They need to be more transparent in their contracts. They lost us as a customer.
Description of Work: We used Ken's Tree Service for several years. Biannually, we have our trees inspected and work done. Two years ago we were very satisfied with the work that Ken and his team performed. Last year, out of the blue, we receive a large bill for a service we did not request on our off year. When I called the office, thinking this was an error, I was told that I signed an agreement that this particular service, spraying, was an annual contract and I owed the money. No one ever mentioned that spraying was an ongoing commitment. The office staff would not budge.

Went very smoothly. Very efficient. Wasted no time had all the necessary equipment including a crane, large grinder, small grinder, and log loader. Electric wires involved and they knew exactly how to handle the situation. Brought necessary rubber mats to protect property and paver driveway.
Description of Work: Removed 4 trees on my property: one was an 85-100 ft Norway pine and the three other trees were smaller: ground stumps of all trees and cleaned up area completely. Office provided advanced notice of when work would be done and confirmed the date the afternoon prior to coming. All work was done as requested.

Overall things went very well. Ken gave us a walk-through before-hand to identify problems with our trees, making suggestions as to what should be taken care of immediately and what could wait. His crew was punctual and did a great job. Overall, we were very happy with what they did.
Description of Work: Extensive tree work in our backyard. Limbs were pruned, ivy removed, and stumps ground.

I was so frustrated with my experience with Ken's tree care, that I almost didn't write this review, as I didn't want to relive it all. But after mentioning my experience to friends and family, I realized I had to - I wouldn't want anyone else to go through what I went through which was in a word: FAIL. I had gotten an estimate from another company and actually contacted them first to schedule, as they called when they came to a**** and got back to me right away - but I would have to wait over a month to be scheduled, so I chose Ken's - as they were able to do it within 2 weeks or so. Fail #1. I explained when I called for an estimate - that I had a particular situation and would like to be present so I could explain precisely what I needed. Plus, the property is an odd set up - as I live in a block of townhouses that share our back property with a fire road that goes through. Confusing right? Exactly why I wanted to be present for the estimate. Over a week later, I never heard back from them, so I called to ask when they would be coming - to which they replied: A. They did come and do my estimate (And didn't call me, BTW) and B. They had misplaced it - and and quot;oh here it is on the desk, and quot; Fail #2. After scheduling the appointment - and stressing that I need to be called prior to coming, if possible, (so that I could move my cars - as that would be necessary in order to do the work I imagine, as the branch that needs to be cut overhangs right over my vehicles), I waited for my original appointment date - which was 10/3. 9am that morning, it was raining/wet out. So I called Ken's to reconfirm if the appointment would be happening, to which they replied -actually they had already been there earlier in the morning, but they didn't have the right equipment to cut it and it was too wet anyway, so they'd wait for a better day i the indefinite future. I even asked them that verbatim: and quot;it is scheduled for some indefinite time in the future - and you will call me to let me know when you will be back?and quot; = and quot;woman on phone - and quot;YES.and quot; Fine. Even this didn't get me upset - the fact that: A. If they came here for an estimate, wouldn't they have assessed what type of machine they needed to do the job ahead of time? B. they didn't call me when they came (so that I would have moved my cars, which would have been necessary), as I had asked them to do - twice now. Fail #3. The indefinite Future was apparently 2 days later on Friday 10/5 and they felt AGAIN it was ok to just show up and not call me to let me know. As LUCK would have it, I HAPPENED To be home that day at precisely the moment when I walked out to my car, I saw some Ken's workers walking around my back fire road. I was surprised to see them there, in midst of what looked like they were trying to move a machine into place to do work -so i stopped one of the workers and asked if I should move my car first. He pointed to my neighbor (3 houses down)'s tree and said, you don't have to move your car. I was confused and said my cars were DOWN there (pointing) and he said, but this is the tree (pointing to neighbor's tree) we're cutting. WHAT?!?!?!?! They were scheduled to CUT THE WRONG FREAKING TREE - my poor NEIGHBOR'S TREE, which wasn't even right next to my house, but THREE HOUSES OFF!) If I had not walked out of my house EXACTLY when I did, they would have chopped my neighbor's tree down. Which makes no sense since I asked for a branch cutting ANYWAY (for a much larger tree) and they were prepared to CUT down an ENTIRE (wrong) tree. We had some hectic words, a call to the original estimate person, and tried to sort this out. At this point, I was so frustrated I would have just told them to go home, but I just want this tree branch cut I moved on. Fail #4. So after telling them which branch to cut, they workers looked at me and said: it's too much work to do today. ARE YOU KIDDING ME? Plus, as they didn't seem like experts - just workers, when I asked if where I wanted it cut would be structurally stable for the rest of the tree, or if it were a good point to cut - they weren't sure, just said okay okay to everything, which made no sense to me and made me nervous. There is a day care center where the other part of the tree's branches hang and should cutting my piece off make it weaker for other part, those poor kids could get hurt. At least, I didn't know for sure, but isn't that the point of an expert supposed to check when making an estimate? Which, would have been an estimate for the RIGHT tree to begin with had they just CALLED ME as I REQUESTED them to - as I KNEW this was a tricky situation! So, even after all this, I didn't manage to get the work done. I called the office after the workers left, and I cancelled the job and told them why. It is APPALLING to me that, AT EVERY POINT OF MY EXPERIENCE WITH THEM, they failed. From not calling when coming to make the estimate, as per my request. Then losing my estimate and unable to follow up with me until I HAD TO call them back. Then failing to call the day of the original schedule date, as per my request again. And of course the biggest faux pas - ALMOST CUTTING THE WRONG TREE DOWN. (and still didn't call me that time too.) I tolerate a bit of disorganization from small / local businesses, because I want to support them. I am a small business owner myself, so I try to be patient and give people a chance to do their thing. But this was shamefully poor. You could forgive one mistake - a bad day here and there happens to businesses. And even with just 1 mistake, you can lose customer. But my experience was just AWFUL through and through.
Description of Work: There was a precarious overhang of a big branch that hovers over my back property (where we park our cars, actually). The tree was not on my property line, it was behind a fence of an apartment complex, but my town allows me to cut what grows over my space. I asked Ken's for an estimate and to schedule the partial tree cutting.

Ken provided an estimate to perform some tree work around my property. I had to remove several trees and prune several of them. He was prompt in coming to the house to provide an estimate and provided a detailed estimate of the cost via e-mail and postal mail. They send a very professional brochure with a copy of their insurance policy. My tree service was rescheduled once to accommodate their work schedule but due to the bad storm at the end of October, they had to reschedule again but failed to contact me. I took a day off when the service was to be rendered and waited for them but they never showed so when I called their office, they told me they were busy doing storm work and apologized. I could understand they had other urgent matters to be taken care of but failed to inform me until I called their office on the day of the appointment. In fact, I left a message with their answering service 2 days before the scheduled service date but never heard back from them, therefore, I had falsely assumed they would show up to do the tree work. I insisted they provide me an quick update and they told me they would get back to me the week after but I waited another 2 weeks for them to call me back. They told me they can schedule me in few weeks but by this time, I had already had another company taking care of the tree service. Based on my experience with this company, they do a great job in providing an estimate but don't follow through on executing and communicating to their customers. Perhaps this was an exception but based on my experience, I've taken my business elsewhere.
Description of Work: Ken's office provided an estimate to cut and prune trees around my house but the service was never performed due to scheduling issues. See below for more detail.
