My wife and I are very pleased with the job Mr. Handyman did for us on our kitchen remodeling project. All aspects of the job went smoothly, despite the unforseen challenges that are typically encountered with an older home. I was amazed at how efficiently and economically these issued were resolved by Mr. Handyman. The lead worker assigned to my project (Karl) was no doubt a master craftsman who takes great pride in his work. He is a highly skilled craftsman who did an outstanding job. His attention to detail and creative eye allowed us the opportunity to make "on-site" design changes that enhanced the appeal of the entire kitchen - at no additional cost! I don't want to overlook the work of the other people that Mr. Handyman assigned to my project. Their painter, plumber and electrician all worked cleanly and efficiently and all did an excellent job. The best part of my experience with Mr. Handyman of S.Orange/Westfield/Scotch Plains was doing business with their owner, Dave. He made sure that the project went according to our agreed upon schedule, and always kept me informed about and changes that were needed. The project was completed within our agreed upon schedule, despite the unforseen challenges I mentioned above. I also found Dave to be very fair and honest in all financial aspects of he project. I highly recommend Mr. Handyman of S.Orange/Westfield/Scotch Plains.
Description of Work: I hired Mr. Handyman of S.Orange/Westfield/Scotch Plains to do a kitchen remodeling project in my Westfield, NJ home. The job included the removal and replacement of our kitchen cabinets, backsplash and countertops. There was also some light construction, electrical and plumbing work involved.

All of us enjoyed working on this project with you and your wife. Your understanding and appreciation of some of the unique challenges of your remodeling project made our job easier. We did not mind adding the free upgrades to enhance the look of the kitchen as the work was noticed and appreciated. I hope you and your family have many wonderful meals in your new kitchen!! Many thanks, David

Thank you for your comments. Unfortunately we are not staffed to do estimates for very small projects. When our technician gets to the job we give you an estimate for small jobs and we also give you a range on the phone. While I understand that this model is not right for every person or project it works for our company. 77% of our customers are repeats so once you give it a try I think you may understand the differences in the workmanship and experience of working with Mr. Handyman. Also, it cost us about $65 to do an estimate and that would need to be passed on to the customer in higher prices. We have all A reviews on Angies list and one B from people that have experienced our service. We answered the phone on your first call and were polite in answering your questions. You can disagree with our price but I think its unfair to give us "F" ratings. Many contractors do estimates for small jobs but do not show up to your home when better opportunities come their way. We prefer to be honest and do not over commit our capabilities. Thanks again for the feedback.

Mr. Handyman installed a replacement sump pump that I bought myself. They came quickly, assessed the proper parts needed, got the parts, did the job and thoroughly cleaned up after themselves in under two hours! AND, when a clamp broke several months later (I did not know that was the problem) they sent someone right over to assess and fixed the whole mess in no time at no charge, because they really do stand behind their work!!!!!

A large tree from my neighbors home fell in my yard during Hurricane Irene. It tore the gutter and leader off the side of the house and dropped debris in the other gutters. It was very difficult to get anyone to return my calls because of the extensive damage in our area, so I called Mr. Handyman and they called me within the hour and came the next day to clean the gutters , secure them and measure for the new ones. They called to schedule installation four days later but actually came one day earlier and completed the work perfectly. Excellent work -- I couldn't be more pleased.

