Please watch out if you’re going to call this Benjamin Franklin plumbing. Wade, the technician came out to look at our heater. He seemed polite and checked the unit for a few minutes but then mostly spent his time writing up estimates and tried to sucker us into paying thousands to remove and install a new heating system (Navien unit) which is only about 4 years old. When I asked if he could call Navien who would provide video support before we determine we need an entirely new system installed he said there was nothing to check with Navien, saying “something was wrong with the piping in the house and the unit is working perfectly”. When I asked why he didn’t stay on hold and at least try to see if there was anything they can walk him through and that a new system does seem right, he was ready to just walk out without saying anything. I tried to talk to him and ask why he would not try to fix the heating, he just said he’s not interested “in getting married to the unit”, which I think he was referring to fixing a unit that was “poorly” installed which it’s not. I was completely confused because he had me sign an agreement to pay $265 upfront to get on the call with Navien to troubleshoot and in the next sentence he was saying there was nothing wrong but he would provide an estimate for the only option I have which was to remove and install a unit. The heat was working with no issues until just last week when someone came out to replace an old radiator and had drained the system. Thankfully, I got an honest plumber out here who took a 10 minutes look at the system and knew right away the air vents on our baseboard heater ends just needed to be vented and immediately we got heat. This is just unbelievable. All it takes is someone with some brains and honesty. It was truly a blessing in disguise that he left the way which saved us from a ridiculous 18-20K for a new heating unit!

Upon arrival, the plumber (Mike) quoted me $1,800 to complete the work. Not knowing any better as a first time homeowner, I hired him to complete. A few weeks after, I hired a different plumber for a different project in my home who reviewed the work and said it was done very sloppy. He did not properly sweat the connections, as well as did not properly support the new lines so they would not crack in the long run. The new plumber quoted me a cost of $500 to complete what the old plumber did and told me that historically this company seeks out people they can rip off (the one and done job customers). I am extremely unsatisfied with this company and would never hire them again, as well as I would tell and warn everyone not to use them. This company should not go after the one and done job, they should be looking for repeat customers. Remember, word of mouth goes a long way and I will be telling everyone how sloppy the job was done and how much of a rip off the price was.
Description of Work: I had the plumber (Mike) come to my home to re-pipe hot and cold water supply valves under my kitchen sink. I have a basement so the pipes were all very accessible, as well as was doing a kitchen renovation so the kitchen area under the sink was completely torn out and bare.

Sunday of 4th of July weekend, family room toilet backed up and caused a flood. No amount of plunging freed the clog. after the clean up my wife and I felt we had to wait until Monday to have a shot at getting a plumber. Then the washing machine, directly behind the bathroom, started to drain dirty water from a wash, into the slop sink. the dirty water came up from the toilet bowl and we had a second flood. My wife went on line and saw the 24 hour emergency add for Ben Franklin Plumbing. She called the number left a message and within 5 minutes someone called back. I explained what happened and the woman on the phone said one of there trucks would be there in about 90 minutes. Well in less than an hour the truck pulled up, and we were on our way to getting it fixed. The Plumber (Alan) was very professional, courteous and explained everything he was going to do after looking over the whole system. he prepared an estimate and I signed off. the work took about an 1 - 1.5 hours. He tested it and cleaned up everything. We could not have been happier. I will be using Ben Franklin Plumbing for all our plumbing needs. Joe
Description of Work: Removed the toilet, used an electric snake to remove the clog. The snake went about 36 feet right to the main house trap. the toilet bowl was very old and the plumber asked if we wanted him to put it back in place. I was going to upgrade it with him and I did not have to dispose of it myself.anyway so he took it away

First I would like to say having an emergency on Memorial Day Weekend, and a Sunday to boot, is nothing you ever want any part of. There had to be 7 plumbers in my area who just do not work on Sunday. Well. The first positive was that after calling in and telling my tale of woe, I received a call back in 5 minutes! This was noonish. They stated I would have someone at my house between 1-5 pm. At 1:55 I received a call that I would have a plumber at my house within 40 minutes. 2:20 he arrived. We discussed symptoms, and what I had attempted to repair myself, which obviously did not work. Plus he said the big box store sold me the wrong parts for the job. He gave me the parameters of the costs associated with the repair. We agreed to take the less expensive route, and if that didn't work out......we would proceed to the more involved repair. Bill tried to save me some $$$ but my shower was just too compromised. Moved onto the more expensive repair. All the time he was a perfect gentleman, apologizing for having to take the more expensive route. He was done with the whole job by 5:40. Amazing. Worked immaculately. I had not planned on such an expensive job, but I tried the home repair approach, which failed. And I have an 87 year old living with me who was in plain words, FLIPPING OUT, because I had to shut the main off since I was not sure if after trying to repair the shower myself, if anything was leaking into the wall. You will do anything to stop that kind of drama. Very, very satisfied with Ben Franklin's service. Appreciative. Thankful. Indebted. Would be happy to refer them, and use them again.
Description of Work: Bill made very attempt to make the less expensive repair work but it just wasn't going to happen. My shower had water pouring out of the faucet as if it was full on, except it was all the way off. He had to replace the shower valve which required cutting tile, removing a trashed housing and installing a brand new system.

