Not well. We selected G Greenwald based on the previous reviews. Fairly impressive and we were hoping he would fit the bill. Briefly - All consideration for his services came to a screeching halt when he made a phone call to his business partner (the siding guy). My wife over heard the conversation - very clearly - regarding our decision to remove the asbestos siding versus covering with vinyl siding. The "siding guy", upon hearing our preference, proceeded to call my wife "a f****** crazy person". What? Needless to say, we will be taking our business elsewhere. I am sure he does some good work, but not here.

Response from G Greenwald Carpentry and General Contractor
Thank you for taking the time to review our company and I apologize for the way this statement may have come across. I want to clarify that the man I spoke with on the phone is a sub-contractor, not a partner. He specializes in roofing and siding. I called to see if he could stop by the job and give his honest opinion on the siding. I had explained the customer was not sure if they wanted to remove the Asbestos siding or cover it. It was late in the afternoon when I called and he was up on a roof. It was 90 degrees (120 degrees on the roof). He was hot, exhausted, and I'm sure he did not want to take a call. His exact response was "is she f...crazy." The reason for this type of response is clients usually do not want to spend thousands of dollars extra to do this type of siding job. By no means did he call her anything. It was a rhetorical question, not a statement like this customer mentions above. He is totally wrong in the review above, using the wording he did. I cannot control my roofers response and it was only an unexpected response. I do all I can to provide my customers honest and professional service and work. I hope the customer will realize what and how he worded his review is wrong and corrects it.

Gary came to the house and gave me a quote for adding a second closet (instead of knocking down a old small closet and rebuilding). It was good advice and I appreciated it. That said, I found Gary a bit...aggressive at times and slightly pressured to make a decision ASAP. That left a bad taste in my mouth, but my friend had used him for work and he really did do a great job there, so I knew I could trust his work. So, I just booked him. While I am glad I did - truly excellent work, good ideas, quick, clean, etc. - I do feel like he charged too much. Anyway, I would still use Gary again because he really does do great work. Just found it a tad expensive.

The work was done very well. The team of workers showed up every day on time and worked through the day, everyday. We are very happy with the experience. They analyzed where the leak was coming from, and fixed the problem better than new. The work that was performed was top notch. We would recommend them to anyone needing home repairs.

It went great. Gary quickly identified the issues with the frozen pipe and fixed it so it wont happen again. The prior contractor I used left a portion of my wall with no thermal break and the pipes froze so bad he had to replace them. Now that Gary fixed it I am sure it wont happen again. He also replaced a faucet, repaired damage in the plaster of a celling and recaulked my bathroom. The faucet looks great and works perfect. The celling looks brand new, and the bathroom looks 100 times better than it did. Good contractors are hard to find. I will have no problem calling Gary again the next time something breaks.

Not a good experience at all. Though, Gary was quick to respond to my call and also visited my home the next day. But that was the end of good impression. His visit last only for about 10 minutes. He looked at the bathroom and without asking much questions to really understand the requirements, quoted a price of $18K to remodel the bathroom. The movement I said that not all items may need to be replaced, he told me bluntly ?I?m not interested in your job?. I was really shocked with that kind of response. I told him that I don't have that kind of budget, to which he said (again in a very rude way) ?why did you call the best guy from Angie?s list then?. He further said, ?if you are looking for cheap, cheap, cheap (yes, 3 times), then start looking from the bottom of Angie?s list and not from the top?. That?s very rude and unprofessional. Won?t recommend him to any of my friends.

Response from G Greenwald Carpentry and General Contractor
When this person called us for an estimate I discussed in detail the proses of my service. I explained that what they wanted to do was not complete enough for us to guarantee a secure and quality job. ,I would have to do the completed bathroom not piece work. I then stated that the average completed bathroom reno from A-Z is about $18000.00 . They had no problem With that so I made an appointment then and there. When I arrived the story changed .They only wanted to do certain things in the bathroom . And they didn't want to spend any thing near that amount that I approx. quoted on the phone conversation. it became a free educational session instead of an free estimate. I thought at that time there was a personality conflict and I was being used for my no how only, and yes I did change my tone. I needed to leave asap and not to waste any more of my valuable time. Buy the way all said and done I most likely would not have had any interest in taking on this job.