I had called a number of Handymen - from different sources such as the local newspaper as well as the yellowpages. All of them promised to come by my house and review the problem but none did. Neither did any of them return my numerous calls over several days. As a last resort, I joined Angie's list and called Mr. HandyMan. And I only wish I had done this in the first place - it could've saved me a lot of frustration. Tom (the owner of Mr. HandyMan), answered my call personally instead of having me to leave a message with some answering service or machine. he also gave me a time when his technician would visit my house and followed up with another call half an hour before his visit. Such professionalism and service is extremely rare in this field. Anyways, when Michael, the technician arrived ( and he did so very promptly and at the time promised), he explained to me in detail how their pricing worked and also explained how I could make the most of his time for the rate structure. Very impressed by this disclosure. Most handymen would charge you by the job, regardless of how long it too them. A 5 minutes job could cost you a couple of hundred. Not so with Mr. Handymen. Mike explained to me that since i was going to billed $192 for the first hour and half anyways, I could include other and as many tasks I would like him to work on in that time frame. Must say, I had never encountered this kind of service before. Another thing that surprised and really impressed me was that anytime Michael stepped inside my house, he would put on plastic socks over his shoes so as not to track dirt and mud into my house. Normally, people who work on your house - plumbers, electricians etc who have to go in and out of your house will do so without giving a second thought about ruining your carpet or floor. Most Asian families do not wear shoes inside their homes. This is both a cultural thing as well as to keep the house clean. So, this gesture from Michael was really appreciated. Michael was very patient and understanding and answered all my questions. Will definitely look forward to working with Mr. Handymen in the future for all my home projects. Not being a handy person myself, I most certainly will have a lot of work for Mr. Handymen. As for my membership to Angie's list. I have to say the membership fees was absolutely worth every penny.

I had up until now been having the gutters on two adjacent family homes cleaned by a well-known gutter cleaning service. Each time they came, they followed up with calls that there were "major problems" with the gutters at both homes, and repairs must be done or "major damage to the home could result." When pressed, the company rep on the phone stated that the repairs for the two houses would be $5,000 or more each. My husband and I can not climb up on the roof to check out these problems (and we sure weren't going to just take THEIR word for it) so I decided it was time for a second opinion. I had seen Mr. Handyman trucks in the area, and after checking them on Angie's List, decided to give them a call. I told Dave the manager that I just wanted to have the gutters cleaned. Dave told me this would be done, and as part of their regular service, the gutters, roof and chimney would be checked. We set a date and time, and a very nice man named Mike showed up (on time). Mike thoroughly cleaned the gutters on both homes, bagging the debris, and offering to take it away with him. He was up on the roofs over two hours. Afterward, he came down and went over his findings: although there were minor areas of concern, the gutters did NOT have to be replaced or repaired, nor major work required. He didn't pressure me to set up a "regular scheduled gutter cleaning" either. The cost for the service was $300 plus tax, which is more than the previous gutter cleaning company charged, but those workers also zipped through the cleaning in less than half an hour, and the "inspections" (that produced the telephoned warnings of major catastrophe) are now highly suspect. If Mike had come up with the same issues that the previous gutter company had pointed out, I would have had to acknowledge that there really might be problems, and how was I going to come up with the money to repair them!. I can not tell you how relieved I was after Mike's report. Mr. Handyman really has an extensive list of services, and based on my positive experience, I am going to call them today about some post-hurricane yard work.

Excellent job. I called late on Wednesday night to ask if someone could come a day earlier than scheduled. The next morning I received a call telling me someone was coming and the time he would arrive. The technician, Michael, arrived early. He had a ladder and all the tools needed for the work. He was polite and professional and did everything I asked. He explained everything to me. He cleaned up each area he worked in.

The technician (Karl) was at my home 15 minutes early which you never see. He came into my house and we showed him the work that we wanted done. He went right to work by first putting down sheets throughout the house to make sure he didn't track in any dirt as he went in and out. He immediately went to work out the flooring which took a good amount of the day. When he finished laying down the tile floor he began working on the vanity in the master bath. This is where his experience really came into play, we have an old house and the previous owner felt he was a handyman himself so a lot of the things he did weren't properly done. Karl ran into issues that would have left me scratching my head but it didn't deter him at all. Whatever problem he ran into he quickly fixed the problem and moved on. The main bathroom had issues as well. The tile on the walls was old and the adhesive used was concrete. Karl took out the two soap dishes above the sink and was going to replace them with the extra tile that the previous owner left. He noticed that the color of the tiles didn't match up with the rest of the tile and instead of taking the easy way out he took two tiles that were going to be behind the vanity and removed them and placed them were the soap dishes were to make the room uniform. The care that Karl used throughout the entire job was extremely important to me because he wouldn't do something that he wouldn't do in his own house. He was very knowledgable and any questions I asked he answered and no problem with me watching him work or ask questions. We couldn't be happier with the work that he did and will definitely being calling Mr. Handyman again when we need something done that we're not comfortable doing.
Description of Work: Had two new vanities put in and new flooring put down.

