Handyman Connection - Bergen County

Buyer beware. While it is not clear from their website, there will be a minimum a handyman will likely charge you for the work that they do regardless of the job. So be prepared to shell out $50-$65 to have them step foot in your house even if the "job" amounts to nothing. This is sanctioned by the owner as good practice. Of note was the owner's willingness to lose a customer who had been satisfied in the past and would have likely utilized their services for years to come over this issue.

My initital call was answered promptly by Valerie who said she would have one of the handymen call me right away. The next day I got a call from Gary and we set up a time the next day for him to come look at the job. He arrived promptly and gave us an estimate which seemed fair. He had some other jobs he was working on and asked it a week or two for the repair would be OK - which it was. He called the next week and we set up a time for him to come and do the job. Arrived on time, worked neatly, and did a great job. I would definitely use this service again.

Steve was on time, professional, & competant. Accurately determined what needed to be done. Reasonable charge. Bill matched estimate. Seemed to really care about doing the job right. Came back a second day for finishing touches.

I found them on Angie's List. I have used them before. They came over right away and did whatever I asked them to do. They are very efficient and did the job quickly. They were very nice.

They were very prompt and very thorough. They fixed a few things and also helped me with a couple of other things that I didn't think could be fixed. They were excellent.

Robert Vandenberg worked methodically, was very conscientious and thorough. Several visits were made due to the nature of the job. He was always prompt, courteous and clean. I would highly recommend this company for fitting the right person to the job and to Robert for providing exactly what was asked. He did an excellent job.

They were excellent. I liked the fact that they got back to me right away. They came when they said they were going to. They did the job with the amount that they said they were going to. The guy Kevin who worked on the steps was just a pleasure. He was just terrific. He was neat and orderly. It was just a nice experience after a couple of bad ones. So the whole thing was very good. They were right there with the price. It was such a pleasure working with them. I had a good experience with them. I will use their services again in the future.

They sent a person to my house. I have mixed feelings about them. I felt I was overcharged for the work that was done. When I looked them up on Angie’s List, they were described as inexpensive. The price was one of the criteria I had used to choose them. However, the guy went above and beyond in terms of charging me. I told him that I was a senior citizen. He gave me a discount, but he managed to overcharge me on everything. He even charged me for getting to the house, for setting up, and for cleaning up. I would not use this company again in the future. They ripped me off. I do not want others to have a bad experience as I did. I was shocked to hear that he was charging me for setting up and for cleaning up. He charged me $150 for the same. It was totally outrageous. I would not recommend them unless they change their demeanor. He charged me $1,000. He went down to $900, owing to a discount that I had requested. He was not very willing to give me the discount. He gave me some coupons that he had. He said that I had to give him back the coupons. It was ridiculous. I had him install a few doors and he overcharged me by $15 per door. I spent about $889 totally on the job. He was going to install two doors, but he ended up installing just one. The first job that he did was ridiculously expensive. The job included painted a window frame (32”x27’’), which he made out of four pieces on the outside. He charged me $146 for the doing the outside and the inside. I ended up painting the inside. It was really unfair. I bought the paint for the job. He charged me 8.5% as tax on the same. The second bill was for $888. I was in a rush to complete the job, as I had another job waiting to be done. So, I did not pay much attention to the amount charged. When I saw that the job on the window cost me a lot, I was really shocked. I did not want to get into an argument with him. When I questioned him, he said it was the price. He was going to charge me $195 for installation of two doors. For putting two doors on their tracks, he charged me $35 each. For trimming two doors that did not close properly, he charged me $135. I had installed new blinds. When the old ones were removed, there were two corners on the sides that needed to be worked on. The touchup work on two windows and two sliders came up to $130. I ended up doing most of the work. He was supposed to do the painting work, but he did not. He ended up getting the wrong wood for the molding, which did not match the floor. I ended up painting all the material. However, he charged me $195 for installation of shoe molding. He charged $140 for material pickup, setup, and cleanup. I had to coach him and had to make sure that he did the job to satisfaction while he did the doors. He had to redo it a couple of times because he would do a quick job initially. He was not an excellent handyman. He took a lot of time. I would not have had a problem helping out, but I did not like his overcharging me. Now, I have to make do with the shoe molding with the wrong wood. However, he did put the right saddle, which was made of oak. Now, the shoe molding does not match the oak floors. The week that he did work in was very hot. There was a day when I had to ask him to cut the job short as it was very hot. He was an old guy and I was being very considerate when I asked him to go home. This further disappointed me when he overcharged me. I will not use the company again in the future.

