Called a few times and finally got him to call my wife back. Didn't really want to take my job, which was just mudding taping and sanding two whole rooms, wall and ceilings. Told him we found him here on A.L.'s, commented about how yea he knows, its hows everyone finds him. Complained about previous homeowners work, how he had to fix that first before taking on that job. Though he was assured everything would be in place, without typical homeowner gaffe's, I didn't have the time to finish the job myself since we're going away. Said it would be an 8 week wait, if he was going to do the job. Said no thanks and good riddance. Very unprofessional. Said thanks and good riddance. UPDATE: After reading his reply, I'm glad he was too busy to do 3 days work. Hired a true drywall contractor who did it in 3 days, gladly paid them the $1000.

Gary was very responsive to our calls. He always returns phone calls and he is always very neat and respectful of our property.
Description of Work: We needed a portion of the frame of our house replaced. We noticed two areas which we needed replaced. When Gary came, he found another area which needed replacement. We were very impressed with his ability to thoroughly assess these problems. He very quickly repaired and PAINTED the three frame replacements. We have used Gary three times and he has exceeded our expectations every time. He is neat, efficient, and very helpful. I would never hesitate to recommend him.

I had a major water leak where it took 3 plumbers, cutting holes in my ceiling, to find and repair the leaking pipe. Now that my pipe was repaired, I had to find an expert in Drywall, taping etc. I decided it was time to see what "ANGIE'S LIST" was all about and I am glad that I did. From the positive reviews I had read about Gary Greenwald Carpentry, I decided to call Gary and set up the repair. Gary was responsive to my calls and needs, he was punctual, prepared and neat. To quote my wife when she walked in and observed the repaired ceiling, "WOW, did you find a winner on Angie's List." Gary did an excellent job.
Description of Work: I had about 8 holes in my kitchen and family room ceiling from plumbers looking for a leaking water pipe. Gary made even cut outs and then installed, taped and painted the drywall ceiling. Of special note was the fact that my ceiling had a sand finish and Gary did not have that kind of paint with him. He improvised with paint and grout and actually came very close to the texture that was previously there. Now, when I repaint the room, it will be much easier for it all to blend together.

First of all this is one really nice guy to have had in my home. Now, the floor - I thought I wanted a particular color but Gary suggested another vinyl "wood" color. I'm so glad I followed his suggestion/choice because it turned out wonderful. Absolutely beautiful job. Mr. Greenwald is sooooo meticulous, each little thing perfect. Prompt and professional. Price right in line with a job very well done, which I am extremely pleased with. Thank you Gary and Angie's list.

Gary and his team arrived to our home on time. The team set up drop cloths and brought in all the tools they needed for the job. Gary and team got to work and cleaned as they worked on the drywall project. He completed installing the drywall within the specified amount of time and had the room looking as clean as it was when he arrived. The new wall looks great! We couldn't be more pleased with his efficiency and attention to detail. We would definitely hire Gary for future projects in our home.

G Greenwald Carpentry and General Contractor was unable to do the work I needed, but gave me the name of another contractor. Gary took time out of his busy schedule to contact that contractor on my behalf that evening, and the other contractor immediately got in touch with me at 8 o'clock the next morning. Gary is wonderful. The weather was turning cold, and the company was obviously booked up. He asked me what I needed to be done, and I told him that I was disabled and I had three holes in the roof and I needed a whole new roof. I needed siding on one side of my house, the roof to my garage had holes in it and that needed to be re-roofed. He said "I can't take the job on right now, but I'm really concerned about you. Let me give you an associate's name." I took the name and number down and was going to ring them the next day. After the hurricane all the contractors were so very busy it was almost impossible to get them to come out to even do a quote. So, the next morning at 8 o'clock I got a call from the other contractor, his associate, who told me that Gary had called him the night before, told him what needed doing, and I can handle the job if you'd like me to come out and give you an estimate. He was out by 8, 8.30. I would highly recommend both of these contractors!

After hurricane Sandy knocked a tree into our house, we were left with moderate damage to the roof & siding and some interior water damage to the drywall. Once insurance processed our claim, we called for a few estimates from Angie's List recommended contractors, Greenwald Carpentry being one. Gary was incredibly responsive, visiting at a time that was convenient for us and providing a reasonable written estimate on the spot. When we called to accept his bid on the job, he was ready to get started the very next day. He and another worker arrived first thing and didn't stop until early afternoon when the roof and siding were completely finished -- and just in time for snow the next day. He was able to use identically matching shingles and repurpose the aluminum siding rather than replace it with potentially mismatched vinyl pieces. One would never guess how or where the house was damaged, the repair was seamless. He and two workers came back each of the next two days to repair the damaged drywall and repaint the room that took the tree hit. Again, they worked efficiently and left our house looking better than ever. Gary is an experienced and honest professional. He is saved in my phone for the next time we need an ace carpenter.