This is the second job in which I used Gary. I wanted him to gut the old kitchen and replace or upgrade every component, and if possible add an island. Gary was able to layout a configuration - with an island - and was able to start the work the following Monday. It took a day to remove the old kitchen including the dropped ceiling, and assess the plumbing and electric . We didn't have enough space left in our service panel to accommodate the new circuits we needed, so the electrician had to upgrade the service to 200 amps. The plumbing had to be replaced and the plumber even had to remove a clog in the drain pipe under the house to get good drainage. My wife and I had to choose the cabinets, appliances, sink, countertops and backsplash. Gary handled the scheduling and delivery of those items and of course the windows, flooring, general carpentry items, and waste removal that go along with a job of this magnitude. We also asked him to mount a TV on the wall in the middle of the job, so he had to set up the wall mounting and cable connection. He also fixed some items that were not explicitly part of the kitchen, like a door that didn't close right or molding that was loose in an adjoining hallway. The price includes cabinets, countertops, backsplash, sink, windows, flooring, and new electrical service. Gary finished in the time frame he quoted and made the job as easy as he could for us. He showed up every day on time and transformed a 36 year old kitchen into a modern kitchen we're proud of in three weeks time. I wish I could show some pictures, but I couldn't find a way to upload any in this review page. Gary and his crew deserve an A+, and I plan to use Gary for my next project as well. Update: I was able to upload the pictures on a subsequent page - see below.

Not only did Gary do a great job on the room we originally contracted for, but also picked up on some piping problems when the renovation revealed the bathroom tub and shower plumbing. He corrected the grouting which was badly done from a previous contractor. Gary arrived promptly every morning, worked continuously through the day with no lunch break, and cleaned up before leaving. His electrician, plumber, and helper are top rate. I plan to use Gary in the next few months for our next project, which is remodeling our kitchen. If I could give him an A+, I would. I highly recommend Gary Greenwald.
Description of Work: Gary remodeled a room completely and did some work in the bathroom. Gary gutted a room down to the studs and beams. He put in insulation in the ceiling and walls, installed sheetrock, lights (LEDs), receptacles, windows, registers, doors, and flooring. He also did the painting. He replaced pipes and fixtures in the bathroom shower/ tub and regrouted the tub.

The job went well and was easier then I thought that it would be. Gary show up on time and was able to complete the job in about 6 1/2 hours and clean up was great I did not have to do anything after he left . He set up to have an electrician come on Thursday to put light in the attic and to reinstall the hall light that need to be moved for the attic stairs. Very Happy with my new attic stairs. Plan to have Gary come back to install a stormdoor and closets doors.

