Everyone involved was knowledgeable, friendly, prompt and cooperative. The owner John made the first visit for an estimate..he was prompt, friendly and helpful. Tammy, the bath designer, was invaluable. I could not have made all those decisions without her. All her suggestions (fixtures, tile, colors, etc.) were perfect and both baths are beatiful. Debbie at the office was always responsive. The renovation was scheduled so that I did not have one day without a working bathroom! All the craftsmen were prompt, friendly and skilled. All involved kept me informed of their progress. Any issues that arose were resolved without complaint and to my complete satisfaction. Bobby the foreman always returned calls immediately. His attention to detail is incredible.
Description of Work: I had two bathrooms completely renovated (a hallway bath and a small master bath). They were completely gutted and renovated - new tile, vanity, mirror, plumbing, subfloor, electrical, fixtures, etc.
The overall process was about as painless as possible. The only delays were getting the inspections done and snow days. the reason I gave them a B in cost is that they were higher priced than other bids. That said they are insured and bonded and give you a drawing of the proposed project. In my mind their services were worth the extra money, but I didn't consider their price to be outstanding thus the "B" grade. One comment for anyone doing this type or bigger job with any contractor. If you want the job done quickly and correctly, I highly recommend that someone with the authority to make decisions be available. There were some mistakes in the drawing that we resubmitted and to my knowledge our corrections were never added to the drawing. If my wife hadn't been home it's not clear to me that these mistakes might not have been incorporated in the work, requiring rework. In summary if the price doesn't bother you, I highly recommend JMC. They have done outstanding work for us.
Description of Work: JMC had remodeled two bathrooms for us over the last two years. This report focuses on the second job but the comments would be similar for the first. At the time of this service they had a roughly 10K package. They also gave an allowance for people willing to acquire everything themselves. We chose to go that route and purchased all the material except the tial from Lowes. JMC installed everything and painted the walls that weren't tileed. The workmanship was uniformly excellent. As important the job was scheduled and started within a day or so of the agreed upon date and completed in roughtly 15 business days. They provided the carpentry, tiling, electrical and plumbing work. The bathroom was gutted and the underflooring replaced.
Thorough estimate and presentation by owner of company. Work started on time and was finished on schedule. Work area kept clean. Workers were polite, efficient.
Description of Work: Demolished drywall and insulation in a garage attic room. Added R-30 insulation, replaced drywall, added electrical outlets and light switch, interior painting. Repaired exterior window sills.
As with the basement, we struggled with what we wanted. John was as patient, understanding and constructive as Solomon, in the face of unusually disparate personalities and vision of the home. Yet, he prevailed, designing the kitchen that fit our family and home perfectly. The design took a very long time. Demo, electricity and plumbing were accomplished quickly to our satisfaction until inspectors decided to make everything more expensive and complicated. JMC handled them with great professionalism, creativity and aplomb, while I remain furious. They built a new island, installed marble counter-tops and specialty cabinets. They made a new bar in the family room. The cabinets and appliances were installed and extraordinary unique carpentry made curved arches to link the kitchen with the family room. The results were stunning because of the quality of the design and the patience, professionalism and craft of their finished carpenter. I will never use anyone but JMC and I have two more projects to go!
Description of Work: An ancient kitchen was redesigned, spec'ed, demo'ed, built, assembled and installed, lighted, plumbed, finished, painted and delivered.
First they refinished the underlying concrete. They they let me put in a laminate floor. Then they refinished the rest of the floor and tiled it. They then finished the floor trim, built wonderful cabinets appropriate for the basement, upgraded pathetically old and decrepit stairs, put in railings, trimmed the pillars and painted the walls. John's vision was extraordinary. His workers were pleasant, responsive, utterly professional and accommodating. Their work was superb. It changed our house!
Description of Work: JMC helped me renovate my basement. I wasn't sure what I wanted and they supported me every step of the way, such that I ended up with a far better result than I could have imagined. The old carpet glued to the underlying concrete was removed, The concrete etched and a new layer poured. Laminate flooring was installed in half; tile was installed in the other half. Cabinets were built. Lighting put in. Stairs were strengthened and leveled. Railings were made. The staircase was enclosed properly.
I had my 35 year old kitchen totally gutted and remodeled. I made an initial appointment in the fall of 2010 and had a brand new kitchen by mid-February. John MacDougall, the owner, came to my home and gave me some really good ideas. I made an appointment with Tammy, the in-house kitchen designer, and she came up with a design that had unique solutions to my cabinet needs. I picked out the cabinets, flooring, countertops, backsplash, sink, faucet , windows and doors right in their showroom. That made it incredible easy. The demolition team that started the job showed up on time, put up zippered plastic separators in all the doorways that kept the dust to a minimum, and just got to work. Throughout the entire project, the workers (craftsman) came early, worked hard and cleaned up every evening. They were all very pleasant people to have in our home. In the end, we have a great kitchen, that we actually enjoy cooking in. I would definitely use JMC for future projects, and would recommend them to anyone interested in having remodeling done in their home.

