Everything went according to what Jeff said it would be. The finished work was excellent craftsmanship and the new look was fabulous. He's neat and appreciates the aesthetics of your home.
Description of Work: fine carpentry work. Jeff framed out the opening between our living and dining rooms with various moldings (trim work). He consulted with me in the design. The work was superior and his work was always neat. He also 'revisited' the trimwork on the living room side of the front door, improving the aesthetics of the door.

Jeff and his team demo'd our existing bathroom down to the studs, then rebuilt everything- plumbing, drywall, electrical, tiling, and painting. Due to several delays in getting our supplies from other vendors, Jeff was flexible and accomodating! Our only dissatisfaction was with Jeff's subcontracted plumber who caused an avoidable water leak which Jeff repaired. Overall, our project required considerably more time to complete than originally anticipated but we are very happy with the final result.

I found Jeff thanks to all the raving reviews I read on Angie's list so you think - does he really need one more?!?! Well, yes (although it took me so long to post this and that's entirely my fault!). So firstly, why did I pick Jeff? I met with 3 contractors, and he was not the cheapest. However, he did take the time to listen to exactly understand what I really dreamed of ( I was redoing my bathroom). Afterwards, he took time to look around at possibilities based on how my house was built and organized and made really creative and great suggestions - because of his knowledge and experience of building, he was able to see opportunities that I had no idea about. The result is amazing! As with all renovation projects, there were some hiccups and delays but Jeff handled it all wonderfully. He is always prompt to return messages or calls if not immediately available. He makes sure you're 120% happy, and will do everything he can to fix problems if they arise. He stayed within the price he quoted me, so no surprise there. Moreover, Jeff and everyone working for him is extremely nice and pleasant to interact with. I had absolutely no issue having them in my house for extended periods of time without being there. I'm planning on renovating my kitchen next, and I've already asked him to discuss next steps. I do not think there is any better testimony than this!!! I've also warmly recommended him to a friend. I think his strongest quality as a contractor is that he really takes time upfront to listen to what your wishes are and works towards making you as happy as possible. I am very happy indeed with how everything turned out.

I called him repeatedly and finally got him. We discussed our project and then set up an appointment. He did a thorough walk through of our condo and discussed the job with us in detail, but said he was so busy that he wouldn't be able to do the job till May (it was November/December at that time). We said OK, but requested an estimate of the job to decide if we wanted to do it at all. He said OK, wrote down the details, including my email address, and then never called or emailed us back. I called and emailed him several times after that, but never heard back from him. He's a very nice man, and we had a lot in common with him. We talked to him for quite awhile after he did the walk through and estimate. It was nice. But, we didn't appreciate him not calling us back for the job, and found it quite unprofessional. Despite liking him, respecting his skills, and wanting him to do our job, we would not hire him to do our job(s).

Jeff came to us from a personal reference of some close friends whom he had performed work with. We bid this job out to two other contractors and Jeff's pricing came in the middle. We went with Jeff based on his trust worthy nature and his ability to establish a vision of our project complimentary to our homes existing style. He also lived in town and that provided us some added comfort he was a neighbor. Jeff was on site every day and on time. He completed tasks when he said he would and did not nickel and dime us on little changes in scope. Although we did not use his stone mason he was more than willing to work with the contractor we found. In fact when we encountered issues with the new stone mason Jeff was more than willing to solve issues and work through the problem. Most contractors would have walked away. On Day 1 of the demo we burst a pipe and Jeff took full responsibility for it and wound up refinishing our kitchen floor which was most impacted by the damage. He is clearly concerned with his brand and leaving every job with a satisfied customer. Jeff is now our go to contractor for all things home related.
Description of Work: Jeff was contracted to renovate a few rooms in our home. First room: family bathroom from subfloor through tile and finish. Second room was creating opening up our kitchen to the family room with a breakfast bar