Have a ranch style mid 50's home that has had a persistent leak coming out of a recessed light fixture in a soffit box style ceiling in our bathroom for over a year. Since the light fixture was directly in line with our boiler chimney we had assumed the leak was due to faulty flashing or an improperly sealed pipe. After replacing our 20 year old roof in August and having everything freshly sealed we assumed problem was resolved but after having a heavy rainfall in October leak was still there. Roofer came back twice to check seals and found no cause but added sealant around chimney anyway. By now soffit box was heavily damaged and had to be repaired but only after leak had been positively identified and fixed. I found Gary on Angie's List and liked his profile and the fact that he provided multiple handyman services. Emailed him on a Thursday morning with a description of my problem. He emailed back within two hours asking me to give him a call. After speaking on the phone that afternoon he agreed to come to my house 8am Friday to check out the situation. Showed up at 8:00 sharp. It had rained Thursday so I was able to show him exactly where water leak was. I took him up in the attic to show him the chimney shaft and within 90 seconds he diagnosed the problem, not the chimney! The cast iron vent pipe coming out of the roof was coupled to a PVC pipe that the house's previous owner had installed when they expanded the kitchen. Rain water was pooling at the connection of the two pipes and leaking at the joint which of course was over our bathroom soffit. He said he had an electrician and plumber who he reguarly did jobs with. His plumber would replace the cast iron pipe with PVC, the electrician would take out our old recessed light fixtures and install new LED fixtures and Gary would repair the soffit celing which we agreed I would paint. All three would come at the same time and coordinateso that the job could be finished in one day. I also threw in two smaller jobs that needed to be done. I had a newly installed attic fan that needed to be hooked up and an old corroded metal drain pipe under the kitchen sink that I wanted replaced with PVC. He gave me a ballpark estimate of $2000 give or take for all the work ($500 downpayment/Balance on completion). While still in my kitchen he took out his cell phone to call the plumber and electrician so he could describe the work to them and find their earliest availability. After talking to them he said he could do the job the following Thursday. Gary and his co-workers showed up Thursday morning at 7:30 sharp. While up in the attic checking out the pipe to be replaced Gary noticed an improperly connected bathroom fan vent and pointed it out to me. I told him to fix that too. I left for work at 8:20 as the guys were prepping their tasks. The entire job was completed by 1:00. When I came home that evening and checked on all the work that had been done I was very pleased. Everything was top notch. Final price was $2250 which for variety and quality of work done was very reasonable. Aside from the high quality of work what impressed me most about Gary was how he quickly diagnosed the problems and immediately cooridinated the work crew he required to get the repairs made. I didn't have to phone two or three contractors for each aspect of the job, I called one guy on a Thursday and the following Thursday the work was done. A+ all the way. Highly recomend.

Gary was awesome. He was extremely professional, always on time, and did excellent work in a very timely manner. He was very responsive to our needs, and very accommodating. The damage on some of the ceilings was extensive, and now they are perfect. When the work was done, the rooms he worked in were actually cleaner than I had left them, and everything was put back exactly as he found it. He also provided very good advice and references for other work we need done on the house. Do not hesitate to use Gary for your home improvement needs. Well talk about a horrible first impression. First I emailed this company and I got a fairly quick response. oh but when I finally got Gary on the phone what a different story. I told him where I live, you would think I told him I lived in another country. He said, "Where is that??" "I only do work in Union County". He asked, "so what do you need?" in a very, your bothing me kind of way. Told him I needed a bathroom rennovation/full gut. He said, "Well between the", and rattled off a list of things...it will be $18K. I thought that was highway robbery!!.. I told him that my bathroom was 8x5 AND that we had two bathroom rennovated before, 1 an 8x5 (full gut) and 1 a half bath (not a full gut).. those two bathrooms combined hit about 10K. He told me to call the person that did my bathroom. I then hung up on him.. WOW.. that was not a pleasent experience by any means.. I mean really? How rude.

Response from G Greenwald Carpentry and General Contractor
Here is a siskal and ebert review that I actually needed to settle my attitude for a few days before I made any kind of Rebuttal due to the unkind and not very thoughtful review that was given to me by the Angies list customer. Lets take this one word for word and situation by situation. First ( QUOTE) what a horrible first impression . When any one calls me late after hours and I am in bed sleeping they are going to get a little more than a pleasing attitude. As she said I thought I was from another country. when she told me where she lived and I thought she said franklin n.j. so I did say where is that .I then looked it up and found that it is over an hour away and I don"t service that area. After reviewing this review I see that she said Franklin Twp. I guess I needed a cup of coffee to wake up .My bad I should of prepared for this with a cup on my night stand for this very occasion . Next (QUOTE) I got a fairly quick response, even though she called me 3 days later and still gives me a B rating for response time , mind you I E-Mailed this customer back within 3 mins of the E-Mail that I recieved through Angies List. Wow . I then finally got to the point of asking her what I could do for her, and she told me she needed a fully gutted bath renovation. I explained to the customer in full detail from start to finish on a complete bath re do. I think she needed some coffee the way she rudely answered me. I was only giving her a price as an approx.total price for a fully renovated completed bath room.Mind you this is sight un seen to help give her an idea on how prices can be and or vary . Her response was( QUOTE) not in my world. And then she said, she got 2 complete bathrooms done for $10,000.00 I got so mad by this time I said Call him back then . This person should have called K mart or kreigs list not Angies list.

