They were really good. They had a carpenter on hand who was excellent. I really liked their work ethic. They were efficient. They were there as long as the weather was good. They were very friendly and courteous. They were just really flexible and good to work with. They did little extra things that I asked them to do that we hadn’t discussed prior. They were very neat and they did a great job. They fixed anything that needed fixing. The carpenter did a great job of recreating part of the woodwork that needed to be replaced, and he replaced it with a handmade replica that was really good. They were very competitive with the prices that we were finding and very reasonable. The quality was very good and the paint was good quality. They were very good and very personable in person and over the phone.

We were on a tight time line to get the rooms painted, but Gikas was flexible and got the job done in time. However, about 3 or 4 days after they completed the job, the ceiling in one of the rooms already started peeling. With the craziness of moving, it took me a few weeks to call them about it. Once I did, they were professional in resolving the situation in a timely manner, even though it took 1 guy 2 days of work to sort it out. The rest of the work they did was OK -- not great. I wouldn't say their work is excellent, but it's not terrible either. However, for the price, I would have expected better.
Description of Work: We hired Gikas to paint four upstairs bedrooms before we moved in.

Response from Gikas Painting, Roofing and Restoration
I agree The job could have been better if we did'nt have a gun on our head and if we were the only contractor working on the site.We agreed on a starting date and we started as promised but then we got an unexpected deadline from costumer .It was not very easy to perform the job under stress of time and having other contractors working around. We were painting the rooms and carpentry like base mouldings etc. was'nt even finished from the other contractors. We finished it on time but it was not a substandard quality overall. We appreciate the review though. Please call us for your next projects and if we are given the sufficient time we can do that extra mile that may make the difference you expect.

From the beginning, George and his crew were extremely professional. They spent the majority of the first 2 days protecting the floors, spackling and resurfacing all of the cracks and holes in the walls. They were extremely thorough and conscientious. George was hands on, coming by to check on the progress each day and filling us in on the details. The house looked more like our home. Once the painting was completed, George's team helped to re-design our dated stair railing and banisters. He really brought our vision to reality. His team hand crafted the posts and went the extra mile to make sure that the stairs looked like our vision. After staining the railing and posts, the team returned for touch ups on the rest of the house. George's teams' level of attention to detail and professionalism was impressive. We couldn't be happier with the outcome. The pricing was very fair as well. I will definitely use Gikas again and highly recommend them.
Description of Work: George and his crew painted the entire interior of our new home including moldings. They also removed wallpaper in our half bathroom and removed wood paneling in the basement and put up sheet rock. George also enclosed some exposed heating pipes in the basement with a really beautiful looking wood molding. George also helped us re-design our entryway stair railing and banisters.

Great. See above for information
Description of Work: Asked George to come by to give impression and quote on repair or replacing sill plate on home we were selling and that our closing was scheduled that week. He came by that day and took time to explain everything and all options. He was honest and before I told him what quote we already had, he gave me his figure and was happy to accommodate any need I had with such short notice. It is rare to find a home specialist of any kind that will give you such great honest service. He even took a video of crawlspace and sill plate area to submit to our closing for proof of necessary work.

I did not end up using this provider but my experience with him was very good nonetheless.
Description of Work: I called Gikas to inquire about a free estimate on December 31st assuming no one would be able to come out until after the holiday weekend. However, George offered to come out in the early evening to provide with a quote on painting a 1-bedroom, 2 story condo. He gave me the quote right away and followed up with an email confirmation. He was punctual and very professional and gave me some good ideas, but in the end, my fiance decided to do the job himself.

The work was done almost 6 years ago.Building stairs in the front was part of the job.We also did painting and other repairs including gutters. The stairs were built according to the specifications outlined in the contract and approved by homeowner. Inspection was done from town's building official and it was approved. Stairs treads were done with mahogany and posts and railings with a combination of cedar and pine. This system of stairs and railings requires a regular maintenance especially when located on South or East direction and most likely it has been neglected by costumer. We have done hundreds of stairs systems over the years and we don't get complaints when maintenance is done periodically. I dont think anything is wrong with the way we built those stairs, after all it was approved by the building inspector, however l would like to take a look at them;l havent heard from you for so many years

They were excellent and the job they did at our town home was top notch. Cristina was always overseeing the work and easy to get in touch with. Very professional and accommodating.
Description of Work: We closed on a townhouse in the middle of July and had to move in 15 days later. Gikas was able to accommodate us within that short period of time by having the work done in less time than we expected. We had engaged them to paint our interior of our home and garage, install crown moulding, carpentry work with our kitchen cabinets, repair and power stain our wooden deck.

