The Neighborhood Handyman

My husband and I are definitely "un-handy" and these small jobs had been lingering for months. Rose returned my call promptly, and we were able to schedule the estimate for a Saturday - very important to me since I work full time and need to minimize my time out of the office. Steve and Rose were great about scheduling a firm time for the work so I could arrange to be home. They were both also very pleasant to deal with. Steve was exactly on time, and completed the work professionally and quickly. I will be calling them again.

We renovated our master bathroom last year (hired a different contractor), and since then have had ongoing issues with the shower leaking into our basement. Before hiring The Neighborhood Handyman, we have paid for 2 other contractors on multiple occasions to fix the problem, but no one ever truly fixed it. The repair involved ripping up our tiled shower floor and part of the tiled bathroom floor. Steve and John made it completely waterproof, took their time to make sure it was done well and correctly, and kept us informed at every step. The finished product is finally fixed and the tiling/grouting looks even better than when it was first installed (even better than a local tile company). They also cut out portions of our basement ceiling where the leak had caused damage, replaced the drywall and repainted the entire ceiling. Among the major repair of the master bathroom, they fixed a few other odds and ends in the house that we just didn't have time to get to. All were done with the same care as the master bathroom. My biggest recommendation is for their punctuality. They told us every evening what time they would be back the following day, and if they were running late (which only happened maybe once in 2 weeks of work at our house), we got a text message or phone call. Also, they cleaned up after themselves before leaving. Having suffered through other handymen with little to no success, Steve and his team are the utmost professional and genuinely nice people. I would recommend them to anyone in need of repair work and will not call anyone else but them in the future. Steve, Rose and John are true professionals and amongst fixing everything, they were personable and trustworthy. They may not be the cheapest but by no means are they over the top expensive. Paying them to fix it first would have saved us a lot of money and time.

I have refrained from writing this review mostly because I really like Steve and Rose as people. I have however opted to write this review as I am rather miffed at the amount of money I paid for not the best work product. I contacted TNH to complete a few jobs around our new home. I wanted some boards on our deck replaced, the entire deck re-stained, our outdoor grill area to be fixed and resurfaced with tile and my house power washed. When I originally got the estimate, I was given a quote for less than $3k to have these items done. Now in the course of them working here, I did add on some items (installing a dog door, installing a garbage disposal, fixing a board on my gate and installing washer/dryer hook ups in my garage). The scope of the BBQ project also changed when we discovered that the grill could not be salvaged. This changed the BBQ project to demo the existing structure (which was not that big) and to keep the existing gas and electric on the deck. of course I did expect to pay more with the addition of projects, but I certainly did not know what I was in for! One of my biggest complaints is the time it took to complete these projects. We started in July and wrapped up in September/October. During this time there was a huge mess in my back yard- debris, dust, materials and tools scattered. Pretty much we did not use our back yard for the summer because it was an uncomfortable mess. Most of the time we had Steve's apprentice working solo. I give this poor lad credit for doing the best he could with little direction. Steve did install the garbage disposal and dog door. I am still having issues with his installation of the garbage disposal. When he installed it he had to pull out the dishwasher- while doing so he had to remove the cover plate at the bottom of the dishwasher. Every time we open the dishwasher the plate catches on the door and gets stuck. I mentioned this to the apprentice worker one day, and he did come in and fix it for me. Unfortunately it has since reverted back to sticking, and bending the plate. :( The power washing of the house was a C-. While the apprentice did do a good job on the bottom portion of the house, the upper floor remains dirty! The deck-this was my biggest nightmare! What I thought would take a week or two to complete ended up being dragged out for months. I had to contact Rose on several occasions to tell her that there were many spots on the deck which were incomplete. She did send the worker back out on several occasions to fix. At one point I had had enough and just said things were fine so that it could be at long last wrapped up and I could have my space back. This was my mistake! I look at the deck now and could just cry! This is why I have chose to write my review now! I can not place ANYTHING on the deck or else the paint peels and chips off! The whole thing pretty much needs to be done over again! This just infuriates me! Another complaint that I have is with the final billing. When I received the bill I could not believe my eyes! My project went from under $3k to nearly $9k! I immediately called them to dispute the numbers. I was told that I did add a lot of things on, which I understand, and I do expect to pay a reasonable price for services rendered. When we went item by item, I noticed a huge price increase on the work done to my deck. There was an additional fee added on for the power washing (which according to my first quote was inclusive). The amount of wood needed was more than we originally anticipated, but not the to amounts included in the final billing. I talked this over with Steve, and he in the end told me that I should pay him what ever I wanted. I very much want to pay what is fair and right. In the end I paid him $6275. I feel that this more than fair for the work done. In the end I have learned my lesson! I will NEVER hire anyone again without an estimate given in writing, I will never again hire anyone without guaranteeing their work, I will never again hire anyone who can not give me a scheduled timeframe for completion of work and stick to that timeframe.

