Description of Work: Herbst removed and put in a new set up steps in front of our house. He worked all alone. The foundation appeared O.K., but as he finished & was leaving the job, he said, "Don't call me if the bricks turn white." I thought that was very odd. During the first rain, we realized that 2 steps leading up to the walkway weren't tilted correctly and now gather rain water. Also, in less than 3 months, the front step bricks turned white and looked terrible. Called him, he came and said a power washing would take care of it. We hired a professional person to do the power washing; it did not help at all. Now, the cement he used to put on the bricks and steps is cracked and a couple of the edges have broken off completely. We're called in two professional masonry companies to see what can be done and the news was bad. Both said the mason, Herbst, used inferior cement, thus the cracking, and that they've never seen so much white bleeding from the brick face. We are now stuck because the only thing we can do is wait till all the cement cracks and the bricks loosen and then we'll have to have the steps totally redone at a high cost. I wouldn't hire or recommend Herbst to anyone. With his prior warning, he knew the bricks were inferior quality (according to a company on Rt. 1, Edison, that sells bricks), as was his workmanship. The spacing between the walkway blocks is wrong as well and there are holes forming in the concrete.

Not satisfied at all. We spent a lot for bluestone steps and bricks. Were first told he could no longer get black bricks to match the red & black ones on the house. I told him other masons had installed red AND black bricks on our street. He then brought bricks and included a few black ones. He built an excellent foundation BUT the quality of the bricks he used are terrible. Before he left the job he said that the bricks may turn white because they were taken where there is salt. Well, they did turn white, but also the g*** he used to put in the bluestone spilled onto many of the bricks. Because the bricks look terrible in front of the steps, I took a photo and went to a nearby store that carries bricks. They said the bricks looked used and of very poor quality and bricks shouldn't 'bleed' white thru them. I called him back and he said they were O.K., but the 'stain' was moss. Not true. Had 2 other masons here to see if they could do anything but they both said the quality of the bricks was the poorest they've ever seen so we're left with ugly bricks turning white and dark g*** on them from the bluestone above each landing. I'd never recommend this mason again. My neighbor had her steps redone a month later with another mason and they look clean and neat. We feel we were duped -- for the brick store said masons always ask the customer to go and pick out bricks they like - and would never bring used bricks for a new renovation.