The room looks immaculate. The transition from wood to plaster is clean and looks very professional. Gikas has very competitive prices (always significantly under the other estimates that we receive) and the work is done very professionally. I have and would hired them for other work. We also hired Gikas to paint our large master bedroom (a lot of detailed wood around the doors and windows) and another room in our house where we had removed the wallpaper, but needed professionals to spackle and repair the walls and paint. The price for this two room job was 900. If I could have this work redone I would have asked them to use a filler between the wood and the plaster like they did in the dining room (later in the year), but overall this job was done very professionally. The rooms looks great.
Description of Work: Our craftsman house was built in 1911 and has a cherry wood paneled dining room. Gikas removed wallpaper on the upper part of the wall, filled sections between the plaster and the wood with a filler (to fill in the cracks) and painted our dining room.

My 1928 cedar-shake Dutch colonial was in need of some outside work as the result of time and a shoddy sanding and exterior paint job from 10 years ago. It also needed repair to some of the wood shakes as well as to a back porch that was damaged in the winter. In addition, I could see that some areas of the roof were also in need of attention. I had resigned myself to siding the house since that seems to be the current popular solution, but in the end, I just couldn?t go through it. I did not want to hide the beautiful architectural details of this older home behind vinyl. I have an average income and I couldn?t afford to get the kind of ?wood? look that I still wanted to maintain with siding. Additionally, the repair work seemed to be more extensive than the siding companies that I contacted would take on. This meant calling and getting quotes from contractors who would repair the wood damage (one quote was for $8,000) but would not paint. Many contractors now only do siding. In comes Gikas Painting & Restoration. You?ve heard of the ?horse whisperer;? then, there was the ?dog whisperer;? and now, there's the ?house whisperer.? The ?house whisperer?? Yes, the house whisperer is George, the first person you?ll likely encounter when you place a call to Gikas. After researching Angie?s List, Gikas was one of three painting companies I called for a free estimate. George (as well as the others) called back the same day and we arranged to meet the following morning. After I gave George the tour and explained the various things that I wanted done, I knew immediately that this was the right company to hire. First, Gikas would be able to do all of the work that I wanted ? painting, carpentry, roofing and gutter repair. I couldn?t believe it! There went the headache of trying to coordinate three or four different entities, dealing with the problem of who can start when and who will do what and the lack of communication that can happen when you have too many ?specialists.? Specialist does not always translate into expert and expertise is exactly what I got from George. I have never spoken with anyone as knowledgeable about every aspect of home construction as George. He told me things about my house that, after 40 years, I had never noticed. He can read the ?bones? of the house and tell you how it was originally constructed, what changes have been made, and which changes and repairs were done well, and if not, where the resulting problems lie. As we toured the house, George not only explained how they would accomplish the jobs that I needed but also how they would correct issues that I didn?t even realize were there but which would detract from or jeopardize the quality of the work that they would perform. These are not ?extra charges? but simply part and parcel, for Gikas, of what doing a good job means. Also, if you want someone with an eye, with a vision, for what will best highlight the positive elements of your home, George is the man. He advised me on my choices and told me that when the house was done, it would be brought to a whole new level, and he was right. I am thrilled with the results: the house has never looked better and thanks to Gikas? way of working, of fixing not hiding problems, the house is ready to go for another 85 years. A few words about Gikas? way of working: At the initial contact, I was given a price by George and then I received a detailed contract by e-mail. From then on, it was easy to contact George by e-mail and he responded very quickly to every e-mail that I sent. I also called his cell phone several times over the course of the work and received prompt responses. A few times, I called the main office number and those messages were relayed and responded to quickly as well. Although various crews actually performed the work and George was not there for the majority of the time, whenever I spoke to him, he knew every detail of what had been done, what problems had been encountered and how they had been resolved. George did get involved with the work at critical times when the resolution of a problem ? in this case, a sagging soffit -- required his years of experience to help fix. The one to three young men who handled the sanding/painting parts of the job were excellent. They were extremely hardworking and were courteous and accommodating whenever I inquired about the work or expressed a desire to have something redone more to my liking. Several neighbors have already come up to me and mentioned how impressed they were with the meticulous work of the painting crew. Unlike my neighbors, I couldn?t always see what was going on, but I am told that they?ve never seen such attention to detail. The foreman, who led the other two painters, also did the carpentry. Again, an excellent job! While the slow-drying oil-based primer was left to dry for a few days, a separate crew came in to do the roof. They tore off the old roof, replaced the wood where needed and improved the ventilation of the roof. They, too, deserve mention for their fantastic work. I?m glad that I let George direct me on the color of the roof, choosing a charcoal gray rather than the light gray that the house has always had, because the darker color enhances both the new paint color as well as the beautiful Dutch colonial features of the house. If there?s one negative to working with Gikas Painting, it?s this: After hiring them, I don't? believe you?ll ever want to use anyone else for any type of work your home might need. In fact, I had tentative plans to have a local handyman work on some interior sanding and staining to my interior wood trim, starting next week. I?ve decided instead to get an estimate from George and, even if it?s a little more, to wait and save the difference (if there is one) so that I can work with Gikas again. I know the results will be worth it. I?m sure Gikas is not the least expensive company that I could have gotten to do the job, but from the other estimates I received, I know that they are certainly not the most expensive. In fact, I was relieved when the quote I was given for the painting, carpentry, and roof was less than just the siding would have been. Really, I was amazed and delighted to find that the price from Gikas was fair and in my budget range. Lastly, as a single woman acquiring quotes and making the final hiring decisions myself, I never felt taken advantage of or not taken seriously by anyone I dealt with at Gikas. That is why I am giving them such a rave review as well as kudos to Angie?s List for helping me to make such informed decisions.
Description of Work: New Roof; Repair of soffits; added ridge vents for better ventilation of attic. They arrived in a timely fashion and worked in a clean orderly fashion. All the debris and removed gutters were taken away and the work area was left clean. The house looks like it's appreciated more than the cost of the paint job. I would recommend their services to anyone require profession, detail oriented work. We'd used them for our previous house and they were very prompt and considerate when we had some last minute touch-up before we put the house on the market.
Description of Work: They stripped areas of the house that were sorely in need of it. (This is a recently purchased house that probably had not been painted in more than 10 years.) They power washed and prepped the rest of the house. The house is covered in a vertically oriented ship lap cedar. Because of the lack of maintenance, there were gaps in all the overlaps on the southern (sunny) exposure. Gikas caulked and filled all the exposed gaps and the more severe knot holes. They also replaced all the gutters and leaders with a size larger than had been previously installed (and not maintained - little saplings should NOT be sprouting from the gutters).

