It is very difficult to find a handyman that actually knows what they are doing, and can tackle almost any job in the condo (and do it the right way). I would have to have called a plumber for a relatively minor fix to changing a leaking shower, a flooring guy to fix the piece of rotting floor and sub-floor, and a painter to paint the apartment. They aren't the cheapest contractors around, but convenience of having 1 person being able to do all this is key in 1 trip. Paul was great in getting all these tasks done quickly and efficiently in 7-8 hours of time. They came in short notice (I had only called 2 days prior) and showed up on time to the apartment. Definitely would recommend again.
Description of Work: Full Day of Work to fix minor repairs for a rental unit. 1) Fix shower diverter cartridge 2) Paint 1 Room (1 Coat) 3) Fix rotting piece hardwood flooring.

Unfortunately, the original estimate was way off in terms of both price and time. The estimate was 2-3 days for $3000 and ended up 5 days and cost $4,000. They scraped and spackled and painted the ceiling, but there were large smooth patches in the textured ceiling and it was obviously uneven. They had to come back to apply a textured surface and re-paint the ceiling. After they came back to finish the job, there were quite a bit of paint droplets on the floor, stairs and not an insignificant amount on the wood trim. Overall, it was an OK, not great, job. But next time I will hire painters for painting jobs.
Description of Work: Repair cracked plaster and peeling paint in LR, DR and hallway including ceiling. The ceiling had been covered with a textured paint that had been patched over years before and was very uneven. I asked them to scrape everything that was cracked and even out the overall surface.

Our experience with Ann and David was pleasant when booking the job. They were thoughtful and gave an thorough explanation of what to expect and promptly scheduled the technician's visit. When the technician arrived it was clear this was going to be a big waste of time. Knowing the job on hand, he walks in with no tools claiming he had no idea why he was coming. After we explained that we want the job done right (not sure why would pay for anything else) he explained what was needed to be done. We agreed for him to open 2 exploratory holes. This discussion was 15 minutes to explain again what we had told Ann and David. 45 minutes later, of which included 6 2-3 minute trips to the truck to get tools (why would you not bring them at once) the result was that this was "big job". Let me point out an example of the inefficiency and attempt to run up the clock - he needed to use a Dremel tool to open the first hole. The next hole instead of using the same tool he used reciprocal saw which of course needed another trip to the car. A need to unpack it. Charge it ... Obviously this was to add time to the job. The icing on the cake was when he finished and said it would be an hour to bill. 15 minutes later when he returned with an invoice we found out he charged us an additional 15 minutes for the time it took him to fill out the invoice. As if the surprise extra charge wasn't enough, I'm paying for the illiterate fool of a technician's inability write a couple sentences on an invoice. I'm not upset he couldn't get the job done, I rather he not because he wasn't skilled and we were prepared for that possibility. We're upset at the lack of integrity of the technician. Unless you need a light bulb changed, avoid these guys (and I say that with all due respect to Ann and David who seem very decent).

We try to respond to feedback in a respectful and truthful fashion. The technician you described has 21 "A " reviews on Angie's List last year so your description is puzzling.. He is hardworking and has 25 years experience in the trades. Your characterization of him as an "illiterate fool" is not worthy of a dignified response. While I understand that you were unhappy its hard for me to respond to a service issue when you describe our professionals that way. "Name calling" is not respectful and in my opinion cheapens the value of the Angie's List forum.

He was extremly helpful and performed quality work. Originally he was just going to fix up the deck area but my wife also asked him to fix an electrical socket in the house as well as fix a piece of rotted wood in our doorframe going outside. He was so nice and completed all the repairs well and was very nice. I would recommend using this service for sure.

This is my first experience using Angie's List and using a contractor without any personal recommendations. Contractor was not aware of local parking conditions in Hoboken and attempted to try and find parking for over an hour before giving up. I sympathize, however, the very same morning I had another contractor find parking with no issues. We rescheduled the schedule date where I paid for a permit to park in front of building with no further issues. The work scheduled went very well. It was to strip out old sheetrock and replace with new sheetrock, insulation, taping/spackling while replacing base molding. We added an additional project which was to replace a standard shower head with a shower tower. All work was performed cleanly and efficiently as work is performed on a time and material basis. I consider overall price slightly high, however, feel its okay when you have a responsible contractor. I would use them again and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: Contractor provided replacement of sheetrock, insulation, taping/spackling, and replacing base molding. A second project was replace a shower head with a shower tower.

Overall, I was very pleased with the job. Greg was my technician and he was polite and professional. He worked diligently and quickly to install my new sink vanity and mirror. He didn't really take any breaks which I was surprised about. This was my first time using Mr. Handyman. I didn't feel comfortable with their pricing model at first as their pricing is based on number of hours rather than a set price range to complete a job. They had given me a quote of the estimated time necessary to complete the job and Greg completed the job within this time range. I liked that I didn't have to sign a contract or put down a deposit beforehand. I spoke to another handyman who wanted me to sign a contract and put down a large deposit before they did the work. The process with Mr. Handyman seemed much easier as Greg showed up and completed the job.

Unbelievably well! I live in Texas and own a condo in Jersey City. Coordinating this type of work remotely is extremely difficult. I first started talking to Anne who was very helpful and then later with Bruce. I have no idea about anything construction related but Bruce (remotely) guided me through the process, even calling a manufacturer if a new material I wanted to try out to find out more about it. He even met me (unexpectedly) at the job site on the first day to review everything! The work happened in the timeframe estimated and was wonderfully done. Everyone at this company was a pleasure to work with and they have my full trust and confidence. What an unusually positive experience. A special thanks to Bruce!