He came early, worked neatly, and was professional and friendly in his manner. He did a great job and even finished earlier than expected. I looked up all e-mails from March to present, I looked up all the names on my contact list, I went to Angies list message center and all notifications from Angies list.I then went to my appointment book and looked at any of the many hand written appointments that I may have made.I did not even see this members name let alone a appointment. This Angies list member waited almost 4 months to give us a bad review. I checked all my records, and no where do they exist as far as I can see. Maybe they have my company mixed up with the other 20 contractors that they probably called ,but I do not remember the appointment, or the name. Again this member is making this claim from 4 months ago. If I made this mentioned appointment and missed it my full apologies. Why didn't they call me when I was running late like most people would do. Gary Greenwald Owner

Gary was great! He arrived early, assessed what he needed, took a quick trip to home depot, and got the job done. The door was installed perfectly and looks great, which was a relief, considering the original was 60 yrs old and the new one had to be re-cut. While he was here, I mentioned that a mason had flaked out on a small job I needed done - Gary looked at it and it's getting taken care of tomorrow. The bottom line is that Gary answers his phone, does what he says he's going to do, does it well without cutting corners, and still manages to charge a fair price. We'll be doing some extensive work on the house at some point, and Gary will be my first call.

Gary was persistent in calling to arrange a time to do an estimate, and was punctual about meeting me at the scheduled time. It took several weeks to get him in to do the work because he is busy and does the work himself. On the day the work was done, he arrived early and had it done before lunch. Gary was very professional and helpful. Seemed a little expensive, but the quality of the work was good. He estimated the job at an hourly rate, and actual work time was within the estimated hours. When Gary gave me the estimate, I told him I would do the painting myself, so painting was not part of the job. I had to lightly sand the sparkling before I could paint over it. Gary gets a B for responsiveness because he expected me to be available whenever he was. We had difficulty connecting to get an estimate for the work because he would call me in the middle of the day and ask if he could stop by because he was in the neighborhood. Then, after he gave me an estimate and I told him I would like him to do the work, he told me my job was too small for him to schedule. Instead, he told me I needed to wait until he had a few hours available between other jobs, and it didn't look like that would be for at least a week. I told Gary that we needed to work around my work schedule. Two weeks after getting the estimate, he said he had some time available and we were able to synchronize our schedules to get the work done.
Description of Work: Removed water-damaged sheetrock and replaced it. Included spackling but no painting.

Response from G Greenwald Carpentry and General Contractor
I rate this customer with a D . I called her 5 times to make an appointment , she was not available any of those 5 times . She finaly let me come over to look at her job, I told her that she had a time and material job it would be approx. 4-5 hours plus materials. Customer said i have the job that my price was fine, this was on a Friday ,I then said I can do the work on Monday, she said she was not ready yet. I told her that I would call her when I get another opening, mind you that we were in the height of spring booking season. A week later she called me and wanted to know why I have not called her. I told her I was jambed up . I did tell her the end of that week.she said ok. I showed up on time on Friday to do the job and she said that she was going to paint it herself to save some money .I told her that was fine but spackle cant be sanded the same day it needs to dry. Being that she wanted to save money she said she will sand it her self which was ok buy me and I even showed her what to do.Job got done in 3 hours not 5 only charged her for 3 hrs. saving her $250.00. She got a little ballsie to go and then ask for a discount. I am sharing this with you to explain those B's she gave me. To me that is not the way a customer needs to treat a contractor that saved them money and did the job as if it was my own home.

Mr. Greenwald was easy to schedule an appointment with and showed up as agreed. He was efficient, clean and cared about the quality of his work - which was of a high standard. I was impressed that he really cared about not making a mess of any part of the house and left the work area very clean upon completion. He also did some light painting of the areas impacted even though this isn't necessarily his expertise. Overall about a 6 hour project which could have taken much longer.
Description of Work: Repair of 2 walls plus a ceiling of water damaged sheetrock and trim including fixing of metal corner bead, roof and wall areas and around several windows.
