Douglas Dea Flooring Contractor

Mr. Dea took over 5 weeks to complete a tile job on a kitchen/hallway floor- that should have taken 4 days. In fairness, a relative died suddenly, and wreaked havoc with his schedule for 2 weeks. We completely understood and made allowances. He worked some days 2-3 hours, then stopped. The entrances to the upstairs/bedrooms/ and front/back doors of the house were completely blocked off from access for days on end. Mr. Dea would come in, lay a few pieces of tile, rope off the area, and leave for a few days. He did not come when he said he would come, didn't call, and showed up unannounced. After week 3, it was beginning to wear on all of us. He spread the job out over 5 weeks when it should have taken 4 days at most. Mr. Dea was rude to the other workers in the house that were painting in other areas, often blocking entrances to other rooms for no reason. We tried to alter schedules to enable him to work alone, however, he did not cooperate with the schedules, and often overlapped with other workers. Mr. Dea advised us as to the amount of supplies needed ( tile sq.ft./grout/sealer,etc.). We purchased the amounts he needed, and had them ready for 1st day on job. By the 2nd week, Mr. Dea called and informed us that he was out of grout and unable to complete the job til next week. I asked why he couldn't continue laying the tile, then go back to the grout when it came in. He agreed to this, but didn't show up until a week later. I made 3 supplies run for this guy! I advised Mr. Dea on two occasions, that we ordered and received exactly what and the quantity he requested. If he ran short of supplies, this was his issue, not ours. He was rude and disrespectful. Mr. Dea stated he had over 16 years of experience laying tile, and understood how to "level" floors. Our kitchen floor and hallway floors are extremely unlevel, - in fact the hallway has significant "ramp-like" drop. This could have been alleviated by leveling with tile set/concrete. I expressed this to Doug, and was told "I know what I'm doing". After the 5th week and numerous discussions, we let him complete grouting on the last 3 feet - that had been left to do for over a week....and ended the job. it was a most unpleasant experience. Now I've hired another tile guy to come in and fix Mr. Dea's work : 1) Level the floor in certain areas; and 2) fixing edges where the tile cracked, because there was no concrete board or cement under the tile - JUST wooden Shimmies -like what you'd use in a doorframe. Last week the HVAC Duct guys came in to clean the HAVC vents, and pulled out a hefty bag full of tile bits - seems Mr. Dea was using our ducts as a trash Extremely unprofessional/ no adherence to quality work.-

When he finished the backsplash it looked okay to us. We really liked it. Three months later we started to notice the grout that he installed at the first row of tiles and the counter top was cracking. I did some research why this happened and found out that this is not the right way to finish the job. He should have used caulking that has some elasticity because of movement on the counter. We called Mr. Dea two times and he has not responded. So we have to figure out how to get this grout removed and finished properly. Mr. Dea has not shown professional knowledge of finishing a backsplash or standing behind his work.