Gary was very prompt and attentive and assessed the situation accurately. He contacted the plumber immediately. The plumber was very responsive. All the work was completed within four hours.
Description of Work: We called him because a pipe needed to be replaced in our bathroom. The drain kept backing up and it could no longer be snaked. Gary returned our call promptly. He actually called us twice because we did not respond to him the day he called! Gary came to our house the next day (we called him on a Friday and he came on Saturday) He assessed the situation accurately. He knew exactly where the pipe was in the kitchen ceiling. He referred us to his associate and the owner responded promptly and did an excellent (very neat and clean) job replacing the pipe. I called Gary when it was completed and he was at my house in less than an hour. He did an excellent job installing sheetrock and plastered the ceiling. He is going to return to paint the ceiling for me. His work is meticulous and he even swept the floor when he was done even though there was hardly anything on the floors because he covered the floors but he insisted on sweeping it.

Punctual, clean, and efficient. We contacted Gary to provide a variety of services. Some related to storm damage and others general maintenance. Gary was available immediately to provide a consultation and arrived on a Sunday am to review the various jobs. He agreed to complete within the week. Given the broad range of jobs (some outside some inside) Gary performed work that overlapped with other similar work he was doing in the area. Gary performed work on two separate days showing up promptly, and spending no more then a couple hours each time quickly and proficiently completing the jobs we discussed. On the first day he worked mainly on the roof, repairing shingles from storm damage, replacing aluminum siding which he had all the equipment for, and re flashing my chimney which was allowing rain water to leak into the 2nd floor. At a pre arranged time Gary came back to finish the interior which included re plastering the water damaged ceiling and wall, and some tile work in the kitchen. His speed was amazing and within hours the wall was spackled and looked like new. We were really pleased with his services and his punctuality and cleanliness were impressive. We look forward to using Gary for additional jobs in the future.

Gary is a first class guy who knows his stuff. I called him Thursday and the work was completed on Saturday. I had a couple of bits and pieces for him to do around the house, including installing a utility sink and backsplash, replacing faucets and hardware in the bathroom, installing a walter filter system and other general handyman work. He arrived early, did a professional job and did extra where he saw it needed it. I would highly recommend Gary.

Thanks to Hurricane Sandy, we lost power for 8 days which resulted in our sump pumps overflowing. We had some mold remediation work done which resulted in the removal of 4' of sheetrock (from floor up) around the areas closest to the two sump pumps we have catacorner in our finished basement (including a 1/2 bathroom). We also had to have all the carpeting removed. After getting two other estimates, we discovered Gary on Angie's list and based upon the reviews and some information on his website, we reached out to him to see if he would be willing to come to our area and give us an estimate. He was very pleasant on the phone and accommodating. We spoke on a Tuesday and he came for the estimate the next evening. He was very thorough in his assessment and he asked all the necessary questions without wasting anyone's time. He was open enough to provide some opinions (from this woman's point of view, these were always welcome) about some other work we were having done, for example, on our sump pumps. At the conclusion of his assessment everything was clearly and legibly laid out in his estimate. Overall, he gave us a very good feeling as to his professionalism, availability and ability to do the job. He wasn't the cheapest estimate but we felt that he would give us the best product. As it turned out, his services were worth every penny. Gary and his assistant, Pedro, started the job early the next morning. By end of the day that had the area insulated and sheetrocked. The next morning (8 am appears to be the standard) they were back at it again sanding and spackeling. Gary told me up front the timeframe for the job (he only works one at a time) would be seven days and he was correct. He and Pedro worked all day Thursday, Friday, half day Saturday and all day Monday when they were essentially finished. This equated to seven man days (2 people on one day = 2 man days). They allegedly took lunch breaks however they were off the job for such short periods of time I am not sure they had time to chew! I added to the original job by asking Gary to install a toilet and pedestal sink and tile the floor of the 1/2 bath and he was able to accommodate us by doing this the next day, Tuesday. Throughout the job, he was always willing to impart knowledge about any area asked of him. He also pointed out other things that needed to be done around the house (reattach siding, reconnect gutter, etc...) which he took care of and gave advice on things like the proper toilet to purchase, adding a dehumidifier to help with the humidity in the basement, and any other areas that we needed assistance in addressing. It's the little things that made the job great...each day, Gary and Pedro left the work area cleanly swept and tidy... Gary was willing and able to discard our old toilet and bar sink for us. The new tile floor in the 1/2 bath really dresses up the space and the new storage room is a wonderful addition and blends naturally with the rest of the space. We have used contractors found through Angie's List before and, by far, Gary was the best. Professional, punctual, approachable, accommodating, honest and someone who takes great pride in what he does. As he likes to say, he takes care of his customers. It is so true. I welcome future opportunities to work with Gary and highly recommend him.
Description of Work: Refinish basement space: *Sheetrock 4' from floor where needed *Reinsulate 4' from floor with R13 Foil Craft *Paint all sheet rock walls (to match Benjamin Moore paint on remainder of walls) *Trim 3 doors *Disconnect bar sink and cap *Build storage room with door and trim with 2X4 platform on both sides *Remove a mirror Additional Work: *Install previously purchased toilet *Re-install pedestal sink *Tile and grout basement 1/2 bath floor