We needed our wooden stairs to our basement repaired. Jeff was the only person quoting that listened and geared his work towards my information. I let everyone know that we would not be in the building long term. All of the other quotes involved new materials or total replacement which made their quotes much higher. Jeff said that he could make the steps safe and functional again without any new wood...and he was correct! They are stable, safe and functional...and they look great. Jeff came as promised and delivered his work ahead of schedule. He is a true professional and really loves what he does.
Description of Work: Repair to our wooden steps going into our basement.
Based on Angie?s List reviews, we hired Jeff Sauerman to renovate our powder room. It proved to be an excellent choice! After listening to what we wanted to accomplish, Jeff offered a variety of creative suggestions for us to consider ? many of which we chose to use. With return phone calls, emails, and in-person conversations, Jeff was incredibly responsive to our questions and concerns. Not only did he assure us that he wanted us to be completely happy with the end product, but he followed through ? down to the last detail. His work was neatly done, and he expects that same standard from his sub-contractors. As an example of his neatness, on the day that he had gutted the powder room, when we came home, we were amazed to see that the adjacent rooms were spotless. Throughout the process, Jeff acted in a completely professional manner. He explained that his prices are competitive, and he did provide a reasonable estimate for all of the work. Additionally, we could rely on Jeff to show up when he said he would. The job was completed within the timeframe he had outlined from the outset. Jeff was truly a pleasure to work with! We strongly and enthusiastically recommend his work!
Description of Work: The job consisted of gutting our powder room, and then re-tiling the floor, upgrading the electrical service, and then replacing the walls and ceiling, installing a new vanity, sink, and toilet, as well as painting the walls and ceiling. In the course of the job, we asked Jeff to do some additional work, including upgrading the wiring of an upstairs bathroom which was directly above the powder room, and installing a new sink, faucet and disposal in the kitchen. He had no problem dealing with the change in scope of the project.
Jeff and team did it again! After Irene, we sustained major water damage in the basement and dining room above due to a roof leak that developed during the storm. Having had a previously great experience with Jeff, we turned to him once again. Jeff was able to work with us in our limited insurance reimbursement budget plus minor supplement to do a terrific job that actually left both the dining room and especially the basement actually looking much better than they had before the storm hit us. Jeff is the only "inside" contractor we have ever used who consistently maintains his workspace so as to ensure that the mess does not encroach on the family space while the work is being done. He is also the only contractor we've ever used who shows up day after day to get the job done and stays in constant communication - if he gets delayed or has to finish another project, you always get a phone call, text, or email - you are never left wondering. My endorsement is unequivocal - if you have important inside contracting work to be done requiring a visibly and functionally great result, hire Jeff!
Description of Work: The specific work Jeff performed included removal of some waterlogged moldings and sheet rock (carpet and some moldings already removed by ServPro), reinstallation of new sheetrock and moldings, repainting of the spaces to match, installation of cabinetry to replace shelving and storage furniture that had to be discarded, and staining/finishing of everything in a top notch way. Combining the creativity of my wife with Jeff's ideas about how to make best use of unused cabinetry to make something really usable with nice aesthetics was a sure fire combination and really transformed our dismay from the storm damage into great satisfaction with the terrific results.

I called to make an appointment to do an estimate for some work for a house I'm buying. He told me he has a lot of work backed up and could not come out to do the estimation, but was willing to give me a ball park estimates over the phone when I describe the work that needs to be done based on the home inspection report. It serves the purpose for me to get some rough numbers to work with the sellers.

Initially, I had contacted another general contractor that I found on Angie's List. This other guy was friendly at first and told me that all estimates are free. However, when I actually scheduled him to come to the house before the closing, he surprised me and told me that because I didn't close yet, there would be a $425 charge for an estimate, which was refundable once I closed and hired him to do the work. I also got the feeling that this guy didn't want to show up for an estimate on a Friday afternoon. I promptly looked for another general contractor on Angie's List and came upon Jeff's company. True to his word, Jeff didn't charge for the estimate, worked around my busy schedule, and even showed up with his electrician on a Saturday to give me an estimate. Once he started, Jeff was always around even when he had subcontractors performing the work. If he wasn't physically there, he was only a phone call away. Jeff is very responsive to phone calls, and I appreciated that he was there for the initial plumbing, electrical, and building inspections even when he didn't need to wait around in my house all day. He's a very friendly guy who provided me cost-effective options. As a first time homeowner, I can't begin to tell you how happy I am to have found someone who I can trust. His subcontractors are also awesome. His electrician has become my go-to guy for various electrical questions, and his plumbers went above and beyond my expectations. They even went to pick up a heavy vanity for me that was supposed to already be at the house during their lunchtime! His plumbers also discovered code violations in my house that my home inspector missed, and they fixed those problems on the same day. I have a feeling fixing these problems saved me a ton of money down the road. Even after he finished the job, Jeff came to fix things for me free of charge on the same day that I called him. I can't believe what a great general contractor he is and his work was perfectly done. I have referred Jeff to a family member who is buying a house and needs a number of renovations, and I will recommend him to my friends and family in NJ looking for a general contractor. Please give Jeff a call - you won't be disappointed!
Description of Work: I'm so happy I found Jeff and company through Angie's List. Jeff and his electrician John came to give me an estimate before I closed on my house, and we initially asked him to work on a small list of projects once we moved in. As probably any home owner can tell you, there's always more work to be done once you move in, so our list of projects slowly ballooned and Jeff always provided very reasonable pricing for every project. Jeff and crew converted a basement closet into a laundry room, installed motion-sensored exterior lights, upgraded electrical wiring throughout the house, partially renovated a master bathroom, and worked on various smaller projects.