While not the cheapest offer in town, you get what you pay for and I have always been extremely satisfied This is the second time I have had their carpenter Robert out to fix work done by the previous home owner. He is extremely skilled, knowledgeable and friendly. He showed up on time and got to work immediately. As another reviewer commented, it is the little things that matter. After fixing the exterior door and insuring it opened and closed properly without gaps, he also took the time to secure the framing around the entry way and offered several additional tips to completing the finish work. The job was finished in less time than expected and I will definitely hire them again to finish the way too many projects I have started.

I am very pleased with the quality of the work, the ease of scheduling, and the wide variety of work completed. Understand that Mr. Handyman provides a premium service that is worth the price. No drama, no surprises, no excuses. The experienced, skilled carpenter, Dean, understood exactly what I needed done, and how to do the work. Little things matter a lot. He re-installed a previous, faulty installation of my bathroom shower doors. Now the frame is securely attached to the tub, sealed perfectly, and the work was done without so much as a single scratch on the tile walls (which is tricky, given that the aluminum frame has sharp edges when removed). I didn't have to ask for invisible clear calking along the tile walls and white calking along the seam with the white tub, or replacement of a little broken guide wheel at the bottom of the door assembly - these were just done, and done just right. Consider also the task of replacing a cracked limestone step at the front of my house. This job was finished perfectly. The pitch of the new piece is perfect for the spot it is in, the brick underneath was replaced and pointed exactly right, and the seams were sealed. This is the second time I have hired Mr. Handyman (Dean was the carpenter sent both times) and I'll hire this company again.

Provider was very responsive and willing to work with me; however there is a flaw in the initial process. I needed them to enclose pipes as the soffet was destroyed by the plumber. Described the job initially as 18 foot enclosure and supplied pictures. Workman arrived with insufficient materials and wanted to charge me for shopping. Although this charge was removed significant mark up resulted in 140 charge for about 40 work of materials. Then the $700 only translated to Sheetrock and cornerbead installation without spackling--probably the most essential part of a drywall job to deliver professional looking job. Initial estimate was $300. I would use them again with the following caveats measure the job yourself and provide the dimensions so the estimate is accurate and purchase the supplies yourself so they are on hand and available. No one wants to pay almost 100 per hour for a shopping trip to Home Depot. Update: They said that they overcharged me for items that they said they used, but were never used. I questioned them about this and they said they would mail out a check for repayment for non-used materials. I have never received this check.

In my experience, at some point most workmen will make a suggestion that seems to be more in their own interest than mine. I didn't get even a hint of that, not even for a second, with Dean. He's s no-nonsense workman, completely professional, easy to talk to, straight-shooting, with a lot of valuable experience, and a good sense of humor to boot. My only complaint in the whole experience is that even though I really wanted Dean back for a third or fourth day, to finish installing lights, stove vent, and new ceiling in the kitchen - which has to be done on a tight deadline - I couldn't get him. No fault of his, though. Even though I mentioned to the office from the start that I had a huge amount of work to be done, I wanted to see first hand how things went first, so I only hired Dean for one day at the start. And even though I told the office right afterwards that I was very happy with him and definitely wanted him to come back, they had already gone ahead and booked him for other jobs. I was lucky even to get him back a second day. Dean is in high demand, so if you need him for more than one day, make sure you book him for the whole time at the outset. The price is also higher than usual. but it's a case of getting what you pay for, and it was definitely worth every penny. In fact the work he did on the second day actually cost me less than half of what a local electrician quoted for the the job.
Description of Work: Day 1: Right off the bat, Dean evaluated the condition of my basement walls, giving invaluable advice on what I needed and didn't need in the way of masonry work, french drains, and concrete sealing and repair - which will probably save us many thousands of dollars. Then he got work on the porch, which I'd neglected to maintain properly and was leaking into the garden room ceiling. he screwed down all the loose porch boards with galvanized nails, scraped off all the old paint; sanded the whole porch very thoroughly; caulked all the open seams, wood-filled the screw holes, and re-painted the entire porch. Also power-sanded an ill-fitting basement door - much faster than me trying to take a hand plane to it. (8.25 hrs) Day 2: Ran two "homeruns" of 12-2 Romex from basement circuit box to kitchen ceiling, replacing old BX to light and adding separate circuits for this and new line to stove vent; replaced light switch with triple switch for new central and track lighting. (4.5 hrs.)

My experience with Mr. Handyman was very good. David, the sales representative who schedules the service, is honest and truthful -- for e.g. David recommended that I buy the paint for the apt due to the fact that there will be a 20% surcharge on materials that Mr. Handyman has to purchase for each specific job. Since I was not able to take off from work, I couldn't monitor the progress of work each day. That said on certain days, the painters only worked 5 hrs or 6.5 hrs and this was specifically highlighted on the final bill and I was only charged for hrs worked and not an entire day. I really appreciated this sort of honesty. What I also liked is that each morning, the technicians or painters gave me a summary of what they plan to accomplish and without fail they accomplished their tasks. Something else to also mention is the technicians and painters are punctual and responsive. Anne, one of the experienced and talented painters, painted my whole apt. She did an exceptional job and I would unequivocally recommend her to anyone. Lastly, Mr. Handyman service is expensive as they charge by the hour. Given that their work is quite good, I definitely plan on using them again for other jobs.
Description of Work: 1) Removing built-in wall shelving i.e. converting a library back into a bedroom 2) Re-wriring so that TV and speaker wires go through inside the wall 3) Repainting the entire condo unit -- the sellers had really dark paint on the walls throughout the apt.