They went above and beyond. They were very clean and wore booties to make sure they did not track in any dirt. It was a very professional service. They did charge me a $3 charge for gas. They also did not give me a receipt. They said they would email it to me, which they did. This is ok but I do not have a printer right now.

Ben Franklin Plumbing came out to intall tankless water heater and serviced my furnace. Came out and completed service in one day. They wer very professional they did all the services they said they were going to do.I am familiar with the industry practices and I would say they were good with there business practices. Price seemed a little high, but the only gripe is they used a gauge made in China that does not work, and not readable.

Benjamin Franklin came to do work on the house within a short 90 minute notice. Two guys came and they were very professional and wore these plastic things on there shoes when they walked into our house. Pretty funny considering I've hired other plumbers before and they never do that. They just walk in without a care in the world. Anyway these two guys explained to us exactly the problem within 5 minutes and they just fixed it.... quickly. After the work was done they explained their other services and what can do for us in the future in case we needed additional services. I think their cost is a little more than normal plumbers but you get what you pay for in my opinion. I would recommend this company to my friends and family.
Description of Work: We had a leak in our pipes that was going straight into the basement. We had called a couple plumbers but ultimately they didn't have the time to take a look at it the same day. We called these guys because they were able to see the leak and fix it the same day. Not sure exactly what caused the leak but in 2 short hours the work was done.

My regular plumber was away this weekend when I called him to replace the sump pump in the basement. I called this company based on reviews I saw on this website. The plumber showed up and announced that the visit would cost $80 whether he did the work or not. The estimate for the sump pump replacement was $475 in addition to the $80 visit. I asked for a breakdown of labor and parts and he wouldn't provide this information stating that's not the way they do business. The plumber appeared to be young and inexperienced and I was put off by the price so I paid for the $80 visit and sent the guy packing. Since then I had my usual plumber come over and he told me it would cost $375 total.
Description of Work: No services were performed. I was annoyed by the high price of the estimate and the apparent inexperienced plumber so I opted to pay for the $80 visit and use a different plumber.

They called the morning of the install and arrived a half hour after the call. I'm a retired contractor and was thoroughly impressed by the level of professionalism. They where polite to a fault. Their work area was kept clean and organized. Alex insisted on repairing the hole left by the old water heater vent even when I told him that I would take care of it. When they where done they left the work area as if they where never there. I have future plumbing projects and I fully intend using them again.

They are great. They are very neat and clean. They put like the surgical booties on their work boots when they come into the house. They are very mindful and really respectful of your house. After they complete the job, they cleanup totally, a 100%. They are great and real easy to talk to. I would highly recommend them. We had a major drain problem right around when we moved in. We spent about $1500. They found it and they were quick as far as discovering the problem. They did a very neat job. They seemed very honest. I didn’t have any other quotes to compare because it was sort of an emergency situation. I have heard something about them from a friend. They were as advertised. They were right on time. They were very professional and you can't find anybody better than that.

