Gikas Painting, Roofing and Restoration

The team at Gika's was incredible. Hernane was our supervisor and he was terrific in his communication and service. He kept us informed, he was thoughtful and he took extra care and pride in the work his team was doing. Orlin and Jairo were terrific painters - meticulous and very clean - the end result is great!

They are artists when it comes to colors and craftsmanship and incredible service - the crew would begin at 7am and leave when the sun went down. Their price is higher than most in town but you get what you pay for. I used them 10 years ago or the same services and will only use them in the future. Amazing work!

It went perfectly. They repaired some woodwork before they applied the paint. They were very responsive to our needs and our wishes. The crews they sent were very professional and they paid attention to details. The supervisor visited our home very often to make sure that the work was done as best as possible. At the end, they also applied an additional coat to the deck at no cost, because they were not pleased with the two coats that they had applied. The proof of a good job is how good it looks and how long it lasts. Both are perfect!

George and his crew from Gikas were excellent and very easy to work with. Pricing is very fair. It was obvious that the prep work, which is so important, was done correctly and with care. George had some great suggestions to enhance the job that we ended up doing, such as additional ceiling moldings, which really made a big difference. The workers were all neat, polite and respectful. Hernane, the manager for our project, is outstanding in every way. He made our month long project progress smoothly with as little intrusion as was possible. I would not hesitate to recommend Gikas for any painting or home restoration job.

I guess I would give him a B, I wouldn't give him an A. I had some aggravation with him on it. It's hard to know. I like things done a certain way and things weren't. I had to keep going down there and checking and pointing out things. At some point he came. He wasn't there all the time, but eventually with me working on it a lot, it came out okay. It wasn't fabulous, but it was okay. I guess a "B". The price was in the ballpark of what other people wanted to charge.

I thought they were excellent. They did a very fine job. They had a very high quality job. They did what they said they were going to do when they said they were going to do. There was a couple of little extra things that came up in the context of the job. They took those things on and did them like there was a window that needed to be repaired and they fixed it. They did a great job. I was very pleased with their work. I would absolutely use them in the future.

it went well. However, the process took almost a month start to finish and the entire time (except for 3 days was sunny). Was told the job would only take a week.

The quality of the work was very good and the price was fair. Unfortunately, the number of hours for completing the work was less than the time I spent sending emails and leaving voice mails to find out when the work might actually be done. The estimate was given on April 10. The work was completed June 15. Between those dates I had to send 9 emails and leave 4 voicemails, (e.g. "Hello, its been a week since I've heard from you and I left a phone message as well. When will you be sending someone back to complete the work?". Brief reply: "Will arrange in a day or two." but that required yet another message from me 3 days later. I never received a single pro-active communication about scheduling; and only about half of my queries ever received a reply. On the whole, it was a frustrating experience.

Gikas is fine for painting, but look elsewhere for carpentry, which is apparently not their specialty. They made changes (removing original pillar caps) we didn't ask for that actually made our front porch look worse. When I asked the foreman why he removed originals, he just made things up ("they were rotting" or "to match the back") to justify. The carpentry in back was also sub-par (detailed work was a bit crude, and the pillar caps warped), In the end, they made things more or less right, but it was a struggle and really annoying. They also just quit responding to calls and emails for a while.

All appointments were kept on time and the work was outstanding. The job was finished on time and all aspects of color selection, workmanship etc. were extremely professional

George was punctual and efficient in providing recommendations and the estimate and follow up on the initial planning. The crew arrived on time and worked extremely hard and efficiently. Really the only downside of the experience was that after the estimate I never saw George again and Alex assisted but was scarce. I was left to work with the crew who predominantly spoke Spanish making communication and decisions as the job progressed difficult. In the end the crew did a very nice job, and were responsive along the way and I was very satisfied with the outcome.

Excellent. The entire job was very professional, from the moment George Gikas came to present a quote to the on-the-job supervision, to the people doing the work. I also want to add the the quote was extremely detailed. The cost box will not let me input the amount. I spent approximately $10,000.00

Not impressed at all ! It was a simple painting/stain job that we had done a number of times in the past with other companies and we had decided to give Gikas a try, since they were so highly rated. The process was painful from the point of getting a quote (took days, office not returning calls), scheduling (took many days), the paint crew not showing up on the agreed day, a 2-day job taking 9, which left us at a half-way point through the Labor day weekend.... Though the quote said "staining", the crew had applied deck paint - not a bad thing, but again, different from the expectations. I did not feel the crew was professional, as they left slabs of unpeeled paint and nails out and started painting... Not a good experience overall, we were glad we tried the company on a small job... The company does a lot of work in Montclair area: if our town was not convenient for their planning and performing a quality job, I wish it was made known to us right away. Will look for another provider next time around.

