First let me say that everyone I dealt with was very nice. From the initial visit to the day of work everyone was polite and friendly which is great. The work was quality work. I don't have any complaints about that. My disappointment comes in the fact that I was sent an electronic estimate and when they came to do the work the price was higher than what was on the estimate. Apparently when they sent me the estimate they combined 2 services under one price. I had intended on getting the stucco work done, having the chimney cleaned and having the stove removed. On the invoice it was listed as $575 + Tax. I sent a follow-up email just to confirm afterwards and the price given to me in that was $615.25. Still close to the original so I didn't think much of it. When they arrived I was told that it would be over $900 because they made a mistake. Normally I would've said forget it but I needed the work done but had to just get the stucco work and stove moved because I hadn't budgeted for the additional costs and even at that what I paid for the stucco and removal was still over $150 more than what the last confirmed price was. Nick and John were polite about the mistake but what really is the turn off is that no one ever called me to tell me the mistake on the estimate or email until they arrived. That's just very disappointing and just poor. If I send someone a written estimate I would hold to it aside for unforeseen issues found at the job site. If I miscalculated I would just take the hit for it and do the work for the price on the estimate. I didn't raise a stink and paid for the services I could afford but I think I'll use another service when I have the fireplace completely redone next year.

The techs were prompt and professional. They explained all of the issues with the current liner and installation. They went above and beyond to be sure that the new liner met local code and was installed correctly which a previous (low rated) chimmney company did not do properly about 5 years previously. This is critical since neither the homeowner nor the Town inspector can see behind the wall to ensure proper connections. I think their prices and expertise are the best I have experienced in chimmney repairs

The representative on the phone seemed to know nothing about chimney inspection whatsoever. I left my name and number with him, and received a call at 10:30 AM the next day from someone who knew more about the business. However, he wouldn't schedule me for an exact time, instead insisting on a three hour arrival window. Now, I know that's typical for a cable installer or something of that kind, but when I explained that my realtor had to be there for the inspection (since I don't own the home), the best the guy would do is promise to call me an hour before he showed up. I don't know about anyone else, but I don't think my realtor would appreciate being told that he had to leave a 3 hour block of time open in his day to sit around at a house twiddling his thumbs, followed by a 1:30 hr inspection, because the inspector couldn't be bothered to tell me what time he would leave his office in the morning! (He told me I'd be the first inspection of the day, but couldn't tell me when that would be.)

We started noticing some fallen stones around the house sometime after superstorm Sandy hit. Finally, we found that the stones came from our chimney - the stones were loosened by Sandy and started falling off gradually. We started to look for contractors to do the repairs and could find very few who would respond. There was only one company responding before we used Angie's List and that company was related to a company whom we contacted for a proposal on the roof. As we were not using that company for the roof work, we were hesitant in using the chimney company as it is located up north. I happened to see an ad on Angie's List on TV and decided to give it a try. I called and learned that they do have a fair number of chimney repair contractors on their list which would serve my township. We chose 5 highly rated ones. In the end, we only had 2 giving us a proposal. The others did not, for various reasons. Why did we choose Flu Tech? All 3 proposals were not too far apart in terms of doing the repairs PLUS replacing inner tubes of the chimney. The first one in North Jersey also had a quote on just doing the repairs. The second one (from Angie's List) did not have that quote as they said the inner tube needed to be replaced. For Flu Tech, their initial quote was just for the repair work. We asked about the replacement of the inner tube and got an additional quote on that. Here is what Jay (one of the brothers who own the company) said which made us decide on picking them: - they would match any other quote that we might have got - they have similar smaller stones at their shop, which if our chimney was only missing a few smaller pieces, they would provide to us free of charge to complete the work - they would assess the inner tube condition in detail when they do the repairs and would only replace it if they think it is necessary and just doing minor repair work is not going to help - we asked about doing some repointing re the stones of our fireplace; Jay said doing that would make the fireplace look bad as the new cement color would show up to much against the old. We were in contact with the second brother, Matt, on the contract and he was always very prompt in his response time/returning our calls. The chimney is now repaired very nicely. They had done some repairs to the inner tube too without additional charge and told us that that would be good enough without our having to replace the tube ( which would cost about $1600+ extra). It is always nice to know that there is a company which is not trying to get more work out of you, even if it may not be necessary work. We are totally satisfied with the work of Flu Tech and their work ethics and would not hesitate in recommending them to anyone else requiring chimney work. On Angie's List, we got a discount on one of the rain caps installed as there is a coupon on that on the website. That already paid for part of my 5 year subscription!

We would like to thank you for this lovely review. We are so pleased we were able to assist with repairing your chimney/fireplace and were able to save you some money at the same time. Hurricane Sandy was a very unfortunate, devastating storm that affected much of our service area. We were blessed to have not suffered much damage personally but take great pride in being able to provide whatever assistance we can in our community for rebuilding.

They offered to come out, but they had a bunch of extra charges if they were to come out. But the day they were supposed to come out, I waited for 2 hours for them to get here. And when I called them, they said my appointment was for the next week. Which was not the plan.

We do appreciate the review and would like to apologize if there was a miscommunication on our part in reference to the appointment time. We would like to address the fee associated with the Big Deal however, it did state in the ad that there would be an $80 fee for any of the NYC 5 boroughs which was the only associated fee required. We do feel that an "F" rating was unfair as we were never given a opportunity to demonstrate the the high level of customer service and workmanship that we offer.

