Overall an excellent experience. I was looking to soundproof my apartment from noisy neighbors above. Soundproofing requires a particularly diligent contractor and specific attention to detail. After interviewing multiple contractors, it was clear that Tom was the best choice. My instincts were correct. He was great to work with throughout the process and really went above and beyond. I would recommend him for any countracting job. Excellent communication. Quality work. Trustworthy.

Thomas Shinn was responsive, helpful and insightful. We reached out to him for a quote to repair our patio. Within a few days he came to the house and provided us with information on how to repair the deck ourselves. He followed up with multiple emails that included instructions on how to do the work and images of supplies needed. Thomas seems to be a jack of all trades and we may call him if we need electrical work done outside.
Description of Work: Provided us with lots of helpful information.

Tom was excellent. He first reassured me (after I asked) that no job was too small for this company (named "General Contractor"). He is local, and treated me like a neighbor. He was prompt, communicative. After the job was completed and he left, he followed up later with me via text to make sure that all was still well with the new spigot. The price, especially for our area, was more than reasonable. I am no doubt going to follow up with Tom for other projects (e.g. masonry) that my home needs.

They did an amazing job in the middle of winter and provided a one year warranty on their work. They kept us informed throughout about progress and they finished on time on a very tight schedule (we moved in hours after they resealed the back wall). We used them since for a couple of more jobs since we trust their team and have recommended them to friends.

I called and talked to this lady - Sofina - and give her an idea of what I am looking for. She was quick to schedule an appointment, and I recommended that she look at my RFP to get a better idea and a rough estimate before proceeding to the next step. I think this is very reasonable of me to be meticulous enough in providing information to this contractor. I don't think that she even read my proposal before emailing me to schedule a date on May 29th. I emailed back and said that I would prefer a rough estimate before any on-site visitation. Then I got an email from Thomas Shinn with only this message "No visit no estamate. Find someone else." (verbatim) Really??? That was tacky! There are no reason to be so crass. (not to mentioned that he could not properly write a normal sentence). And to call me to find someone else - that is just downright unnecessary and rude. I don't know how this guy got such a glowing review from others. The arrogance and rudeness on this initial point of contact makes me thankful that he showed his true color before having any work done with him. He is the type of contractor on the reason why I write the detailed RFP - to filter people who are rude and not serious about providing good and pleasant services. I don't want to deal with people like that in my home. I would think twice (no make it three times) about working with someone like him. Total fail!
Description of Work: I need to get an estimate on the cost of implementing a drop ceiling, a complete paint job and installation of lightings. I took the effort to write a Request for Proposal (RFP) detailing the square footage of my apartment, in details the kind of work that I would like to get done. I did this because I want to give a realistic idea of what I am doing - which hopefully will lead to on-site visit and consultation.

We have been in business for close to a decade at this point. Dealt with many different people and wasted countless amount of time being used for house purchase negotiations, price shopping for the lowest bidders, etc… if you ever worked with us in the past we are detailed oriented and take a long time to do an estimate. This is to guarantee that our estimate is based on condition and work. Our clients never over pay for the estimated parts costs due to our diligence during our estimated process. When an individual calls and tells us that they want an estimate from us but we cannot visit the site tells me few things. Shopping for prices, do not own the house or simply finding out how much their wish build will cost without any intention of doing any work. As a company policy we do not give an estimate if we cannot visit the site. How can we provide a realistic estimate if we have no idea of the condition of the current work location. Most home owners unless they are an engineer or an architect even do not see what we see as problem or concerned areas that will change the project costs. There is no way for us to estimate anything if you send us a wish list with an uncertified computer drawings and sample pictures from the internet. This does not give us any base of a realistic estimate. By refusal of us visiting the site means they are not interested in the actual work and/or individual has other reason unknown to us to have our estimate to be used for other reasons out side of what it is intended. We have a policy where we charge for “pre purchase estimate”. This is when you do not own the house but in mist of negotiating on the final cost of a home… Bottom here is he refused to let us visit the location and did not provide us with “sealed” technical drawings hence our refusal to bid on this job. Perhaps less busy or less experience company might do this estimate but we decided to pass. We will no longer be posting any response via angie’s list due to these types of reviews. We would gladly take full credit good or bad if we had any dealings with the individual that is reviewing us. All of our complainers on this site has never worked with us and/or mistaken us with someone else. what we found in the past year if you pay $10 to this website you can post any damaging review with or without any bases on the truth. We will no longer be associated with any company that allows anyone to slander our company reputation for $10 membership fee and take no responsibility of verifying if the posts are true.