Our experience with Gikas has been fantastic. We live in a Dutch Colonial built in 1929 in Montclair. We are careful to maintain the integrity and character of our home, both inside and out. After speaking with several contractors to perform the services we desired (new roof, strip the paint, new paint, new gutters), we spoke with George at Gikas. From the get-go, he understand what we wanted and really demonstrated a knowledge of our home. We liked the idea of having a single contractor do the entire job. It was obvious that Gikas wasn't just completing a task but they were interested in transforming our home and paying attention to details, whether we asked about them or not. It really felt like they cared about every aspect. Once we contracted the job, Kristina did a fantastic job of always being present and making sure that things were being done to meet and exceed our expectations. She was instrumental in choosing colors with my wife and we've had rave reviews from our neighbors on our color selection. Along the way, even when we changed our minds on things, Kristina was accommodating and prompt. The communication with the whole team is fantastic. They are very responsive via text and if timing changes for whatever reason, they are great about letting you know. The painters were fantastic. They were extremely friendly, courteous and respectful of our space and were careful to keep our property clean and free of debris. Again, Kristina was very present to make sure that this was always the case. The roofers had to remove three layers of roofing (original cedar and two asphalt), apply plywood and then resurface the roof. This was all done quickly and the end result looks fantastic. The gutters were all cut to spec on site and look great. They even rerouted some of the gutter paths to really make the back side of our house much more aesthetically appealing. At the end of the day, we are thrilled with the work Gikas did. More than anything, we loved the personal attention and the caring that Kristina and her whole team showed. When you do a job that complete restores and transforms the exterior of your home, there's a feeling that you only get one shot at it. Gikas made us feel that they understood us all along the way. In the rare instance when we changed our minds, Gikas took care of it without raising our price (we changed the colors of our garage doors after they had already been painted, they replaced rotting wood without additional charge, etc). Instances like these demonstrated to us that they were interested in making us happy and providing a job they (and us) would be proud of. We will definitely use them again.

Gikas came recommended to us for painting exteriors and I initially called to get a sense, as a new homeowner, as to when and how much repainting our wood shingle siding would be. The owner was responsive and took time to quote different projects upon our first meeting (turns out his company did the painting and some skimcoating on the interior of our house before we bought it, which, as an aside, we are very happy with overall). Because he had previously worked on the house, George, the owner, emphasized during our first discussion how much a section of our roof needed repair. It turns out our insurance agreed as, just when work was started on our roof, we received a letter in the mail explaining that the same section was an issue and needed to be replaced (I am leaving a review of our home inspector next!). George told us we had at least five years until we needed to repaint the exterior and he provided quotes for other projects on the spot. He emailed me the roof quote and followed up frequently (almost daily) as I waited for other roofers to come by and give quotes. We had two other quotes that were on par or higher, but their response time was my biggest concern - the other roofers were soooo incredibly slow to respond! Once Gikas started, the roof was done very quickly (within 5 days) and the gutters were installed shortly thereafter. It was a little harder to get in touch with the owner once the project had begun and he was no longer bidding our business (we had various questions - some unrelated to the roof), but overall communication was very open and the work turned out well. The roof looks a million times better and they came back to touch up some areas of the siding that were bare because the siding shingles in that area were previously covered with 3 layers of roof. We will definitely consider Gikas for future projects and all of the workers and managers we spoke with were patient and helpful.

Company did a basic skim coating of walls and ceiling. Owner advised that the cracks in walls and ceilings would probably return in a few months due to the materials they used. Would have preferred that they been clear with the materials that they needed to use before starting the job.

I had an insurance check from a leaking skylight and damaged paint. They completed the project within in the time. They worked fast and did not make a mess of my carpet.

The painters were responsive during the planning process and arrived on time on the schedulled date. They did a great job and were very respectful of my home. I am very pleased with the service and will hire them again for future projects.

Manager was very knowledgeable about all aspects of painting and construction. The painters and carpenter that came to perform the work were very competent and did quality work. Since the extent of carpentry work was not initially known, the carpentry work was billed on an hourly basis. Angelo (carpenter) was very efficient and in hours completed work that would have taken me days. I rated responsiveness as "good" instead of "excellent" because sometimes return calls were a bit delayed and the new gutters are not installed yet.. This is not meant to dissuade anyone. I absolutely recommend Gikas and already have plans to use them for some more projects in 2016.

Job went well from the start. Polite and prompt workers. Project manager was involved and responsive. Their design consultant suggested colors of room that would make house "sell ready" for today's buyer. Several job additions -- an added bathroom, hallway and detail to stairs were reasonably priced. Painting touchups (after floor restoration was done by another contractor) was suggested by Gikas & scheduled without difficulty.

In the 8 hours that the painters were at the location, they primed the ceilings and walls in two average-sized rooms. They applied one coat of paint but did not finish painting. In their defense, the house has not been painted in many years. However, for two people to not even be able to finish two rooms in 8 hours is disappointing.

I can't say enough good things about Gikas. The last job they did for me was over a year ago and I'm posting this now, because I'm thinking of giving them a call about doing more renovation. George gave me great tips on what to do and supervised his workers. Gikas workers are superior at getting the job done; they're friendly and responsive to suggestions as they work. George not only wants to get the job done, he insists on doing it well and has a great eye for making things come together. Gikas transformed my living space as they transformed the outside of my house 4 years ago. My neighbors still comment on how good it looks.
