Description of Work: Most work was completed on-time, but the contractor had to return to repair faulty cement joints. It took about 3 weeks before the joint repair was scheduled and completed (this repair work only took about 2 hours). Not quite sure what took so long to schedule and complete the work, but this delayed other work I had planned. My mistake was paying the contractor ALL of the money before the job was totally finished.

Response from Sposato's Masonry & Chimney Contractor
You were happy at the time and paid us in full. Then a week later you decided you did not like the way the mortar joints came out. We were on another job by that time working until it got dark every night. I was not aware and still do not understand how tuck pointing a couple of mortar joints on the platform of your front steps can hold up other projects you had to do on your house. If I did I would have came by my self to do the repairs if I had to. When we did come back we repointed all the mortar joints on your front steps which was not included in our original quote. We also repaired some lose Belgium around your driveway, tuck pointed damaged mortar joints on both columns on your driveway and waterproofed them to stop any further water damage at no extra cost to try and make up for the inconvenience. Most people reading this who have had nightmares with contractors would say you should be happy we even came back because majority of contractors now a days wouldn't especially after getting paid in full. Then on top of it we did additional work at no extra cost. I'm sorry for any inconvenience we might have caused you. We're a small business and I did my best to resolve the issue and make up for it as well. I will strive to better my self and company as much as possible and value your feedback.

Description of Work: Mike was very professional in his assessment and nature. He used drone to check out chimneys at my house and took photos to show me where problems were. He responded quickly after I signed on and to my knowledge he did a |very good job. Unfortunately, he promised he give me an "after" photo so I could see results of the work, but it never came. Twice promised but none received. He also did some masonry work on my front steps while here and did a nice job on that.

Description of Work: I saw that Sposato was doing masonry work at a neighbors and was doing a great job. I have been looking to get someone to do the crown on my chimney. Mike came over said he would do it with in a few days after they are finished with my neighbor. I was working from home they were on my roof around 12:00pm and finished by 5pm this is about a 8 foot crown to do. They did an awesome job. Very pleased would use them again in a heartbeat. For service render there pricing was very good.

Description of Work: Sposato Masonry replaced three courses of bricks, replaced and repointed cracked bricks as necessary, replaced the chimney cap, and water sealed the entire 40 foot chimney. They also repointed and replaced cracked bricks, water sealed and replaced the cap on the second chimney. The work, requiring scaffolding, was done, on schedule, completely and neatly in three days at the estimated cost. Mr. Sposato allowed a 10% discount when I informed him that I got his name from Angie's List. The total cost was was 2/3 the amount estimated by Chimney Savers for exactly the same work.

We are hiring them. We had some pest control done so we have to wait for that. They are actually going to do a very major project here based upon the results of the minor work that we had done previously. We had a leak in our basement that stemmed from the fact that our gutters were draining into an underground pipe that was running to the street. However the pipe is so old that the roots of the tree in our front yard have grown through the pipe clogging it up causing the pipe to rupture right next to our basement. They are going to be digging up the concrete that is above that underground pipe, relaying about 3 feet-deep of concrete with a new pipe going in the opposite direction and going all the way through the backyard to the street. We are on a corner lot. We are going to have the pipe going in the exact opposite direction and in the process we are also going to be relaying our entire back walkway. I hope we don't need to do foundation repair because if our foundation is damaged, that's going to be a much bigger issue. Our first project went incredibly well. Within a week of us accepting their proposal, they had someone out here doing the work. It was done very quickly. The person was very professional. We look at the work a few months later and it is still fantastic. We have had nothing but positive experiences with them. We are very loyal to the contractors we use. We did search extensively for the minor job we had done and we used that as a test. If we weren't pleased with that we would have gone with someone else for this job. When we find someone whose rates are very reasonable, who does excellent work and who is very responsive to us, we didn't feel the need to go anywhere else. This is the company we did finally choose.