We hired JMC based on their good recommendations but would never hire them again. My husband is now in the bathroom for a second day this weekend cleaning up their spackle work. All this would have been unnecessary if they had lined up the bathroom light, medicine cabinet and vanity right the first time. Would seem like a simple thing for an experienced contracting firm. But they were not even close to being lined up. Their answer was to cut new spaces and to spackle the original holes, some of which began to crack two weeks later. Also before we started the job, I noted that we had a very small bathroom and was concerned about losing space between our toilet and vanity which are placed across from one another. John assured me this would not be a problem. Yet when they installed the new toilet I did, indeed, lose a lot of space and had to purchase a new even smaller vanity, which had not been in our budget. Had I been alerted to this before they did the plumbing and sheetrock, I could have had them move the vanity to another wall. Then when I asked for an estimate to install a wall niche in the shower to hold shampoo and other bottles, I came home the next day to find that they had tiled the entire wall before they ever gave me an estimate. When they "finished" the job, we were left to fill in nail holes and clean up all the dust from the walls from all the spackling. Not quite what I expected for a $11,000 price tag for a very small bathroom. I could go on and on. Just be aware that despite good reviews, these people appear much better than they are in reality.
Description of Work: Complete bathroom remodel, including new floor and wall tile, bathtub and toilet and removal of a closet.

Response from JMC Home Improvement Specialists
It should be noted that this report on Angie’s List was filed prior to the finish of the job. The home is a converted bungalow and had been worked on by many non-professionals which is typical for this type of home. During the initial walk-through with the customers, the owner told the Project Manager we would find problems due to it being an old home with poor construction, including pointing out that the kitchen cabinets were out of level. We were hired to remodel a small bathroom. Shortly after starting the job, we found plumbing problems which had to be rectified to bring the plumbing to code; conditions which were clearly indicated to the owners and that they would have to pay for anything out of code to be brought up to code. The homeowner’s response was very difficult; she screamed at our project manager and stated that I, John MacDougall, the owner, had been in her attic to inspect the plumbing at the initial site visit. This is not true; I had never been in her attic. After the bathroom was gutted, we found that we needed to build out one wall by ¾” of an inch to make the walls plumb (level both horizontally and vertically). In addition, the toilet waste could only be placed in a specific place so that the waste pipe would not interfere with the beams on the floor. This meant the toilet would be closer to the vanity by 1 ½”. We spoke to the owner about this and she emailed me her concerns about losing space between an already tight area. We responded that we would use an offset flange and that the toilet would be tight to the wall. As a result, she would only lose ¾”, as needed to make the walls straight. The homeowner claimed that we were giving her a toilet that was much bigger than the old one. No one, including the homeowners, measured the existing toilet. (We pulled her original toilet from the dumpster and measured it to find less than 1” difference between the new and old toilets.) We supplied American Standard’s shortest toilet. It is within one inch of any on the market. Shower Niche The homeowner complained of us not responding when she requested a niche in the shower for shampoos, bottles, etc. The customer approached the tile guy on the day before he was to tile the area in question, asking him for a price on the niche. She called our Project Manager and he did not respond. We instructed the tile guy not to do the niche, as we do not do them. They are potential leak areas. Based on the customer’s argumentative nature about any pricing, we thought it safer not to quote it anyway. There can be no quote on a job we will not perform. We should have, however, spoken to her before we completed the tile work in the shower area about this to be clear with our intentions. Spackle We had to move a light because it was ½” off center to the sink faucet. Our man spackled the area, and was not finished. Her husband decided to paint that weekend and instead of asking us to come back, he spackled the hole himself and they wound up complaining on the report instead of us asking to come back and respackle. In our contract, we clearly state “Workmanship is guaranteed for as long as you’re in the home.” We had not finished the job yet. We never leave a job until it is completely finished and cleaned up. We take pride in our completion process, which includes a walk-through with our project manager, thus ensuring all punch-list items are identified and a plan is developed to address these. It should be noted that this report on Angie’s List was filed prior to the finish of the job. Our job was completed on time and without delays. We accommodated the homeowner’s needs to be home on a specific day to layout the floor, one piece at a time, according to her directions, which caused challenges to our schedule. Our project manager, designer and I were available to her at any time. We do not understand her complaints referencing our lack of communication. An example of a misunderstanding includes a complaint we received when our office manager called the homeowners to pick up their tile at a local tile store. The husband called and was very upset because he thought JMC was going to pick up the tile. It clearly states in our contract that owner supplied materials must be at the site upon the job start. We told them they would save money by picking the tiles up themselves, to which the wife agreed. At this point, the job has been completed. They have passed all inspections and we have not yet been paid in full.

