Description of Work: Chimney repair-he gave us a quote. When we were ready to have the work done, we called and called and he kept saying he would come out to do the work. After waiting weeks, he said he couldn't do the work. He was very unprofessional. I think this man is retired. Not sure why he is advertising on Angie's list.

 + -1 moreI came home from vacation to discover a moldy odor. I went down to the basement mechanical area, only to discover that the water pressure booster pump was leaking. I called Bob. he came right out to check. At first, he thought it was only going to need a new seal. So he spent time trying to replace the seal. Unfortunately that didn't work, so he would up replacing the entire pump. This is actually a well pump. Although I have city water, the pump is needed to provide adequate water pressure for the upstairs as well as the sprinkler system.

 + 2 moreBob was excellent. Came out within one day from calling him and gave me a written estimate. He started the job by the end of the week and was finished in two days. Workers were on time, courteous,and efficient. Bob was there the whole time and found several other things that needed to be done. He did them ,didn't charge any extra and made sure I was satisfied. The whole just turned out extremely well and looks great. The fireplace chimney was over 38 years old and now looks brand new and is safe again.
Description of Work: Bob repaired several rows of loose bricks on our chimney,placed a new masonry cap, pointed,caulked and sealed the whole thing.

This was important to us as matching the brick of the porch and facade of the house with new brick would have been impossible. The stone porch is a great improvement over the old brick and mortar surface. The work was done in a timely and professional matter.

 + 0 moreI couldn't be happier with the results, the chimney went from being an eyesore and structurally deficient, to being a feature that looks greats and adds value to my property. My house has a very large chimney, about 30' high and very wide along the length; the contract price may appear high but was a bargain when you consider the condition and size of the chimney and the work they performed.
Description of Work: My fireplace chimney was one winter away from needing to be totally torn down and rebuilt. There were several long cracks along the surface and, in some areas, large areas of stucco had come off exposing the concrete block foundation. Bob came out the day after I called, explained what the project would entail and quoted the project. Bob was out with his crew within three days of my signing the contract. They wrapped the entire chimney with wire mesh, rebuilt the crown, covered the mesh with two coats of cement and two coats of stucco.

 + 2 moreI was very impressed with Mr Cowan's customer service- it is good old fashion customer service, the kind you don't see anymore. He went the extra mile to put a secure lock on my basement door so I would not be afraid to allow the crew access to my basement where my chimney is that needed desperately to be cleaned out. I had been broken into 6 years ago and when I explained this to Mr Cowan he was very understanding and put the lock on the basement door for me. He told me up front what was going to be included in the price and didn't add on any hidden fees. This is extremely important. He gave his professional opinion and my options about my heating situation I trust his opinion and his judgment. I will call Mr Cowan again in the future for work I needed done that is in the scope of his company and to ask him for a plumber referral for my heater situation. I think he would refer honest people like himself for the job,which is almost impossible to find in NJ now a days. His two crew member were very professional and polite and do a really nice and neat job. Thank you Mr Cowan- I really appreciate your customer service and the manner in which you honestly do business.
Description of Work: My original brick chimney on my 1877 Victorian home was deteriorated and unlined. Mr Cowan and his team rebuilt the brick chimney, cleaned the old chimney of a 50 gal trash can full of debris that had built up over years and years, installed a new chimney liner and cap, had a plummer examine my oil boiler which is not functional and needs replacing, cleaned my manufactured fireplace and secure its metal manufactured chimney so it would not be destroyed by the winds and weather and readjusted its cap which was tilted, cut back some branches to prevent squirrels from entering the house again and fixed the heaved bricks on my front walk that the home owner's insurance company complained about. I was very afraid to leave my house open as they had to get into the basement to clean out the debris but he made me feel as ease and installed a sturdy lock on my basement door. Which I was really impressed that he went the extra mile to do. Mt Cowan and his team were very professional, told me what he was going to do every step of the way, explained what they had to do to fix the chimney and informed me about my boiler and showed me the hole that was in my boiler from moisture, offered me solutions to the problem, told me about all the debris that was in my existing brick chimney. he was very informative an d good to work with. I would call on his company again

 + -1 moreVery pleasant and straightforward. Perfect cleanup. Punctual. Three hour job for three people. Pays his help a decent wage. I had gotten a considerably lower quote for the job but they seemed unwilling to provide me with a contract before taking half down so I passed on that. Perhaps there was a reason I couldn't get them out to do it. Bottom line. A very capable and knowledgeable guy willing to share information about jobs I was contemplating. Will use again.
Description of Work: installed 45 foor run of lifetime warranty stainless steel chimney liner for my conversion to gas.

