i sent a message on Angie's List, June 10,2016 for a door installation service. I knew my turnaround date for service might have been an issue. However, to receive no response at all to my request to this date is unprofessional.

When I receive a message on the Angie's List message board, I am sent an email notifying me I have a message. I went back in my history on the board and find no message from this individual. Additionally, I went back in my history of emails and see that I got 2 messages on the board on that date, neither was from this person. I even checked the week prior and the week past and no record of this message so I have to assume I Never received it. Please understand before you blast me, some times in this technological world, things happen. Let's all give each other the benefit of a second call to see if there is a reason for no response. That is what I always do, and, in the event that happens and I do not respond, feel free to vent what ever feelings you have towards me.

Steve did a fantastic job with our new steel door, work was done neatly, quickly and done to our expectations and more. The trim around door is snug and secure. There was a lot of rotten wood that was removed and the materials used were the best you can buy for preventing water damage. We will definitely hire him again for any future work we would need!

Steve was very skilled and did a great job. The shelves and poles were accurately and properly installed. He explained to me everything that he was doing, and how it was going to be done. He made sure that there were no pipes or vents that might have been punctured behind the walls. He made good suggestions that I never would have thought of. The shelves and poles are very sturdy. Would definitely hire Steve again. Also, he's a very nice person.

He came up with a solution that did not require having to take apart the closet shelving. His first visit was at no charge to see the scope of the work. And then a week later he performed the job, which took maybe an hour. He explained the options and communicated with me along with way. I was very happy with the job.

- Arrived on time. - Professional demeanor. - Had several things for Steve to look at. Most repairs could not be performed during his visit because he either didn't have the required tools or needed extra parts. - Steve charged $205 for about three hours of his time which included small talk, estimates, and the time it took him to repair two doors that wouldn't latch properly. I felt that this was an extremely poor value. - Steve was to follow-up on additional work but did not call back.

Unfortunately, what the customer forgot to report was he had his electrician come at the same time. When he couldn't figure out which line was feeding some receptacles he asked if he could shut the power in the house for about 15 minutes. This turned into over an hour so I had to repair the doors without the use of my power tools. Then when I wanted to go on to the next task, the customer had gone out to pick up some supplies for the electrician and did not return for 35 minutes. As far as being unprepared, customer told me he had a piece of wood to install by a step, and he gave me a 12 X 12 piece of oak. What he needed was a piece of molding but did not have any. He also wanted a sash on his back door, but wasn't sure if his wife would like it,so, he opted not to have this done. When I go out on "list repair" jobs, it is very difficult to know what to bring and when a customer tells me they have the supplies, I expect them to know what they need. If they don't have the right products, I can't always make the repair. I'm sorry the customer was disappointed, under the circumstances I did the best I could. I would suggest to the members: When you have someone scheduled to do work in your homes, try not to schedule another service person at the same time. Many times we conflict with one another to just get in the other person's way, slowing one or both of us down.

Steve complained about all of the projects I asked him to do, which resulted in them taking longer than expected. His quoted prices were good, but he charged me for every second he was present, including the time he spent complaining and telling me about the other (more important?) jobs he's working on. He also initially miscalculated the amount by 1/2 hour in his favor. The work was of fine quality.

Steve came when he said he would, explained everything well (including arranging to order door and other supplies from Home Depot for him to pick up), followed instructions and consulted appropriately. His helper Curtis was also courteous, thorough and professional. All work was done as requested and directed. Hourly payment arrangement was fair and appropriate.

When I was asked to find a General Contractor to do some work at our office, I was, to say the least, a little apprehensive. I started my search in the yellow pages first. Big mistake. There were 3,327 names to choose from but no reviews to compare. Great. Now what? Then it dawned on me ? Angie?s List! I joined last year and thought this would be perfect ? and it was. That?s how I found Steve Fried, General Contractor. I read his reviews and was definitely impressed. I called Steve and we arranged to meet. My first impression was that he knew what he was talking about and he came across as extremely knowledgeable and forthright. He spent about an hour and a half at our office that day so I was able to show him everything that needed to be done, replacing sheet rock, spackling, painting, floor tile replacement, ceiling tile replacement, etc. In a few days Steve sent me a quote and we hired him. He did the work in the time frame he estimated and did an absolutely fabulous job. Everything looked phenomenal and we were extraordinarily happy. Would I recommend Steve Fried ? without hesitation. One of the nicest people I?ve met in a very long time. So much so, I asked him for a bunch of his business cards to hand out at work and I would hire him in a heartbeat to do work at my own home. If you don?t hire Steve, you?re making a big mistake!

Steve was very prompt. We had initially called him to show that the walls were sweating. He opened up the walls and found that there was hardly any insulation or that the type of insulation used was probably the cause of the same. We got the town's permit and basically he started off the next day. Opened up the walls, set up the battes, got the initial apprval from the town engineer. Proceeded to finish up the dry wall fixing, painted the same and had it ready for us within like two weeks or so. (2 weeks because of the inspection ) Overall happy with his promptness.

Steve Fried and his assistant, Curtis, were excellent. I called Steve and he was able to stop by the next day to give me an estimate as he was working in the neighborhood. I needed work done in my laundry room and he recommended some safety upgrades that I was not aware that I needed and very much appreciated. They replaced the outside dryer vent and the plastic flex hose on my dryer with a metal vent. They installed the outlet box for the dryer on the wall and installed a large shelf above the washer and dryer, They also installed a vanity, granite top and faucet and leveled the washer so it no longer ?moves? around. Steve and Curtis did a great job and I would highly recommend them and plan to hire them again for other projects.