Never received a call back.
Description of Work: I honestly can not rate this contractor. It would have been nice to see his work . However, I would like to share this. Mr Sauerman did come out to take a look at my basement for remodel on April 23, 2012. He said he would call within a couple of weeks with an estimate. Needless to say we are now in August 2012 and I have not heard from Mr. Sauerman. Not even an email or phone call even after I sent a second email asking him to please respond whether he was interested or not. I understand contractors are very busy this time of year. HOWEVER!, they should at least give a call or send an email with a response. This is just unprofessional for anyone to do. At least have the common courtesy to reply.

Everything went very well. Jeff was punctual, professional and responsive. I would be very happy to use him again.
Description of Work: Jeff and his crew dismantled some 100-year old columns on my porch that were coming apart (think pieces of wood put together like a barrel, except straight), refurbished them, installed new wood bases for all of the other columns and repainted every column. It was very important to me that we reuse the existing (yet deteriorating) columns if possible, which Jeff was able to do. They now look like they will last another 100 years.

He and his assistants came the next Monday and took up the shower floor, brought in their plumber for confirmation that nothing else was wrong, (and found that the builder had cut some corners, and installed part of the drain upside-down!), and relined, rebuilt and retiled the floor like new. They also removed the water-damaged parts of the ceiling and wall below, and replaced and repainted them like new. One of the great things about Jeff was that they did the whole job stem-to-stern; they found the matching tile, they found the matching beadboard and paints, they just did it all. In a few days, we were good as new. They were very punctual, extremely knowledgeable and professional all the way, and very personable to have in my home for a week. They were obsessively neat, and cleaned up every day so you couldn't even tell they had been there! And I felt very comfortable leaving the house to attend to other business while they were working in it. We were totally happy with Jeff's service, and he will be the first one we call when we are ready to start refinishing our new basement in the near future. I would warn that he may not have the lowest-price estimate among the contractors you call, but it will be reasonable, and any extra expense will be well worth the investment if you have a fine home and are looking for really fine quality work.
Description of Work: Shortly after moving into a new home, we found water dripping from our sunroom ceiling, coming from a leak in the shower in the master bathroom above. When the wall ceiling were opened, it was obvious that the leak had been ongoing for a very long time, and had been concealed by the sellers. Our usual contactor was recovering surgery, so I called a few contractors (from Angie's List), and Jeff Sauerman responded immediately and came right out the next day. (Others didn't return my calls, or weren't available anytime soon.) Jeff thoroughly checked the plumber's "diagnosis" to confirm, then gave me an estimate to repair the shower and the water damage below it. While he had other projects booked, he said he had some "wait time" coming up on his current project, and could squeeze our job in the next week.
Jeff and crew were great to work with. Jeff is responsive, respectful, returns calls, on time etc. He had great ideas during the design phase of how to maximize the use of the space and listened to our needs. Jeff also was very respectful of our budget and had thoughtful ideas on where to splurge a bit and where to cut back. His vendors came through with incredible value for our money, especially in regards to the cabinets and counters. Another plus to Jeff is that he was present for all inspections. We kept existing dining room hard wood floors and Jeff kept them protected through out the process. He does not do vinyl floors, but he did prepare the kitchen floor area to the specifications asked. I would definitely use Jeff again.
Description of Work: Gutted the kitchen and dining room, took down the wall separating them, and remodeled into one cohesive space. Included: Gutting kitchen and dining room, except dining room floor electrical - including adding lights to the adjacent living room plumbing installing all new cabinets (stock) granite counter top tile back splash new trim

The job went beautifully. Jeff and his colleague were responsive, on time and professional. When I had a minor concern after the job, they came immediately to fix it, which I greatly appreciated. I have called him to get estimates for other projects, and when he is unavailable in the timeframe in which I needed the work done, he has given me references for other contractors.
Description of Work: Jeff and his colleague repaired the rotted sill plate on the corner of our 1873 house. This involved inspecting to determine the extent of damage, jacking up that section of the house, replacing the rotted wood, and sealing everything back up.

