I tried to call them yesterday but their phones were "down". So I called McPuff instead & hired McPuff. Blackbeard's rep "Diane" called me back & said why didn't I wait to let her call me back. She was very very rude. I explained what happened & told her we had another duct cleaner come to our home that very day, told us a $129 price then upped it to $212 so we sent that cleaner away. Diane said arrogantly "well if that's how you treat people WE DONT WANT YOU as a customer". When I complained to her "boss" (who's probably her relative), he condoned her rudeness & basically said he didn't need ME as a customer as he had 20,000 loyal customers. What an unprofessional company! I would NEVER deal with them.

This vendor charged me the cost of cleaning the chimney to give me a DIRE prognosis. He did no work. He referred me to another company which I called but they did not return my call, In the meantime I did research on the site of organization that certifies chimney repair vendors (this company is certified) and the federal governments site. I called other vendors and had the chimney cleaned and have now contracted for repairs that fall in line with expectations. The reports given to me by this vendor were dire and also incorrect.

This customer lives in a house from the early 1900's... The fireplace has never been maintained properly and is a serious fire hazard. She booked a chimney sweep and or inspection. The condition of her chimney was so bad that sweeping it was not possible without remediation first. This customer was searching for someone to tell her what she wants to hear. The certified sweep that went to this house has been certified for over twenty years and she just didn't like the information she was given. Major fire hazard here. Not willing to assume the liability for this type of homeowner! Dangerous!!

This is the 2nd or 3rd time I have used them. They are always very professional and courteous. The owner did the actual sweep and was very willing to educate me on the process I tend to ask a lot of questions. They are very honest and don't try to upsell you on anything. I will definitely continue to use them for my chimney and dryer vent needs.

Receptionist was really aggravating on the phone when she was in her words "educating me" on chimney sweep. Then proceed to hang up on me.
Description of Work: Called to request for a sweep and the receptionist got really nasty and then proceeded to hang up on me over pricing. The company was charging me $250+ for a chimney sweep. Asked why so high and receptionist was "trying to educate" me in certified chimney sweep and could not explain difference between what certified chimney sweep and regular sweep entails.

I have used other companies in the past who only used a shopvac to suck lint through my dryer's vent. Marvin from Blackbeards followed the vent up to the attic and pulled it apart to clean all the way to the roof. THANK GOODNESS they did because they found it nearly FULL of lint. At least three feet came out when he pulled apart the seam. Needless to say I was shocked and appalled by the poor job other companies have done. And very happy that I didn't need to buy a new dryer (thought it was on its last leg at that point). So not only did they save my life from a fire, they also saved me a lot of money on a new dryer. THANK YOU!!!

I requested a dryer vent cleaning. Their first available date was 30 days in the future and they demanded I give them a credit card to hold an appointment on that date 30 days in the future! They would not allow cancellation under any circumstances and would charge my credit card even if I canceled 29 days in advance. Never heard of a dryer and chimney company with such miserable policies. Decided not to use them. They didn't particularly want to come to my home either which is in Middlesex County and which they advertise themselves as serving. I will find someone else.

??? Don't have a clue who this person is. First of all we we do not service that area. Second we do not advertise, and if we did would not say we service that area. I would love to see the advertisement she is referring to, and third but most important of all we do not and never did take credit cards. Our real customers know that. Lots of people call us from towns outside of our service area. When someone calls to set an appointment, the first thing we ask is where they live. If its not in our serving area, we simply let them know. NORMAL people say thank you and move on. This person may have called us but based on the fact that we do not accept credit cards and do not advertise, it sounds like she has us mixed up with someone else. Once again Angie's list will post anything from anyone without doing any research to see if the claim has any merit.

I booked the service with another contractor.
Description of Work: Very rude on the phone with a bad attitude.I called last week to schedule an appointment for 1 of my rentals. I asked her to call my client to set up a convenient time for the appointment. She responded that I should have my tenant call her. Mt tenant called to up the time, but Diane insisted that I call her first. When I called her back a few minutes later, she got nasty with me. She told me that she does not do any billing for the to be done and starting to yell at me and tell me to call someone else. I did call another contractor and the work was scheduled for the same price; but with a company that appreciates the business. Diane acted over the phone as if she was being bothered, and hung up.