Overall everything was taken care of professionally, the desk was put together without any problems, drawers glide nicely, is sturdy and was positioned where I requested. The pictures were positioned and aligned based on the space available and I don't have a fear that they will fall. The exhaust fan required a trip to the attic (on an extremely hot day) but turned out that the fan I purchased was a lower grade that the one currently in place (I opted to purchase a higher quality fan). After looking at the basement walls he suggested that they were fine. Recommended a specific deck cleaner and stain.
Description of Work: Had several small household projects that just never got taken care of, including putting together an old Ikea desk, hanging pictures on a brick wall and moving an old big tube TV. I planned on having an exhaust fan in the bathroom replaced but did not have the correct fan for replacement, was recommended to get a better quality based on what is currently there. I requested estimates for painting/re-sealing basement walls and staining a deck.

Sent an e-mail and receive a call within 1 hour after sending. Mr. Handyman guarantees a call back within 2 hours. We discussed the job and he explained the cost and the type of person he would be sending out to do the job. Carl showed up on time and was a professional. He cleaned the fence within the 1 1/2 like he said it would take. I then asked him to do the patio and steps and he said it would talk about 1 1/2 hours. He was on target for the time. Things look so much cleaner now.

I called Mr. H. initially because I had two leaking ceilings and mold growing as a consequence. I was so impressed with the quality of work they did that I kept adding jobs that had long waited to be done. They basically ended up fixing everything that needed repair in my house, including reattaching shutters outside in the front. What struck me about the men who did the work is that they were independent thinkers who could understand what was called for to do the best job and could advise me. They never pressured me to do anything but were completely helpful in explaining their solutions to my repair needs. I have never been so impressed with the work ethic of a company as I am with Mr. Handyman. They ALWAYS did what they said. I always received a communication (email worked well for both of us) every day after work was done to inform me of the next step. Work was done quickly and beautifully. This company operates at the highest professional standards and beyond that, it also has an ethical center. They really do operate under the old-fashioned idea that treating the customer fairly is good business. I find that remarkable today.
Description of Work: I had two ceiling leaks in two different rooms and floors of the house. Mr. Handyman's men determined where the leaks originated, something three previous companies had not managed to do, and fixed them. One leak was from a pipe that had been nailed when the house was being built, carelessly repaired and sealed up in a closet. The man was able to discover this leak, open the drywall, fix the pipe by removing the damaged section and replacing it, and then repairing the drywall. I had drywall mold from the leaks, and they replaced the drywall flawlessly. They also installed a new door in the basement and repaired broken window glass. They repainted my deck and replaced rotted railing on it. They installed new light switches in a media room with three types of lighting. They replaced a tile floor on an outside balcony that had caused the leak in a room. They suggested a new material for the floor that looks beautiful and will be waterproof. They re-did a gutter that was contributing to too much water pounding on my balcony. They painted in various places following ceiling or wall repairs.