He was very professional, called to let me know when he was on his way, did a thorough job, and left everything cleaner than I had it. Plus, my dog thinks he's great. As a result of his work, I'm having him do another job for us.

We had leaks in the bathroom. The original shower walls were regular sheet rock so the bottom portion of the shower walls were bowing out due to water leaking through the old grout. The shower tile and floor needed replacement. I contacted Handyman Connection and Dan Tamburro came and gave me an estimate. I asked him to start as soon as possible. I ordered and paid for all the wede board, tile, fixtures, faucets, shower doors, etc. which was around $4200. Dan and Sean came as soon as the delivery was made. The bathroom had been previously demo'd so they were able to work quickly and get the job done. The shower was done first, then the bathtub tile surround, and then the floor. They worked quickly and kept the work site clean. They always kept me informed of what they were working on and when the job would be completed. Dan and Sean were pleasant to work with and even the dog liked them. I would definitely recommend Dan and Sean! Thank you for all your hard work!

Terrific from start to finish. Exactly on time for appointments, and highly professional throughout. Quote was fair, and final cost came in exactly as promised. Great work, and never left a mess. Very respectful of my home. He even went the extra mile to pick up the right paint for the job. I would use them again.

The woman was very nice. I described the work I needed done. She indicated I needed to speak with Steve the owner. He was very nice on the phone. He indicated that he could do the jobs I needed. I told him I had Friday off from work and I could make myself available. He said that would work and he would get back in contact with me. I called Thursday and spoke to the woman again. I indicated that Steve was supposed to call me back. She said that if he had not called me back he was not coming. I took her attitude to mean she was not interested in my business.

I placed a call and informed Handyman Connection what I required. The two people at the company were very informative, professional and courteous. They gave me the name of the individual the following day. We set an appointment and he came to the home to view all the services I required that were numerous as I have put my home up for sale. This was a Friday. I asked him when I could expect the estimate and he responded he would get back to me in a couple of days. Tuesday night at 5pm I called him, left a message. I wanted to know if he was interested in the job and if he was what the estimate is. I needed to get the work done as the house was up for sale. He called the following day, left a message that he was not interested in the job--there was too much work involved!

Gary arrived promptly and worked all day to complete a beautiful painting job on our bathroom.

When I called Handyman Connection and spoke with Stephen he was concerned that the woodpecker was after bugs living behind the cedar shingles and was hesitant to do the repairs before I had the insect issue addressed. I did have an exterminator come and take a look and he found no evidence of insects. I had researched and found that woodpeckers will use drumming or pecking to attract a mate and to establish territory. This fellow managed to put quite a few small holes in my shingles but also pecked several holes between an inch and 3 inches in diameter! Once I assured Stephen that bugs were not an issue he assigned the job to David Moser who called me and stopped in that same evening to a**** the job. Dave purchased the shingles that night, took a sample to get a paint match and was back the next morning. He primed and painted the shingles and replace the ones that needed replacing and patched the smaller holes and painted over them. The job was completed quickly and professionally. I'll definitely check with Stephen and Handyman Connection for future work.

The quote was reasonable. They actually went and sent back the quote. You can talk to him. He was a very nice guy and gave a very good estimate. We asked him some questions and he was knowledgeable and friendly.

The project was pretty high up on our home, but they were able to complete it. The worker was very conscientious and patient throughout the project. I was very pleased overall.

I had a number of people look at the window, and nobody could close it. They actually felt bad for charging $65 to come out and look at it. The guy spent a good 20 minutes trying to work on it, but he was unable to close it. They were very helpful, all around. They came the same day. They were very friendly. The company owner was very helpful and friendly.

Very well; Bill Little was a very nice guy. He gave us an original estimate, and then charged us less because he said the project took less time. Bill was polite, on time, called to let me know when he would be there each day.

A handyman was sent on very short notice. Completed the job. When a mistake was made he returned next business day and corrected it. Very professional and it was good to know handyman connection would help if it wasn't corrected.

David Moser was on time, looked at the situation and gave an estimate. He is coming back to do the work.
