We chose Randolph Marble and Granite (RMand G) for several reasons. First, the price was the most reasonable. Second, other places wanted the old countertops out as much as 10 days before the new ones would be installed (which means essentially no kitchen for 10 days). With RMand G, I had a contractor remove the old countertops, sinks and faucets on one day and RMand G came in the next day to do the installation. Third, we got a good feeling from Mel, the man in charge. Fourth, other places wanted to sell us sinks and faucets at prices that seemed really steep. Mel suggested looking at Kraus sinks. They looked better than what others wanted to sell me and were priced lower as well. I ended up buying Kraus sinks and Moen faucets (my house was built with Moen faucets and they may not have been the most attractive ones, but they all still work perfectly after 19 years.) Mel showed up on time to do the measurements and five business days later, he and two helpers came at the appointed time and did the installation. Looks great. We encountered two problems, but they were both quickly rectified. First, the hole cut into the bathroom countertop for the vessel sink was too big and there was no way to mount the sink. Apparently the sink we chose was different than most. Within two business days, Mel came back and cemented a ring of quartz into the hole to narrow it. With the sink in place, the repair is completely invisible. Second, there was a splotch of color on one section of countertop that my wife didn't like. I thought it was actually part of the semi-random pattern but my wife thought that it was a manufacturing defect. Either way, it didn't look great. My wife called Mel and within two business days he came back with a new countertop section and put in in place. No muss, no fuss, no questions asked and no extra charge. I can't complain about the problems that arose because problems are guaranteed to come up in a kitchen makeover. What I think separates a good contractor from a bad one is how well he deals with the problems. i've worked with too many contractors who were difficult to impossible to get back once they were paid, but RMand G came through. The only thing that was an issue in dealing with RNand G is that it's essentially a one-man show and Mel is frequently out of the showroom doing installations. There's usually a lady in the showroom when Mel is out, but a message that I left with her never got delivered which led to some confusion later on, but nothing that couldn't be taken care of. So if you need to know anything or to communicate anything important, make sure you talk to Mel. If he's out, he'll call you back.
