My furnace was working intermittently. Occasionally would not come back on. Temps have been below freezing overnight so it was important to get this fix as soon as possible. I scheduled a next day appointment. Rick arrived with in the given time frame. He was friendly and professional. Turns out my thermostat was bad. Rick installed on new thermostat and heat was running again. I am pleased with the service.

Rostron sent an estimator to remove and install an air/heat (HVAC) unit in my home. He was punctual. He arrived about 5 days later with 2 installers at exactly 8:00am. He introduced them, and they worked all day until 5:30pm. They were quiet, polite, and very neat; They left the area as they found it. The following day, the estimator came back and scrutinized their work carefully to make sure it was done properly. After he and I were both satisfied, we signed the papers. I felt like I was in good hands!!

I went to start up my home A/C for the first time for the season last week and found that it was not making cold. I called an A/C tech that I had dealt with two years prior. He came out the next day. I was out of Freon ,he added about a pound and used his Freon sniffer to narrow down the leak at the condenser unit where the piping comes into the condenser. The unit is 11 years old. He gave options of replacing the unit, both outside and the inside coil. I thought that ridiculous for a unit of that age and condition. He came up with an option of adding a sealer that would plug up the leaks and get me through the season. I decided to try that, but he did not have the sealer and would have to come by the next day. In the mean time, I decided to take the panel off and do some leak checking myself. I pinpointed the leak at the dryer filter with some soapy solution. It is the only steal part in the area, pretty rusty, and sitting at the bottom of the condenser unit in a puddle of water that remained, because the drain holes at the bottom of the unit were clogged Ok, problem figured out, I called him and told him to forget the sealer, probably about $100 plus, and to just bring a dryer filter, do the swap out, and recharge at the $40 per pound R-22 that he quoted me. All fine and good, but he couldn't make it back for that job until the next week. I told him to hold off and I would have to get someone out there a little quicker. I checked AngiesList and came up with Tom Rostron, called them and they would come out after the week end. They quoted an $87.50 service call that would be credited to the repair. All Fair. Then, as I was reading the reviews of Tom Rostron, I read a review of the ridiculous rate of R-22 "The price was $178 for the 1st lb and $130 for each " .Before the appointment I called back to check their rate per pound of R-22 Refrigerant. They would not tell me on the phone and said that the tech would tell me after he got there. I said that I did not want to pay the service call fee if the rate was too high. They said they do not give prices over the phone, that's the way it is. I said "Cancel the appointment and I will be relaying this to Angie's List." Is this company that money hungry that they either gouge you for Freon of collect their $87.50. Well their greediness cost them this service and any future service from me. To all of you other costumers, a little knowledge can go a long way. Check the Freon prices before you commit to a contractor. There is quite a variation in pricing. For the 10 pounds of Freon that my unit takes, that could be a big savings.

Thank you for taking the time and fill out a review for our company. This review speaks for itself. Tom Rostron Co employs 100% Nate certified technicians. Unfortunately without having our certified techs in front of the system we cannot provide a proper repair quote. We charge 87.50 for a "proper" diagnostic, and apply 100% of that to the repair. We can not trust the opinion of a different contractor, or the homeowner to tell us what the problem is. Unfortunately some of our less qualified competition has led customers down the wrong road, and Tom Rostron Co could not endorse the recommended repairs of our competition. When a homeowner calls and wants a quote over the phone we can obviously not provide them with a proper one considering they are talking to a "customer service representative." Tom Rostron co performs over 40 service calls per day and if we started quoting prices over the phone our customers would be losing the added benefit of having a skilled technician in front of the unit. What would happen if we quoted 500 dollars and when we arrived it was 600? Would you be upset? I would. Would you then perform the repair? Maybe. We use National average flat rate billing policies here. All our prices for our repairs are given up front before any work is performed and our repairs are guaranteed! In this case what if that was not the only leak? Without a proper leak check how would you know? Im sure when the refrigerant leaked out you would call right away and demand warranty service for the repair you self diagnosed. As for our "greediness". We have 2,756 customers under our preferred maintenance plan, and over 10,000 in our data base. We are family owned by a Father and son team. All of our employees are locals, and we still have our first employee we hired 24 years ago. Our business practices might not be for you, but your way of choosing a contractor on the price alone will continue to provide you with the guy who can be there next week. In closing I hope your unit finds itself in running condition soon, and I am sorry our team could not meet your needs. We will continue to bill on a flat rate, and provide our customers with a superior experience, (not the cheapest).

Company is awesome, has very reliable staff, professional service, I had them convert my existing Oil furnace to Natrual Gas. They removed the old system, and installed the new system. They were quick, clean and professional... and the installation... the sheetmatal work was perferct. The install is very clean. I also had them service my fathers HVAC system he had issues and they diagnoed and replaced the bard part all in the same day to ensure he had heat!!!! Great Company wouldnt go anywhere else...

the serviceman showed up right on time and was friendly. what impressed me was that the serviceman wore boot covers over his work boots when he came into the house so not to dirty the inside. He also never tried to pressure sell me on a new unit, which does need to be replaced, but informed me an option when my unit does go to get a higher rated unit. He also showed me how to program my thermostat that i could never get working right.