Once again out of 5000 service calls per year someone is using Angie's list to say bad things about our company because we wont let them tell us how to run our company. This customer has used us before and KNOWS it is our policy to be paid at the time of service. We do not bill and never have. His tenant called our company to set an appointment for service and when she was told it was payable at the time of service. Her response was " I am just a tenant.. my landlord is going to pay for the service." The tenant stated she wanted to set the appointment anyway. The office manager advised her to call her landlord first, before setting the appointment to make sure that the payment would be there at the time of service. [member name removed] only lives a few blocks from this rental unit and could have easily brought payment to the tenants house as he has done in the past. She was advised to call us back after she spoke to her landlord and then set the appointment. Instead, The landlord called my office. He was ranting and raving about our horrible customer service because its absurd for any company to expect to get paid at the time the service is performed. He was told that it's always been pay at the time of service and reminded that he was aware of that from past appointments with our company. At that time [member name removed] stated " This indicates that Blackbeard's does not trust their customers." It was at this point that he was told he had a lot of nerve calling us up to yell at us for expecting payment when the job was done and he was told to SEEK SERVICE ELSEWHERE. We are not interested in doing business with HIM or ANYONE else who is not interested in paying us at the time of service. We are a small business that performs an excellent service. A large percentage of our customers are landlords. Some are even out of state or in other countries. None of the thousands of other landlords have had any problems with our payment policy. That's the real story!

WORST TREATMENT FROM A COMPANY EVER!!!! I have a stacked washer/dryer unit in my condo in a closet. Blackbeard's Services LLC had been out previously for routine cleaning services on my dryer vent. I had them come to do another cleaning service and to put a guard on the vent to prevent birds from getting in. (Cost me $174) However, they hadn't re-connected my dryer properly the last time they serviced it for me (as I learned from the technician who came last week) and I now have to pay someone to come out and properly clean out my whole dryer unit as it is now a fire hazard. The actual service was sloppy and they left a mess (that I had to clean up, both inside my home and outside) When my father called to speak to someone about the dryer having not been hooked up properly at the time of the last service, a woman by the name of Diane Hoyt immediately started screaming at him, hung up on him, called him back and screamed at him and again hung up on him. I then called to speak to someone and was met with the same disrespect, foul language and was hung up on. I called back and the technician that was at my house picked up the phone and immediately started yelling at me, repeatedly spoke over me every time I tried to ask or say anything and I was then told to go F*** myself".