I had been previously told that I should have my flue relined. I got 3 estimates and Flue Tech was the cheapest but also seemed the most professional. They originally gave me an estimate that included sales tax. I had to remind them that I didn't pay tax on this type of service. The rest of the job went well and I found the technicians to be exceedingly polite and clean.
Description of Work: My chimney flue needed replacement. The company informed me that I didn't have a lining, just the original brick - my brownstone is over 100 yrs old. They were completely professional from giving me an estimate to doing the work. They came on time - calling to tell me when they would arrive. They ran into a problem and had to return a 2nd time with the corrected size of the lining. This was done to prevent having to cut through the wall, so I appreciated the they did not leave me with a mess. The technicians were polite, quiet and clean. They finished the job the 2nd time and left my the cellar with no debris, everything was vacuumed up.

Took a bit of time to schedule but when an earlier opening became available, the company contacted me proactively to accelerate the service date. The chimney was cleaned efficiently after they arrived at the scheduled time. They gave me an unsolicited assessment/estimate for chimney repair as well. While they were $25 cheaper than others who quoted the job ($125 instead of $150), I subsequently found service providers at $100 in my area (quality of service unknown). I will probably use this service again since they were very professional and it would be worth the extra $25 to mitigate hassles/risks of lower quality service providers.

We started with a Big Deal chimney cleaning for $125. You can't tell how good a job is done on a cleaning, but they were prompt and punctual and seemed competent. On that basis we had them install a custom chimney cap since our old caps on individual flues had been blown off by Sandy. At $525, it wasn't the cheapest estimate but covers 4 flues, has a lifetime guarantee, and was done well (at least it looks good and hasn't blown off in the last 4 months). Finally, the technician said we needed to install HeatShield cement in the smoke chamber (in between the fireplace and the main chimney) because of breaks and possible leaks. At this point we may have entered the realm of chimney sweep games (how would we know?), but since the house was built in 1897 and hasn't had any major chimney work done in many decades and probably ever, and since this is a potential safety issue (as the technician told it), I played along for $700. In all they were at the house three different times for these three different jobs, and they were always punctual and professional. That's really all I can say for sure, but since they seemed competent, I am giving them the top rating.

They were prompt in seeting up appointments and meeting their scheduled time. They always confirm the day before the appointment and the day of. Overall, we were very pleased.
Description of Work: We had a gas fireplace installed in our master bedroom by a contractor that we eventually fired. We did not know how the fireplace worked, so we first hired a company to inspect the fireplace and turn it on for us. The company came and told us that the fireplace needed a new vent, since the original vent was the wrong size, hence the fireplace will not work. They told us that we need to open the fireplace to replace the vent. Well, this is easier said than done. We searched Angie's list for a second opinion. We found Flue Tech. From the beginning, they were professional, calling us to confirm appointment, then calling us when they were on their way. Jay, the technician arrived on time and immediately, confirmed the bad news. The vent needed replacement, in additional to a few other fire hazzards that needed correction. Instead of recommending that we open the fireplace, he recommended going to the attic and crawling down to the fireplace vent. We placed the order for the parts; he returned with the parts; and fixed the fireplace!!! NO opening of the fireplace!!!! They did a great job.

After having several firms come out to try and solve a leak at the roof/chimney and provide all manner of suggestion for repair, including a complete tear down of the chimney and replacing liners, Flue Tech came out and identified the problem as needing repointing and repairing the crown and flashing. FlueTech had a minor problem with scheduling, but the job was still completed within a 2 day window. The crew came out and repointed and fixed the crown as well as installed a new chimney cap. I've held back on writing a review to see whether the problem leaks have been resolved, and it appears that it has done so. There have been no water infiltrations anywhere near the chimney and the crown now is properly pitched. If the situation changes, I will be relying on their warranty and professionalism to make sure that the issues are resolved in a timely manner.

They were prompt and neat. I have no way of evaluating their results, however, The subsequent smells from the flue they left open gave me cause to wonder. I was made uneasy by an end-of--service pitch that I needed to reline the chimney, for only $2,113. I was surprised both that they came up with that evaluation in a 1960's house and that the technician doing the vacuuming was able to quote on behalf of the company. Perhaps he was a young owner? Anyway, I am soliciting competitive bids to see where his quote stands. Then there's always the question as to whether we really need the relining, anyway.
Description of Work: This began with a strong odor of smoke being left over from ten days of fires in the aftermath of Sandy. We had the carpet and upholstery cleaned and were told we should get the chimney cleaned, as well. Chose "A" rated company from Angies' List. They arrived, laid out drop cloths. One went to the top of the chimney, the other inserted the brush and vacuum from the fire chamber and proceeded to do the job. They were done in less than an hour. Cleanup was good. Periodically, thereafter, we continued to get the smell of burnt wood. I closed the flue and that seems to have taken care of the problem, but it left me with the question as to how well they did the cleaning job.

They did a good, thorough job and did what was expected. The initial estimate was less than what it turned out to be. I think they were trying to up sell, which I did not appreciate at all, but they did a do a good job overall. While dealing with them, I would advice others to be very specific in what work one wants and to stick to that because with them, it is pretty easy to go off budget.

Mike and Steve were great! They arrived on time, prepped the area, completed the chimney sweep of our family room fireplace, and cleaned up after themselves. At our request, they also provided us with quotes to install a new fireplace door, replace refractory panels and clean the chimney of our other fireplace. They were very professional, friendly and clearly experts at their job. I would highly recommend them . . . the savings by using the coupon on Angie's List is icing on the cake.