The maintenance itself went fine. The tech checked the unit, replaced the filters, etc., just as they have for years. My A/C unit is only 11 years old but has had a slow leak for the past 4 or 5 years. Tom Rostron Co did the original installation as well. They've never been able to locate the leak so I've just had them recharge it as needed. This year the tech quoted me what I thought was a very high rate for R22. He estimated the total cost would be about $700 to recharge the unit with 3 to 4 lbs of R22. The price was $178 for the 1st lb and $130 for each additional. That was supposedly the price for "good" customers (I've been with them for about 15 years at my business and home). I told him to hold off. I checked around and found the rate for the refrigerant alone was at least 2 to 3 times higher than anyone else quoted. I had another company do the recharge and they also checked and FOUND the leak. Including the service call to the other company I paid less than half what Tom Rostron Co would have charged me for the R22 alone. I cancelled my annual maintenance plans as well since I also found their $192/yr is also high compared to others. What I find most disturbing though is how they tried to severely overcharge me for R22 when I've been a customer for so many years.

I do have to explain what happened on your call and tell you we are very sorry for the price of our refrigerant. Let me start by saying some mistakes were mad by us. We constantly update our national flat rate pricing when we purchase products such as refrigerant. This past year has been very difficult to the R-22 due to the governmental phase out of the product. After researching your bad review of our company i discovered that the last time we purchased R-22 it was in the fall of 2013. At that time our purchase price was 105% more than it is today. Trying to avoid running out of the product due to the "scare" we purchased 2 pallets, which we are still picking through today. Tom Rostron Co has reviewed our policy on pricing refrigerant and will now use the current industry pricing from a local supplier to update our pricing weekly. Our current pricing as of 6/5/2014 is $65.19 per pound for our contract customers. As for the price of our Maintenance plan, we provide a top of the line preventative maintenance , not just a clean and check. Unfortunately our industry is plagued with company's who will advertise ridiculously cheap clean and checks to get in the door and use that to sell you additional services. I understand your lack of trust in our services after this bad experience, and would appreciate the opportunity to earn your business back. Diagnosed problem to be one of two things. They would only charge a flat rate, not time and material. Wanted $980.00 to install a $200.00 valve, which I installed in a half hour. They wanted $340.00 to install a $45.00 ignitor which I installed in 10 minutes. Most of their competition do the same thing. I did not want to pay the flat rates so I paid $130.00 for the diagnosis. Unfortunately, their diagnosis was wrong, so it was a complete waste of time and money. I have not bothered to call them since I did not have them do the repair.

Tom Rostron co. as well as most other quality companies bill the customer based on a flat rate. This method of billing allows us to quote you and your neighbors the same price for similar repairs. The best reason for this pricing is an up front price. NO SUPRISES. Some times a valve could take 3 hours to replace sometimes 1 hour to replace so if we tell you its 95 per hour the next question is usually "well how many hours is it going to take?" Not every technician is going to approach the problem the same way so if you get technician A instead of technician B should I charge you more for the repair?. If our technician has to go get the part do you pay the full rate for his drive time? What if he gets caught in traffic? That could get expensive. Tom Rostron Co. has done "Flat Rate" pricing for 22 of our 25 years and most of our customers prefer to know what the charges will be up front and choose a company that will back it up. As for what we charge. We are not 1 guy in a van. We are 28 local people who are dedicated to bringing our customers the BEST possible service around, not the cheapest. Running a reputable contracting company is not cheap. Aside from the technicians hourly rate, gas to and from your home, vehicle insurance, payroll taxes, business taxes, overhead expenses such as employee training, uniforms, medical insurance, warranty coverage on your call, 24 hour live customer service, etc. We also use quality parts on all our services. we are here to assist our customers 24/7 365 days a year. And that's not cheap. We are however not for everybody. Some customers do want basic highly discounted services, and to install their own parts. As for our service call fee we are happy to announce a great change in our policy. We charge 87.50 for all our diagnosis charges. No matter what the time for diagnoses 15 minutes or 2 hours, its still just 87.50. Night or day. Even on weekends.. If you do choose to go with our company for your repair we will immediately (on the same ticket) credit you the diagnosis. you will know your repair quote upfront, and we guarantee it. As for the claim of mis-diagnoses. Our technicians are ALL Nate certified, and some are even BPI certified. These are the top certifications in our industry, and are recognized as the best. We have an extensive in-house training system and are always striving for better. But they are still humans and can make mistakes. If a mistake was made I would be happy to talk that over with you and discuss your repair quote. Since this is the first time I am even hearing of your dissatisfaction, I have had no opportunity to make good on our services. Honestly I can say we will continue to charge customers based on our NATIONAL flat rate program so if you do want a parts and material contractor, I suggest you look elsewhere. A thorough inspection was done of the furnace & the flue and the mystery was solved.The odor that we had been smelling was burnt dog biscuits that an unwelcomed guest had been storing there.He cleaned everything out ,put it back together and was on his way within an hour.I forgot to mention the promptness from the time I called to his arrival was within a couple of hours .Given what time of year it is I did not expect a fast response.I would most certainly recommend them and call with any issue that may arise in the future.

I used them through a big deal on Angie's List. He did a good job, but it was two different things. I had a problem with my furnace. They wouldn’t use the coupon towards the problem. They wanted to use the deal towards just the tune-up. I had to end up paying. I had to use the coupon for the tune-up. Then he had to do a separate bill for my furnace problem. It was a little pricey. The guy that came out did a great job. I couldn’t find out what the problem was. My furnace was short cycling. He spent time and he fixed it. I ended up signing up for his service plan where they come out twice a year for the spring and fall to go over the whole heat and air conditioning unit.

We make monthly payments. The price is about $380 a year. They know what they are doing. They are prompt, and their staff is very friendly. I think it is a little expensive, but it's worth it to me because they are good people.
