Description of Work: Waste of my money. Got 2 handymen for 4 hours and they barely got items on my list done. Simple tasks (hanging pix, a shelf, rack, etc) that require one person but instead they both worked on them and took twice as long. And many things they said they would not or could not do. |And when I spoke to Angie's list about the poor quality and misleading offer, they were NO help at all in helping me get a partial refund. |I would NOT recommend this contractor or use Angie's list again!!!!

Description of Work: I purchased the big deal package quoted at $5499 to redo a bathroom. When Lloyd came out to look at our project there were a lot of items we wanted done that were not included. We agreed to apply the materials allowance to labor, pay an additional $2400 and purchase all the materials ourselves. We replaced the tub with a stand up shower, got rid of dated gray tile that I have hated forever, replaced the vanity and toilet. Both Lloyd and Myron were courteous and easy going and we liked them a great deal so I was hesitant to give them an unfavorable review, especially since I was so pleased with our bright new look. However, once they were gone we realized that there were mortar and grout globs all over the floor and walls that required a chisel to remove and the wood floor outside the bathroom will need to be refinished. As we cleaned the tile we realized that the installation was uneven, the join between the cement board and dry wall hadn't been taped so the bullnose edge is rough and the new shower base was chipped and dinged. We have redone bathrooms ourselves previously and decided to have the "pros" do this one and just get it done. I am disappointed in the overall quality of this renovation and wish we had done the tile work our selves. The major benefit was demolition and removal of the debris.

This is a tough one because our guys loved this member and her husband. They were a pleasure to deal with and even gave our guys a tip upon completion. But this is where I am confused. We have a process of having a brief walk-thru at the end od each work day when we do a home improvement project. Our guys show the progress and any problems before they leave for the day. We never just walk out and go home. The homeowner is fully aware of the progress. This member's home was built in the 1870's - just after the Civil War and Lincoln's presidency. I mention this because of this member mentioned that the tile work was subpar. We have pictures of this entire renovation including the gutted bathroom stage and the uneven/ patchwork framing. The new sheetrock and cement board in the shower and walls outside the shower we bowed as a result. This was pointed out early in the process and has an obvious affect on the tiling. They could have paid extra to have the walls leveled but they did not want that. It would have been a time consuming and laborious task but this is the homeowner's option. We have pictures and think the renovation looked great. They approved final payment after the walk-thru, gave a tip and gave no mention of anything but complete satisfaction until a month later when they apparently noticed something. They also have a 12 month warranty and was notified if they are unhappy with anything to let us know and we will come back to fix because we are based just a mile away in Hoboken.

I signed the contract for $4,300. He was a general contractor and he told me that he would do the bathroom and kitchen. He did a pathetic job. He came in, was walking at 11 o clock in the afternoon to start work and would tell me since the beginning to buy the materials at Home Depot. It’s amazing that he would go to us to go get the materials every day. We had to go to the material guys although we didn’t understand. We had to throw him out. He keeps asking for money. He took three of my payments and did not do a good job at all. He left all of the sites and me venting up with another general contractor. I just had to throw him out. He was constantly asking for money. They were talking very big, as if they were very professional but they were not at all professional. I would never recommend him nor use him again in the future. Do not go with this person. He was not at all responsive. He would not pick up phone calls. Even the work that he did, we had to push him all the time and ask if he’s going in that day, talk to him nicely and micromanage him. If he was not interested in the job and he thought it was too small. He should have just apologized and told us he could not take the job of this size.

The statements in this members review goes so against what really took place that I am unsure if she is confusing us with another company or it is just an outright fabrication of the truth. Unfortunately after reviewing all of our correspondences with this member I suspect it is the latter. We had a simple yet straightforward contract to renovate a very small kitchen and bath. It outlined a payment schedule based on the work completed yet every time we reached those milestones this member would refuse to honor the agreement she signed. ( Any member that would like to see the contract, the emails mas well as the photos of the work are welcomed and we will provide). This member asked us to enter her building before the building's 9am start time and the doorman acknowledged that this member likes to push the buildings rules and is overly demanding. When doing a renovation and taking walls down there are many unknowns so we cannot have all possible supplies, equipment and materials with us. We are not a giant construction company and $4300 to renovate a kitchen and a bathroom is a price that does not allow us to expend funds on unnecessary materials. Our crew did so much for her without charge but she just kept asking for more and more for free. My company is not perfect, and we have and will make mistakes but in this case I am simply stunned by the deceit in the above statements.

