Service technician was very punctual and friendly After walking through the issue and describing what I was able to diagnose myself with the tools I had, the technician identified the problem (loose power wire near the blower) and resolved the issue Diagnostic price was good ***************************************************************************** This is the second update to this review... The service manager (Joe) called me up to explain that their business is not the type to try to exploit customers or take advantage of them. He asked to come take a look at the damage that I proclaimed was caused by the service technician. Giving them the benefit of the doubt, I complied and welcomed the service manager back to my home to investigate. After Joe inspected the unit, he convinced me that the wire (that I had previously suspected was purposely cut by the service technician) was not damaged by his technician. His logic was that the wire color was aged compared to a freshly cut wire. At that moment I accepted it since his logic made sense at that time. Perhaps it's due to age, but a week after it just came to me that when the wire was "shorting" against the metal frame, the spark is what caused the copper wire to burn and look aged (basic high school Physics). I still have high speculation that the wire was purposely cut. However, I cannot prove it since I did not see the actual tampering. The circumstantial evidence does convince me that it was caused by them since the root cause of the original issue was no where near this problem. As a customer that is willing to pay fair wages for honest service I couldn't let this go and had to warn others of my experience in hopes that this does not happen again. Sorry Joe and GRC, but this is my final review update and please do not contact me again.

Response from GRC Mechanical Services
When the technician arrived he found no power at the out door unit due to a tripped circuit breaker in the electrical panel inside the house. He reset the breaker and checked the unit operation. All seemed ok until he attempted to put the unit cover back on. The unit breaker tripped again. He then located an electrical short in the unit where a wire had rubbed against the inner panel. This was in a place was not visible and by taking on and off the cover it moved the wires enough for the short to reoccur. Mr. [removed member name] accused the tech of creating the short and attempted to repair the short with electrical tape himself. After leaning about this situation I promptly scheduled a meeting that Saturday with Mr. [removed member name] at his home. Once I removed the tape it was very obvious to to me that this was an older short based on the oxidation on the copper wire. I then showed Mr. [removed member name] the difference between a fresh copper short by stripping back the wire. He then agreed to the difference. I then made a more permanent repair to the short as the technician, who originally responded, had suggested in the first place. Joe Panagia Service Mgr.

I called to ask what I think is a simple question. My AC is not doing well and it likely needs a freon recharge of R22. I saw the 29.99 service call deal and wanted to ask how much they charged per pound for R22 since likely I need this. I was told I cannot get the price per pound until after the tech comes and checks out the system. How odd... Do they charge you after they size up your house, car and income ??? How bizarre they cannot tell you what they charge for a produce they will sell you. I get it they cannot tell an exact price for what may or may not need repairing, but they should easily be able to say something like ... "Should you in fact need R22, we charge xxx price per pound for this."
Description of Work: I need (or fairly sure) I need freon recharge. I called to find out pricings.

[member name removed], We are sorry you were not satisfied with our answer to your question. We do charges on a flat rate cost and it depends on how empty your system is, how large it is and we provide a full start up to ensure the system is operating properly. That is why we do not disclose the cost per pound because we do not just add refrigerant and hope that was the only problem. More importantly any ac system is a closed loop system and should never need to be "topped off". It is professionally and environmentally in poor taste to just add more refrigerant. We want to find the leak and try to fix it so that you do not run into that problem again. Furthermore it is a violation of EPA regulations to add refrigerant without fixing the leak depending on what percentage of refrigerant has leaked out. We have been doing this line of work for over 65 years spanning three generations, under no circumstances does your zip code or the vehicle in your driveway have any bearing on our pricing. If you would like to contact us we would be more than happy to help you with your ac troubles; however, simply adding more refrigerant and not trying to find the leak is not what any quality company would do.

I called GRC on an extremely hot day when my central air conditioning stopped working late in the afternoon. Their service personnel arrived within an hour. He completed a diagnostic and proceeded to acquire the needed parts and motor. He went to three suppliers with no luck and ran out of time. He returned the next day with the needed equipment and replaced the parts. He was very professional and cleaned up after completing the job. I would definitely call this company again.

My central A/C was not working at all -- no fan, no compressor. Circuit breakers were on. I called GRC b/c top-rated on Angie's List and nearby. Joe patiently talked me through diagnosing the problem and came up with the solution -- someone had turned off the furnace switch. It's sweltering and I would have paid for a service call, but Joe stayed with me on the phone until we had resolved the problem and helped me out gratis. Exceptional!
Description of Work: Walked me through troubleshooting the reason my central A/C wasn't working and figured out that it was the furnace switchch. Problem resolved no charge. Pleasant, helpful.

Made a big deal purchase it was like a $100 for $500 worth of new Carrier for heating and cooling system. It is fine. I don’t quite understand the whole procedure but from what I understand I had to pay a $100 to Angie’s List to get a $500 rebate from the man who put in my furnace and the air conditioning. Actually I got $400 all so I don’t quite understand what the $100 went it went to Angie’s List to do what like. My guy said if I went on to Angie’s List and paid the $100 he will not have $500 off my bill but I did get the $500 off my bill. It was very good. I am very satisfied. They did the service I think was around March 26 in that range and did the furnace and central air. They are very nice. Actually everybody was very nice. Everybody at GRC was also very good, very nice. They were excellent. They were very good. The price is excellent because the price of someone else before I went to them and I was very pleased. They work with me. They understood the financial situation that I was in and they did not push me for thinking the options. They did not pressure me which would make me go back to them. They were right on top of everything right on time. The guy name Freddie was very kind. He was very, very patient with us and I had so many questions and very patient in explaining everything to me.