I liked pretty much everything about the company. They were prompt and clean. They showed up when they said they were going to show up. They called when they were late. Honestly he’s really the best contractor that I have ever dealt with. When there were mistakes made, they fixed them. Everything was good about them. I would use their services again in the future.
Description of Work: I used JMC Development. I last used their services may be in February. They remodeled our bathroom and I had various finishing work done by them around the house.
The pricing was reasonable and competitive. I was very pleased with them. There was good communication between the owner and us.
Description of Work: They remodeled a bathroom. They put in a new front porch for us. Years ago, they replaced windows.

In one word EXCELLANT – surpassing our expectations! Just a note to thank-you and the entire crew that worked on our addition/kitchen renovation. We are very pleased with the design, the quality of workmanship and the end result. At the initial interview, John, we appreciated the respect you gave us as potential clients. We also appreciated the final presentation of the estimate. It showed us exactly where our dollars were going to be spent. We know you put a great deal of thought and many hours into writing up that estimate. Tammy Apolonia an did an outstanding job. All our wants, thoughts and wishes we expressed at that initial interview were weaved into the design. Tammy was extremely helpful in understanding our desires, researching and coming up with innovative ways to make our dreams a reality. Manuel, Caesar, and Frank are all very conscientious and hard workers. Debbie always called and informed us of any revisions in the work schedule. We cannot give enough praise and thanks to George.. He is very skilled, hard-working, meticulous carpenter. When it comes to floor tile and backsplash, Richard is a true artist. He is painstakingly careful and meticulous. He did a fantastic job. We love the look and final result. We noticed that many of your employees were skilled not only in their area of expertise but other areas of construction. Your workers were very observant and if something needed attention, a member of your crew addressed it without hesitation. We are constantly telling people “We love the addition”, “We would not change or add a thing”. This was a well thought out plan, a superior design, and a skilled contractor that pulled everything together. We are not done yet. We will contact you when we plan our bathroom renovation. Many thanks to all who worked on this project,
Description of Work: Our home which we purchased new in 1969 had a small kitchen. For some reason now that the 4 kids were married and out of the house we both felt it was time for a new larger kitchen. We expanded the kitchen with a 21 foot by 11 foot addition. That included a full basement. (so I got a great new workshop room and she got an expanded kitched with a pantry). John, the owner, took about 10 days to give us a price after out first meeting. However he listened to us and took about 25 pictures of our existing house and basement at our first meeting. We interviewed 3 other contractors that gave us a price "on the spot" His proposal was VERY complete and professional. His detail proposal, told me he wasn't just throwing out a estimate price per square foot, but listened to what we wanted. The kitchen is beautiful !!

