Did not get the job done by Certified Craftsmen.
Description of Work: I needed a chimney repaired or replaced. I asked for an estimate and was told I needed a chimney inspection that cost $189. This money would be subtracted from the cost of the chimney repair. I agreed because the contractor told me of two ways I could repair or replace my chimney. In a few days, I received my estimate but there was only one estimate. It was an estimate to remove my chimney and replace it with a stainless steel chimney for $2875. I just wanted the chimney replaced, he said it would cost about $700 but he never sent me the estimate for that. He said his boss did not want to replace the chimney because I have solar shingles and they may get ruined. I got 3 other estimates and not one mentioned a problem with the solar shingles. I think that $189 was a ripe off.

I called CertifiedCraftsmen to inquire about my "broken" gas fireplace. After giving my info to the receptionist Mike called me within 1 hour. After I described to him the problem I was having with the fireplace, he gave me a couple of options. 1 was to try and fix it myself if I was comfortable doing it. He described to me step-by-step on what to do. Another option is to do a service visit. Fancying myself as handy I opted for the DYI version first with his instructions and lo and behold my fireplace works again. To me these are honest people and I will definitely go back and use them for my other needs! Thanks Mike.

I refused to pay $189 for an estimate. I realize estimates cost time and money for a contractor, but that is the cost of doing business. passing this on to a potential customer is poor business practice, in my opinion.!!! I am taking up my valuable time also to get estimates. I would not waste someone else's time asking for estimates unless there was a good chance I would use them. This contractor has good ratings on Angies list, so I probably would have used them. This job probably would price out at between $3000 and $4000!!! This money will now go to another contractor. I am disappointed that this practice occurs.
Description of Work: Called them to get an estimate for re-pointing 2 chimneys. Spoke to Jack in the office. Jack said they charge $189 for them to come look at the job and give and estimate. I refused. Even if would be applied to the future invoice, this is not how to do business.

Response from Certified Craftsmen
(Member name removed), Our company does not provide "free estimates" as a chimney service. We do however provide free roof replacement quotations. We have never advertised or promoted "free chimney estimates" . Since you have taken the time to slander and damage our company online even though we did not in anyway conduct business with you or make misrepresentations to you, please take the time to consider why we do not provide free chimney estimates: (1) We conduct NFPA level one and level two chimney evaluations with documented images and full reports prior to working on any chimney or fireplace system. Out technicians are either FIRE certified or CSIA certified. Each and every chimney we look at has to be documented with a full image report for our protection and yours. This 3-10 page report is provided to you. (2) For chimneys serving heating plants such as yours we have to pull the lower breaching to check for clogs, inner flue deterioration, hazardous spillage issues, btu ratings for proper sizing, acidic condensation issues, stability of the chimney at the base, clearances to combustibles, and potential causes for the issues directly related to your chimney. We will not repair an exterior chimney or flue if we do not solve what is causing the issue in the first place. Many times with regards to tuck-pointing on chimneys serving heating flues the damage that is seen is caused by condensation in the winter time when the exhaust by-products hit the exterior of the chimney. This causes issues which will deteriorate the entire chimney. Many times when a client calls for a grind and point job (which our chimney masons do very well on a weekly basis), the chimneys stability is compromised and actually needs at least an upper end rebuild. Many "free estimate companies" will tell you what you want to hear and provide a cheap and completely ineffective job just to receive payment from you. We provide honest and thorough reporting so that you know exactly what is going on with your chimney. The inspection and report takes at least three to four hours of combined time. If we absorbed this cost with the thousands of evaluations we have completed our company would be out of business. (3) For fireplace flues we have to look at and evaluate the : Foundation, inner heath build, combustible clearances, fireplace opening ratios, smoke chamber construction and condition, flue tile condition, damper condition, hearth extension sizing, stability, exterior masonry condition where applicable, crown- wash condition, flashing construction and condition, venting issues and many other potential problems. You as the customer need to be aware of the entire picture regarding your chimney due to the potential for operational hazards associated your chimney or fireplace. (Member name removed) , we have solved literally hundreds of serious hazardous issues relating to chimneys. Our most recent is involving a job in Sea Girt. The client who is a lawyer and her family were exposed to high levels of Carbon Monoxide due to a very poor repair. The exterior repair was complete but the carbon monoxide detectors started going off and the gas company shut their heating and hot water heating system down. The repair that was completed by the company that they hired could have severely injured their family or even worse... Through our complete and through inspection we uncovered: 10 different IRC, NFPA 211 and 54, local AHJ code compliance issues, a completely non-usable, incorrect, and faulty chimney installation. This was all documented for the customer in a thorough yet concise report. We are honest and upfront about our charges. We do not enter your home as many others do and apply high pressure tactics to sell ineffective repairs. The costs associated with obtaining customers and providing them thorough reports is approximately $250-275.00 at minimum. We ask our customers to pay us a fee for our time and expertise. In return they receive a valuable service. As I understand it you had two chimneys that needed evaluation and we were only charging $189.00. You made the decision to not utilize our inspection and reporting service which is your decision to make. Unfortunately for our company, we have lost a potential customer in you. I think you would have seen the value in our service and if you had actually hired our company for the proper evaluation, documentation and correct repairs. We did not conduct business with you or misrepresent our company's intent. A $3000-4000.00 job would never make us compromise our company's successful and well intended policies. We have a right to our policies as you have a right not to conduct business with our company. You could have sent us an email regarding this making your displeasure known. You have chosen to take this a step further and slander and damage a company you have not even engaged in business. Business was not conducted and I am asking you respectfully to remove this slander and rating from Angie's list. Our company did nothing to hurt you and we are asking for reciprocal treatment. We are a local company and all of our employees were born and raised in Ocean and Monmouth County and we only have our reputation and consider it vitally important. There is absolutely no merit to your complaint and your submission is simply meant to damage our company. You also state the cost was $3000.00 when there was $0 cost because business was never conducted or proposed in any way!. We haven't done anything wrong. Please cease and desist and remove this baseless submission. Respectfully, Wayne Cappadona Certified Craftsmen