The service people were right on time as promised. They introduced themselves and the senior one stated that he was training a new person. After they diagnosed the problem, I was told how much it would be. They fixed the problem and waited until the boiler went through two cycles to ensure that it was working properly. Very professional and polite.

We started using GRC in 2010 after a contractor has mis-wired something in our newly purchased home and the AC would not work. Since my parents had used GRC in the past, I thought I would give them a try, After some investigation, the GRC technician found the issues that both the electrician and contractor has missed and corrected the issue and cleaned up the system to boot! AC works like a charm. In the past they have installed a new boiler for us and more recently, a hot water heater. While they do charge more than some others, their work quality is excellent and they stand by their work. While the hot water heater installation was more expensive than I had hoped, we did get a very good deal on the boiler. When it comes to heat. cooling and hot water, the extra money is worth the peace of mind.

Installation was very good. Installers were very professional. We had a minor issue with adapting a HEPA filter and they took some time to solve it (much longer than i expected) but after several visits they were able to connect it. As a follow up (5/8/2013), Unit is working very well and temperature/humidity is well controlled. I am very happy with the installation and also that they keep working on the HEPA filter connection till was solved.

Was able to get a last minute appointment for central a/c servicing. Technician arrived 30-45 min early. Technician did not even touch any part of my a/c unit. Did not look at condensor or anything else. He only climbed into the attic and stayed by the attic door and looked at the ducts. (i was with him the entire time). Entire process took 5-10 mins and thats with him explaining that i needed another appointment for a duct inspection. I don't think they should have charged a penny for just looking at my air ducts.

The customer had an airflow problem and a malfunctioning zoning system attached to undersized ductwork. To correct this type of problem is beyond a service technicians scope of work and requires the system to be reengineered and quoted. All of the previous would have been performed for no additional charge if the client wanted his system corrected. As far as the service charge, it costs money to have a certified, insured technician come to a home and diagnose a problem.

The central AC unit came with the house I bought in 2000. I never had it serviced and the AC gradually stops cooling this summer. Brian was sent to my house and he immediately knew that the dirty coil was the root cause to my problem. Not only did Brian quickly cleaned the coil, he also looked into the attic with a drip that concerned me. Brian was professional and personable. I think I paid a lot for what needed to be done but the customer service was worth the headache I had for a long time.

Overall I was very satisfied with GRC, including the pricing and bid process as well as the installation (no experience yet on the service). Rich, who was my sales person, did a very good job on the pricing, on working with me on the specs, and also doing some research on the efficiency of the units, which ones would qualify for which rebates and incentives (including utility co. incentives and federal tax items,) - he was very knowledgeable and responsive to the many questions I had (and I can be quite particular). The installation team was good, including Bill, the senior engineer who planned the job (which was a critical step in the process) as well as the team which did the work and their supervisor. The team was thoughtful about the installation and it is clear that both the sales team and the installation team had experience and also ongoing training (which is important as the industry continues to advance the products). The install team did make some minor damage to our banister, which I wasn't happy about, but after I notified the senior engineer, he did commit that they would repair it (although it's yet to be scheduled). The only other negative was that the team left a few small, old parts from my old unit outside my house and I had to ask them to pick up and throw them away. Small item on the positive, the install team was willing to run the flex lines to the vents in a way that would still follow good AC design but would minimize the impact to the usable storage space in my attic - but I did have to make sure to talk with them about it. Overall though I was very satisfied with GRC, their processes, and the work done. As with any contractor, I would recommend to call their current references (which I did, 3 of them) and also get multiple bids for your work, as the pricing and equipment a contractor proposes can vary. I had planned and was all set to go with a different bid, which included different brand equipment when I received a promotional letter from GRC. I was not expecting to select them, but decided to have them over and provide a proposal. They were responsive and because they bid equipment which qualified for the utility co incentives and the federal tax credit, and because of a Carrier promotion, I was able to go with them - those items made the pricing competitive with my other winning bid, and I feel I got more value because of the incentives/credits/rebates, and with the Carrier system, got better features (such as humidity control, the ability of the master thermostat to control the second thermostat, etc) than I would have with the other brand that had been proposed by the other contractor (whom I also liked very much, and was proposing a very common brand). Of course, each customer's situation is unique, so you really need to get the right system for your own specific situation, but overall I was satisfied with GRC and can provide a positive recommendation for them based on my experience with them..
Description of Work: Replaced 3 ton 26 year old central air (which was connected to 2nd fl only) with a new Carrier 5 ton 17 SEER unit with zoning to serve both the first and second floors (e..g replaced my old central air conditioner with a new one). All vents were already in place for both floors, so GRC replaced the condenser (outside), air handler (inside) and ran all new ducts in the attic to serve all vents, and also ran all new electric and other lines.

The last call, our boiler was leaking steam from a pipe. I had a newborn in the house, they came right away and the pipe broke while they were fixing it (Not their fault, an incredibly old pipe that had corroded). They didn't have a part to replace it, but understanding my situation, responded quickly and made a pipe to replace the part. All fixed before the house even got cold.

The salesman for the company, John Russenberger, was very punctual, very knowledgeable, very patient, and very personable. He offered me several different systems in several different price ranges. The work commenced within a week of signing the contract. The job took 3 days. Terence and Leo were the installers. I was especially impressed by Terence's expertise. Most of the ductwork had to be made from scratch. Terence constructed it perfectly. He was also very patient in answering all of my questions. I would not hesitate to recommend them to any of my friends.