Thomas, Scott, and other staff were extremely professional, courteous, prompt, and informative. Thomas, the owner, provided a very detailed written estimate of all the equipment, supplies, and labor costs. I found this to be very helpful as several of the other contractors that provided estimates gave ballpark figures. He was very helpful in the selection of the appliances and other hardware as well as vendor/supplier selection. The work started on schedule and was completed within the time frame that was outlined in the proposal. TGC handled all the permit acquisitions and pickups/exchanges at equipment suppliers (tiles, appliances, lighting, etc). I've had experiences in the past where contractors would not show up or had to be tracked down, this was absolutely not the case with this firm. All calls were returned promptly, staff were onsite when they were supposed to be and they stayed several evenings and weekends in order to finish on time. I was happy with the costs for the services that were performed and any deviations from the original estimates were discussed and explained. When the job was complete, it was really complete; there were no loose ends or follow-up required. All loose ends were tied up and questions answered before the left. Thomas always took time to answer questions, provide information, address the pros and cons of different equipment and design scenarios. I highly recommend TGC and will use them in the future.

My insurance company gave me $2,000.00 to repair and replace the roof. We wanted the roof removed and the deck fixed up. Thomas was quick to respond and was very helpful in helping me decide the best way to use the money. I had tons of questions, and he was very patient with me. He came to the house twice to help me with all of my questions. When we decided what we wanted on a Thursday, he scheduled my repairs for the following Monday. I've never had a better experience than this!

Thomas and Scott scheduled a convenient time to give us an estimate. They were honest with us and did not suggest ripping everything apart when a cosmetic change would be more cost effective. They were also very flexible and helpful because we could not afford to be out of the apartment for more than 3 nights. They worked around our schedule, and all of the work was done in 4 days. They worked quickly efficiently, and everything was done well. While they were there, we added some items to the list and Scott quickly priced them out. They even came back after the work was done to fix a sticking door. After all of it, they came in under budget! We were incredibly happy with the work and their level of responsiveness.
Description of Work: We had a large list of small repairs for the interior of our apartment: adding a saddle over tile edge, complete interior painting, new tiling, new baseboard and quarter-round, installing a new microwave.

They came out on a Sunday to look at it and gave me the estimate 4 to 5 days later. The only thing that I had an issue with was that I was emailing the company for a couple of days and then they told me they could not start mine because they were working on another project. They were good, punctual and responded to me.