He showed up to give us an estimate when he said he would, did the repairs when he said he would, and finished in the time frame he gave us. My husband is the super fussy type, and wanted Bob to know that he wanted the bricks in the chimney pointed, but did NOT want a lot of cement to get all over the bricks themselves. Bob did a beautiful, very professional job! And, his work was neat, and his work style was also neat, he cleaned up so there was nothing for my husband to do. His price was definitely in line with some other estimates we got. My husband could tell Bob's work would be good because when he came to do the estimate, he fully explained what he would do. We would highly recommend Cowan's South Jersey Masonry to any one.

 + -1 moreI called a chimney service prior to calling Bob The other chimney people charged me for a damper I did not need. and told me I would need my entire chimney rebuilt or I would have to brick it up and not use it. The only reason I bought the house was because of the fireplace so that was not going to be an option, and the other chimney service knew it. Bob used other techniques to restore the fireplace. Upon Bobs suggestion, I callled the other people back and was given my money back for a damper that they installed that I did not need. Bob is one the most honest businessmen I have come across. He literally saved me thousands and restored my chimney in a proper manner without ripping me off! Since the chimney business is not regulated, there are lots of people entering the business trying to make a fast buck. Bob has been in the business for years and will tell it "like it is." And, if extensive work does need to be done, he will give an honest price and an honest days work. People like that are hard to find and I only wish he was an expert in other areas as well. If so, I would put him in charge of the whole house repair! Thank you for saving my fireplace. If I had listened to the other guys, they would have been on their way to Hawaii and I would have been on my way to the poor house.

He gave a fair estimate and completed the work right away. He was punctual, very friendly and knowledgeable about his craft. On top of everything he gave a 5 year warranty on his workmanship. We would hire him again.

 + 1 moreWe had several problems with our fireplace. Water was leaking into the inside of the fireplace woodbox, bricks on outside of fireplace were in bad condition, and there was a terrible down draft coming inside the house making the fireplace almost impossible to use. Mr. Cowan replaced several bricks on the top of the fireplace with limestone slabs, sealed outside of fireplace and placed a damper at the top of the chimney to control the down drafts. The fireplace looks great now and we no longer have a down draft. This is the first winter that we have been able to enjoy the fireplace thanks to Mr. Cowans' work.

 + 1 moreDue to a spring windstorm, several bricks and chunks of capstone were knocked off our chimney to the ground. This caused damage to the flashing and cracked the stucco covering as well as compromising the chimney's stability. Mr. Cowan worked well with our homeowners' insurance adjuster explaining what needed to be done to safely stabilize and completely repair the chimney. Mr. Cowan was on the job with two experienced assistants the entire time. He thoroughly explained everything that he and his crew were doing each day on the job. Cleanup was efficiently done daily. Our Victorian home is over 120 years old, the roof is slate, and the chimney was original. We feel the work was well done at a reasonable cost.
Description of Work: MASONRY Review Date: 4/7/2013 Was Work Done?: YES Hire Again?: YES App. Cost: $4800 Home Build Year: 1892 Removed existing chimney bricks to 3 feet below roof line. Rebuilt chimney with new flashing, new bricks, and new flue pipes. Added caps, weather, and animal guards to chimney top. Cleaned up all debris.

All gave me the same price, but Bob was the only one who actually upgraded the chimney, as opposed to the patch job others proposed. He and his crew showed up on time and finished early, leaving no mess at all and a really nice looking chimney.

 + 0 moreLast winter my chimney cap blew off - again. I postponed getting it fixed but then a starling flew down my chimney this spring 2008. That was a mess until I could chase it out the door. So it was time to call for a new chimney cap. After initial contact, the owner of Cowan's SJ Masonry, Bob Cowan, gave me his cell phone number so I could call him with any questions. He asked me after the first inspection if I had been having any roof leaking problems. When I said yes, he told me that he saw that the flashing attached to my roof was loose and that he would repair it. This was a relief because I can now postpone getting my roof replaced for one more year. Since he was up there anyway, I asked what it would cost to have the exposed bricks repointed. He gave me a reasonable price that same day so I added that to my work order.
Description of Work: Replaced and anchored a new chimney cap so it wouldn't blow off again (after it had been supposedly repaired last year by another masonry company), pointed my exposed bricks, and repaired the flashing around the chimney.
