Description of Work: We accepted the Ryback deal of 5 yards of mulch for $300. The upcharge for dying the mulch ($100) was somewhat higher than others, but their package included installation, and we wanted the whole deal. We waited several days after the order, but no call came from Ryback. I called them, accepted the deal, and made an appointment for about 3 weeks later. The office lady promised to call a few days before and give me a specific time. She also declined to charge the dye fee to my credit card, saying I would be invoiced. | |No call ever came during the week before the appointment, so on the morning of the date I called to find out what time. She said she had called and left messages, and also sent e-mails, but nothing was ever received from her. She would call back with a time shortly, but hours later I had not heard, so I called again, and was told "about 3 PM." I had sat around all morning for nothing. She said she would call when they were on their way, but no such call ever came. I had verified that she had the right number. | |The men arrived before 3 PM, never came to the house to see what was to be done, but started to prepare the areas they thought were appropriate. I went out and gave specific instructions once I saw them. Greg Ryback came after 3 PM with mulch in a truck, and dumped most of it in the driveway. He then approached me and told me that was my 5 yards. The pile looked rather small, and we agreed that it would likely not cover the intended area, which I had measured and calculated for 3 inch coverage. He said he had loaded 8 yards and would leave the remainder for $90 a yard more. I am a fair judge of size and volume. The pile did not look like 5 yards to me, but I felt intimidated and wanted the job done, so I agreed to pay for one additional yard. He dumped the rest, saying he had given me a gift of the whole 8 yards, and asked for payment immediately. No invoicing, in fact no paper at all. I went and wrote a check. | |His parting remark was that he expected an excellent rating from me on Angie's List. I preferred not to go through the entire sordid tale, but my wife insisted that others should know of our experience. I cannot account for all the glowing ratings Ryback receives, but I felt the office did not keep any promises and the amount delivered was exaggerated. I have since observed other mulch deliveries and worked with bagged mulch to fill in areas that were skipped, so I am convinced that we barely got 5 yards, if that, and I was pressured to pay for more. | |The men worked efficiently in distributing the mulch and cleaned up nicely. They get the stars. |