Steve arrived on Monday and was able to get all the work completed in a couple of hours. The job was done clean and neat. The faucet needed additional holes to install. That was done without a hitch. My husband and I were very pleased. I really enjoyed speaking to Rose to set up the appointment. She was like a friend.

I purchased new lowers for my kitchen thinking they would be a breeze to install. That was not the case. I quickly realized this was above my knowledge level and needed expert help. I quickly looked through AL for the nearest handyman. Although they were not the first I called, they were the first to call me back. I explained my situation and was told they'd have someone out the next day. Everyone arrived on time and were very polite and amicable. The owner is funny an a straight shooter with none of the B.S. They finished remarkably fast and so I asked if they could also install a new front door. He agreed and had another employee swing bye and install it. All in all, my experience was excellent and will use them again.

The completed job was done very professionally. They made sure that things were cleaned up everyday. The worked was also completed in an acceptable amount of time. Workers were courteous and pleasant. I would recommend "The Neighborhood Handyman".

Contacted the provider and received a quick response back. Rose was a pleasure to deal with. We looked at other other providers and are happy we chose The Neighborhood Handyman. They were here when they said they would be and called if there was an issue. They were concerned that we were happy with the service that they provided. If we weren't happy with something they worked with us to get it resolved. We are planning to have some more work done at the house and they will be the first we call.

I have used or tried to use many different Handymen services and I have found many of them use less, unless your spending large $ or have big projects. Some don't call you back, some don't show up, they are just unreliable. Well that has changed. The Neighborhood Handyman was a fantastic group of very responsive, reasonably priced and considerate home repair services. This was by far the best experience we have had and I will use them again. I can be difficult and demanding and they were nothing but professional, and very focused on customer service. Even so much as to call numerous times to check on the quality of work, level of service and overall satisfaction. I even had an emergency unrelated to the work they were doing, right before the holiday and they gave me someone after hours to help me out! Steve, his wife and Dave did a great job. Thank you so much they really helped us out and repaired a lot of things that I just couldn't get too. And they put up my 135 inch projector screen in time for the Cowboys game! Steve and Rose we very professional and truly interested in making sure we were 100% happy with the service provided. I also was very pleased with one of Steve's employee's, Terry, who was very polite, professional, neat and a pleasure to have in my home while he worked. The work looks great, and we are very pleased with the finished product!!!

They didn't work that quick so that was all they were able to do on that particular day. They were not able to do the storm doors that I have contracted with them to install. I guess the owner's wife got in contact with me in the middle of the week and she scheduled it for today but there were no shows. They weren't particularly clean; other stuffs that goes with hanging a door like trim work and cocking...it was acceptable but not a very good job. However, the door works fine. They were fine, that's why I chose them because they seem to be nice guys and they seem to want the work.

Very smooth transaction. Work was done on time and efficiently. Cleanup was excellent. Will absolutely use again for any work I need done. 100 percent satisfied!