It didn't even start.
Description of Work: I called them three times to set up an appointment to look at the job and get an estimate. No one ever called me back or showed up.
Overall, the work was excellent. It was done promptly, The workers were hard workers and worked from approximately 8am to past 5:30 pm on the first 2 days (Friday April 2, 2010 and Saturday April 3, 2010) and to 4pm on the last full day of work (Monday April 5, 2010). The foreman came at noon on Tuesday April 6, 2010 to remove the lumber from the channel between the wall and the concrete, and to clean-up. Hopefully, the French Drain along with the installation of the prior sump pump will resolve the basement water issue once and for all. However, they did not cover items in the basement with a tarp or plastic cover to prevent mud, cement and dust from getting on them. I'm still cleaning off the furniture, pictures, books and walls, and sweeping the floor, more than a week later. Also, the contractor did not remove the lumber used in creating the "channel" between the foundation walls and floor - a pile of lumber was dumped on my front lawn and still remains there despite several phone calls to remind them to come and take it. Not very professional in that regard. And a green bag containing an old box holding my my late mom's wedding dress was taken from the basement without my permission and placed in the front of the garage near empty water bottles and soda cans. One worker pointed at the bag said "garbage". I said OK, assuming that he was telling me that the bag contained trash from the basement. He placed his empty bottles and cans in the bag. The bag - included the wedding dress within - was inadvertently taken away as trash. If I had been given advance notice when the workers were coming, I would have removed the bag containing the wedding dress from the basement beforehand and placed it in the bedroom areas to avoid such a mishap. Contractor needs to improve his communication, remember to do things, and maintain better oversight of his workers.
Description of Work: Installation of French Drain in basement due to water seepage/leaks from the March 2010 rain storms. A week or so earlier, as detailed in a prior report submitted to Angie's List, the contractor installed a sump pump in basement and drilled holes in one basement foundation wall that was leaking to relieve water build-up due to the March heavy rain storms. Contractor and I decided to adopt a wait-and-see approach regarding a French Drain in all or part of the basement - observe the next rain to see if water came into the basement and its location. Didn't have to wait long - a few days later it rained and water entered the basement around the base of foundation walls, particularly at corners. So the decision was made to install the French Drain throughout the basement. But issues occurred during the installation. I don't mean to single out a particular group, but only mention these points so that other service recipients are aware of these issues and in the hope that the contractor takes steps to ensure that these issues don't arise again: (1) Lack of Communication. I called Mike Sposato on Wednesday March 31, 2010 to do the French Drain. Mike came Thursday April 1, 2010 at around 5pm, and his foreman arrived one-half later so Mike could show and explain to him what needed to be done. Mike said he would call me later that night and tell me whether the work would start the next day Friday (which was Good Friday). Mike never called me. Yet the workers showed up unannounced at 8am on Friday April 2, 2010 to begin. If I had received advance notice from Mike, I would have removed all of the smaller or sentimental items from the basement (to clear space and prevent damage) and taken them upstairs to areas other than the garage (which was already full). I never had that opportunity. (2) Lack of English. The 4 workers who installed the French Drain spoke little or no English, which made it difficult to communicate and interact with me. I would suggest that at least one worker be able to speak English to permit better communication. (3) Moved Items Without Permission, The workers moved items in the basement without asking my permission and without my knowledge. If asked, I would have moved the smaller items upstairs myself and would have told them what and how to stack, especially older furniture. Also, they moved several items without my permission or knowledge from the basement to the garage, and haphazardly threw them on top of things already in the garage. (4) Drank My Soda Without Permission - if asked, I always provide free drinks for workers, especially when there is a lot of dust. But these guys simply helped themselves to 12 cans of soda kept in the garage without asking my permission. And they drank all of my remaining Coke and left the empty case sitting in the garage. (5) No Tarp. Didn't cover furniture and other items in basement with a tarp or other covering. Dust, gravel, mud, etc. wound up everywhere.

Excellent experience. Due to the rains and outside water saturation level in the ground, water started seeping through the foundation floor and walls, particularly at the corners. Also, unknown to me at the time because it was hidden behind several milk crates, a severe leak/steady stream of water occurred in one wall next to the basement bathroom, which flowed to the lower parts of the basement, primarily where the water heater and heating unit are located. Water reached 2-3" deep at those locations, while the rest of the basement had a trickle along the walls and a film over parts of the linoleum floor. I purchased a 12-gallon shop-vac at Home Depot, which would fill up after one minute of use and then emptied into the existing sump-pump. Most of the entire basement flooding could be temporarily vacuumed and drained into the existing sump-pump within an hour. Of course, the water came back into the basement again and the process had to be repeated 4 or 5 times daily until Mike's people resolved the problem. I did not discover the leak in the wall until Monday night 3/15/10. I called the company early Tuesday morning 3/16/10. Mike was in Phoenix at a trade convention. Yet he promptly returned my call and got one of his foremen to come by later that day. Although I was given several solutions by the foreman, we thought the best and easiest route would be to install a new sump-pump on the floor by the leaking wall and drill holes in the wall to drain the water and relieve the water build-up there, and then re-seal the wall. That was performed on Thursday 3/18/10. The solution worked. However, with subsequent rain during the week, water still seeped in through other basement locations, although much less severe and more manageable than before the fix. I met with Mike on 3/26/10 to discuss alternatives, such as a French drain, as well as other fixes for the basement necessitated by the flooding (new cement floor, repair/upgrade of the bathroom, etc.). Mike also inspected the outside of the house and noticed that the sump-pump pipes emptied too close to the house. He wanted the pipes extended farther out so the water pumped out would not re-enter the ground close to the house - he had one of his men make that change later that afternoon at no additional charge. We'll make further decisions during the following week (after the next rain) to determine whether these remedies are enough, or require a French drain throughout the basement or only in the front portion, and what other solutions to implement regarding waterproofing and basement repairs. Mike is extremely knowledgeable. His estimated fees for additional work seem to be fair and reasonable.
Description of Work: Basement waterproofing after severe rain storms hit the area from 3/12/10 - 3/14/10. The company installed a new sump - pump and drilled holes in the foundation wall under floor level to relieve water build-up due to water saturation in the ground