Nobody in our office has any knowledge of this job or address. She may have confused us for another company because that is not how we conduct our business.
Overall, a mixed experience. On the plus side, Tom is a good communicator, very responsive, provides prompt written quotes, keeps his appointments and returns phone calls. He is generally quite knowledgeable and is much more educated than your average contractor. He provided us with a very good solution for renovating our living room, and some of his work was excellent. Some of his work was not good, however, and there were some major issues, however, that were never satisfactorily resolved. Garage Door. Two problems with the installation of the garage door. When Tom began the project, we had power in the garage. After he removed the existing door, he reported that there was no longer power in the garage. The only explanation for this is that in the removal of the existing door, he somehow severed the line between the house and the garage. (It was buried and he could not locate the conduit. Tom's solution was to jerry rig an exterior line from our outside light to the garage. This was unsightly and did not conform to code. Eventually we hired an electrician to run a new line to the garage, which involved digging a new trench under our patio, etc, at a significant cost to us to say the least. The second problem with the garage door is that he never installed an exterior release, meaning that if we lose power or the door mechanism malfunctions, it is impossible to open the garage door. This is exactly what eventually happened, again causing a major headache and expense. (When I contacted Tom about this issue, he informed me that he did not provide a "workmanship warrantee" and refused to address the problem.) The front and back door installations each had problems. We ordered a very expensive wooden front door and side panels, costing thousands of dollars. We selected the style, Tom ordered. When the door arrived, it was hung on the right side, instead of the existing left side. This was a careless oversight on his part. The new front door was prehung, but when installed it did not close properly. Tom wanted to plane the door, which I absolutely refused. A prehung door should open and close perfectly, and the only reason it did not was because it hadn't been installed properly. Tom was able to make some adjustments which helped, but did not entirely resolve the problem. The back door included a glass storm door. To install the storm door, Tom had reconstructed the door frame. After about a year that came apart and the door fell off. The back door proper was never quite right and does not provide a complete seal from the weather. Unless the temperature is below 40 degrees, the deadbolt is extremely tight. In our living room we had a large mirror, about three feet by five feet, on the wall that had to be removed for the wall to be painted. Tom broke the mirror in the removal process. His solution was to cut the mirror down and leave us with a smaller mirror. Eventually he simply left the mirror in our back yard for us to deal with. At the end of the project, there was a very small balance of under $200. This represented a portion of sales tax that had been added to the bill. I questioned why he was charging us sales tax, because these were capital improvements which do not incur sales tax. Tom refused to accept a capital improvement certificate, giving me some nonsense that it had to be given at the beginning of the project. Tom was insistent that he must collect this sales tax, which I refused to pay. Some of Tom's work was excellent. The roof that he installed has never leaked, and the renovation of the living room was quite good. Regarding the overall rating. This was difficult. If I were to rate him on the doors, I would give him a D or and F. For the interior work, I would give him an A. The C rating reflects the overall quality of his work and the other difficulties. I see that Tom has responded with the "disgruntled customer" line. How original. As my review clearly stated, there was a tiny balance which Tom tried to collect from me, which was sales tax, which I did not and do not owe. I did not ask Tom to do more work. I asked him to help me with the garage door because he did not install the exterior release. I tried to be objective about my review, and I did note the positives. Every word in my review is true.
Description of Work: Tom performed several projects for me. He renovated our mud room, installed a new roof over the mud room, installed a new front door and side panels for the front of our house, he renovated and painted our living room, and he installed a new garage door.

This is a disgruntle past client who still owes us past bill from 2008. When we try to collect four years ago he simply refused to communicate with us to resolve on this matter. We tried email, phone calls and letters. No response. After four years he has contacted us again to do more work for him at this location. Which we refused due to our past experience with him. Now after two days of our refusal he posts this review for work we did four years ago. ???? If this is your company would you honor any warrantee (none given in his case) if a client refused to pay or communication on the final bill. He states on this website that the front and back door came apart after one year and after 3 years of having these door in bad condition you are letting us know now. If it did happen as he claims why didn’t he call us 3 years ago when it came apart???? Bottom line here is why is he calling us back to do more work for him if we did such as bad job the first time around. And why this bad review only after our refusal of work for him in the future. It is unfortunate that there are bad contractors out there people have to deal with but this door works both ways.

Projects went well and the contractor kept me informed of the work along each stage making it easy by sending photos as well.

Thomas left and we never persued anything further.
Description of Work: I needed drywall/ceiling repairs and painting due to water damage. Thomas came out promptly to assess the repairs and although i told him that I wanted the ceiling cracks, etc. to be done completely, he kept insisting that he would just repair the hole, spackle the cracks, and "feather" the paint in. The paint on the ceiling is four years old. I thought the whole ceiling needed painting. He kept insisting that he does this all the time and "feathers" the paint to make it more affordable. I kept insisting that I just wanted the job to be done right. He was argumentative and kept insisting the same thing. Finally, I told him that I came to the conclusion that we just can't get along. Needless to say, I never proceeded with an estimate or anything else. I have had 5 other estimates, and each contractor/handyman said that the ceiling would have to be painted to look right.