George and his team did a good job. George was very responsive and thorough when initially reviewing the job and giving us a quote. During the job, he met with us multiple times on evenings and weekends to review work. He also sent his guys back to finish or fix certain things at the end and even did a little of it himself on a Sunday! He made sure we were happy with the end product. The job took longer than originally quoted but not by too much and that usually happens with most contracting work anyway.

Working with Gikas was a lousy experience. It took 3 estimates (including my time meeting him) for George to finalize things and I never got anything in writing. He tried to upsell me a $22,000 new roof, which we agreed I'd need in 3-5 years. But not now. So for now, we agreed on about $7000 in work, a bunch of smaller stuff (including a new garage roof). Then it took MONTHS for him to start, after repeated contacts by phone and email ... His nice receptionist finally got him to schedule the work, informing me he didn't return my calls because he was with his lawyer. (Why am I not surprised?) So they show up, finally and do the garage roof. Work was adequate, but I was picking up nails and garage shingles and sharp wood chips for a few days on my driveway where the kids play and we park our cars. I guess George doesn't own a broom. Then, more calls and scheduling and a couple months later they do HALF THE WORK WE AGREED TO. That work was adequate. He did what I paid him for, BUT? his guys left a mess at each worksite around the house. There is some excess paint on my siding by the rear deck and on my front patio because they were sloppy. After many emails to get him to finish the job, I finally told him I'd find a more reliable contractor. So he's out $3400, I'm out a few months of time and lots of aggravation. He's going to respond that I should have told him, and he would have addressed the mess and removed the paint. But I was waiting for him to respond & begin the other work, and I was waiting, and waiting and waiting. And besides, I spend enough time yelling at my kids to clean up their mess, and I don't pay them $7000. I guess use him if you have a big job... he's clearly too busy for a $7000 job, and I of course will not use him for my $20k roof in the future. Oh, he was VERY PROMPT to show up and ask to be paid.