We found out my elderly and disabled dad was going to be released from a rehabilitation facility, with very little notice. We learned that he would need important changes made to his home in order to live there again. Steve and Rose answered my desperate phone call while they were on vacation! They squeezed my project into their schedule with very little notice. They accomplished the remodeling we needed before Dad came home! All this happened in like a week. During the work, Steve was in communication with us, and helped us make decisions about the project. The project included carpentry, plumbing, tiling, etc. The quality of the work is excellent, as we knew it would be from a past project with Steve a few years ago. I cannot say enough about how helpful it is to have this kind of caring and support when you are in a time of need. There are so many details to take care of when bringing a disabled person back into the home - health care services to implement, etc. Knowing that we had Steve and Rose involved made the whole this so much easier. Thank you Steve and Rose!

Handyman was polite, explained what he was doing and why. Gave me tips on caring for some things. Work was quality; put down a cloth to keep floors clean while he worked. Put in the light sensor, which was an extra--a bit expensive at $50 labor for that job. Willing to return to adjust the sensor after I called to say I had problems re-positioning it.

I'll let you know in the future when he does the work we requested. Great so far.

We had several items addressed: garbage disposal, kitchen sink, electrical outlets, exterior fascia board replacement. In regards to the exterior work, what we thought was a minor job of replacement ending up being a larger project. Our house is over 200 years old and when you start "peeling back the onion", you never know what you will find. This is primarily the reason why we picked Steve. His knowledge of older homes and how to deal with situation as such gives me a comfortable level to know that's it going to be done correctly. We ended up have extensive work done to the roof line, window walls and interior window walls due to structural issues that were discovered once the fascia boards were removed. Once again I compliment Steve and his staff on handling the situation, making us comfortable on what it was going to take to make it right. In the end, it looks great!

Seems like a really good guy and company with great reviews! Looking forward to using his company!

Owners Rose and Steve were courteous and professional. Steve came out quickly to look over the job. Rose worked with me to schedule a convenient day to do the job. On the day of the job the repairman arrived on time. We talked over what he planned to do. When he finished he asked me to look over his work. And he cleaned up after he finished the job. I was very pleased with the work when it was completed.

I used The Neighborhood Handyman service for the first time this week and I am very pleased with the service, professionalism and quality of work-all within my budget! Rose is really pleasant and very prompt at returning calls and keeping things on schedule and Steve is super neighborly and very experienced, efficient and delivers great results! My issue: I had moved into an older apartment with a fire place. My apartment living room (where the fire place is) faces a nature trail with large mature trees. I had been infested with stink bugs and other flying insects coming through the fire place (Terminix confirmed this). I needed a door or glass covering to seal off the fireplace opening that would be within my budget, look decent and be air tight to prevent the bugs from coming into my apartment through the fire place. I called Steve and Rose and found them to be terrific. Rose called me back the same day and scheduled my estimate with Steve. Solution: Steve sized up the issue and found a cost-effective solution-custom cut plexiglass. He installed the glass today and sealed it so it is air tight, covering the fireplace opening so it looks like a clean glass enclosure. I'm at ease now, no bugs to worry about making their way through that fireplace. I am very pleased with the results and the service. Rose and Steve are a great team and I will definitely use them again as needed. They are very pleasant, like really nice neighbors that know how to fix things in a very efficient professional way- that kept my budget in tact!

This is the first time I have tried Angie's List and therefore was understandably a bit skeptical about whether I would be able to find a handyman that is professional, honest, and fair with pricing. Thankfully, my first call was to Steve Crass at The Neighborhood Handyman! Initially I spoke with a woman named Rose on the phone, who was very pleasant to talk to. She made a note of the things I needed done and said she would call Steve and then call me right back to let me know if he could pass by. Sure enough, I received a call back in less than 5 minutes and was pleasantly surprised that Steve was able to come to my home in 30 minutes (just after a holiday weekend)! He is very down to earth, good natured, and has a sense of humor to boot. After showing Steve my sink, parts that were broken, etc, he told me it would be no problem to fix using the new parts I had purchased myself earlier from Home Depot. About 25 minutes later everything was done and working properly. His hourly fee is more than fair and he really has restored my trust in home repair professionals. I highly recommend him!

Excellent excellent service, professional and courteous. The guy who did the work performed it about as perfect as I could have hoped. He cleaned up after himself and was very polite and quick. Would definitely recommend and use again.