Everything has been great and has been really phenomenal with everybody. I would recommend them. They are consummate professionals.
Description of Work: I am currently using JMC Development.
I can't say enough good thing about them. They are perfectionists. They use good quality materials. This is not a criticism I just want people to know they work slowly, maybe that's because I told them time is not of the essence. For somebody else who that becomes a major issue, they work faster. Their work is so good. When the supervisor looked at the paint on the wall as compared to the trim on the molding, he noticed that the trim on the molding the paint had inched up on to it and he required it to be done over. They pay attention to detail. They have a number of ladies working for them who are good at designing. Peoples jaws drop open when they see my kitchen. I didn't want to loose the old detail in the house and they incorporated the old detail into the design of the new portion. I have absolutely no complaints with them. They have really nice people working for them but in addition to that they have are incredibly competent. They will stick with the project till it is done right. They really did a great job. The came very very close to matching the new floors with the existing. It's good quality work and you can trust their word.
Description of Work: They remodeled my kitchen and eating area. They opened up a back room to make it an eating area. They had to take down bearing walls, put in headers, create an arch from one room to the other, put in a new floor, conserved the old floor, put in new cabinets, put in new counter tops, put in a new window, put in a back splash, matched the molding, put in a back door, made a closet with French doors, and installed all the new appliances.

The quality of work done was excellent, the craftsman was always on time (calling every day before coming to our job), his work was meticulous and beautiful. The painters who completed the job also were outstanding. Anytime we need work done in our home, JMC will be the contractor of choice.
Description of Work: Over the past few years, JMC has done several renovation jobs for us. Most recently, they worked on our front door area, including repairing and replacing brickwork, and replacing all of the millwork and railings on our door frame, porch area, and balcony over the door.

I found John and his crew easy to deal with and responsive to our needs.
Description of Work: Major renovation and addition
JMC called us throughout the process and really made everything easy for us. They knew that we were first-time homebuyers and they walked us through the permit process and everything. Any small issue or choice, they called us both right away. John, the owner, called us frequently to ask how satisfied we were. We couldn't thank him enough for a job well done. This project took 3 weeks once we decided what we wanted. They gutted the bathroom in one day and continued to get the flooring out for another day or so. That crew was one group that came in. They put plastic everywhere and did not leave a hint of a mess anywhere. They did require space in our garage for the new items that came in so they could store tools and materials. (Not a problem for us at all.) Then there was another gentleman who came and put the new pipes and wood in. We had inspections and then the new work began. The electrician and plumber worked in tandem to get all of that done efficiently. From then on we had the same worker for the floors, tiling and cabinets. Every worker called us in the morning to explain what was going on that day and when they would be arriving. Most days we left as they arrived ... if we missed them there was a lock box on our door and we even left them a garage clicker to use. When I arrived home at night, they always greeted me and told me what progress was done during the day. By the time work was done we added on the paint option to have a painter to come in. She came in and painted all in one day and explained to me what to clean the walls with etc. I couldn't have been happier with the final product and the efficiency it took to complete. Our house was only unsettled for a mere 3 weeks. Also the payment structure is very fair and I found it to be easy enough for us ... a family on a budget. We are thinking of doing our kitchen in a few years and they will be our first call for a bid ... I have no doubt they will come in with the lowest bid and will get our business. They are that good! BRAVO JMC! You've made this hard-to-please homeowner extremely satisfied soup to nuts!
Description of Work: We just recently moved into a fixer upper and the upstairs bathroom was a nightmare. We dealt with a small space, crumbling tile, bad plumbing, etc. JMC came in an estimated a very reasonable cost for remodeling and completely gutting the bathroom and providing a top quality beautiful bathroom. We signed up for all of the generic things that they had and when we saw what their "standard" tile and bathroom fixtures were, well we were pleasantly surprised! We went with beautiful tiling, shower head, sink, toilet (all energy savers!) and we did upgrade to custom countertops with matching custom cabinets. The standard mirror has been a conversation piece as people have come to visit. So many think that we paid a ton for it and we've explained that it was STANDARD! Ok so enough about my beautiful bathroom and how happy we are with the final product ...

JMC provided a detailed workplan and estimate before work commenced. Team onsite followed the workplan and completed the work as specified. Workers took photos so we could review with GC at his office later. Office is organized. Took some time to get a date scheduled for the work, but once the work commenced the workers were onsite till completion. Jobsite maintained well and all materials and debris were removed after work was complete.
Description of Work: We purchased a new (old) house. JMC helped us correctly assess unexpected water infiltration, chimney, and roof issues. So far JMC has performed demolition, and also repaired roof and chimneys, including re-capping three chimneys and fixing flashing leaks. They also did a retile of a bathroom and added tile to an entryway. Saved us a lot of money vs. estimates provided during home inspection, and corrected the issues with the house. Good tile work.