In anticipation of our appointment my husband and I took time from work to gut the entire bathroom down to the studs. By the time 11am rolled around we had no bathroom in our one-bathroom household. Before we knew it 11am came and went and they never showed up. Getting nervous we repeatedly called the office and spoke with another woman. She said Wayne was out and that she had no way of contacting him. An hour later my husband called the office again and this time was able to speak with Joanne. She reassured us that no matter what time they arrived they would complete the work. To quote Joanne, "we will not stick you". We were happy to see their truck pull into our driveway at 4pm; unfortunately they told us that it was too late in the day to start the job. We were stunned. Had they just been honest with us earlier in the day we could have tried to find someone else, but instead they left us with no shower, toilet, or sink in a one-bathroom household at 4pm on a Friday. Nice way to not "stick" us. When I called and spoke with Joanne she was shocked to hear that they had left. She told me to hold on because she would transfer me to one of the owners right away. A few minutes later a guy named Wayne picked up the phone and asked to hear why I was so upset. After I told him what had transpired he told me very bluntly that "my guys have lives after 5pm". First off, that's not the answer you give a client that spent $11K with you 3 months prior for a tank-less water heater. Secondly, we didn't ask his guy to do the job after 5pm. We asked his guy to do the job at 11am. I explained to him what an awful state he was leaving us in and he just did not care. When I tell you this guy was cold, he was cold. He offered no apology. He just kept repeating that his guys have lives and that he "can't force them to work". After coming to the conclusion that Wayne has the people skills of a rat I abruptly ended our conversation. Two minutes later Wayne took it upon himself to call my husband on his cell phone to say that I "would not let him get a word in edge wise". When my husband tried to explain how upset we were over what they had done to us Wayne said he could "try to get this resolved". He called back 5 minutes later and said that he tried his best but that he couldn't get anyone here and that he could "try" to get someone here within a week. Did he really expect us to jump for joy at the thought of going without a functioning bathroom in a one-bathroom household for up to 7 days? This guy is just not playing with a full deck of cards. They advertise on their website that "If we are late for your appointment, we will pay you $5 per minute, up to $300!" My husband and I both lost the day from work waiting for them and we didn't get anything in return -- nothing -- not even a heartfelt apology. I will continually share our experience with my friends, family, colleagues, 17K twitter followers (@jendeedotnet), my clients and anyone else who is considering using this terrible company. I don't want anyone else to experience the horror of being left without a functioning bathroom in a one-bathroom home. My review is not libel or slander, it is just the truth based on actual events that took place on September 16th, 2011. If they wanted a nicer review they should have done the job they promised to do. I don't have to tell people to not use them, their karma will find them.
Description of Work: Benjamin Franklin Plumbing of Pompton Lakes had been to our home just a few months ago to install a tank-less water heater and was familiar with our plumbing and crawlspace setup. During that visit they failed to show up for the first appointment. On the second visit they performed the job along with their sister-company Mr. Sparky who handled the electrical requirements for the heater. However they began the work before telling us they changed their price from $5K to $11K. We had no choice but to go along with it since they had already begun the work. In the end we were relatively pleased with the overall work they performed so when we were ready to tackle our bathroom remodeling project we thought we should give them another try. My husband called them on September 9, 2011 and spoke with Joanne. He explained to her our plans for the bathroom and that we needed them to perform the rough-in for the new shower, toilet, and sink on Friday September 16, 2011. He explained to her that we were prepared to do all of the other work and that all they had to do was move existing pipes six inches to the left. Joanne said they were capable of providing this service on the day we requested and the appointment was made for 11am. She added that if there were any changes they would call us well in advance. There were no changes.

Bejamin Franklin advertises that if they are late for an appointment, they'll pay you. The plumber was 45 minutes late. This knocked $225 off the price.
Description of Work: Our furnace was inundated when Irene shut off our power then flooded our crawl space. Public Service shut off the gas to the furnace but we needed to have it checked out before we could turn it back on. Benjamin Franklin has been our plumber for years and set up an appointment for us at our convenience. He arrived, checked out the furnace, and determined the gas valve needed to be replaced. He was able to get the part immediately, completed the repair, and explained that a backup battery operated pump would not be feasible given the configuration of the crawl space under our home. He congratulated.us on our purchase earlier that day of a new, gasoline powered, electrical generator.

I would recommend their work very, very highly. The man who did the work was an older man. They responded on time and took away whatever I wanted to get rid of and the man did the work very competently and rapidly. Their prices might have been on the high side and that's the only objection I would have. I was very impressed with everything they did and I never had a malfunction with anything they did. The price seemed high for the last project, but I didn't get any other estimates so I could be wrong. They were always on time and they brag about that, they give you a financial reward if they are late. The quality of the work was great and they did the job rapidly and efficiently, they didn't stand around drinking coffee or anything.

We had a clogged toilet that we couldn't get unclogged. We called on a Monday morning and they had someone out in less than 2 hours. While there, the plumber noticed the sediment in our toilet tank, and asked if we use a well. We have lived here less than a year and weren't aware how often the pump filter needs to be changed. He changed it and showed us how to do it if we want to do it in the future. We were impressed by the friendliness and professionalism of the plumber and the office staff.