First of all, the Technician arrived as scheduled, which is something that is very rare with contractors, today. He was courteous and professional, covering his shoes, prior to entering my home. He worked very independently and cause minimal disturbance to my daily routine. The painting and staining jobs were done meticulously. My house looked 10 years newer, after he power washed it, and all of the repair jobs were done with no "glitches". I was amazed at the diversity of the Technician's knowledge regarding home maintenance and repair. When all work was completed, he cleaned up to the extent that you would not know anyone had been there. This is definitely a case of, "you get what you pay for". For anyone who is interested in high quality, no hassle service, this Mr. Handyman is the provider for you! Karen Vaslas 1861 North Gate Road Scotch Plains, NJ 07076

Greg of Mr. Handyman came promptly and installed a mailbox for my father that I had purchased. He did an outstanding job. While there I asked him to perform a number of odd jobs that I uncovered while visiting my father including: painting some trim on basement windows, doing some work on the front door, fixing some balky sliding closet doors, fixing a light switch, and cleaning some gutters I was very pleased with Greg and Mr. Handyman and would not hesitate to hire them again.
Description of Work: I hired Mr. Handyman (Service Rep was Greg who came out) to do a number of jobs for my father who lives in Mountainside, NJ where I was visiting my father (I live in Ohio) during the week of May 16, 2011. I was looking for someone who could do a variety of jobs around the house for my parents who are in their 80's and wanted someone very reputable and reliable that I could depend on with a simple phone call.

Member, Thank you for your feedback and we are delighted that you were pleased with the quality of work and service. I wanted to give you a little more information regarding the timing to complete the job. The challenge was to install tempered glass shower doors with limited attachment points. Many people would use an adhesive which is not really the proper way as it can loosen with time and be a safety hazard. The proper application is to screw it down to tub. As Gregg discussed with you there are risks involved with this approach as the tub can easily crack no matter how careful you are. If the tech did not take his time drilling (3-4 different bits progressively increasing the size) he would run the risk of the baked on finish chipping off beyond the attachment point and it would be very visible. We also had the added complication in one of the bathrooms of drilling into glass tile on the wall side of the bathtub. This too is a delicate operation. The doors needed to be unpacked and taken up 3 flights of stairs. A slight bump on a turn can shatter the glass so all of this was done with extreme care. Thankfully the project was completed with no damage to the existing tub or tiles. While I understand your dissatisfaction with the price of the job I would encourage you to consider that a new bathtub installation or a custom glass frame less door would cost considerably more than the service that day. Our technicians are trained to consider safety first when they are making a decision on how to approach a job. In this case the safe approach got you the results you wanted but at a cost that was higher than you expected. If we used an adhesive the project would have been completed closer to your expectations but safety/durability would be compromised. We discuss our rates on the phone and our technicians are trained to adjust the estimate in hours based on circumstances that they discover as they work on the job. We also give customers a contract to sign before starting work that clearly indicate our rates. Every job is different and we make modifications as the circumstances dictate. We will continue to work/train our technicians to make sure that our customers have a better understanding of costs related to a job. Our ultimate goal is to do a quality job and in that regard I am glad that you were pleased with the work. Thanks again for taking the time to comment and we will work hard at always improving the entire experience. Regards, David

They were excellent and provided excellent service. They were very polite and really thorough. We never forgot their service. We needed them the most in the summer of 2009. We spent over $200 or $300. It was a lot of man-hours for one person. The handyman was great and trustworthy. I was in the house and it meant a lot to me. I was alone with him and my young son. Sometimes women feel a little uncomfortable with that, but I felt very comfortable with this guy in the house. He also executed his job perfectly. If anybody did damage to that gate, it was my son and the handyman did a perfect job on this gate. It was a serious security issue with my son going up and down the stairs and playing safely upstairs. There was a problem with the type of staircase while putting this gate up, but he adjusted it. He just did it right. He didn?t create anything. He didn?t put anything extra and he followed the directions perfectly while putting the stairs. We felt very confident that our son was safe. He did a great job. We can?t say enough about him. He also had to do some extra work on a wrought iron banister. My son could easily get through and could fall down to the bottom floor if he was determined enough. So, he installed a clear Plexiglas that didn?t compromise the beauty of the staircase, but at the same time made it perfectly safe. He was very meticulous and we didn?t have to do anything. Their price was good. We knew that we had to do something serious with this house. Their punctuality was perfect. I told my husband that we need to use their services again.
Description of Work: We used the services of Mr. Handyman in the summer of 2009 for installing a couple of different gates. He installed a gate on the top of the steps and towards the bottom of the steps.