We have been waiting for this review. The day of her service we were called to her house because she had a birds nest in her vent and wanted to get it cleaned out and a bird guard installed. Her and her father were there. We did a fantastic job and I explained to her that she needed more service because her vent was not connected properly and lint was collecting behind the dryer and creating a fire hazard situation. At that point she admitted that her boyfriend had been behind the dryer working on it and I told her that I found tape and materials that my company does not use. In addition I told her that she should get the dryer vent cleaned and inspected more often because it has been FIVE years since we were there. She understood she needed more service and we do not move stackable dryers from closets. I again told her how important it would be to get additional service for safety and that it was a fire hazard. She was very happy and so was her father. We indicated on her receipt that it was a fire hazard. Still happy she wrote a check and signed the invoice that was turned into her association. A WEEK LATER her father called my office yelling and screaming at my office staff about how he now wants us to come back and provide more service for free probably because her association is making her correct the fire hazard she lives in. He went on to say that he would use Angies list to harm my company if we did not do what he wants. We obviously refused to be bullied on the threat that he would use this forum to force us to provide additional service for free. Later in the day the young lady who lives there and signed the invoice and wrote me a check on the day of the service called back over and over again yelling and screaming at my staff. I finally got on the phone and told her that IF SHE DID NOT STOP HARASSING MY COMPANY I WOULD BE FORCED TO CALL THE POLICE. This type of behavior cannot be tolerated and I had to end the call. We are happy we have a record of this because the only reason they published this review was to damage my company and many facts were left out for the purpose of trying to harm my company financially. That is what lawyers are for and if false accounts of the facts are continued to be published about my company I may be forced to seek legal action against this person and Angies list in a liable case against all parties involved. Customer Treatment On The Phone-not great. I had this organization do an inspection and dryer vent cleaning two years ago, and they did a great job. They advised me I needed to change my dryer vent hose to metal. I never did the work as suggested. It is time for another inspection and I called them again because they were fair and reasonable the last time. I remember the woman from the last time I scheduled. Her name is Diane and she is abrupt but can be pleasant enough-at least I thought so from the prior appointment I made. It's funny, I remember her voice because she does have an abrupt manner, almost like she is in a rush. I had a lot of questions today-I do want to change my dryer hose as they had recommended before and asked for a high level estimate. I gave her a detailed description of my home's layout. Diane talked over me, was unclear on several issues, and when I asked for clarification on an estimate for the replacement of the dryer hose, she kept talking over me. I asked her to slow down, she became rude. It turns out, our Homeowner's Association sent the letter out to homeowner's with their name before she was ready to take appointments (which I had no control over, and frankly should not matter). She offered and appointment/estimate. I said I wanted to think about spending another $75 to 150 dollars, and that I wanted to double check the cost against another provider, because it seemed a bit high and she hung up on me. My guess is that business is either so good that they don't want or need to take the time to be polite, or that Diane is not happy to be working with the public. It is too bad, I actually feel the work these folks do at the home is great. But if your front office is rude, it tells you a lot about how much value you are as a customer. I immediately called another recommended provider and they took the time to listen and answer my questions without issue. They scheduled immediately, honored the price and even took a good deal of time to explain what they would do on their visit. I will review their services after my appointment.

As the owner of this company, I want to say that I am very disappointed that this former customer had to twist the facts to make us look bad, I am the one that instructed my office person to terminate the phone call after she had been on the phone for at least twenty minutes. This customer was extremely rude, nasty, and demanding. She left a message on our voice mail while we were on another call. Her call was returned within fifteen minutes after she left her message. This customer had no questions initially. It was my office person that brought up the repair needed from her last service in 2012. The customer stated that she did not want to spend $450 for the repair. It was our office that gave her the estimate of $75 to $150 depending on what was needed to make it right. My office person listened quietly while she described her situation only interrupting to ask some questions for verification. When all was said and done. My office offered to give her an appointment as soon as next week. The customer stated that was too soon for her. So she was given an appointment for the following week. She was getting a special discount rate and was instructed that the cancellation policy was three business days prior to the date of the appointment in order for her to keep her discounted rate. She stated that one day was good enough and said we were too difficult to work with. It was at this point that I as the owner instructed my office to terminate the call and not spend any more time with this person. I am aware of all that transpired because I was sitting next to the person in my office during the call. This customer is correct that we do provide excellent service but we reserve the right to refuse to provide service to anyone who is rude and disrespectful.

From my initial phone contact with Diane, through services performed by Marvin and his apprentice, Ian, I could not write a better review than what has been positively written before. In addition to being completely satisfied with the services, I truly appreciated the time Marvin spent educating me about my system.

They carefully, thoroughly cleaned my chimney, which is used frequently to burn wood from trees we have chopped down. They were impressed how lucky we were to have not had trouble for using the fireplace without regular cleanings. Must be because we only burn hardwood. They gave us pictures of the cracks up top and an estimate for repair.

My insurance covers HVAC replacement and the insurance company had no concerns with the replacement unit quality or cost - they thought it was all reasonable. |

Marvin was very thorough in his work and extremely neat. He wore shoecovers, had blankets thrown near the fireplace to catch all the debris. He also inspected the chimney after climbing on to the roof and found out that a squirrel had dug out a hole in the chimney (which was missed during home inspection!?). He recommended what needed to be done. We had never used a wood burning fireplace before and he answered all of our questions patiently. Very nice experience. Highly recommend their services. The receptionist, Diane was also very professional.

Melvin took before and after photos to show us what he had done and he and his assistant were meticulous with their work.