Jeff was one of two highly-rated contractors we found through Angie's List. The other contractor's prices were lower than Jeff's in certain aspects, but Jeff was far more responsive to us, was more available to meet with us, was better able to work around our busy work schedules, and a better fit with our vision and personalities. Jeff may not be the cheapest contractor out there, but we believe that you get what you pay for, and Jeff definitely is not the most expensive contractor, either. He is fairly priced for the workmanship, attention to detail, and overall professionalism he brings to the job. He did work with us on price on certain jobs he performed for us. We trust him completely, such that we have left him a key to our house and do not hesitate to leave him and his crew alone in our house to get their work done. We recommend Jeff for virtually any home improvement job. Jeff is our go-to contractor; we have used him for many different jobs over the course of the past year, and we will be using him for all of our future work, which will include a kitchen remodeling, reinsulating our attic, installation of new front porch entryway, and fully-finishing our basement. Plus, every specialized contractor that Jeff has recommended (plumber, mason, electrician) has been equally great to work with.
Description of Work: We have been using Jeff for about a year and will continue to use him as our preferred contractor for any future jobs. Among the following work Jeff has performed for us: Remodel 1/2 bathroom (including plumbing installation, tiling, painting, bathroom accessory mounting); Install new tile floor connecting entryway, kitchen, bathroom, and dining room; Create kitchen pantry from closet (including painting, light installation, installation of melamine shelving); Install quarter-round molding throughout house; Sand/refinish wood floor; Replace back door and replace back steps with new deck (included paint/stain); Install replacement bathroom fan/light; Replace kitchen cabinet and trash receptacle with slide-out kitchen trash drawer; Repair storm-damaged siding on garage and house (hurricane damage); Repair water damage in kitchen ceiling from hurricane (included identifying leak source and patching hole in roof); Knock down wall in basement to open up a basement room (drywall removal); and, Paint touchups throughout house. In addition, Jeff coordinated the following work for us through his recommended plumber and mason: Conversion from oil to gas heat (included removal of 900 lb. turn-of-the-century oil boiler); Dig up concrete basement floor and replace iron pipe with pvc and installation of backflow valve in floor; Installation of French drain and sump pump in basement; Repair of concrete and waterproofing of stairs leading into basement; Waterproofing of basement walls; Repair of top of brick chimney; and, Installation of bluestone front step over existing concrete step. Grading and relaying of brick patio pavers.
After looking for nearly a year we purchased a 1923, 2.5 story, 3 bedroom, 1.5 bath, brick Dutch colonial with steam heat in Fair Lawn, NJ that was mostly original. It was going to be a big job to make the home livable again. I am a well educated engineering manager who is picky about getting things done the right way. My wife and I have experience doing home renovation projects ourselves however this one would be a total renovation/remodel and needed to be professionally done. Because of the condition of the home we were very concerned that the farther we got into the project the more added cost there would be. We did not want this to be a financial disaster for us. Also we decided to do the work in three phases Phase 1) Renovate entire home excluding the kitchen and bath (now) Pull out all of the plaster and lathe walls and ceilings and replace with new sheetrock, repair structural damage, remove and replace and add new electrical wiring/lights/outlets/smoke detectors in the home and bring it to code, insulate the walls and ceilings, add central AC ducting, replace 15 windows, replace all interior and exterior doors, replace all of the trim and moldings, paint the trim, walls and ceilings and repair and refinish the woods floors Phase 2) Central AC (later) Phase 3) Kitchen and baths (later) We interviewed several construction contractors we had met while looking for a home, did walk throughs and received estimates however I was not getting the feeling that these were the right people to do the work. I signed up for Angie?s list and started calling contractors. When I first talked with Jeff Sauerman I knew he was not like the others we had spoken with. Jeff reviewed the home for the Phase 1 Renovation and found things that the others missed. His quoted price came in the middle of all of the quotes we had received and he agreed that he could make our timing. We asked Jeff to do the project and he started on time. In talking with Jeff we learned that he grew up in Ridgewood/Ho Ho Kus. His work reflects the style and quality levels expected in those areas. Jeff found things in our home that had been changed from original and recommended that we change them back. The results were great. Jeff is an artist, a craftsman as well as a businessman. As an example, the trim and moldings that Jeff recommended and how they would be put together on the windows, doors and hallways combined with the new doors that Jeff helped us pick out transformed the house. The results were beyond what we expected - outstanding work done on schedule and at the quoted price. We had no unexpected scheduling or cost changes. Jeff does much of the work himself with his crew. Some things like electrical and sheet rock he has contractors do. The contractors Jeff uses are top shelf. They did outstanding work. We passed the Fair Lawn building inspections the first time thru. We would highly recommend Jeff Sauerman Contracting. We think that this project could not have gone much better than it did. Jeff is a really good guy. He?s interesting to talk with, he?s knowledgeable and he and I had allot in common. My wife and I plan on contracting him again for the remaining work on this home and hopefully other projects in the future.
Description of Work: Pull out all of the plaster and lathe walls and ceilings and replace with new sheetrock, Repair structural damage, Remove and replace and add new electrical wiring/lights/outlets/smoke detectors in the home and bring it to code, Insulate the walls and ceilings, Add central AC ducting, Replace 15 windows, Replace all interior and exterior doors, Replace all of the trim and moldings, Paint the trim, walls and ceilings Repair and refinish the woods floors Add missing gutters