Technician (Karl) arrived on time and went right to work. Replacement of the vanity top/sink and faucet in the master bath took about two hours and went very well. The removal of the vanity top/sinks and vanity in the family bath took a bit longer and revealed wall damage, which had to be repaired. In addition, the supply lines for one sink had to be moved over to fit the new vanity, and new shut off valves had to be installed. Installation of the new counter required the assembly of two vanity bases and a drawer unit in between. The new counter was taller than the one removed (which I had not realized when ordering), so the existing tile soap dishes had to be removed and replaced with accent tiles to allow the new counter top with built-in back-splash to fit. Karl has a wide range of skills and was able to handle and solve each problem as we encountered it The overall installation, which took about two days, looks and works great.
Description of Work: Remove old vanity top/sink and replace with new vanity top/sink and faucet in master bath. Remove vanity and vanity top/sinks in family bath and replace with new vanities and drawer unit and new vanity top with double sinks, and new faucets and towel bar.

We are lucky to have him at Mr. Handyman and I will be sure that he gets a copy of your review. Thanks for your business and feedback. Regards, David

Technician (John) arrived on time and was very helpful and professional in identifying what the problems were and laying out what needed to be done to fix them. Drywall repairs were large and required more than one visit; John did excellent job -- you cannot see where the damage was. Stairway handrails were very loose. Upstairs handrail post had worked loose. As for the downstairs handrail, carpet installers several years ago had not cut the carpet to replace the newel posts into holes in stair treads. John was able to solve both problems. Over time, the joint between house and front porch had opened up. John did a good job of resealing the joint. Work took about a day and a half. John was very professional and knowledgeable, and he took care to not track in dirt and to clean up any mess caused by the repair work.
Description of Work: Drywall in dining room (ceiling and wall) and in powder bathroom (wall) needed repair. Upstairs handrail and downstairs handrail were both wobbly and needed to be resecured. Joint between house and full-width front porch needed to be sealed to keep rain/snow that sometimes blows onto porch out of house/basement. .

We were thankful the repairs were made. It was a little bit pricey but we can't complete the work so we had to pay what we had to pay. We have only had this one experience and they did a good job. I would tell others to shop around due to the price. It was high work which required a lot of scaffolding. You need to have someone with that kind of equipment. The people that came did have all the equipment and we had the replacement pieces.
Description of Work: He did some outside siding repair for pieces that had blown off.

After contacting Mr. Handyman I set up an appointment to have the work performed. The first appointment was cancelled because of an injury to the workman who was to do the work. The second appointment which was scheduled for a week later was cancelled at the very last minute for the same reason. While the office staff was polite, courteous, they did not bother to call after the second cancellation to reschedule. I would not recommend this firm to anyone.
Description of Work: I contacted Mr. Handyman to have a concrete patio power washed, a crack filled in with cement, and a shed moved. This work was not done.

Gabriel was professional and courteous and did not waste time getting started with the removal and disconnection of the old bathroom vanity. He did not mind my watching him work and was very responsive to any questions I asked. His work was clean and neat and he explained what he was doing and why so that I was able to follow his method of operation. I was impressed with his knowledge and deftness. I was very happy to see the new vanity and new faucets installed with no leaks or other mishaps after several days of use. He also replaced an old door and door knob going into a storage closet. His professional knowledge and pride in his work was exemplified by his planing and replaning the door to allow for a perfect fit in a 25 year old door frame. I had no complaints about his work nor in his methods used to accomplish his goal.
Description of Work: Disconnected and removed vanity in a bathroom; prepared pipes and drain for installation of new vanity and new faucet connections. It was necessary to cut existing pipe and reconfigure due to size of new vanity. A new door and handle was installed to replace an existing door and old door knob at a storage closet in a different part of the house.