Mike came over to provide his estimate (he was on time). I agreed to the contract. He did not pressure me to do more than what I asked him to do. My house is 50 years old--they had to match the color of the brick and of the grout and they did a good job. The steps look very nice. Mike did what he said he would do, in the agreed time and at the agreed price. He was very polite and professional.

Matt contacted me the same day to respond to my request for service. He was able to come out within a few days to inspect the work requested and offer an estimate. The job went extremely well and we're thrilled with the results. It's a 1000% improvement over the old driveway and it looks great thanks to Mike and his very professional crew. It took about eleven days to complete (11/18/2009 to 11/28/2009) which is quite reasonable considering the holiday and the weather. Mike, the owner, had estimated a week but it rained two or three days - so that was right on the money as far as we're concerned. This was our first experience with Sposato Masonry but they came highly recommended by our neighbors so we were very comfortable with them. Also, Mike comes across as being professional, knowledgeable and dedicated to the achieving our vision. We picked Sposato from three competing bids based on the price, recommendations and their willingness to be flexible as we went along so that the project would turn out just the way we wanted it. Also, they only asked for a token deposit on the job which gave us additional confidence in them. Many contractors want a huge deposit before they show up for the first day's work. I much prefer paying progress payments as work is done and materials are delivered to the work site. They showed up right on time the first day and began work by removing the old edging stones. They started at about 8:00 AM and worked until dark every day. Mike's crews are masonry professionals and work very hard with expertise. We wanted a special kind of black Belgian block for our curbs and apron and we had found what we wanted at the stone yard. Mike made three runs for the stone. He got us one type for the curbs and another, stronger type for the apron. He also mixed up a matching mortar for the joints between the blocks which looks great and really makes the whole installation and ldquo;popand rdquo;. They excavated the driveway for grade and alignment and trenched along the edges for the curbs. Forms were placed in the trenches and about 6" to 8" of concrete was poured in. They set the blocks on end in the wet concrete. When the concrete had set, they mortared and pointed the joints. They installed a drain and pipe under the driveway to route rain water away from the lawn. Later on they dug out the apron area and poured 6" to 12" of concrete and set in the apron stones. All of the stones in this project were set in concrete and mortared. Since the apron had not set enough to allow a dump truck to go over it, they wheel barrowed in the gravel from the street to the driveway. That was a lot of gravel. Each day they cleaned up at the site at close of work and left their tools and materials in a neat and orderly manner. During the project we had questions and suggestions as the work went along. Mike was always available to talk with us, answer questions and make changes within the scope of our agreement. He always said that he wanted us to be happy with the way the project turned out. And we are. Sposato Masonry has our highest recommendation and we are already planning our next project.
Description of Work: Overall job was to replace and improve existing 126' long (23' wide tapering to 12' wide) gravel driveway. Remove old driveway edging stones and relocate them in backyard for future use. Excavate the old driveway to make it wider and straighter. Install Belgian block curbing from the garage to the street. Install a 10' by 20' Belgian block fanning apron at the street. Install drains to improve water runoff during storms. Fill in the driveway itself with new 3/4" compacted gravel. Relocate excavated soil along curbs to improve grade and drainage.

They were responsive, punctual, pleasant to work ,and did a very good job.
Description of Work: They put in a stamped concrete patio, redid my back steps, redid the apron on my driveway, and redid parts of the sidewalk.
They finished the job when promised, which was important since I had other contractors coming to replace windows and siding. They threw in a few extras for free and even came back months later to check in with us.
Description of Work: Mike and his friendly crew rebuilt my tree-damaged chimney, repaired several areas of sidewalk, rebuilt by front and back stoops, and build a beautiful stamped concrete walkway in the front of my house. Everyone in the neighborhood has come by to compliment their work. They were friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us a fair price. I highly recommend them - go to brickmen.com and ask for Mike!

They did the job much cheaper than anyone else that we had gotten estimates from. We talked to about five other companies before we hired them. We are completely happy with the chimney work and the work the did with the Belgium blocks.