At first Lloyd was pretty responsive, coming over right away to give a quote. He was very nice and seemed exceptionally knowledgeable about his craft. He seemed honest and upfront. He quoted a labor cost of $450 for one bookshelf and was going to assist us in ordering the materials directly. This all sounded wonderful. (I put $800 in cost of services because I assume he would have charged double for two bookshelves instead of one) However, after he came to give the quote it became almost impossible to get in touch with him. I would text his cell phone and he would not respond for days. When I finally texted him that I needed to know if I should get someone else to do the work, he basically said yes get someone else. It was a huge waste of time and delayed a lot of other work on the house. He clearly works a day job and does this work on the side after work when he has time. I can understand that can be hard to manage, but you cannot hold yourself out to be a business and then treat it like a hobby you will do when you have time. Businesses have to be somewhat reliable.

I hope the members that read this review understand that we did not do any work for this member. A quote was provided and our field manager felt that this member was speaking to him disrespectfully so he refused the job. FYI: As far as I know his day job is with us. Spring and summer just happen to be the busy seasons for home improvement so we tend to have less patience with people who treat our representatives rudely.

Lloyd came in and assessed the situation and I showed him what I needed done. He said He needed to go get some materials and he would be back. Came back an hour later with materials and some more help. In a little more than an hour, they re-grouted areas of my bathroom wall that had been cracked, re-caulked the bathtub, and patched a hole in the wall. I would say that they were able to match the grout to be very close to the original, and did a good job on the wall and tub. Was very happy, and would gladly use them again and recommend them for anyone else.

The painting job that they did was absolutely perfect. They completed the job in the time that they were supposed to. In fact, I went over there (it was done at my parent's condo) to see the guys at 4:45 and they had finished and left already. They did everything that I asked for, including painting the closets. The only thing I didn't like was that they didn't communicate with me well enough. We set up the day that they would be there for service via email, here on Angie's list, but when I asked them to confirm the date a few days before and then the night before, they never responded. I wasn't sure if they'd show up. The doorman called me at 9:30am to tell me that the painter was there to get an estimate of the work needed. I got on the phone with him and he asked me the details (which I'd given in my emails) and if the ceiling needed painting. I said no, and again told him it was just a bedroom with the closets, which he said was easy. The super then told me I'd need a permit or waiver from the building (co-ops), but he'd check on it and they'd get back to me. A few hours later, I hadn't heard from the super or the painters, so I called back and was told that a waiver wasn't necessary and that the guys were painting. Like I said, I was happy they were doing it, and on the day that we agreed on, but It would have been nice to have heard that directly from the painters, so I could have cleared my schedule completely in case something happened that I was needed.

Everything went well from the first time I was recommended to use Lloyd and Myron for home repairs, to the time they helped to make the decisions on color and stain choices, to the very end when they cleaned up and were out of the house. They are very knowledgeable In their work, and even gave me some good recommendations of some future repair ideas. I would definitely use theme again for my next home repair.

This company has lied to me many times. I hired them and gave them a key to the tenants place, they never returned it. I had to fly from California to New Jersey to check the work and I was there for a week. I still can't get a hold of them. Their address is fake. Every time I call them I can't get through because the voice mail is full. I have tried 3 different lines. They did some work, but did not finish. My tenants are now moving out, and I have to change all the locks and get new keys because they didn't return my key. They had hired a sub contractor with out me knowing it. They are a dangerous company and I advise to stay away from them. It was a very, very unpleasant situation. It was unbelievably disgusting.

Our unit was not ready until months after we were told that it would be and the work they did was mediocre at best and in some cases completely inadequate. They waited until the last minute to try to finish the work and then rushed to get everything done. After we moved in (we were the first), we witnessed them do the exact same thing for all of the other units in the building. We have had to refinish our hardwood floors because they did not use enough polyurethane and the floors were getting stained. We had to repaint everything because they used the cheapest paint possible and did a very poor job. We had to have our ceiling repaired because the air conditioning leaked due to improper piping. The smoke detectors go off if you run the bathtub which we are still trying to fix. The fence in the backyard began to fall over in less than a year. The paint on the back patio and fire escape was never finished and what was done was done poorly - they started with red paint then decided to use black but never covered the first coat of red completely. After we moved in they came back to fix something and in the process ruined our carpet by getting glue all over it. They left without telling us and we had to have the carpet replaced which they were supposed to pay for but still have not 8 months later. I could go on for days with the number of things they did incorrectly but the best I can say is not to use these guys or to even consider them. They do horrible work, are not professional, and will not answer your calls or return your messages. If you try their cell phones, they never answer and the voicemail is always full so you can't leave a message. If you do get in touch with them, they will tell you that your problem will be fixed but it never will. They have no problem lying to you. Also, they work with Service Magic so beware if you get them this way. The company consists of Lloyd Bowden and Myron Usher so if you get either individual I would be concerned as well.

They did the work but there was a problem with it a few weeks later--like the previous door it fell off the track and broke. I told them I didn't think the problem was any fault of their own but I asked them to come back and see if they could find a solution They came back, suggested some ideas, said they would be back the next day, and then I never heard back from them again. I've made several phone calls to their offices and they didn't even bother to return them. In other words, be careful if you hire them, you may get an unfinished job.