I appreciate the great review from June. One point to clarify: We did not "install" the outlet box to the back of the dryer, we simply secured it to the wall, as the last people who worked on the dryer left it hanging and unsecured. No electrical connections were made by me. Electric work needs to be done by a licensed electrician in the state of NJ. I strive to give my customers 110% service, as quality and service is my number 1 priority.

Searched Steve on Angies list and contacted him. Steve was prompt in responding over Angies list messaging. Called me right away. Showed up less than 20 minutes later. Figured out the problem in no time. Explained the problem to me. Advised me on the available options. Since we had just moved into the house, he recommended we take time before we spend big bucks - which we thought was very sincere and real. Enjoyed the experience. Steve is on my favorites list on Angies list now...

Steve is a very busy person and I am still waiting for a written estimate on the bathroom flooring, as promised by him. Depending on the estimate & how soon he can start , (That is if he has proper insurance coverage to work as a handyman). Never used a .handyman for anything before. Hopefully, maybe a learning experience for us? I may not be accurate about the date Steve came here. He came on a wednesday - dont know whether it was March 4th or 11th;. he came with his friend or co-worker. Everything else is accurate. No news from Steve since we saw him last . Wish him well, whatever he may be doing. Nayaks
Description of Work: Steve came after 2 months of initial contact or sign up. The initial sign-up was for a attic ventilator replacement - he wasn't sure there are ventilators available for 1960 houses anymore. In the meantime, our half-size bathroom developed toilet problems and when the plumber was here; he diagnosed the problem was also with the bathroom floor. There had apparently been a inconspicuous water leak overtime which seeped thru & under the toilet seat itself. In a nutshell. the flooring also had to go. .When Steve came 2 weeks back(I think) I believe he forgot to bring a written estimate for the flooring nor did he write one while he was with us. But he did.replace the ventilator costing less than $13.00 (he went & got it from Lowe's or Home Depot (where we found it on line). He said he could not fix the shaky railing (banister by the front porch) which we had also discussed earlier, since it involves 'masonry' work.

Response from Steve Fried The Handyman
I have to respond. The customer bought my deal, 2 hours of services for $99.00. She sent me a picture of the problem and I explained that older houses used a lot of different size roof ventilating covers. The big box stores carry basically 2 sizes and I told her when I show up, the clock starts. Since this was at the top of the roof line, the customer could not measure it and I told her I could come and measure, however, if I have to find some supplier other than the major retail stores I might spend the two hours looking for it and I did not want to waste her money if I couldn't find the correct size to fit. As she stated, I did not schedule an a date for two months, primarily because there was 10" of solid ice and snow on the ground and I will not go up on a ladder in those conditions. During this period she contacted me with another problem in her bathroom. Again, she sent me pictures and I quoted her a price over the phone. AT NO TIME did she ask me to send her a written quote. She understood what the price would be and on 2 separate occasions told me she wanted me to do the job. I told her if we wait until the weather breaks I could do both jobs at the same time. Once I scheduled the date, I told her I would bring an assistant to help me with the bathroom so that we could complete the job in 1 day as she is 45 minutes from my house and she agreed. The day of the appointment I loaded my truck with all the necessary tools, materials and supplies needed to do the project. I also hired an assistant. When we got there, we first took care of the roof ventilator and luckily it as one of the 2 sizes the big box stores carry. We then proceeded to the bathroom when she says: "What are you doing?" I told here we were going to fix the floor. She responded; "Oh, I just want a written estimate." I explained that was not what she told me on the phone and we came prepared to do the job as I had looked at her photos and gave her the price 2 weeks prior and twice I went over the price and she agreed. She even asked if we could do the plumbing work associated with this but I explained she needed a licensed plumber to make the repair after the floor is replaced. "Well" she said, "I want a written estimate so that maybe I can submit this to my insurance company." She then paid me for the cost of the roof ventilator I had to purchase and gave us a tip on top of that. Just a note: Yes, [Member Name Removed]. I am licensed and insured. If your were concerned about this, you could have asked to see my license the day I was there and I would have shown it to you. I wish you well.

He seemed to be very knowledgeable but he overpriced the job. When he first arrived he was very courteous, but I felt from the second he saw the brick wall we wanted removed, was apprehensive about the job. On site he quoted a guessing price of around $15000 for the work (which we already had another guy tell us $10000) including $2500 to remove the brick wall. I followed up with him a couple days later and said don't worry about the wall, I had it removed for $400+$100 dump fee and he said he would follow up with a quote and ultimately never did. I ultimately decided to go with someone else who has raving reviews and came highly recommended and his parts+labor was less than $5000.
Description of Work: Steve evaluated the job and claimed he would provide an estimate for some work we wanted to do including removing a brick wall, new trim, doors, tile in laundry room / bathroom, painting, etc.

It went very well. The walls had been papered and, in most areas, had been installed without sizing. This caused the drywall top coat of paper to tear and shred went removed by steamer. Steve dressed these areas out then spackled the whole wall area. Once that cured he primed then painted the walls and they came out beautifully. In the area if the cabinets it was necessary to remove then reinstall the molding for access. We are very pleased with all of the work which he performed and would definitely use his services again.

Steve and his co-worker were very professional, respectful, and trustworthy. They did quality work in a quick fashion and worked with us on the schedule to coincide with receiving the new faucets and our work schedules. We were very satisfied with their work and would use them again without question.
Description of Work: In two days Steve, with a second person on one day, restored plaster board in bathroom and garage ceiling which had been cut out due to a leak in a pipe in the wall. The ceiling board was very heavy making for a strenuous job. He had to remove the toilet to access the bathroom wall, which he reset after completing the wall and painting it. He changed a faucet and changed internal cartridges in two other faucets. He did a few little extra things and advised us on how to handle some other things.