. Michael came exactly on schedule for the estimate. His estimate was the best I've gotten from a contractor. It included a precise description of ALL the work they were proposing to perform with pictures documenting the damages they were going to repair. Wayne called several times to arrange the work schedule according to our needs. Wayne and his work crew arrived as promised. The work crew was courteous and worked very efficiently with no disruption of our home. They did everything they had proposed with care to be sure their work would comply to the code. Wayne even wrote out a thorough description of the work that had been done for the inspector. The final cost was as estimated.
Description of Work: The mechanical chimney, the one for the hot water heater and the furnace, was repointed and the chimney cap was sealed. The inside of the chimney was relined with a stainless steel liner. The vents to the chimney from the furnace and the hot water heater were re-routed to conform to the current building code.

The guy that showed up came on time and was professional. The problem was the pilot wouldn't stay light. After the guy tried cleaning it out he said I needed a new part. At first, I didn't think anything of it, afterall, the fireplace is 12 years old. I had to pay $189.00 just for him to look at it. I was told the price for the part would be around $200-250 and he would email me once he had it. A week goes by and I heard nothing. I called the company and left a message. The next day I got the email. The email explained the parts I needed and the cost. According to this company I needed a new kit and the final price was going to be $479.00! I had already paid $189 for absolutely nothing! I went on line a looked up the parts I needed. The total was between $89-100 depending on the company. I called the owner and told him I know how much the parts are, I already paid $189.00 and asked him if he could come down on the price. He said no, his men are certified...... I called Fireplace Pros in Toms River and talked to a guy named Charlie. I explained my situation and he told me, over the phone at NO cost, what he thought my problem really was and walked me through how to fix it. He told me 9 out of 10 times the valve where the gas comes out of needs to be cleaned with a can of compressed air. He said, if it doesn't work call him back. Well, after spending $4 on a can of compressed air, my fireplace works perfectly! NO THANKS TO THIS COMPANY!!! Either their employees are idiots, or the company rips its customers off left and right. Unless you like getting ripped off, DO NOT go with this company!
Description of Work: No service was done, just an expensive estimate to repair my gas fireplace.

$189

Response from Certified Craftsmen
The $189.00 covers the cleaning and the service charge. Many times(9 out of 10 times is an exaggeration) the cleaning will take care of any gas supply issues at the pilot assembly or burner ports. The technician was there to clean the pilot assembly, burner ports, check for flame impingement on the ods sensor, check for proper log placement (which is very important, especially for vent –free log sets), check for pilot drop-out(safety) and check for gas leaks. He did clean the burners and pilot. I do not know why the cleaning did not completely remove all contaminants. Once the unit has been cleaned, if issues such as the one you had still occur, the problem exists either in the gas valve or pilot assembly. This is the reason we sent you repair quotations. Apparently the cleaning did not remove all the dust, debris or contaminants and we apologize for this. It is very important that “vent free log sets” function correctly or a carbon monoxide hazard can develop. “Vent free log sets” are illegal in the states of CA,MN,NM,WI and Canada. Many other states are following suit. When we see issues like this in “vent free sets” we sometimes may get overly cautious. As someone that has serviced thousands of log sets I can tell you that a can of compressed gas does not take care of issues with log sets ninety percent of the time. We have serviced thousands of customers since 1989 and have a great track record with very few complaints. It is unfortunate you wish to disparage our company by referring to us as “rip-offs”. We will provide hundreds of customers who will disagree with you. In this instance I have to assume our cleaning was not as thorough as it should have been and for that we apologize. We are sorry you are not happy.

It was decent pricing and very nice people. They were wonderful and came exactly when they said. They did a fabulous job. I asked them a couple of questions about converting my wood burning fireplace to gas and he went home and sent me a great estimate. He emailed me all the different kinds and choices. I found them on Angie's List. They did it well and fast, they were very informative. He looked up the insert for my fireplace so he knew what kind it was and whether to convert it. He was very thorough and helpful.