Description of Work: We had had a plumbing issue that was resolved but they did not repair the wall behind the vanity in the bathroom. I found Mr Greenwald on Angies list and called. He responded quickly. He came by and gave us an estimate. He was back 2 days later to do the work. He did the sheetrock behind the vanity and installed the tiles also . He caulked around the vanity and he also caulked the tub. He also fixed a problem with the sink stopper.

The job went well and was completed in a timely manner.
Description of Work: I needed to have someone trim 5 interior doors due to installation of new carpet. I obtained Gary's name from Angie's list and called him on a Friday. I left a message and he returned my call within hours. I described the job. He explained that he charged by the hour. I asked to be put on his job schedule. He called back and said that he would be out on Saturday between 10am & 11am. He was on time and after I showed him the doors to be cut, I asked him to look at my overhead garage door that had gotten bent the previous evening. He immediately looked at the door to determine he could be fixed. He worked quickly and knowledgeably and was able to almost completely rectify the damage that had been done. He saved us lots of money considering what the garage door people would have charged to just come out. He then proceeded to fix the doors.

He came out for an estimate and he was quite arrogant. He was very confident, but it came across as arrogance. He wanted to do things his way because he said he was the professional. If the job was completed his way he didn't want the job. So I didn't call him back, I am sure he does good work, but it should be how the owner wants things done not the way he wants things done. He let you know he has lots of business so he can be selective with the jobs he takes on..

Response from G Greenwald Carpentry and General Contractor
Members use Angie’s List to find quality contractors that won’t misguide or suggest unnecessary services. As reflected in my other reviews, I provide quality work, professionalism and want to please every customer. This customer had an image in her mind of how she wanted the job done. Certain things could not be done because of her individual circumstances and layout. I made professional suggestions and gave her my opinion on how the job could be done in the most professional manner. In regard to “being selective”, due to Hurricane Sandy relief I am working 7 days a week. It was still important for me to take the time to provide this member with a free estimate. Sadly, this was interpreted that I have lots of business and can be selective. This isn’t how I operate my business.

Mr. Greenwald was very punctual, true to his estimate, worked quickly, efficiently, yet carefully, and demonstrated extraordinary skill. Interestingly, estimates I had obtained from other contractors clearly intended to needlessly expand the scope of the repair by assuming complete consumer ignorance on my part regarding ceramic tile jobs in general. But, this was absolutely not the case with Mr. Greenwald, who completed the job based on the parameters I had set, and knew exactly how to do it, and clearly articulated his plan of action beforehand. He immediately took precautions to thwart the potential of a "cascading tile effect" from above, and much to my relief, kept the original cement "mud" intact as a usable substrate. He then sealed other problem areas that I had not thought about--which contributed to leakage. I am equally pleased with the outcome and the speed at which the "spontaneous" kitchen job was completed. Mr. Greenwald's professionalism, skills, and personableness was such that I would not hesitate to contract with him again for totally different kinds of professional services. I am confident in saying this because I can see that he is able to think his way through problems and tasks, much as I would imagine an engineer does. He is a professional who would not promise to build a suspension bridge if his expertise were in chemical engineering.
Description of Work: Several ceramic tiles in our 1934 bathroom shower needed to reset. This involved removing tiles--which have been out of production for decades, and were attached to wire lathe with a cement-type mix--and reattaching them to two shower walls. After the bathroom job was completed, he noticed some large granite tiles missing in the kitchen. He inquired if I wanted to address that before he left, and I agreed.