Response from Jeff Sauerman Contracting
It was a pleasure to develop a working relationship with this family. As with many of my clients we were able to create a vision of the finished product that was a result of thier style and my experience working on homes in the area. Now that the project is completed I'm not sure if I should refer to them as my clients or as my friends. Both are true and this is part of the pleasure of my profesion. To meet good people and enhance thier dwelling, increasing the value as an asset and a home. As I look at the reviews on Angie's List and recal the people that I have been fortunate to work for , I can't help but smile. I consistantly am comenting to my team that we are lucky in that all of our customers are nice, pleasant people. I look foward to future projects with these members and all my clients from Angie's List Sincerly , Jeff Sauerman
It was a pleasure to work with Jeff and I plan to work with him again in the future. When Jeff met me at the house to get the explanation of the services we contemplated so he could draft an estimate, he arrived on time and took detailed notes. When we received his estimate, it was detailed and thoughtful. He had paid attention to the things that were important to us and clearly considered the costs when developing the estimate. Other estimates we received did not have the same level of detail so they didn't give us confidence that the price accurately reflected what it was going to cost. Jeff's estimate was indeed accurate. Once work began, Jeff was easily reachable for any concerns via cell, text or email. He was enthusiastic about taking my calls and addressing concerns or new/revised requests. He patiently explained the work he was doing or having done and made us feel comfortable about asking him to have work refinished or fixed on the few occasions it was necessary. Jeff understood how we wanted to approach our projects as well. We wanted to take a practical approach to our renovations and have the work look good, but we didn't want to make unnecessary expenditures either. Jeff never tried to push us to do something we didn't want to get done or to give up on something we decided we wanted, but at the same time, he tactfully advised us of options for addressing issues without incurring unnecessary costs. He probably could have made more money if he advised us differently but I think he wins more business longer term as a result of the way he approaches things. We were very satisfied with the quality of the work done by Jeff and his team as well as that done by the subcontractors that Jeff selected. There are some additional projects we have had done where Jeff introduced us to specialists to handle the projects and left himself out of it rather than artificially creating more business for himself. I think that is a standup way to do business and a good way to build long term trust. As a new home owners, there were times where we had an issue and didn't know what to do about it where Jeff would be a very helpful with ideas. For example, we had a pantry closet where the shelves were old, unsightly plywood shelves and we wanted to have new shelves made. I asked Jeff for some ideas, and he suggested getting some inexpensive Elfa shelves from The Container Store that he could install. It was the perfect fit functionally and for our budget and we had never heard of Elfa before. One thing to keep in mind is that Jeff will inspect the quality of the work, but at the end of the day the home owner needs to pay attention to the details to ensure you address every issue that may come up. I think this is true for any contractor. Overall, it was a great experience working with Jeff and I look forward to working with him again.
