Description of Work: 9-24-15 Ed & Bob came to clean my flexible air ducts because I had a musty/mildew smell coming from my vents when the air conditioner was running. I told Ed that I have asthma and would the disinfectant they use cause me more harm than good. Ed insisted it would kill all bacteria in the flexible ductwork which is causing the smell and any odor from the chemical would be gone in minutes. Before they started to clean I was questioning the cost of the cleaning. I tried to contact Tom at the Pure Aire office but the phone kept going to voicemail. Ed said if I didn't sign the contract they wouldn't do the work so I signed it since I couldn't get a response from the Office at Pure Aire and told Ed I would dispute the charges later. In preparation of starting the job Ed only sealed the return vents, not the supply vents. They used a filthy Hepa machine and attached it to the vent in my guest bedroom and then alternated to the partially blocked supply vent in the same room. Then Ed went around the house used a wand with forced air to supposedly push any local dust back up thru the ductwork to be captured by the HEPA machine at the opposite end of the house. According to NADCA they are to go from room to room and do the same process which was to take approximately 3-5 hours. When I questioned Ed he said "you can't go by NADCA that would take all day, besides in order to not collapse the flexible ductwork we need to do things differently, NADCA's website is out of date on procedures." During the cleaning Ed was very argumentative rehashing the price I was questioning as well as the procedures for cleaning. Throughout the time Ed and Bob were there, I tried calling the office 4 times and my calls went to voicemail. Ed was on his phone several times and hung up when I asked if it was his office. They were there from 1pm to 2:30pm. There was a lot of dust flying around when they finished and the chemical they used to disinfect the ductwork was very strong and made it hard for me to breathe. Ed assured me that the chemical smell would go away in minutes and that the dust would take 24 hours to settle at which time I should change my air filter. After they left I noticed on my invoice that the date on the invoice was 9-25-15 and was scribbled out and replaced with the date 2-24-15. I called the office again left a message and around 5 pm I got a call back from Tom at Pure Aire who clarified the pricing and then excused Ed's changing the date stating "Ed has problems with dates he gets them mixed up, yet he is good with adding numbers together for the invoice." The new filter I put in was full of dust the next morning and I put a new filter in on 9-25-15. On 9-25-15 I also cleaned off a film of dust that was all over my furniture, pictures, cabinets, shelving everything with a surface. I had respiratory problems for the next few days smelling chemical/charcoal smell. Finally my asthma, coughing and headaches escalated to the point where I had to go the Urgent Care on 9-28-15 for antibiotics and steroids. I called several times to Pure Aire (856-205-9000) about the chemical/charcoal smell I did not get a call back. I called my HVAC person and told him the problem. He said flexible duct work is hard to clean and told me his business partner knows the owner of Pure Aire, Vince Croscilla Jr. And then in 24 hours I finally got a call back from Vince. He sent 2 new guys to check on my issue. They came in with flashlights shined them in my return vent in the hallway and said the other guys did a good job, we don't smell anything, they went in the attic pulled out my filter shined the flashlight in my unit and said "it looks clean in here, too, don't know what you are smelling". I told the men "how can you smell a thing when you both reek of cigarettes." Their response to me was to open the windows and get my rugs cleaned. I told them that chemical/charcoal smell wasn't there before Pure Aire stirred up the contents of my air ducts. After they left, I called Pure Aire got voicemail. Vince called me back after a few hours then he said if I paid for an Air Quality Testing company who he approved of and were able to prove that the Chemical/Charcoal smell which has made me ill was caused by his company he would pay for the testing and consider refunding my money but he warned me the cost of Air Quality Testing is around $600. If they couldn't prove it was his problem I would be stuck with the $600 and no chance of refund. Before I would do that I told Vince I need a copy of the MSDS for the Chemical that was sprayed into my air ducts and HVAC unit. He said he would have one of the girls in his office email or mail it to me. I never received the MSDS. I left several messages over the next week and never got a call back. Since then I have been to Urgent Care again on 11-18-15 and went to my Family Doctor on 11-28-15. I have been on antibiotics and steroids 3 times since 9-24-15. My Family Doctor said "You wasted your money on air duct cleaning you can't clean flexible duct work due to all the nooks and cranies. In order to get rid of the irritating smell, you need to replace your current duct work with sheet metal." Since both my HVAC guy and Family Doctor said you can't clean flexible ductwork, why would Pure Aire knowingly agree to clean flexible duct work. Also the NADCA website showed an air duct cleaning on sheet metal duct work not on flexible. I feel I was taken advantage of by Pure Aire and paid $638.29 for respiratory infections and compromised air quality. I have been suffering from respiratory problems since the initial cleaning using inhalers to help me tolerate the air quality in my home. I have been working extra hours to save money to be able afford to replace my duct work and have not been able to report this atrocity sooner

Response from Pure Aire Professional Duct Cleaning
First, I would like to thank you for your business and I apologize that you were not happy with our service. We have been in business over a decade and as you can see from other reviews, we care about our customers and our company's reputation. We feel we have done all we can for you and feel like you were just looking for a free service. On your initial call, we noted in our system you had difficulty breathing and have been to Urgent Care. The reason we note this is so we can take extra precautions during our cleaning process. The service was completed on 9-24-15 and the date on the invoice was written incorrectly; this is the only mistake, in which we will accept responsibility. We did tell you about the error on one of your numerous calls to our office. I would like to point out we do not use a contract. Our invoices are signed after the service is complete and you are 100% satisfied. When you called in and complained about the service we offered to have a technician come out and re-inspect the work. We did as promised and sent another crew out to inspect the ductwork. While there, they inspected the ductwork and showed you there was nothing inside in which you agreed. I referred you to NADCA standards 5.0 overview: All components within the project scope shall achieve, at minimum, the level of visibly clean or the specified method of cleanliness verification. Another area that you are questioning about the flexible ductwork - I refer you to NADCA standards section 4.2.12: Service opening shall not be made in flexible ductwork-which we didn’t do. During our next conversation, we recommended indoor air testing. We did say the cost of the service is expensive and agreed to cover the cost if there was any wrongdoing on our part. You asked where you can find a company to provide the service. We said we can provide a company or you can choose one as long as they were an industry certified Industrial Hygienist. We stated we would like to know beforehand which company you were going to choose in order to confirm their expertise. We did state you would have to cover the cost unless there was wrongdoing on our part. We feel we have done nothing wrong, therefore we feel no need for indoor air testing. We know this job was completed to NADCA standards. We refuse to offer any type of reimbursement to you, which is what we feel you are solely after, beings we did everything to rectify the situation.

They were wonderful. One guy in particular, Vincent, was extremely courteous and caring about my home. He put air fresheners in. He took vents out of the house to scrub them. They did the same thing with the dryer vent, going onto the roof to make sure it was cleaned all of the way through. I haven?t had to dust my house in about 6 weeks. I live in an older development and I don?t think they had been cleaned since being built. My AC system is cooling faster. I have recommended them to other people.
Description of Work: They cleaned all the duct work in my house and my dryer vent. The price listed was for the air vents. The price for the dryer vents was $69.

That turned out fine. I don?t have any real way of judging that other than that last year at this time I had an all new furnace and duct work put in. The old duct work, which was over 50 years old, seemed to be clean, so they must have done their job the last time. The price seemed to be quite reasonable. The never called to follow up.
Description of Work: We had an old duct work system that needed cleaning and that is what they did.
