak now, and reminded her that they left me believing that the rest of the project would be done in a reasonable time frame, and that I just wanted an estimated start date. She responded that that they were now working on a contract from April. Mind you, it?s now July. They never told me that they were that busy and backed up when we hired them. They would not be available until the following Sunday July 7th to fix the leak: eleven days after I had first contacted them about it. Said they had a small job at 9:15, but would be here immediately afterwards to fix the water problem. Still no mention at all about the rest of the work. After waiting all of Sunday morning, I finally gave them a call at 1:30 pm to find out what the delay was. Jim told me that they were having unexpected trouble on the morning job, and that they wouldn?t be able to get here until 3:30. Apparently, they didn?t think it was important enough to call to say they would be very late. This was it. I called back, having lost all confidence in this company, and told them to forget about the work; to return my deposit and the window I already paid for. I can appreciate that businesses run into problems: that trucks break down, workers get sick, life happens. In my case, the shut off valve cut off the water supply to our second floor kitchen where my sick, ninety-year old mother lives, so I spent two weeks running up and down stairs with dirty dishes and had to move her and her equipment to another room on the Sunday they were scheduled to work so she wouldn?t be affected by the noise. So, yeah, I more than understand that things come up. But you pick up a phone... don?t keep sending emails you never follow through on, especially when a serious problem develops. No stall tactics. It?s the weeks of runaround that I?m really, really upset about. They?re nice people. And based on everything I've read they'd probably have done a great job. But as they always mentioned all the estimates they were doing, my guess is that they overextended themselves.

Originally when I went to the home in North Haledon nj where the work was to be done, no window was involved...the work was for an anticipated marketing of the house and we dealt with the woman of the house. She was NOt in a hurry to do the work and informed her I had scheduled work going out on the calendar. ....No contract was signed until the end of May 2013 at which point she added the window. Window takes approx. 3 weeks sometimes to get made. She also was planning on special ordering doors which takes time...I was not aware of any delays in the door she ordered ..Also,not aware she was ordering special order faucets too. At one point there was an email that we never received from them and instead we spoke on the phone. All along she was not in a hurry and I had to honor contracts that had dates .No dates on her job could be given out in advance in June until materials (window on our end and her spec order items were received. It would not make any sense to book dates until all supplies are available...Additionally, I had vehicle issues for a week and then another week for 2 days so I had to do my schedule re-arrangements . The leak that developed had nothing to do with a contract we had .... I tried to accommodate them around my existing schedule to do the repair but the best I could do was a sunday after a sched job. I told them around 330 pm.on july 7 ...their availability for a REPAIR was not in sync with my job schedule so I was willing to do it on a sunday. ... they calld and wanted to cancel the repair and the contract which were two separate issues...I brought them their paid window and offered to look at the leak...that was at 330 on sunday. I know they have a lot of pers issues and I had truck issues...can only do the best I can. Window and deposit check and official notiofication of contract cancellation was given to customer on July 7.

The original problem I called them for appeared to be missing flashing on the roof. I made an appointment with them for an estimate and they (3 people) came over quickly. They indicated that there was no problem with the roof but suggested I needed gutter cleaning and a few other repairs to the outside of the house. They game me an estimate of $150 which was quite good and I agreed to the work. They needed to reschedule once due to some family issues but they did come back at the rescheduled time. They were starting with the gutter cleaning. The person doing the cleaning got on the ladder but then stopped as he said there were squirrels too close to where he had to work. The squirrels were in a tree on the sidewalk about 8 feet away from his ladder but he felt they were too close. He said he thought I also had a squirrel nest in my attic. Apparently he had had problems with squirrels at other jobs and did not want to work around them. They said they would be back when I got rid of the squirrels. I had to call a pest control company to check for squirrels. There were no squirrels nor had there been any in the attic but it appeared that a bird was trying to build a nest near the gutter. There also was no way to get rid of the squirrels in the tree. By this time the weather was getting colder and since some of the work involved fixing cracked concrete on the house and some damaged aluminum siding I decided to postpone the job. This year I had someone else do the gutter cleaning. It was more expensive than Jim's Handyman Service but the serviceman was not worried about the squirrels. I might call them again if the job is an inside job as they seemed reliable and were very pleasant.
Description of Work: The group came out, looked at the problem I had, indicated it was not a problem but saw other work that could be done. I asked for an estimate which they gave and I accepted. They rescheduled appointment once but came to the house at the rescheduled time. They felt they could not do the work at that time and we were going to schedule again but by then the weather was getting colder and I put the work off.

The customer's job was not Sept in 2012....It may have been earlier that year or the prior year: As myself (Jim) and another worker attempted to do the work off a ladder squirrels from over hanging trees ...including the pregnant female squirrels ...were impeding the work area and were nasty as we attempted to work as it was their nesting time and area .That is a safety issue. Damage was evident from the past...customer was told to get pest control to get a remedy for them. If the squirrels were gone after we were there and went somewhere else by the time the customer got a pest control person out there..i have no control over that. Told her when the squirrel issue was resolved we would come back and do the job. she obviously called someone else.

Jim was able to perform the job quickly. He gave a quote over the phone since it was a small job. He did not try to increase the price at the time of installation.
Description of Work: I recommended Jim to my friend who needed a tv mounted to the wall and some diplomas hung on the wall.

The kitchen counter recaulking looks fabulous. I did have to search around and make sure there wasn't caulk left behind, which I had to clean up. I'm new to home improvement, so maybe it's common to have to clean up after a caulking job, but it seemed like extra work for me. There was some caulk left on my counter, kitchen cabinet, and a little on my stove that I had to clean up. The faucet and tub spout look good. Jim redid the old, messy caulking that was around the old tub spout and shower handle plate, and it looks so much better. He also recaulked around the tub. I was a little concerned about this because I didn't ask to have this done, and certain parts could have been neater. But I think he meant well when he redid this. Although the caulk wasn't in bad shape, it would have needed to be redone eventually. They still kept to their appointment (the Saturday after Hurricane Sandy), even though it was difficult to get here because of downed trees, etc. which I appreciated. Just a minor criticism though - I was sent an email that morning telling me that they would be late. I'm not like most people who have SmartPhones, so I did not get the email and was not aware that they would be late. I had to call them when they hadn't arrived, to find out that they would be late. I might be old fashioned, but I still feel the fastest way to contact someone is to call them. Overall though, I would probably use them again.

the whole countertop was taped with painters tape and the clear caulk was kept in the area was supposed to be....additionally work in bathroom was work that was requested...As far as phone call, we didnt have smart phones either...customer was called to let her know I was running late via phone...was unreachable and used email as a backup to that.