He gave me advice on how to keep our stairway safe for our child. He went out of his way to tell us the cheapest way to do this, which is plexiglass. He told me what to get at the home depot and picked it up for me.
Description of Work: He put plexiglass on the railing of our second floor apartment. I called him that afternoon and they got someone over, within an hour, that day. He put gates on first and second floor. He did it very quickly and professionally.

Great! Technician Joe T arrived on time. Polite and friendly. Asked me what jobs I needed done. Gave me an estimate which was fair. Went to get the supplies and went right to work. A very hot and humid day. Excellent work and I have asked Joe to return at a later date to redo my bathroom. I would definitely call Mr Handyman for any future repairs.
Description of Work: Multiple small jobs. Rotted out wooden posts on the back deck to be replaced. Rotted wooden rail posts replaced and painted. Through the wall to the outside cat door removed with inside dry wall replacement and outside cedar shakes replaced and painted. Worn out aluminum/glass atrium door to the back deck. All hardware replaced and bent aluminum repaired. Door bell rewired.

Worried that the weather forecast called for more rain the following day (Tuesday). I needed to have the job done immediately. I called a couple of places (and left messages) before I called My. Handman. David from Mr Handyman picked up the phone immediately. David provided me a brief background of their company, as well as their services and rates. He gave me an appointment for Wednesday but explained that if his handyman finished early on a prior job Tuesday, he'll pass by. Agreeing to the arrangement, I left the parts that were needed to do the job in a secure place for the handyman to access on Tuesday morning, just in case. I received a call Tuesday afternoon at work from David informing me that his handyman can do the job that afternoon. I did not require to be home but I spoke to Gabriel, the handyman, on the phone. He explained what needed to be done. He was patient and professional regarding my questions. I came home to see a clean work area and a clean job done on the siding. The rain poured hours later in the evening. I was so glad the job was done earlier. I am very pleased with the entire experience.
Description of Work: replace loose vinyl siding [located on the attic level] that was blown away during a particularly windy weekend storm.

The Mr. Handyman technician showed up at the scheduled time. He was very professional in his approach and appearance. It was clearly obvious that he had many years of experience. He took a few minutes to understand what I as the customer was looking to have done, reviewed it with me and then immediately went to work. He was very meticulous about his work and kept the work area clean. The work exceeded my expectations both from a quality and efficiency standpoint. I would hire Mr. Handyman of Union County again and this time I will have my list ready for all those little things I never get around to do.
Description of Work: Removed the old and installed all new kitchen molding and chair rails, did drywall work behind the stove, repaired a pocket door and adjusted doors.

I had used their services before and I was very pleased with their work in the past. I was very pleased with their work when I hired them again. They are going to come back to do the tiling process. They fixed my toilet with which I was having a lot of problems. The guy, who came to get the work done estimated that he would complete the work in 90 minutes, but he finished the work in one hour and 45 minutes and we couldn?t ask for anything better than that. He was very helpful. The price was on hourly basis. He took his time and explained everything to me. There were a bunch of problems which were all fixed and everything is fine now. Since I had used their services before, I didn?t mind going back to them again. They also give a discount to people who use their services for the second time. The last time I used their services, they replaced the various internal working parts of the toilet tank. They also discovered a secondary problem which was something to do with the control system. The technician had to go and find the right part to fix the control system. So, he bought the part from a local hardware store and came back to finish the job. He fixed anything that he came across. He was very prompt and I also asked him to look at the tiling job that I want to get done in the upstairs bathroom. He went over to look at it and he figured out a way to fix the problem. Something that I appreciate about him is that, he explains to you as to what has to be done and some of it you could end up doing it yourself, which would reduce the cost. If you aren?t able to complete the job, then he comes and finishes the job for you, which is really helpful. He is really good at explaining as to what are the other ways that you can adopt to get your project completed, if you can?t afford to have him come. I will use the services of Mr. Handyman again in the future.
Description of Work: I have been using the services of Mr. Handyman for various projects.