Response from Gikas Painting, Roofing and Restoration
Here is our response to [name removed] The work that we agreed to do for $7000 was in writing;please check your email;the quote was actually broken down for each item. We first did the garage roof and no it did not take months to start that;it took a couple of weeks to schedule the job and we finished the garage roof in one day.We did not leave the job site without cleaning. We use magnetic sweeper to pick up nails and not necessary a broom. We returned later with the painters to do several tasks and they were completed in time and in a satisfactory way.As per your email dated August 08 everything was done except 3 items like the gutter replacement for which l was not sure whether it was the right thing to do now as those gutters have behind them most likely deteriorated fascia boards and those fascia boards sit underneath the cedar shingles of the original roof so l felt uncomfortable to do this project at this time as it was not right for the system of gutters to function;i judged it better to do it when the roof is going to be replaced That is where everything changed and l became the bad contractor. I am not too busy for any job [name removed] After you notified me that you no longer want to use our service and wanted me to come and pickup the sign l stop by to do that and l knocked on door to try to talk to you.Your son answered the door and l never ask him for payment(probably that is what you assumed when you saw me pulling in your driveway) By the way you should be prompt to pay for the services rendered. Its been several weeks that you received the invoice and l haven't seen the check yet.

My first experience hiring George of Gikas in the Spring of 2014 involved an extensive renovation of a rental apartment in the same multi-family house that was a state of total disrepair and deterioration. The apartment needed a total restoration. George transformed this "wreck" into a beautiful apartment which looked new and rented instantly. George fulfilled his proposals precisely and in the time frame as promised. When another apartment in the same multi-family house was in need of some restoration and painting, I did not hesitate to consult with George. Because I knew I could trust him to deliver 100% in excellence and timing on any work, I decided to hire him to do more than basic painting. George's design ideas are so creative. He can solve any problem and presented a plan to me to reconfigure the awkward living space in the apartment, once again transforming a unit into a comfortable and aesthetically pleasing place. George and his crew (painters, carpenters, plumbers, electricians) are top professionals, honest and reliable with the highest level of skills. George was always available for consultation throughout the projects. Thank you, George!

George Gikas has in our opinion provided excellent service to our home. The quality of work demonstrates itself. We've already got folks commenting on how well our home looks. The garage had been neglected for many many years (prior to our purchasing the home). At this time, you couldn't tell that it was in such shape. His team is punctional and works very hard-specifically with the details. I am very impressed and expect to continue to utilize Gikas for other projects we have coming to fruition in the near term. Thank you GIKAS, you've transformed our home and we are grateful to you and your team.

From start to finish Gikas Painting was on point. George showed up on time if not early to every appointment we had. Out of 5 other contractors all from Angies List not only were they the best priced but also the most knowledgable. I have used Gikas Painting for 3 other jobs since painting , tiling , construction , anything that I have given to them they can handle with ease. I would definitely recommend them to friends and family!

Really disappointing. Mr. Gikas spent about an hour at my house scoping out a major project and promised the written estimate in a week. I called after 2 weeks had passed and several days after that he gave me a number (over 25K) over the phone. Said the written estimate would be mailed. Called after a week, sent an email, then called again after another week and have pretty much given up. If these guys can't call back they probably can't stick to a schedule either. Don't waste your time trying to get an estimate.

Yes We gave an estimate over the phone .That was $27700 and that was the number reflecting all the work that l spent one hour to go over details per details. Costumer did not show any interes in that number(at least that was my perception) and l thought l did not have to spend at least 2 hours to write everything TO ALL ANGIES LIST MEMBERS! MOST LIKELY YOU WILL GET A DETAILED QUOTE FROM GIKAS ON THE SPOT. ALSO EVERY DETAIL OF THE WORK THAT GEORGE MENTION TO YOU DURING PRESENTATION INCLUDING THE PRICE WILL BE FOLLOWED IN AN ORTHODOX WAY.PERIOD! EVEN WHEN YOU DONT GET A DETAILED QUOTE

This review is for a project done last March 2014. I waited for the review to see what changes are going to happen given the different elements the house is exposed to during this changing season. The result was perfect. The house has gotten a lot of compliments. The crew that did my house were very efficient and professional. They work fast, they clean the house each day they finish work and they are very patient as I was having a hard time deciding on the color. They also repaired a broken garage door panel which saved me thousands of dollars from completely replacing it. I would definitely hire them again should I need them in the future.
